I have been going to the northwoods for 20+ years. Recently we rolled into watersmeet and the grocery store in town was closed. We were pretty hungry so we hit the Bear Trap. What the heck this is a supper club on steroids. My son and I were able to be seating at the bar. He had the kids cheeseburger, I had side of Brussels, the beef tip appetizer, and the blue cheese wedge. Wow that wedge salad was amazing- the bacon was perfect, blue cheese great and it had a French dressing sauce as well. I have never had a wedge served that way and it was great. My son's cheeseburger was amazing.They use the left over meat from trimmings. Our server (perhaps owner I should have asked) said they don't want to be a burger place. Well I hear you but that kids burger was amazing. The beef tips were fantastic- great Dijon mustard sauce. It was a great meal! Crowd was up north Chicago style- but man the food is stellar. We dined here with another couple on Fri May 8th. Made a reservation prior. We ordered the cheese curds and Crab cake appetizer. The cheese curds were fresh made. But the crab cakes hit it out of the park. The best I have ever had- yes- in the north woods the Crab Cake was the bomb. It was served on a wood plank with a red slightly spicy remoulade sauce. Two lovely thick cakes with lots of sweet crab meat. Made my entire week! I would just order these for dinner and add a salad on the next visit. Hubbie and I had the tenderloin infused with the garlic. So good. Cooked to perfection Medium. Our friend had the rib eye and ate every bite. His wife had the fish fry and enjoyed it but could not finish as she had stolen some of my crab cakes. Lovely atmosphere and not too big of a dining room. Such great service from a lovely group of all woman servers and bartender. I think this is our new favorite place to eat in the North Woods. Please do not do anything to that Crab Cake recipe. Outstanding restaurant nestled among the cabins. Unexpectedly good. Arrived without a reservation at 7:45 p.m. on a Saturday night. Packed. Waited 20 minutes or so for a seat to open up at the bar. Service was skilled and friendly. Martini made just right. Split pea soup possibly the best I've ever had. Bone-in rib eye steak not on the menu but was the special. Very good. read more

This was, genuinely, and without a doubt, the best meal I've had in years. I came on a whim to eat on a wednesday night, and was met with quick service, friendly faces, and good recommendations. They were clear about their limited menu and special offers without the need to push them upon you. I ended up ordering the half duck, with a grand marnier cranberry orange sauce, a side of balsamic glazed, flash fried brussel sprouts, and a cup of the beef mushroom soup. I sat at the bar, and listened to the quiet but comforting ambiance of the restaurant around me. The low conversation of other patrons, relaxing jazz flowing through the room, and the occasional clink of dishes. Notably, despite how quiet it was, and the cozy setup of the dining room, I could not hear the kitchen at all, a common indicator of a high quality establishment. My food came quickly, and presented beautifully. It was clear from the first plate that care went into every second of the preparation. Now, for those of you who order duck regularly, you know it is true that duck can often be quite trite; not unpleasant, but samey. Let me tell you, this was not that. The duck itself met a perfect balance between flaky, crispy skin and tender dark meat that absorbs the presented sauce perfectly. Although there is an extensive list of sides to choose from, something told me the brussel sprouts were the most apt choice; I was not disappointed. Both in texture and palate, the sprouts complimented the rest of the plate exquisitely. As a whole, the flavors in the dish were perfectly balanced, with no single element overpowering the others, and offered a delightful depth of flavor infrequently found in such a "standard" item. I also partook in one of their many desserts, choosing the marbled tres leches. The cake came in a bountiful portion, with both the sponge and cream layers at a perfect density, and a topping of whipped cream and british toffee. The toffee, as an addition, allowed the tres leches itself to absorb an almost savory note, which truly added to the depth in a way more unique than the traditional cinnamon or strawberries do. All said and done, if you are in the area, and looking for a date night, this is a fantastic choice, and within 80 miles, I'd even call this a destination restaurant. If you've never been, or it has been a few years, I urge you to pay a visit to this wonderful gem hidden in Land'o'Lakes. read more

Yet another amazing dinner! Tonight I was blessed to have the mussel curry special and my wife had the "Garlic Stuffed Tenderloin" (house specialty). We have eaten here at least a two dozen times. We love this cozy, traditional and delicious historic spot. (Food has been served here since 1937). Sit back and get an old fashion, relax as the servers and bar tender take care of you. Similar to other reviewers, the food is very good. Service is always vey good. We've dined here many times and always enjoyed the food and the cozy Northwoods vibe. However, the prices have gotten so high they now exceed major city prices. Example: butternut squash ravioli (includes soup or salad) is now about $40. Seriously. No meat involved. Other prices are similarly inflated. It's unfortunate the rationale that food costs have gone up and that drives menu prices is weak when such pricing makes it more desirable to dine elsewhere, where the same sourcing costs do not translate to excessive menu prices. read more

Always happy we came! Our 9th visit over the past 2 years, and our go-to when we have out of town guests and want a special evening, delicious food, and friendly service. I so very much want to give them 5 stars, but there is often failure in execution... tonight, brought no butter with rolls, had to ask for water refills repeatedly, and messed up our wine order. With regularity some dishes are swimming in butter (pan seared fish, or the ravioli entree). So there's the need to be vigilant if hosting a party to make sure things go smoothly. Newer to the Northwoods and have visited Bear Trap a handful of times. The food is consistently amazing, and the drinks and always stiff and cold. Service is great Steak, mussels, pork, salad, risotto and the desserts are all worth the trip. Owners super kind as well. Highly recommend. read more

Great Northwoods atmosphere and the service was stellar but was extremely disappointed in the food. Fish was very greasy, fries were over salted.. Prime rib soup was nothing but beef vegetable. Old Fashioned was not good either.. probably the one the worst I have ever had.. no orange+cherry+sugar+bitter muddle.. I will give them another try, next time a steak since that seems to be a house specialty. read more

Came here with my family. At first we passed right by this place looking for food but on a Sunday night there isn't too much open around here. So we were quite happy that we turned around and decided to eat here. It's a nice place, we didn't have reservations but they had a cancellation so we were able to get seated quickly. The service was great and our waitress was really helpful giving us some recommendations. The food was phenomenal! (We tried the gizzards, stuffed lobster tail, pan fried walleye, and ribs.) My final dining stop in Land O'Lakes (who knew it wasn't just a brand of butter?) was an overall good one at the Bear Trap Inn. The setup makes for a very comfy, homey feel with a foyer followed by an oval-shaped bar. The bartender serves as host as well. Bonus: He's dressed all in black and his voice sounds exactly the same as when people are on the news but they don't want you to know who they are so they disguise their voice and turn off all the lights when they do the interview. So they got that going for them. The clam chowder was very good; the clam didn't have any of that grit you can sometimes get in a mediocre chowdah. I had the salmon, which was fabulous. I did not care for the lemon dill "sauce," as it was far too strong and the salmon was tender and seasoned so well that it was unnecessary anyway. Entrees come with a choice of two plentiful and varied sides. I went with the aforementioned chowder and mashed sweet potatoes with caramel sauce. Ah-may-zing! The sauce is served hot, too, and the metal ramekin it's served in helps keep it warm while you patiently tuck into your salmon (nice touch). Sadly the service was not on the same level and therein lies the loss of a star. Sam started out well enough, but she first brought me the wrong soup but didn't realize it until she was setting it on the table. She then left to bring me the soup I ordered; several minutes later she admitted that she screwed up and the soup she originally told me about was yesterday's soup and not available. That lead me to believe that she was hoping I would take the wrong soup initially when she brought it to me. All of this was minor, and as I said before, the chowder was good. However it took an inordinate amount of time to get me the right soup and it almost seemed as though she figured I was upset about the soup and phoned in the rest of the night. Voice Scramble Bartender brought me my food because she was at the bar on her cell phone when the order came up and wrapping up the meal took 15 minutes longer than it should have. I could see taking your time if there's a group enjoying drinks and conversation, but I was there by myself and it shouldn't take 10 minutes to run a credit card. So if you have a little time, stop over to the Bear Trap Inn, the food was great! read more

Bear Trap has been a favorite for years. We had strip steak, roasted duck, scallops, and sauteed walleye. All delicious. I would have given 5 stars, but I did not see one employee wearing a face mask. The bar was mostly elbow to elbow. Tables were not real close, but not 6 feet apart. There is a state-wide mask mandate that they seem to ignore. Very disappointed they care so little about my health. Maybe next year we will go again. read more

Solid eating establishment up north. The garlic stuffed tenderloin was good as was the twice baked potato. For starters we like the cheese curds and if they offer the wedge salad again that was awesome. If you are there in the summer, call for reservations as it fills quickly! We have been coming here for the last 15 years..... could I really be the first to review this "sure thing"? Maybe I shouldn't let all of you know about this secret delight as there are only 8 tables in the dining room.... and maybe 15 seats at the bar. Shhh.... don't tell anyone :) Friday fish fry..... walleye... real honest to goodness fresh caught walleye. Served with potato pancakes and a supper club sized serving tray of tarter sauce, apple sauce & sour cream. If you can get past that- try the garlic stuffed tenderloin and add a cold water lobster tail. I am NOT a fan of lobster, but this makes me a convert. Elizabeth (the owners daughter) & Reggie serve up about a dozen different styles of "Old Fashioned" a North Woods staple. Try the cherry style made with Old Stag, or add some brandy to your whisky sweet. Of course a trip would not be complete without trying the "Shrimp Wreck" a bloody mary with enough shrimp & pickled garnish to be called an appetizer. Sweet tooth? Try the Bear Trapeze, a vodka lemonade that goes down way too smoothly... make sure you have a designated driver. If you are in the North Woods go here..... it is right off the snowmobile trail.
