Okay - for reference - I've spent my entire adult life between NYC and LA - two of the biggest cities in the US. For the first half of that time I worked in fine dining. Understand it's NYC, but paying twice the literal price for a bottle of bourbon that is more commonly found elsewhere is a joke.

They have a good wine selection in the refrigerated section. I didn't shop around the non-refrigerated section but they have a decent variety there. I went with a bottle of Elena Walch Pinot Grigio Alto Adige DOC circa 2023. On a side note: this wine is delicious and smooth. Try Crush, a few blocks down because they are 30% cheaper for the same exac product and you can go to their website and order on line and they give you free deliver! Als, I recommend Flat Iron Wine and Spirits and Acker Wines which also charge 30% less for the same product. Oak and Steel also has very aggressive, dishonest salespeople who are more interested in making a commission than taking care of their customer. read more

The staff is indeed not stuffy nor snobby with their attitude or the typical abrupt/abrassive personality which I did not felt rushed, ignored, or unattended as I receive service. Although I had a budget in mind as well as red wine I did not know what country of origin or type of grape the wine should be for this holiday dinner party, which the sales associate was very knowledgeable in probing me questions to recommend 2008 Heron Pinor Noir from Sonoma County, American Canyon, California. Despite of the staff being small yet knowledge, I rate it three stars as they were just average not friendly as it appears its just a job to them and anxious to shoo clients away as I was an inconvenience from disrupting their flow of work. read more

THEY DON'T LET YOU USE VIVINO. I'll always use Vivino to judge wine quality and average price of bottle before I purchase a wine - I'm a big user of crowdsourced reviews (hence Yelp elite) and I don't want to pay absurdly over the average price (knowing that on 57th St I will have to, which is fine). However, my boyfriend snapped 5 Vivino pictures (3 of which an employee told him to snap on the app) and another employee (Carlos) told him that he can't use the app. He was extremely rude and discriminatory. This place looks great from the outside, and pretty good from the inside. I mean, it has potential... there is definitely a small but interesting selection inside, some well-chosen off-the-beaten path wines, but the prices are a little higher than normal. Not outrageously so, I'd say - I've seen worse, for sure - but enough to keep me from doing all my shopping there. This is the place to go for something out of the ordinary, for a different angle on grapes you might already know. The vibe is a bit strange, as others have mentioned, but I can't quite put my finger on it. The proprietors were in fact helpful to me, and friendly, so I have nothing to complain about. So this is clearly a fancypants wine shoppe (spelled that way intentionally to accentuate the fancypants-ness of this place) where fancypants people come to purchase fancypants wine from fancypants places. Aside from carrying (for the most part) fancypants wines, Oak & Steel also employ fancypants people with fancypants ideas about wines. I asked nicely to see some moderately priced wines and apparently $40-50 means moderately priced... I stated that this wasn't for an event, important group gathering or anything "big" but to celebrate that it was Friday and to share with my boyfriend in the confines of his Astoria apartment...I wanted to surprise him with something nicer than the regular $8-10 Papi Tempranillo or Barefoot Pinot Noir that we normally go for...no offense to Barefoot Wines - they're one of my all-time favorite budget wines. I then asked the fancypants salesperson if he had anything closer to $20 price range and because I had to spell it out to him I said, "the more cost efficient, the better" - clearly I have a way with words :). He did point me out to a somewhat pleasantpants (not as fancypants, but nicer than casualpants) Italian Chianti (Colognole Chianti Rufina 2007) that only ran me about $16. PERFECT!! As Mr. Fancypants rung, me up I nicely asked if he could wrap it up for me and make it look pretty...the look on his face kind of screamed, "SERIOUSLY, YOU WANT ME TO WRAP UP THIS CHEAP WINE!??" and wrapped it up in a shiny silver wrapping with pale pink ribbon which he was awesome enough to even curl up with scissors and I flashed him a smile that shone brighter than diamond and purred a, "thank youuuuu, my boyfriend is gonna love it!". This resulted in a half smile. A smile is a smile though - so I WIN Mr. Fancypants. Oh, did I mention that employees from my company get a 10% discount if we flash our IDs and a business card (since our corporate IDs don't day the name of my company). YES, I got 10% off my wine and I'm sure this gave Mr. Fancypants no pleasure, but yet he was informative, pleasant and did as I asked. This is why I'm giving fancypants Oak & Steel 3 stars. With their decent selection (that isn't actually presented the way they should be for fancypants wines...I did learn something in fancypants Paris) - They're A-OK and I'll be back when I'm feeling kinda fancypants. read more

Oak and Steel has one great thing going for it: free delivery until (I believe...) 10pm. No minimum. Other than that, it's a hit or miss unnerving shopping experience. I used to work nearby and go around once a week for, oh, 2 YEARS and no one ever recognized or remembered me. I got carded every single time I entered the store. Prices are also hit or miss, meaning I tended to avoid the odd salespeople and stick to the reasonably priced bottles. One of the ladies is nice and unpretentious. The other guys are offputting and a bit patronizing. Why is it that wine brings out so much condescension? If you find yourself in the area, find somewhere else (Columbus Circle Wines etc.). The Good - The selection there for a smaller store is fantastic, not just in the standards that all whiskey enthusiasts should have (sorry not a wine person) but some excellent hard to find/rare bottles as well. If you want to see it in the flesh so to speak, look no further. The Bad - Wow on some of those bottles that are rarer and harder to find (some are limited release/limited distribution) the pricing is near secondary market pricing. l get it the Orphan Barrel series is a limited run but there are stores within blocks selling the latest releases (and some out of production) at MSRP not at bottle-spot.com pricing. I get it, its a smaller store which focuses on quality over quantity, but educated buyers will know to take a walk. Hence why only the 3 star review. The Great - If you must absolutely have it, a boss with a birthday that LOVES Harper 15, Your Dad's 65th and he is an Ardbeg fanatic. I guarantee that they have it and if you're willing to pay their price will walk out of the store with it. I also can not say enough about how helpful and patient the staff are there. Knowledgeable and about as friendly as I have seen in midtown. The Ugly - Not a fault of the store or its staff, but the building they're in always seems to be under construction and I have no idea what the facade of the store looks like due to the scaffolding there for what seems to be like years. This wine shop opened about 3 months ago. From the outside, it looks rather nice and pretty, almost like you don't really want to touch anything on the shelves. Just about every day they have a free wine tasting. The prices are on the moderate side. You won't find any cheap wines here, basically nothing under $10. Most wines are in the $18 to $50 range. Don't bother coming here for hard liquor either -- their selection is limited to a 1/4 of a wall worth of stuff, and its mostly premium or top shelf stuff. I did however pick up a good bottle of Prosecco here as an impromptu purchase, and that was $19. I think it could stand to be a bit more approachable -- when you walk in, it's that elitist feeling that comes thru. read more

I feel kind of bad giving this place an average review because it's because of a tasting they had here that we got into wine. But after we started getting into wine, we realized what everyone else is saying. The selection is tiny, the prices are very high, and the service is unfriendly. Just shopped here. Bought a bottle of Dolin dry vermouth for $19 and Schramsberg champagne for $42. Went a block up to Columbus Circle wine and liquor and found the champagne for $32.99 (not a sale price) and Dolin dry for $14.99. Called Oak & Steel to ask what they can do and the guy who answered said "I'm not the owner but there isn't anything we would do. We don't take anything back." Convenient location to the Columbus Circle area. I've shopped here several times and I'm always impressed they seem to have everything one would really need and nothing else cluttering up the space. It's a very efficient, cleanly organized and attractive establishment with top quality wines and spirits. Staff is always helpful and they know the differences between quality and price points -- and I found they were very helpful when I was deciding between different selections, without being pushy or trying to steer me toward the more expensive options. This is my first Yelp review, as I am rarely as disappointed as I was today. Living near Columbus Circle, there are several wine stores to choose from and I can guarantee that I will never do business with Oak and Steel ever again. This was my second time visiting Oak and Steel (typically I prefer Columbus Circle WInes as they have a larger selection) - but I felt like giving this store another shot. As soon as I walked through the door a grouchy older man angrily yelled from across the store, "ID PLEASE!" I hadn't even been in the store for more than 10 seconds, and while I do look my age (24), possibly a little younger, I couldn't believe someone who appeared to be a manager (possibly storeowner) could be so rude. After ensuring the man that I was old enough to be in the store, a friendly young lady asked me if I needed help and although I just wanted to turn around and leave, I quickly asked her to help me locate a simple bottle of Merlot. Looking back, I'm disappointed that I purchased a bottle of wine from them at all as it tasted awful and was incredibly overpriced. I will NEVER return to that store, not with so many friendlier staffed wine stores nearby. read more
