This quaint little hotel / Condo owners place is good summer, winter , spring and Fall! I cannot stress enough how warm and welcoming the Gateway Lodge is ... superb! Also surrounded by fabulous restaurants good enough to sustain the "foodie " in everyone . If you choose not to leave the lodge to pursue food and drink, keep in mind bartender , Joe is the BEST bartender on the planet for these parts ! The Roast Duck was the best I've ever ate! I stayed in the Fall 2023. The suite I stayed in was warm and very comfortable. The Staff was very friendly and always willing to help. The fish cleaning house was clean, heated and provided a freezer for guests during there stay at the Lodge! I will return every time I'm in the area! read more

Food used to be very good but has really gone downhill. Ordered the prime rib sandwich because our waitress recommended it. Was terrible, tasted like it was old and had a lot of fat on it ( yes I realize prime rib is fatty but this was extremely fatty). Fries were over salted. Waitress was very friendly but bartender waited on two other groups of people that walked in after us and had the personality of a rock. Would definitely not recommend nor will we be eating here again. read more

The cleanest hotel you will ever stay in. Rooms and facilities are immaculate. Staff is friendly. You can feel the history when you walk in. Restaurant was closed when we stayed but bar was open. The bartender was Joe and he was phenomenal. Pool and hot tub area very clean as well. You can tell staff cares about the place. read more

Checked out this lodge just as a place to sleep for the night during our trip up to Lake Superior, and I was pleased with my experience. It was only $86 for the night, with free coffee in the morning and they would have provided breakfast prior to the pandemic. It's an old lodge that gives off a very vintage vibe, and very clean. No elevators, but we expected that for this type of establishment. When we got up to our room, we were surprised at how immaculately clean the room was. I guess sometimes when you stay in hotels for under $100 you expect it to be pretty bad. But we were impressed. Clean, modern bathrooms. Cabin style decor and furniture that gave it that cozy feel. No central air, but each room has an AC unit, and it worked VERY well. It was different than what we were used to staying in, but we loved it because it was part of the journey to the north woods. I would definitely stay here again if passing through. It's a great spot to lay your head to rest for the night or to stay for a few days even. read more

Let me start by saying that I rated the Gateway OK because of our negative experiences with the General Manager. I will elaborate later. Every other person that works at the lodge is friendly and goes out of their way to make you comfortable and happy. The Manager Lynn Forry and JoEllen at the front desk are "gems". The Gateway supurbly demonstrates the up-north experience, woods and no frills (but comfortable) accomodations. There is so much history at the Gateway and it offers a comfortable lobby area with a huge fireplace, restaurant and bar, as well as a swimming pool and hot tub. You can bring your camper to park in back and you can take part in skeet shooting. We found it a great jumping off point to travel into Michigan or down to Eagle River. Now, if you DON'T have any dealings with the General Manager, Sandy Garbarek, you should have a very nice time at the Gateway. We have stayed there long before she became General Manager and we have "bit our lip" for several years since she became General Manager. She has never said "Hello" or smiled at either of us. She has always been terse and curt any time we have attempted to speak with her or ask a question. She makes us feel that we are a bother to her and unwelcome. Unfortunately, her latest almost rude retorts, speaking over us, was the "straw that broke the camels back", we will not be returning after so many years. read more

I don't get it? As a returning customer year after year and it's clear they need our business, their business model operates in a state of conflict. Customer service evades them, it's not the guest fault that the place is out of date and is in a constant state of repair. Raise the prices, hire some decent staff with customer service skills and get new mattresses. Update the facility to meet the needs of the guests or be thankful the snowmobile people keep coming. read more

If you are going to hold a charity event there, obviously you contact the venue in advance. Our organization did just this, and got an email back from them confirming their offer to us with pricing. However, upon arrival to their restaurant with our event participants, all of which were active duty military personnel participating in the annual Soldiers on Sleds Annual Appreciation Ride, no one at the restaurant, or front desk knew anything about their offer to us. Even though our organization president, displayed to them an email from their very own email address, and after talking to their manager, and their general manager, They, in essence, called our organization a liar, and stated that the return email confirmation, never came from their organization. Therefore because of the lateness of the hour, we were forced to accept their condescending offer, which was much less than anticipated and promised. We would suggest that if you make any kind of commitment with this organization you get it in writing, get a name and a signature, or better yet, simply go somewhere else! That was our naive mistake. which we committed to, by trusting them to honor their offer. We were treated with contempt by the cashier, hostess and other staff. It was as if they HAD to serve us, but really did not want to. We arrived at 5:50PM and were not served until 6:55. Totally unacceptable, The room was not crowded and had at a minimum, six empty tables. As far as their fish fry goes, it was mediocre to say the least. For a table of ten, they brought out three baskets of crackers, and one small bowl of salmon dip. Their fish fry is overpriced for three pieces of fish the size of fish sticks, and is no all you can eat. They plop down a plate on each end of the table filled with six paper cups of tartar sauce. When you plate finally arrives, there is a paper cup of Cole slaw, and another one with baked beans in it. The beans were very spicy hot. Too hot to enjoy. To make matters worse, they placed three carafes of ice water on the table but never came back to refill them when empty. They also place on the plate two pieces of marble rye bread, but never provided any butter. The meal is NOT worth the 14.99 price they were asking and we will never go back there again. And to top off it all, we were never offered any kind of apology for any misunderstandings. So sad to treat our brave military personnel this way. But the point of this review is that they denied they ever sent us an offer in the first place. read more
