I came here on a Monday to preorder and pick up 3 dozen cream puffs on a Saturday. I preordered with one of the cashiers first thing when it opened. They had everything ready for me when I came in. The place smells so fresh. They got 5 different flavors. The promotion when I was there in July was buy 5 get 1 free. The fillings were Vanilla, Chocolate, green tea, and vanilla Ice cream add an additional $1.50. I didn't realize how big the cream puffs were. They're five bucks a piece. They also got an outside dip they can put in top of the OG cream puffs. They also got fondants for sale. It's a small place located in downtown Pasadena. read more

I've had my fair share of Beard Papa's growing up in Asia, but this location did not live up to the nostalgia. I was really excited to introduce it to my wife but the experience overall was less than satisfactory. First impressions when walking in, the space was quite cramped and it was hard to maneuver around customers waiting for the order, and those that had just ordered. It didn't help that the doorway was indented into the shop and it opened inwards. The worker didn't seem interested to answer our question of if the only available cream puffs were the ones shown here. They also had earphones in and we had to repeat our orders. I don't expect smiles and hospitality, but it just felt unfriendly? It could just be because it was the end of the shift, but it was definitely noticeable. The desserts themselves were alright, they felt a little stale and they broke apart instead of having a satisfactory tear when biting into it. The flavours did hit the spot and tasted just how I remembered it. We got the green tea and chocolate cream puffs with vanilla filling for both. I'll probably be back, albeit at an earlier time to hopefully get a fresher batch and better service. read more

I've heard about this place for a long time and had always wanted to try it, so I was excited to finally stop by. Unfortunately, the experience started off a bit awkward. When I walked in, I wasn't greeted at all. The lady at the counter didn't say hello or acknowledge me, which made me unsure of how the ordering process worked. I eventually realized you choose the outer shell first and then the filling. When I told her which shell I wanted and asked what fillings were available, she pointed to the paper menu and didn't really explain anything, which felt off putting. Throughout the interaction, she wasn't very friendly, no smile, no warmth, no welcome. It may have been toward the end of the day and she might have been tired, but it definitely affected the experience. When I got home and tried the cream puffs, I ordered the matcha, cookies and cream, classic vanilla, and the Dubai pistachio chocolate with chocolate filling. The matcha and vanilla were very creamy and tasty. The Dubai pistachio chocolate looked great, but it was a bit underwhelming flavor wise. Overall, the cream puffs were good, but they didn't completely blow me away. Overall, the dessert itself was decent, but the lack of friendly service left a lasting impression. Oh man, I really did not want to give this place a one star review but it did not even start off well. First, parking - there are parking structures all around pasadena! Parking is like a dollar for two hours but it's not as bad as LA. Walking into the establishment, there's this weird smell. It just doesn't smell like a bakery. Not a good start. The service was also very unwelcoming. The guy just kind of stared at us. No welcome greeting or anything. While we ordered, they were out of a couple things. It was about an hour and a half before closing so I understand why. Our order was prepared pretty quickly and while we were leaving, this old couple walked in. They were super nice and greeted the worker only for him to greet them with, "what do you guys want." Not sure if he was having a bad day. But to greet the nice old couple so coldly made me sad! The puffs were not any better. It did not taste fresh at all. It was kind of stale. My friends and I ended up getting six because it was buy five get one free. And we were not impressed at all. I understand it may have been end of the day and they were not making anymore but if they want customers to come back they should at least make something that customers would want to come back and support again. I used to go to the location in Arcadia all the time but this location is really not worth coming too with all the other great food and bakery in the area. read more

I went in this afternoon about 1 pm and there was only one person and it was too busy. Went in and bought 8 puffs and told him the flavors of each filling. Trusted he put the right flavor because he wasn't busy and he read the order back to me. I even came back in to order another 6 to give to family. Every one I have shared has had the wrong flavor. Let's get right to the point. These bad boys are DELICIOUS! They are delightful, and provide all kinds is satisfying texture experiences. The outside is crispy and light. The filling was cool and thick but not dense. They fill the cream puffs right in the spot. So that keeps the integrity of the doughs texture without getting soggy. There are many flavors and I can't wait to go back and try more. We had the ube which was flavorful and buttery. We also had the churro which had a lighter flavor from the cream inside, but the top had just enough cinnamon and sugar to be sweet but not over the top. We went there after a trip to Cheesecake Factory which is across the street. We parked at the parking structure which was around the corner. There is some street parking though. I've had Beard Papa's on my local list for ages and finally made my way in for National Cream Puff Day (1/2/24) - the perfect day to visit haha! We tried 5 different flavors and loved them all but the honey butter shell with vanilla filling was our fave! Staff are lovely, they have lots of flavor combinations, prices are reasonable, and these lovely little desserts would be perfect for parties. They have lots of premade cream puffs in various shell flavors available in their cases, all with vanilla filling - but they also offer many different flavors of outer shells that you can combine with any of several choices of filling which ends up giving you tons of different flavor combinations to choose from if that's your thing. I just picked from their premade choices and we were not disappointed. We tried a churro, s'mores, green tea, honey butter, and strawberry and loved them all! But the honey butter was by far our fave. Most of their puffs are full size but they offer several mini flavors too. The outer shells are light and crisp with a slightly sweet flavor. It perfectly compliments the luscious vanilla cream - such a lovely texture and flavor! Next time we visit I'll definitely be trying some other flavor combos with the different cream fillings. They also offer a few other dessert choices besides cream puffs - such as cheesecake and creme brûlée. There aren't any tables inside - this is a grab-and-go kinda place. Prices are definitely reasonable imo, especially considering the area. They're located in the core of busy Pasadena. There are lots of parking garages nearby and the one right next to it on Fair Oaks was free for the short 15 mins I spent there. read more

Yummy dessert spot! Came here for some dessert after having dinner nearby and was happy with my purchase. I stopped by around 9pm and ordered a Oreo crumble and another shell though I can't remember what it was since I just gave it to my friend lol. Service was good, both the employees were kind and I had my stuff quickly. The shop is smaller and was pretty empty when I was here, but I've seen it get busy during earlier hours. Cute little spot. The Oreo shell that I had was really good. They are very generous with the cream filling which is really sweet. If you enjoy sweets a lot this spot will be a home run for you for sure. Beard Papa's was good, but just didn't quite meet my expectations. Because I'm a chocoholic, the traditional eclair was my favorite - chocolate shell with vanilla filling. However, the vanilla filling completely lacked flavor in my opinion. I tried the chocolate filling in the Oreo shell, and I thought that filling was tastier. I barely tasted any strawberry from the strawberry shell. All in all though, I found eating these to be a complete mess. The shells were just too hard and caused the custard filling to get everywhere when you bite into them. Pro tip: I found that eating them upside down helped a bit! I also think the mini eclairs might be a more enjoyable eating experience for this same reason. I'd probably try those next time, if I return! read more

They were overall delicious however I probably got the last batch of the night because the dough started to taste on the old side. Overall still creamy and delicious. I've never been a big profiterole (cream puff) fan, so I've had no desire to visit a Beard Papa's. I know they have a large fan base, and their merchandise is also quite popular. There is a cute story behind the company logo. Beard Papa's started as a small bakery in Osaka, Japan in 1999. The owner, Yuji Hirota, had a fluffy white beard so locals started calling him Beard Papa. Yuji dedicated his efforts into creating the perfect profiterole and produced a double layered hybrid that consists of the standard choux on the inside and combines it with a pie crust on the outside. The result is a sturdier cream puff shell. The filling, which is a mixture of whipped and custard cream, is also non-traditional. Yuji's cream puffs (aka eclairs) were a huge hit and now there are over 435 Beard Papa's locations worldwide. I have not been to a Beard Papa's shop but had the opportunity to try a tasty puff at an event. The stores offer a variety of flavors. You can purchase premade ones from the case of create your own by choosing a shell (10 options available such as Strawberry, Churro, Honey & Butter) and then pick a filling - vanilla, green tea, chocolate, + a flavor of the month. I didn't get to select a particular flavor at the party but tried an original filled with vanilla custard. The puff was crisp & light. The filling was thick, creamy, and slightly sweet. Warning, these can be a bit messy. The filling gushed out when I took a bite. Thankfully, I didn't get any on my outfit. I suggest holding it with a napkin to be safe. It was good but I'm still not a cream puff fan. However, if I happen to be near a shop I may stop in and try a custom favor. I totally forgot about this location. Parking can be hard if you don't park in the garages/lots. They also don't validate. I got a little confused ordering as I didn't realize we could choose both the outside and inside flavor. However, the staff were super sweet and patient! It was around $24(after tax) for six. It's a little pricey...but Beard Papa's cream puffs always hit the spot. Each puff was pretty big too. I haven't found much places that can make a cream puff well in San Gabriel Valley. Churro! Finally, most beard papas don't have this elusive flavor. The vanilla custard my favorite filling. It's thick, creamy and has that sweet light eggy taste. The puff itself is crisp and buttery. Some locations offer a free tote but the girl at the register wanted to charge me for a bag....no thanks! I actually have a collection of beard papas bags I use everyday to carry my water bottles or groceries. The puffs are pricy, but they are always fresh and flavorful. It's worth it to get 6 puffs to go plus a chocolate lava cake with ice cream. It's a really beautiful store too, the yellow decor is inviting and warm. Love this place.... read more

She told us that they have this offer; buy 5 cream puff & get the sixth free. Also, she gave us a stamp card. They have many flavors and many fillings to choose from. I've passed by this little place in Old Town Pasadena and thought it was cute. It is on Fair Oaks near a parking structure and cannot miss the yellow interior/ exterior of the restaurant. It is a casual pick up and go type of place with very minimal seating to wait for your order. However, there is outside seating a few feet away from them. I cannot speak about their service as I only grabbed 4 cream puffs from UberEats. We order 1 matcha cream puff 1 chocolate eclair 2 original cream puffs with chocolate filling They were heavenly! It has more cream then filling so this is your warning that it can be messy. The cream had great flavoring to it and the coating on the outside for the eclair was just enough but not overly powering to the beautiful crunch you get of the outter shell. Will definitely stop again soon to build my own cream puff, maybe even try the s'mores puff. read more

So excited that there's a Beard Papa back in Pasadena! Although, now it will require more cardio on my part. I'm only giving 4 stars because they don't serve strawberry filling as a standard. Its truly the BEST~ my favorite way to experience them are with the chocolate on top of the cream puff. Not all cream puffs are created equally. These are fresh, crispy and delicately strong enough to contain the creamy contents, but firm enough to not be mushy. We ordered one vanilla and one Vietnamese coffee cream filling. The special is buy 5 you get the 6th one free (way too dangerous). We shared the first vanilla which was all I remember from the last Beard Papa experience I had even years pre pandemic... very good. The coffee one elicited a passionate exclamation of OMG... it was so rich. glad we shared. The coffee one would be great in the mini puffs... a whole one would have surely propelled me into a blissful food coma. I wish there was a way to get alerts when the Strawberry is being offered. A bit pricey for what you're getting. At $3.80 a shell (and $4 for the green tea eclair) I expected more. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad. It's pretty good but can get very messy and hard to share. My favorite was the green tea eclairs with the green tea filling (yes I like green tea lol). The churro and s'mores with vanilla filling were pretty good too. I may or may not come back. I won't go out of my way for it, but might be a fun activity if I'm in the area with my toddler and he wants to try something new. I feel I could guilt myself into better treats for the same amount of calories :) read more
