Another great and free feature to take in at Balboa Park. I use it as a meeting spot since it is so easy to find and there is parking very close by. Easy landmark to find and draws lots of crowds. Not as nice as the fountain in Chicago (I think that one is called the Buckingham fountain or something like that) but the Bea Evenson fountain is still a pretty cool fountain and the best one that I know of in the San Diego area. the fountain is large, always flowing, and it seems like something is always going on nearby between vendors selling things or people giving out literature or information for their cause or religions, etc. The fountain is a great spot for photography and always people taking pictures here so I was quite surprised to be approached by an idiot asking me what I was taking pictures of. Gee I don't know, how about the ground! Because why would I take pictures of the fountain when my camera is on a tripod in front of the fountain. That wouldn't make any sense now would it. I am not sure if he was drunk or on drugs but he didn't appreciate sarcasm he would not stop pestering me or hovering over my gear until I approached him and suggested that he leave. Large, beautiful fountain in Balboa Park. This is not for playing in, so please don't let your kids swim in this (something I have seen too often). The water is not clean. It is a beautiful place to sit and relax or take photos. Located directly in front of the science museum in Balboa Park! Next to the bridge that takes you to the rose and cactus garden. read more

The beautiful, circular fountain is located in the center of Balboa Park at the east end of El Prado. Surrounded by colorful flowers with crystal clear water where children could jump in to cool themselves. There are also seats at the foundation edge where anyone could enjoy watching the water spray that could shoot up as high as 25 feet. It is a popular photo spot for locals and tourists. Amid the beauty of this fountain is an even more beautiful story of the lady whose name the fountain was dedicated to. Bea is a prominent civic leader who dedicated her life in preserving the old structures and buildings in Balboa Park which include the Casa del Prado and Spreckels Organ Pavilion. This is a landmark every local knows. It serves as a meeting point for people and events. It's such a fixture in Balboa Park if you ever loose track of your group just meet at the fountain. It's easy to find and even for those who can't speak much English. They'd be able to point to where the fountain is. If you time your visit right sometimes you can capture postcard photos of it with a sunset or dramatic lighting and no one in your shot. Peak times there's people sitting around it, kids play in it which I wouldn't recommend. The morning I came their was a group of cowboys & cowgirls two stepping. Fun! Probably the second-most photographed location in Balboa Park (the first being the Botanical Building), the Bea Evenson Fountain is one of the highlights of any Balboa Park visit. I too wasn't aware that it had a name, but courtesy of Gail P., now I know! The fountain is very beautiful and eye-catching, and on any given day you'll see tourists taking photos of it and of themselves with it. And of course, you'll see plenty of kids splashing around, and their parents splashing around in an attempt to keep their kids out. Located on the north side of the Reuben H. Fleet Space Theater in Balboa Park is the Bea Evenson Fountain-named after and dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Bea Evenson . This lady was a tireless and beloved civic volunteer who was instrumental in preserving and protecting the Spanish Colonial architecture of Balboa Park. In May 1981, the Fountain debuted and quickly became the centerpiece of the north El Prado area. A lively display of waterworks inside a tiled, circular pool -the Evenson fountain was a splash of energy that attracted much fanfare and proved to be a very popular Balboa Park photo opportunity. Kids seemed to love and become transfixed by the ever-moving bursts of water. It became in time-a renowned Balboa Park gathering spot. Bea Evenson was a very powerful mover-and-shaker who was one who knew how to get things done! It was she who had rallied the city behind the plan to turn the last little bit of Bay side property into a proper City Park. She appeared countless times before the Board of Port Commissioners and in meetings with Port Staff, and was the driving force behind galvanizing the city to support this new recreational greenbelt. The end result was Spanish Landing--a park that today beautifies nearly 5,000 ft. of the north shore of San Diego Bay. In 1967 Bea was a founder and became the leader of a civic group named The Committee of 100, and sparked community interest and raised funds to help preserve the original Spanish colonial architecture of the 1915 Exposition buildings along the Prado in Balboa Park. Their first success was the restoration of the lavishly decorated Casa del Prado-a $3.5 million rebuilding project dedicated in 1971. Other building restorations were to follow. Bea Evenson was much beloved and acclaimed for her good works here in the City of San Diego. Today the Fountain that honors her has been shut off at times due to water conservation and drought. Many movies, television shows, and newscast segments have been filmed in front of the Fountain. Both my children adored visiting Balboa Park -most especially for the chance to run and splash along the Fountain's edges. I've had to fish both of them out of the water many times because running around the perimeter of it is so slippery yet fun! The famous jazz artist "Jack DeJonette" worked there with me back in 1972 (I believe) along with "Wally", the Engineering Manager who answered to "Mr. Beauhler" (spl?) the owner. We had a small engineering staff but did great things. Hydrel did the 1970 New York's World Fair water effects, which is quite a "feather in the cap". We all received our assignments from Wally. On one typical work day, Wally came over to my work area to show me a copy of a magazine. I believe it was "Better Homes and Gardens" and in it he showed me a photo of a large water fountain that I had designed. My name is Jose Bravo. It was quite an occasion to see my work in print but I didn't realize then what an event it would turn out to be. The fountain was constructed in Balboa Park of San Diego. I remember going over there from Los Angeles on summer vacations to visit the attractions, the zoo and, of course, my fountain. I would laughingly "shoo away" the children that were playing in it. And then in 1981, they dedicated the fountain to Bea Evenson, who was probably the most deserving person in the world to receive the honor. They placed a cast plaque with her name on it and so now my fountain has a name. I enjoy taking folks to the park and show them something that I did when I was a young man. Most are surprised to find out that they were standing with the designer of the fountain.
