First off, don't let the name fool you - formerly known as Venice Beach Auto Body, they're a lot easier to find under their old name. If you google their new name, you'll never find 'em. And they're physically hard to spot, they're almost literally a hole in the fence that runs along that stretch of Hampton Drive, but write down that address and Mapquest 'em because they are so totally worth it. I don't know if it was the earthquake or what, but for some reason, an hour after the shaking, I was driving out of the Westside Pavilion parking garage and a concrete pillar jumped out and hit the back of my car. I escaped the suddenly animate pillar and made it out onto Westwood Blvd. before I discovered that the concrete monster had left its clawmarks all the way across the back door, part of the wheel well and nicked the bumper. I knew my wife would never believe that I was hit by a moving pillar, so I went straight to a couple of body shops and told them that I'd be paying out of pocket, could they give me their best deal? First place told me $2300. Second place told me they could skip the bumper and it would be $1750. I bit the bullet and went home, showed my wife, who indeed, did not believe the part about the moving pillar. Luckily, a sympathetic neighbor drove up and told us about Beach Boys Racing (fka Venice Beach Autobody). My man Martin (accent over the "i") ran down all the things he'd have to do, including a new skin for the back door and I was thinking, "OK, forget it, I'll bondo and spraypaint the sucker and just go ghetto" until he said: "$600". $600?!! Deal. He said he couldn't take it until Monday, but it'd be ready by Thursday. I asked him if he could make it sooner, and he said he'd try. He called me Wednesday morning and it was ready. Bee-yoo-ti-ful. I would never, in a million years, have gone to this place without a recommendation from someone I trusted. But what a find! Martin is an artist and I think that's why they've changed their name - they were working on something way cherrier than my '95 Civic when I first drove up and I think they're going for the custom market. But they didn't mind going old school on my beater, and I'm a happier man for it. So, if your car's ever attacked by a moving concrete pillar - go to these guys first. read more

I was scammed by someone who claimed to do body repairs but did nothing. My bank asked for a note from a body shop listing the problems with my car. Otherwise it would be my word against the scammer. The owner said I should list the problems and he would sign it. I told him I would prefer to be honest, he refused. He was not helpful at all. All he wanted to do was argue with me. Martin ordered the new fender, bumper and lights, painted everything and then I only had to leave it for about 4 hours while he installed the new parts. Martin was referred to me after I got into a fender bender and my bumper began to fall off. I pulled into the shop and was told the design of my bumper (2009 Honda Civic) was weak, and even if I replaced the bumper, it was apt to fall off again. Martin then spent over half an hour finagling the bumper back into place and securing it back onto my car. After he was done, it looked better than it did before the accident, when the bumper was already slightly askew after years of parallel parking in LA. I then asked him what the charge was and he said "Eh, nothing" - after around 40 minutes of work. Even after insisted I pay him, he refused, saying that if I wanted to get it fully fixed (it would need a new grill, and the hood was slightly bent), to take it back to him later. This is the kind of place my grandparents would talk about existing in the 40s-50s, where they knew about customer satisfaction, and how important it was to the longevity of the business. I feel good knowing that a place like this exists. read more

I managed to chew up the rain gutters on my van by running my luggage rack into an overhead beam in a parking garage. After being quoted upwards of $800 and 2 days by body shops on Lincoln, I found these guys through Yelp. Looks like they do mostly racing/sports cars but they were slow during the winter months and agreed to take it on. Martin & co. had it done in half a day for $120, good as new. They even found matching paint and painted it for free after I told them not to bother. I'm definitely going back to these guys for my bodywork needs. read more

Beach Boys Racing has been around for years, as they were recommended from a friend who was in the auto industry 20+ years ago. I have been using them for the last 12 years. My first encounter with them was when I hit a 3 week old Camry, and the bumper needed to be replaced. They did this in short order and the price was the best in town. I work in the auto repair industry and have referred countless people to Beach Boys Racing and years later I have these people calling me back for Beach Boys phone number. After speaking to Martin (Manager) on one occasion I asked him why he didn't charge more for his work, and he said "I just want to keep busy and offer a great service". In my opinion, Beach Boys Racing is a hidden jewel in the world of body shops. They did an average job with a bumper ding I needed fixed but what irritated me is that it was supposed to take 3 days and they called me on the third day saying they were still waiting for paint (my car is black, how hard can that be to find)! Meaning I could have been driving it for those 3 days instead of having it stuck there not getting worked on. They also ONLY TAKE CASH which they failed to tell me until I went to pick up the car. The paint job was only so-so, I feel like it looks obviously repaired but I'll live with it. Might go back for something minor since they are decently priced at least. read more
