Oh my gosh, we finally have a legit Korean Fried Chicken place in El Paso... What's the difference you ask? Korean fried chicken tends to be more light and crispy with a thin, almost paper-like skin that is not heavily battered. Korean fried chicken is super crispy due to the addition of potato starch in its batter and double frying the chicken. This second fry also boils off the extra moisture in the chicken after the first fry. Korean fried chicken is known to stay extra crispy for an extended period of time, even with a glaze! At the 1st location of bb.q chicken, they hand trim the chicken which is never frozen and make everything except for the sauces in-house, including the pickled daikon. How do I know this? Well, as I was sitting there waiting for my husband to figure out what sauces he wanted so that I could bring it back home, I met the owner Sung. Since it was the first week of a soft opening, he was there to train the staff and make sure everything ran smoothly. I could tell the staff was really happy and eager because they checked on me often. Funny enough he was the one that created Wingstop, and I asked him why he brought a franchise instead of creating his own? He was honest in admitting that after tasting many different types of Korean fried chicken, this was his favorite and he couldn't replicate the recipe. Simply put, it was the best and he wanted it for El Paso. I've actually had bb.q chicken before in Korea as well as the states. It's a beloved franchise popular initially because of their Olive Oil chicken, which was reputed to be healthier, oh and BTS were the spokemen at one point. What I actually love about them is their sauces. So hubby couldn't decide and I asked him to give me one of each so that he can try. Currently there are 9 sauces and 1 limited run sauce. I'll list my favorites on top. Gangnam is hands down my favorite. It's basically like a black pepper steak sauce with a kick. Secret is 2nd, because it's more fiery than sweet. Honey Garlic is very garlicky and sweet. Mala is numbing with Sichuan tasting peppers. Maple Crunch is the limited run and it's sweet and buttery. Galbi tastes like it has real Korean pears in it. Spicy Galbi is a good mix of savory and sweet. Hot and Spicy is a bit too spicy for me but I betcha El Paso will go nuts for it. Soy Garlic is too salty for me. Gangjeong is too sweet and sticky for my taste. Cheesling is just weird and powdery. The chicken is so crispy and moist inside. It also was delicious and crispy even cooled down after an hour. My hubby and friends tore into it. The large sounds expensive, but it fed 4 adults, so definitely large portions. Quality shines through from the well trimmed chicken, to the brine, to the light and crispy batter. No wonder the name stands for "Best of the Best Quality". Caveat: it takes some time since everything is made to order fresh. Eating Korean fried chicken is normally a fun social outing with appetizers and soju flowing while you wait for the chicken to arrive. So bring your patience as it's definitely not fast food. For $15-$16, you can get around 9 wings (medium size), which is very reasonably priced. These wings had so much meat on them and was PACKED with soooo much flavor! The owner of the restaurant was so kind and clearly puts his 100% into the establishment. Service was absolutely amazing here; you can tell staff is very well trained! So my wife and I were watching a Korean cooking show last night and they kept hyping up Korean Fried Chicken and how it's juicier and tastier than American Fried Chicken: challenge accepted. I found this spot close to home and with high reviews so I highly suggested to my wife that we go here for late lunch today and off we went. It's in the little shopping center in the corner and when you step inside you get the music playing and the ambiance is fun and young. Our server comes by and is very polite and cordial and he's helpful as I ask what's Rose'Ddeok-Bokki and he explains its rice cakes and fish cakes with leeks and cabbage in a los hot sauce with cheese. We ventured and ordered it along with the Half/Half Fried chicken in Golden Original and Secret Sauce. The Appetizer came first and it was a pleasant surprise as it's something neither my wife nor I had ever tried or seen but it was good even though my wife said it was a little spicy for her. Then the main course showed up and the chicken wasn't large but it was enough for both of us. I was informed to keep my grubby hands off the wings as my wife calls dibs on them all the time. The Golden Original was very tasty and you could taste the subtle spices under the crunch. Very tasty and it came piping hot. Then the Secret Sauce chicken was next and it was covered in a garlicky sweet sauce that was finger-licking good. The sauce was sticky good. This bb.q chicken is honestly not as good as their other locations. I was super excited to hear that bb.q was opening up in El Paso and get a taste of home, but the first two times I got it the crust has been inconsistent and sparse. Many of the chickens have empty spots leaving it without the satisfying crunch you usually get from Korean Fried Chicken. Oh boy! Where to begin. I pass this establishment twice every day. Never stopped. Today after church I was just going to pass it once more when I said: not today. They open at 11:00 so I had a few minutes to wait before they opened. I was, of course, the first customer. I walked up to the bar where Ryan was waiting to take my order. I explained it was my first time and Ryan was patient, helpful, and not at all in a rush. We discussed my entrée. I wanted to try the seasonal Caribbean sauce for my bone-in wings. He brought out a bit of the sauce for me to try. I almost guzzled it, it was so flavorful. Some heat, but with a wonderful blend of spices. I wanted to try the kimchi and rice bowl but Ryan explained that the restaurant is slowly adding new items to the menu and that had not yet made it to the menu. I asked Ryan for a suggestion and he said, try the Ddeok-Bokki. I was also going to order some pickled radish but Ryan said a small container is included with the meal. My order arrived and I proceeded to my car. I live about 5 minutes away and the whole way home I kept looking for a place to pull over and sample the delicious smelling food. I should have just dined in! Photos! You want to see photos? I did not have time to take photos, I just wanted to eat. My takeaway included a knife and fork, chopsticks, napkins and a wet wipe.
