This little BBQ spot is hidden in a Texaco gas station. It wasn't too busy when I arrived at 11:45ish but got pretty busy shortly after noon. Brisket was tender (no knife needed) and had some impressive bark on it. However any bite that didn't include fat was a little dry. Turkey was moist and had some good flavor similar to a super thick cut of roasted turkey. I also had a side of corn maux choux that was delicious. Drove 40 miles to try this place, not disappointed! I love bbq and like to try new places. The brisket here is absolutely the best I ever tasted. A thick salty crust of peppery dry rub covering buttery fat over well marbled beef that is so tender you can cut it with a plastic fork. I'm really a ribs guy but the brisket looked special 10 feet away, so I got a combo. SCORE! I'll probably never look at brisket the same way again, all others being but a pale, dry, pathetic imitation of the sublimely charred gift from the gods I devoured today. Talking about hospitality and good service!! You find it all here, from the gas station all the way to the kitchen. The staff were on pointnow let's talk abt what you're really here for, the food! I ordered a 2 meat plate.. but I wanted to go for a 3 meat plate but was hesitant coz felt a bit full still from the morning. So I told the lady nvm I'll get the 2 meat plate. I didn't know the boss was right there and he asked if I wanted to try the sausage/jalapeño sausage. I felt bad but he told the lady add the jalapeño sausage in my 2 meat plate. Guess what? I killed the whole plate. Brisket was on point and just falls apart to the touch, top of it all was the ribsthis is definitely a hidden gem. This first time in this part of Texas and I'd stop by this place every given time I'd pass by. The place well kept clean and they decorated the place like with a true Texan vibe to it. Loved it! I was home on vacation and since I live out of state now, I am always looking for good BBQ when I come home. I saw the article in the Fort Worth Star Telegram and decided we should try it on the way from Fort Worth to Fossil Rim. I will not bore you with the info on how to get there and what the place looks like since Moto S. did such a good job. We got there at 9am, so I figured we would be stuck with just trying breakfast, but I was excited to find out that they had slabs of brisket and ribs ready to go. For breakfast they have your usual breakfast driving staples like bacon/egg/cheese sandwiches and tacos, but then they have some new stuff. My wife had the Brisket breakfast taco, that's right, a Brisket breakfast taco. It was awesome!! They also had pulled pork breakfast tacos, and chorizo, and ribs.... The tortillas are really good, but they are also really thin, so don't take them out of the foil, just unwrap and enjoy. Since they already had lunch stuff ready to go, I had the brisket and sausage plate. I am a sucker for burnt ends, so I asked for some and got a heaping pile...I like to eat burnt ends with my fingers to savor the flavor and these did not disappoint. For me the test of BBQ is whether or not you need to put sauce on it, this brisket does not need a drop, it is tremendous on its own. I did try the sauce just for good measure, and it was really tasty, I sopped it all up with my giant pieces of Texas toast. When I saw the sausage come out of the smoker, I immediately decided I had to have some. It just looked too good to pass, and it is. I would say it looks like a cross between chorizo and andouille sausage, but with a completely unique taste. Loved every bite. The potato salad is really good. It is a mustard potato salad, but not with the usual suspects inside. I am not sure of the recipe, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Even the pickle slices were great, so much so that I refused to share. My wife had been talking about getting banana pudding since we got home, so we grabbed some for desert. It is ridiculous how good this banana pudding is. It was only because she loves her family that she was willing to share, but we each only got one bite and then we were cut off so she could have the rest. It really is awesome. The food was so good that I knew I had to take some home to my dad. I knew there was no way they would still be open when we came back through in the afternoon, since they close once they run out of meat, so I ordered a pound of brisket and a pound of sausage to go. It was smoked so well that I wasn't worried about it sitting in the car while we went to Fossil Rim. Believe me it was still awesome when it got home. Before I finish, I have to say that the staff were super, just the nicest people you could meet. If you live anywhere near Hwy 377, it is worth the drive to pick up some of this amazing food. If you happen to be going to Motorsports Ranch which is next door, then you are an idiot if you don't pick some up. I promise you will love every bite. read more

54 year old, native Texan...travel the state for a living. You can imagine how many BBQ joints I've tried...probably a thousand! This place is NOT my favorite. That spot belongs to The Salt Lick, south of Austin. But BBQ on the Brazos is easily #2. I've had the pulled pork, the brisket, smoked chicken and turkey, and the sausage and ribs...never been disappointed. Yes, it's a hole-in-the-wall, gas station BBQ joint, so that's part of the fun! Most of the side dishes are average, at best, but who eats BBQ at a place because they've got really good coleslaw or potato salad? Just order a sandwich and a coke...you'll have all you need, and no reason to complain about the blandness of the pinto beans. I had passed by this place many times and never stopped, today a buddy told me we needed to give it a try. Well this was one of the best suggestions ever this was definitely one of the best if not he best servings of BBQ brisket I have ever had. I am not what some people call a BBQ purist and I typically eat even my brisket with sauce. This brisket did not need sauce although adding some add another level of flavor to this nearly perfect creation. I also had the sausage and some potato salad both were delicious. I will definitely never just pass by again, at least if they are open. Thought I should let y'all know about it. BEST BBQ!! And cornbread salad! BBQ brisket falls apart, perfectly seasoned, great crust and it's not super salty!!! Ribs fall off the bone and have great flavor! I had never heard of cornbread salad and man have I been missing out! It is soooooo good! The 3 star rating is determined by comparing this and all BBQ restaurants to the best (our opinion) in central and north Texas - Hard Eight Stephenville. As a native, but homesick Texan, I am required to eat BBQ every time I make it back to the great state. BBQ on the Brazos is worth the trip to the state and worth the drive out of the city. Like several local restaurants of note, BBQ on the Brazos is in the back of a gas station and a bit of a dive, but don't let the attached convenience store throw you off. The smell of mesquite is starts as soon as you pass through Cresson, and only gets stronger until you find BBQ on the Brazos. Only open to until 3, they serve up breakfast tacos in the morning and delicious BBQ the rest of the time. We tried the brisket, ribs and sausage, along with some mac n' cheese and cornbread salad, all of which were good, but really, the ribs are where it's at. Meaty, fatty, nicely smoked with a great dry rub, these ribs are Texas in tender, dead-animal form. Next time, I'll be trying to make it out here on a Saturday for smoked pheasant and brisket tamales, because there is nothing that's not better after a good trip through the smoker. read more

This is probably one of the better BBQ joints in the entire DFW Metroplex, it's not overly priced and it is real good food. Well first off the lady and I use that word loosely was very rude to us at the register. This was our first and only time to go here (EVER). I will not spend my hard earned money at any place that treats me with such disrespect. I don't care how good you think your BBQ is - It taste a lot worse after the rudeness factor. The brisket has way to much pepper on it, the meat should speak for itself not be hidden under so much spices that I can't enjoy the meat. ( Gave me indigestion and I burped pepper for hours) The sides to go are way over priced ($6.50 for a pint) and for those prices it wasn't even close to full, only about 2/3 if that!! The potato salad is potato cream salad, not a sign of a potato anywhere to be found. The coleslaw was from another planet ( The planet of yuk! or no taste! ) I don't know where all these 5 stars are coming from, but I wouldn't give them 2 stars. I don't know what the spice is in the coleslaw, but it taste like crap. Maybe cilantro - who puts cilantro in the coleslaw (gross) for $33 dollars I got 2 slices of brisket 3 ribs some pickles & onions and 2 pints of expensive sides that were not even close to full. The Ribs were the best part of the items I bought. I WILL NOT BE BACK!! This is not Texas BBQ it is something else, not sure what to call it! I've been here twice and have gotten the chicken and mozzarella with chipotle mayo on a jalapeño bun both times. It is FREAKING AWESOME! Only due to the niceness of those I've come with have I tasted the BBQ which is also awesome. With at least 5 bbqs to pick from in a 10 mile radius this is the best. I live in Granbury and have stopped here twice. I see many 5 stars here but I don't understand why. There is no atmosphere at all, just a couple of tables down and up the stairs. It's in the back of the Texaco gas station. It's a good place for truck drivers to grab a quick sandwich and go I guess. However I found what I got to be way over priced. No bbq sauce bar, no onions, no pickles, but more ice tea. If you want to take the Wife and kids, I suggest you go somewhere else. They're not open at night any way. read more

First of all let me say that I'm a self proclaimed barbecue connoisseur. I'm not paid by any magazine, news paper or group of restaurants. I'm independent. The only person who cares what I think about anything is me. However if you really want to know if a place has good barbecue or not before you go, email me, I'll try it and tell you the truth. I first read about this place in a small article in D Magazine which talked about how good the brisket was. Since I live in Plano, it was quite a drive, well over an hour. No problem, I just purchased a new car and needed to put it on the road. To my surprise, I was not disappointed. I tried every piece of meat in the place. It was by far the best brisket I've ever tasted in my life. It literally melted in my mouth. If you're not a huge fan of barbecue sauce, now worries here, you don't need it! The ribs and chicken were spectacular! I talked barbecue with the pit master, discussing some of the top ten joints in Dallas, as well as Franklin's in Austin. His words were " I'm not afraid of Arron Franklin." After eating this man's brisket, he has no reason to be! I can honestly say that this is the best barbecue I've ever eaten in my life. I decided to get a few pounds of everything and take back to my folks in Dallas. My dad who's pushing 76 yrs old, agreed with me. He's never tasted anything like it. Barbecue on the Brazos is the real deal Holyfield!!! If there any downside to the place, I would have to say it was the sides. They were all unspectacular. On the other hand, I didn't actually come for the sides. I can do that at home. There are very few places in America that can produce the quality of barbecue that this place can. This place is so out of my way yet I plan trips through Cresson just to eat here. They are in my top 5 for brisket sharing the rarified air with Franklin's, Mueller's, Black's and Pecan Lodge. And they are numbero uno in my book for sausage! I'm not a big sausage fan when I eat BBQ but my wife is and she ordered it here and it looked a lot like the sausage at Black's so I tried a bite. Brisket is too die for - great smoke ring, perfect seasoning and one of the few briskets with "good fat". The fat is perfectly rendered, buttery, and melts in your mouth. The ribs are slightly sweet and tender. Turkey is smokey , tender, and juicy. The sides are good - better than your average BBQ place. The cilantro cole slaw is different and tasty. The owners and pitmaster work the front counter. The service is extremely friendly and quick. My husband and I have been four or five times now and the quality is always consistent, unlike some other small BBQ places. We come early enough so that we can get what we like. We have been out trying local BBQ and Texas Monthly's Top 50 BbQ places. This should be one of the top 10 if not top 5. Even better than #2 rated Pecan Lodge plus less of wait!
