Last summer they offered 'Dining With Doggies' on their outside deck. It was a lovely, fun experience for my furry female (older) companion - she deserves the best ;-) The food was delicious (always is), service top notch. It's a little spendy if you have a drink, or two, or... One beef (no pun intended), which will still allow me to rate 5 stars - one year I wanted to come here for Mother's Day - and YOU WERE CLOSED! Wonderful view of the lake especially at night, but food is average.

Over 45 of us celebrated mother's 90th birthday at the Beach House last weekend and it couldn't have been better. Hats off to the helpful and efficient staff who went beyond the call to make this memorable event perfect. All enjoyed BH's special pretzel coated chicken and Mac n'Cheese among other buffet entrees, side dishes and appetizers which were topped off by a delicious birthday cake. Did I mention the staff was friendly? Well they are and it made all the difference to us "out of town-ers" planning this event! Thank you all at the Beach House.....well done! read more

I have been going to the Beach House for several years now, and have taken a small break since having my daughter. The renovations to the place were great but the food quality has gone way down. A flatbread pizza used to come on a delicious flatbread, not a cheap individual circular round plate. The calamari used to be the peefect blend, best in the area. It was milky and hard to chew. I saw the food runner more than my server, and i have never had bad service there. Now, it's just a bunch of amatures and kids who don't understand the first thing about service. They used to be the only restaurant to box up your meal in the back. It's such a small and classy move that appears lost. Whoever has taken over that place as manager is running that place into the ground. Just because you're on the lake doesn't mean you have to stop trying and cut a bunch of corners. read more

Looks nice, we arrived at 7:30 but with a reservation it's taken 30 minutes and we have been seated, but we haven't been asked what we'd like to drink yet even though they've stopped to tell us they'll be with us eventually. We get asked and it's been 10 minutes after we've ordered and no drinks. When drinks arrive two are carried in hands normally but then the third is carried in an armpit, a bit to close to not use a straw in the drink. But food arrives and is alright. Then after we ask for the bill it takes 10 more minutes but the rest of the evening is fine. read more

AMAZING location for drinks, lunch, or dinner. Lots of menu options and friendly staff. Our meals were inconsistent quality. Waitstaff is doing their best; often times acting in multiple roles - chef/food runner, bartender/server, etc. Two diners ordered same ribeye dinner - one was a great piece of meat, the other was considerably smaller and "chewed up" looking rather than a solid piece of meat. Another diner ordered a salad with goat cheese (which was excellent, but did not receive it until literally every other member within the party had completed their meal - this was after reminding the server twice that it was still missing. We understand that everyone is stretched, but they should have comped the salad. That was unacceptable. Drinks were delicious, pulled pork nacho app was generous and tasty. Loved the setting and summer vibe. Early dinner group. Make reservation for larger groups. Would return, but would expect better by then. Oh, yes. No one other than a few diners wearing masks. Took my father here for his 91st birthday. My Dad had the Mac & Cheese, and the 1/2 pound Aged Angus Burger. He had to take home most of the burger, but was very happy with the meal. My wife had a special that night, Barramundi, which was excellent. I had Salmon, and a cup of Gumbo. The Gumbo was superb, and the Salmon was excellent. Not as well cooked as I like, but I cook it myself every week, and am very picky. Doesn't take much to overcook Salmon. The Beach House is a very pleasant restaurant, and usually fills up quickly on a weekend. Recommend recommendations. For us, this is one of the best places in Decatur to eat. Highly recommended, especially if you like Gumbo. read more

Monday may have not been the best day to dine here. The staff was not what we would call unfriendly but just not friendly as we have experienced in the past. Dinner was Ok not what we expected,Scallops were fantastic but kind of pricey ,I added to my NY strip for additional $16.00 and got two ! (. I asked our waitress before ordered and stated " three or four" ) the steak was not a very good cut but was aged.so it was edible but not good, that was A bargain at 19.95 for the dinner compared to two scallops for $8.00 each! Mrs got the scallop dinner for $24.00 she got Four of them ! She also ordered a side of shrimp for $6.00 That was a bit more realistic .Just not a 40th anniversary experience we had hoped for. read more

We went for calamari feb 12 2019 they were out.none...only 6 other customers there...our meal took 30 mins to come out..my wife's fish entree was dropped in the kitchen..waitress said a few mins to redo..more like 20 more mins. Great outdoor seating with beautiful water view! However, they do not take reservations for outdoor seating so you may wait a bit. (That was not specified on on line reservation form.) The service was great but sadly the food was just okay. We were there for dinner. For a lake side restaurant I would have liked to see some fresh water fish offerings...trout, walleye, perch. Lots of salt water fish entrees. Calamari, huge, but tasty with a rather good sweet dipping sauce. The stuffed nachos pretty blah. The teriyaki steak dish was way too sweet and saucy; the rice dried out, veggies indistinguishable, and chunks of beef not medallions. The flatbread pizza, tiny and nothing special. I went there and ordered a regular burger and it was like the animal while alive had been burned and was terrified and was telling me of its horrific experience by way of me eating it. Only person who enjoyed their meal was a friend who order a miniature pizza. Me and that same friend has custom strawberry milkshake that were so good we order seconds but second time around it was just ice cream to thick to drink of course i couldn't honestly recommend it.. read more

We just returned from dinner at the Beach House. This is the first review I've ever posted. It's my 50th BDay and a friend gave us a $75 gift card for dinner there Upon arrival at 5:20, the hostess asked if we had reservations. We said no and we're seated outside (90 degrees today, with many open tables available inside that were reserved for later in the evening). We ordered a drink and appetizer. It took 30 minutes for the appetizer - calamari to arrive. It was very good. My husband ordered blackened salmon with an extra topping of lobster, asparagus & hollandaise sauce (additional $8). I ordered a filet prepared medium rare. Upon arrival, my husband received salmon with langonstinos / sauce. My steak was prepared over medium. When showing our waitress, she agreed the filet was much over cooked and put the steak on a little saucer leaving me with 2 side dishes. My husband finished his food. I completed my two sides. Still no steak. 25 minutes later my steak was delivered. Here's my delimma: maybe my expectations were too high, but this is a $100 meal! Soon, after my 2nd steak was delivered a young female manager stopped by and asked, "how is this steak"? I answered that it was better, but by this time I was full and very ready to leave. She asked, well how was everything else..... I then told her that my husband ordered a lobster topping (as outlined on the daily printed menu). She said she knew but I should have asked my server about it when ordering. (she seemed to place blamed me for not inquiring if the lobster was really lobster). When I clarified that I should have asked about the topping, she said you're right, I'll cover that cost. After this point, all the staff seemed to be done with us. No one asked if we wanted dessert. They seemed embarrassed and ready for us to leave. Our fine dining leftovers were squished in a small to go box. Our $78+ bill arrived. How much tip do you leave here? The service was slow, very slow! We were there 2.5 hours; most of the time waiting on service. There seemed to be plenty of wait staff but very unorganized. The food was mediocre at best. They were out of 3 or 4 different kinds of beer the waitress said they had, this was at 6pm on a Friday. Very disappointed!! read more

We haven't been to the Beach House in a couple of years (honestly, I forget about it...and I guess there's a reason for that). The last time we ate there, it was pretty good, pricey, but food wasn't bad. We decided to try it again for my husband's birthday since we were tired of going to our tried and true restaurants, like Texas Road House. I called in the morning to make reservations, just to make sure our evening was perfect. In the middle of the afternoon, I got a call from Beach House saying that the reservations that I had made, were evidently not good. After a very confusing and long explanation, we were told that even though we had made reservations, we may not be seated...but that they would find some place to put us and that we would be fed. We got there and were seated (we decided to go much later so we wouldn't have to wait). I ordered the filet, which I usually get at better restaurants and is always a good choice. When I got my steak, it was honestly the worst steak I've ever had, and we eat out often. It was very chewy and tasteless. I got the garlic potatoes and they were bland and cold. They had our order wrong - I got my husband's potatoes and he got mine, so we had to switch our food ourselves. The rest of my family's food was mediocre. Our bill arrived, and it was $120. I added it up in my head and it should've only been about $80. So unless they charged us for our water or added a hefty gratuity (it wasn't itemized), I think we were overcharged. I don't write reviews often, and when I do, they're either really good or bad. I am not a picky eater, but for $120, we should've had a phenomenal meal. We are not going back...at least until it's been long enough that we've forgotten about our experience again. Go to Texas Roadhouse...they are consistently good. read more

I spent some time in Decatur for the early part of July 2008. Not the type of place I would like to spend a whole lot of time. In my business I have to travel more than half the year. Being from L. A. I have to say that I feel comfortable mentioning this place the Beach House. Dining there on several occasions over three weeks. I found that this is the only beautiful gem of a restaurant in the city. Truly a one of a kind with an amazing wine list for a small midwestern town. I havent seen lafite rothschild on a wine list in a city ever under a million population. The services was outanding every time considering a midwest small town. The chef features on 5 different occasions were all very good. The hostesses were more showpieces than they were knowlegeable about the menu. The owner appeared to be working a sweat as he helped servers and bussers do their jobs serving food. The waiters each time had great attitudes and were well versed on the menu and wine list. I must admit I enjoy testing wait staff every where I dine. Overall Congratulations Beach House. You have helped make Decatur Illinois a fond memory for me. Food was generally pretty darn good, standard steakhouse-ish fare, but slightly inconsistent. We ate there two nights in a row, once with a party of eight and once just the three of us, and the fruit & cheese appetizer plate and ny strip were both deeply disappointing the second time around, both in quality and quantity. French onion soup, while quite good, comes variously in a bowl or a hollowed out giant onion, apparently on the chef's whim. Roast garlic and shaved parmesano with the bread a plus, and salads were spectacular. Calamari appetizer was excellent, really goddamn good, as were the crab cakes, porterhouse, short ribs, pork chops, (medium) burgers, seabass, salmon, potatoes of all sorts, side veggies. Mac & cheese needs more cheese in the sauce, not just on top, but ok overall. Drinks -- teas, juices, basic vodka martinis, tap weissen and bass -- well-served. The servers couldn't have been better, all four we had were cheery, bright, honest and informative, prompt, and attentive. Generous outdoor seating looks good, high number of smokers (pretty much par in central IL) seated and stepping out from the bar might make it less attractive to some. Now the dark side. The very young and vacuous pack of hostesses and whoever else determines seating are morons, being borderline discriminatory. Place definitely has a "family not-so-friendly" policy, having only one lousy table for parties of six to eight, right next to the reception area, which is actually a table for just six, so the folks stuck on the ends get their knees wedged between the table legs. Anyone with kids (5/5 parties we saw in two nights including us) gets stuck around the corner next to the kitchen. Despite reservations for a front window table we were fed a line about "oh all of those tables were reserved earlier, if you can finish in under an hour you can sit there" which we've experienced only in high-end "beautiful people" places in NY and SF. Meanwhile we saw the table remain empty through our leisurely two-hour early dinner. Little surprising, but I lived there as a kid, and saw plenty of class warfare, routine petty discrimination and humiliation, apparently this ignorance hasn't dissipated. read more
