Terrible job waxing my legs. Not only were my legs covered in wax residue and the technician was very rough but in less than two days I had stubble all over. When I returned to the spa to complain I was told it was my responsibility (!) and if I did not like the service I did not need to come back. What a stupid and short-sighted way to do business. Great Spa! Very nice staff and very clean. They did a great job on my eyebrows. The only thing I didn't like is they face you towards the big windows with everyone walking by staring at you while you get a wax. I work downtown so the last thing I need is my co workers watching me get waxed. A little embarrassing! I wish they took you to a private room or turned you away from the windows so it's a little less noticeable. read more

I got a facial with extraction here yesterday. I was pleased that they had a last minute opening and had heard good things about them from other women online. I am a full time model so when my skin has irritations or breakouts I have to take care of it quickly. After a week of thick smoke in Portland I needed a deep cleaning as my skin was the worst it's ever been since I was a teenager (I usually have ZERO pimples). The cost of the facial was average, but the lady who provided the service, (Angela) I believe, was kind but uncomfortable to talk with and didn't explain anything she did during the entire 60 minutes. She gave no knowledge of the products she was using or the extraction tool which HURT SO BAD. I even tried asking questions but she didn't seem to know what she was doing. On top of that she waited until half way through my facial to recline my chair which was so upright it was hurting my neck. Now today my skin is even worse than before with new zits and so much redness. I've never had such an unrelaxing and counterproductive facial. read more

Be Smooth is a cute boutique in Portland. It is easy to get find and the ability to make reservations online is very handy. I have had 2 spray tans done there, one for practice and one for my wedding. Both times the staff was very professional and accommodating. The spray tans turned out great. I get my brows done here regularly and the staff is absolutely amazing. They are really good at talking with you throughout the entire appt so that you are 100% distracted from the pain. Also, one of my biggest pet peeves in salons is feeling like the employees are judging you for beauty routine (which isn't uncommon in the Pearl). I get none of that here and they are the reason I continue to return. read more

Even though I am not the most comfortable in salon settings this place put me right at home. I felt super comfortable and was helped right away. I had the pleasure of getting an amazing facial by Anna who was so sweet and gentle with my sensitive skin. I love this place. The staff are all very nice and friendly. The auto email appointment reminders help keep a busy gal like me in order. I did the Groupon IPL and am pretty pleased with the results! Just had my last session yesterday. They don't really push any products which is nice. The products they offer are wonderful but expect to pay the price for that. The services on the other hand are so reasonably priced! Good deal on bikini wax and facials. So good you could easily blow your entire paycheck here! Maybe looking good will take away some guilt...or maybe not. read more

I am a huge fan of small beauty boutiques and especially this one because the service is impeccably brilliant and the products are so wonderful and I'm really fond of the location of Be Smooth, (right next to Whole Foods and the street car line). Helene has a large selection of the most lovely and best smelling candles I have ever come across. It is really hard to choose which one is my favourite. I want every product in the store. Was in Portland for work and thought I'd go for a Brazilian. You know, just for fun. (Ugh.) I've had extremely painful experiences at several other places so I took three Advil in advance and hoped for the best. First, the woman who took my appointment (a subtle French accent and, I believe, the owner) was so accommodating when I asked if they could fit me in within and hour or two. She said Amanda was available. I relayed my past negative experience and she said that Amanda is good and actually does her waxes. Enough said. So... Amanda is worth her weight in gold. She wasn't quick (still was done within 30 minutes) but she was methodical and I'd take that any day! She works through lots of small areas rather than a few large areas. That tends to work best for my pain threshold. She made friendly talk and, even though I was only half listening because I was waiting to yelp in pain, I was actually able to hold a conversation because the hurt never came! If I lived in Portland I would be a regular. If you want a great Brazilian, please go and see Amanda! read more

This review is for the waxing services only. I have had a couple other services at Be Smooth, and have been generally pleased with the results. The bikini wax, however, was rather disappointing. I worked with Jessica. I will say, to be fair, that this was my first experience with hard wax. Perhaps my hair follicles just don't respond well to it? I don't know. But first of all, it took an hour - I've never had a full wax take more than 40 minutes. Second, and perhaps this is always the case with hard wax, Jessica seemed to keep wanting to pull the wax before it was ready, which would involve her peeling up one edge, which would very slowly yank the hairs in that area, she would decide it wasn't ready, and then would repeat this process several times before it was actually time to pull it off. Third, she waxed very large sections all at once - which means that she didn't account for the fact that different sections of hair grow in different directions. In fact, she actually commented "these hairs didn't pull out because they grow in a different direction". I feel like that's a fundamental aspect of waxing. Fourth, she waxed over the same spot twice and sometimes three times. When it came to the end of our appointment, she gave me a mirror, and I immediately noticed two sections where a good number of hairs hadn't been pulled out, and when I pointed them out to her she asked me if I wanted her to wax them again. I told her no, I really don't think waxing a fourth time is a good idea. Fifth, she didn't wax all the way in the back. Perhaps she assumed I didn't have hair there? (sorry for the TMI) And Finally, she didn't clean all the wax off of me. So between the raw skin from the multiple waxing, the random hairs that hadn't pulled out, the sections that weren't addressed at all, and the wax that I had to clean on my own, I definitely wasn't happy. I have never had any of these things happen before, and I don't honestly know if they can all be attributed to the fact that soft wax doesn't result in these issues? If so, then I don't know why anyone would use hard wax. And if not, then there was a lack of knowledge or experience. read more
