First time trying a Japanese parfait and was pleasantly surprised. I didn't think the price point was too bad, but again, I'm not the best person to talk to about what's a reasonable amount of money to spend on a sweet treat and this certainly seemed like an essential purchase after a long day in the field (walking around in LA). We ordered a Hojicha kinako mochi parfait and black sesame milkshake to share. Both were ordered through the touch screen kiosk at the front. You also select your own buzzer, manually input the number, find seating, and pick up your order when the buzzer informs you it's ready. Pretty seamless and efficient system. I would come back to try their other parfait options, but don't think the milkshake was doing much for me. I didn't like that they put a bunch of full ice cubes in it instead of blending them into the beverage directly, and the red bean also added more grittiness than necessary to an already gritty beverage. The red bean in the parfait, however, was a very welcomed addition and arguably one of my favorite ingredients next to the hojicha. We walked by this spot multiple times throughout the day on our way to different destinations and it seems to have steady, but not insane foot traffic, so don't worry about having to wait in a long queue. Stopped by Nana's for a little sweet treat! I got the cold matcha latte and added 3 pumps of simple syrup for my preferred sweetness. Nana's has officially landed in LA! I've tried Nana's in Washington and Hawaii, so I'm definitely already an established fan. On this particular visit, we got a Matcha Warabimochi Parfait and a Hojicha Warabimochi Parfait. I came to Nana's Green Tea in Pasadena after the hype had calm down. This is Nana's Green Tea's first company-owned cafe in the US. You order via a kiosk. We got the curry katsu-don (breaded pork chop rice with curry sauce ) and the sukiyai don (sweet and savory beef bowl). I wish the rice dish was hotter temperature wise. It was a bit cold. I prefer my rice dishes hot. I got the regular iced matcha with oatmilk and it tasted fine. To be honest, it wasn't better than any other matcha I have had at a reputable coffee/tea shop. The food was ok too. I also got the green tea ice cream with rice balls and red bean in a waffle cone. The rice balls weren't very soft. This was also kind of underwhelming. The cafe is cute and the concept is also endearing. The food, drinks and desserts all landed a bit flat. Don't expect exceptional green tea or really yummy Japanese food. Go in expecting average food and drinks, then you won't be disappointed! The ambiance is ok too; not modern or inspiring or Japandi (which I was hoping). It is simple and causal. Some of the tables were kind of dirty because it is a self-service concept. You have to put away your own dirty dishes and trays as well at the end. We came on a Sunday during lunch time - it was quite busy with people waiting for their order and lining up to order. You can order through a kiosk or with the cashier. We waited about 15-20 minutes in line. The cashier handed us a pager and we went to look for a table to sit at. We were lucky to find a table for 2, they encourage you to stay no more than 60 minutes but I don't think a lot of people took that into consideration as I saw many families / bigger parties staking out for spots. We ordered a pork katsu curry, karaage, brown sugar matcha latte, and the chocolate crunch matcha frappe. I love how fresh the food was! Our pork katsu had a light crunchy fry to it and the curry flavoring was on point. The rice was also well made which brought the dish together. I absolutely love the karaage here, it wasn't overly greasy and the batter was nice and light! I do wish there was some kewpie mayo on the side to dip it with but the lemon provided acidity to cut the rich flavors of the thigh. I tend to enjoy a stronger matcha and Nana's gives just that! My partner enjoys a sweeter / lighter matcha so he wasn't a huge fan of his brown sugar matcha. I'm so curious to know if they sell the chocolate crunch they put on the matcha because it provides such a great texture piece to the frappe. Parking: If you're lucky, street parking, but if not - We parked at the parking structure south of Raymond between Colorado & Green - first 2 hours is $1.00! It's about a 5 min walk to Nana's. Finally made it here, and Im so glad I did. The restaurant is spacious with plenty of seating. You can order at one of the self-service kiosks or directly with a staff member. Since a family was using the kiosk when we arrived, one of the employees happily took our order. She was friendly, patient, and answered all of our questions without making us feel rushed. I ordered the chicken katsu curry, and it was a solid choice. The chicken was perfectly crispy on the outside while staying juicy inside, and it came with a comforting bowl of miso soup. They are incredibly generous with the rice--seriously, it's a huge portion! My only minor critique is that I would have loved a little more curry to match the amount of rice. We also ordered a side of potato salad, which ended up being one of my favorite bites. It was creamy, flavorful, and the portion was large enough to share. To drink, I had the matcha cream latte. It comes unsweetened, but there's a convenient self-service station stocked with simple syrup, utensils, napkins, and to-go containers so you can customize it however you like. One thing to note is that it's a self-bus restaurant, so after your meal you'll return your tray and dispose of your trash. I had every intention of ordering one of their gorgeous matcha parfaits, but after finishing my meal, I simply didn't have the room. We shared two of the parfaits: -Matcha Mochi Parfait: Our favorite of the two parfaits we shared. I admire that you can actually taste the matcha flavor here and it's not diluted. Great desserts for sharing and the pricing is pretty decent. We went later at night, so we didn't need to wait in line and our order came out relatively quickly. There's plenty of seating but I can see how it'll get pack. It's really chill inside and casual. It's a good place for a meetup with friends or doing some work. I got the Katsu Curry and found that the breading was very thick and almost painfully crunchy, although the flavor was good. The curry itself was nice and warming, with plenty of chunky vegetables. Overall, I wouldn't call it a great curry, but it is by far the best Katsu Curry I've ever had from a tea or ice cream shop! The main reason for the low rating is the seating. But NGT does have a good serving portion of the matcha parfait than Kansha Creamery. Nonetheless, I did enjoy it. HOJICHA FLOAT WITH MOCHI (With a scoop of hojicha ice cream and mochi) This was very disappointing. Not sweetened, so you have to add simple syrup that is provided at one of the stations. Regretted ordering this. It was not worth the price! The hojicha flavor wasn't bad, but as an ice cream, it was not creamy nor sweet like an ice cream should. It was more of an icy ice cream. It is a self-service restaurant, where you pick up your own food and clean up afterwards. It's a good place to hang out. It wasn't noisy either. No loud music. PARKING Street parking is available if you want to drive around looking for the perfect spot. Good street parking is not easy to find in Pasadena and it's best to park in a parking garage. I parked at School House Garage at 33 E Green St, Pasadena, CA 91105. Rate is $1.00 for the first 2 hours. $2.00 for each additional hour. $12 for daily parking. It is a close walk to NGT. The chicken curry tonkatsu was fine, but it tasted like something you could get at plenty of other casual Japanese curry places. The portion also felt a little underwhelming for the price. It came with a lot of rice, but not enough of the actual curry or katsu to make it feel like a strong value. I also tried the popular parfait, and that was probably the biggest disappointment. It looked nice, but all of the ingredients felt separate rather than working together. The mochi, cream, regular ice cream, and matcha ice cream each tasted fine on their own, but it did not feel like one complete dessert. Went to Nana's Green Tea with my cousin yesterday after seeing a video on IG, and I'm glad we finally tried it. I ordered the hot matcha brown sugar latte, and she got the hot black sesame latte. We also grabbed the matcha chocolate cake -- we meant to get the matcha burnt basque cheesecake but ended up with the wrong one.The cake was still pretty good. It's on the drier side and not sweet at all, but it actually pairs perfectly with the chocolate flavor. My latte wasn't sweet either, which I liked. My cousin's black sesame latte was very sweet, so she had to add water to dilute it. The service setup is simple and fully self‑serve. You order on a tablet, wait for your pager to vibrate, pick up your drinks yourself, and clean up your table when you're done. Overall, we both enjoyed the experience. I've been wanting to come here for weeks now since their soft opening. I finally stopped by on a Saturday around 1pm and there was surprisingly no line. I ordered the hojicha soft serve with warabimochi and mochi balls. The ice cream was satisfying and smooth, but I felt like it lacked that rich hojicha taste I was craving. For reference, I love Midori Matcha's hojicha soft serve and see that as my gold standard. The toppings were delicious though! Both mochis were delightfully soft and chewy. Staff was very friendly. It is a new space, so it is clean and modern inside. It is not a large space though, so you might have a hard time finding seating if it's busy. You order at the counter or tablet then find your own seats. I recommend coming during non peak hours if you want to dine in without the chaos of finding a seat. read more

Truly a gem among the plethora of matcha places in LA. Their matcha is prepared to be more earthy tasting than anything else, and they have a so many ways to enjoy it whether that's the soft serve, parfait or latte. I tried the matcha parfait with warabimochi and the black sesame with mochi on separate occasions. I'm obsessed with black sesame, and they got the flavor down to its sweet nuttiness! Both types of mochi are on point - super fresh and none of that hard packaged mochi you get at the grocery store. The parfait is the perfect blend of flavors, but it's the variety of textures from the corn flakes, mochi and the jelly that make me keep wanting to go back. read more

Quick kiosk and front ordering. + Matcha Oat Latte ($7 + $1 oat milk): pricier side, and note that it comes unsweetened but was worth the strong matcha flavor, with the satisfying, lingering bitterness. Upon arriving there was a line. Possibly 10 people ahead. There was the option to order thru the kiosk or at the register. We ordered with a human. Customer service was great. The girl staff was sweet & friendly. I asked for recommendations and what she liked. She was pretty detailed. We got a few items. I ordered Hojicha & matcha parfaits to share. My friends got the Hojicha latte and brown sugar matcha. I was able to try the brown sugar matcha. I guess I m more of the sweeter end so I preferred more brown sugar. They added so little that there was literally no taste of brown sugar. One of the friends went to ask for more. The matcha tasted so much better afterwards. Matcha quality was not bad, but did it stand out compared to the many other matcha places? Not really... We enjoyed the Hojicha parfait more than the matcha. Hojicha was a a bit sweeter while the matcha was more earthy and leaving us with a slight bitterness in our throats. The parfaits came with wara mochi or reg mochi, cornflakes cereals ice cream, and etc.. The sesame pudding in the Hojicha was really good. The matcha pudding in the matcha parfait was good. What a great spot to spend a hot day with ice cream treats; as soon as I came into the store, I could feel the air conditioning, which felt great, and there was enough of seats so I could enjoy my ice cream comfortably. Great location!! read more
