Beartooth Cafe. Cooke City, MT. Late June, 2026. My husband and I were traveling from Red Lodge, MT to Yellowstone National Park (northeast entrance). Unfortunately, the Beartooth Pass was closed between Red Lodge and Cooke City because of snow and high winds -- so we took the longer route that included the Chief Joseph Highway and yet still encountered some snow and sleet on the high elevation Colter Pass. Upon reaching Cooke City, we were ready to treat ourselves with some hot beverages and a piece of dessert. We stumbled upon the Beartooth Cafe. Upon entering, we informed the hostess that we were interested in hot beverages and a dessert and she apologized that they offered only "plain coffee", not the specialty coffees of a restaurant down the street. Perfect, we didn't need a fancy roast. My husband ordered a hot coffee ($3.75), while I ordered hot tea ($3.75). We split a slice of Amish Apple Pie ($11.75). The pie was delicious, and tasted home-made. My husband's coffee was good, and I was offered a tray with tea options. However, by the time taxes and tip were added, we felt that $25 was just too much for two plain (non-specialty) beverages and a split dessert (even in a touristy area with a limited season). Our server was friendly, but we weren't offered refills of the coffee and/or tea until after we had already asked for our check and were ready to depart. The ambiance was Montana rustic. Had left Red Lodge, Montana early in the morning, to drive the Beartooth highway to the Yellowstone entrance. Knew we weren't going to find a lot of food options in Yellowstone, so chose to stop at the Beartooth Café before entering. Cooke city is a cute little town that was hopping at the end of August. We did have to wait 10 or 15 minutes for a table, but there is a cute souvenir shop right next-door that kept us busy while we were waiting. The restaurant staff is super friendly and helpful, and the food really hit the spot. We were grateful for the chance to get something good to eat and use the restroom before heading into the park. They also have a gas station so we could fill up and not have to worry about that either. If this is the route you were taking on your visit to Yellowstone, I would definitely recommend a stop here! read more

Cute find in a small town near the north entrance of Yellowstone. Very few food options so this cozy spot was packed. The hosts were very friendly and hardworking. Food was a simple and yummy find across from our motel. My burger was charred just right, the bun wad very dry; the side salad was deliciously crisp. My hubby enjoyed a juicy steak with mashed taters and veggies. This is a must stop when passing through this quaint town. Tip-be aware, no cell service anywhere in this town and WiFi is hard to find. Gotta love off the route dining joints you least expected to dine at when traveling. Yet this place happened to find us. A very eclectic joint and savory foods we enjoyed. So let me back track things, we we're scooping out our day journey through Yellowstone's Lamar Valley and I noticed Cooke, MT was a short distance from the end of the valley. After some research I saw it would be an excellent place for a respite & lunch. After some YELP scouting I located this quirky place and said hey we're gonna dine here. Our food was tasty & delicious, however it's very eclectic local decor a site you must see. Lots of bikers and fellow park travelers all gathering for a meal and all looking very satisfied like I was. Now one note and very other odd thing I saw with Franks own eyes was that is some of there local customers were armed. Armed with guns if you can believe that but I tried not to freak out. This kind lady looking very much like she transported in time from the 80's took our order and served us. She was very charming and very hospitable. We ordered a hotdog with grilled onions and a French Dip sandwich. Excellent work by the chef on his culinary skills they were amazing items. Now no French fries in the place so don't ask, just potato chips. A Huckleberry soda was a great finishing touch to help wash it all down. Burger was just plain store bought frozen burger cooked on a flat top. Noting special. Waitress didn't even ask if I wanted to add cheese or bacon. They do not have a fryer so no French fries here. Prices seems about 20% above others in the area. Nothing special. read more

I have been coming here for the past 20 or 25 years now when I go to Yellowstone and it is my stop for a bison burger. In years past the bison, burger was great, juicy and thick and warm toasty bun, but unfortunately, on my last visit 2 weeks ago, the bison meat has shrunk, and it was overcooked not juicy at all very dry. I was extremely disappointed. I also had the nachos which were very good and cup of chili beans, which were very good as well. Customer service was great a young friendly gal helped us very cheerful and polite I will give this place another shot next time. I'm around to see if it was a one time thing on the bison burger. read more

Stopped here on our way to Big Sky in June during a little spring/summer snowstorm! Sidney took care of us and was wonderful. I ordered a BLT without mayo and it came with mayo and she promptly took care of it. Hubby had a club sandwich. Both items were tasty. Staff here was super friendly. My biggest complaint is that it was freezing inside the restaurant. All the people dining were wearing their winter jackets because it was so cold. Cool surroundings (cabin cafe with records and beer labels on the walls in the bathroom, Montana books on a shelf, etc) Very nice, happy employees - they kept cheerfully joking with each other and seemed unburdened. Charming. Food was iffy at best. Salad was ... salad. Bison burger was a burger (below average). Trout was bad - farm raised and old, by the taste of it - tasted like old dirty pond fish rather than mountain stream fish, and I've had enough of both to know the difference. Also, no fries? Very odd. Lots of beers in the cooler, but only a couple unremarkable ones on tap - Moose Drool and one other. In any case...I wouldn't come for the food, but the experience was pleasant enough. After watching wolves in YNP, we drove to The Silver Gate-Cookie City to support wolf friendly businesses and grab some food. I specifically looked up which businesses to support during these trying times because I didn't want to boycott the entire city but only the businesses that are anti-wolf. I will not support businesses in this area who are anti-wolf because wolves are the reason people are out in Lamar Valley and all over YNP with their binoculars and telescopes to catch a glimpse of wolves ALIVE. This year the international visitors were missing but tons of our fellow Americans traveling within our beautiful country- so YNP was busier than normal. We visited in late September. I ordered the gyro sandwich, and my husband ordered their special Philly cheesesteak. We were promptly greeted by an employee and our order came out pretty quickly. They had some end of the season specials for beer- 6 local beers for $6. We passed on that but I thought it was a cool deal. The portions were very good and it came with chips (but you don't get to pick what kind you want- they gave us sour cream and onions). The food was fresh, nothing looked wilted or old. My gyro pita was soft, and they gave a lot of meat topped off with feta cheese, tomatoes, shredded lettuce, and cucumber yogurt sauce. I think everything in this area has to be shipped in, so given what they're working with, I thought they did a good job bringing freshness to the food. My hubs liked his order as well. We also ordered a cookie, and enjoyed splitting it between ourselves since it is a huge cookie. They're taking Covid precautions and required customers to wear a mask before entering and ordering inside. During late Sept they were only taking togo orders or eating your food on the patio. We wandered in here after a long day at Yellowstone. We were tired and hungry and Beartooth did not disappoint. This little cafe is so cozy and cute and they were able to accommodate 12 of us. We were served quickly. Our table ordered lasagna, trout, bison steak and chili. Everyone loved their meal and we left full and happy. The staff were wonderful also. For my visit here I had a dinner salad and a cup of clam chowder. Their clam chowder had way more clams in it than any other clam chowder I've ever had! I enjoyed my meal. I also really enjoyed the Huckleberry Soda. One of my sons had the meat lasagna and was very happy with it, my other son had clam chowder and a bison burger and was very happy with his meal. We had planned to do part of the Beartooth Highway and eat at the cafe in Mammoth, but so glad we decided to eat lunch in Cooke City instead! It's a charming town in a quiet, mountainous setting. No wait on a Monday at 11:30a but the lunch crowd did arrive which slowed down service toward the end of our meal. I ordered the Angus Steak Salad and it was plenty. Needing a place for dinner, but not wanting to eat at the restaurant in the hotel, I decided on this place based on the recommendation from the cashier next door at the trading post. I also did not want to really walk down the street to the bistro. Lazy, I know LOL! The restaurant was full inside, so the hostess said I was welcome to sit outside. It was in the 50s, but I was okay with being a bit cool Service needs to be improved, but the food is alright. I had to explain to the waiter as he was headed back inside after taking an order, I was the first to be seated and no one had come to my table after waiting 10 minutes. He apologized and quickly took my order. Here's what I had: Huckleberry wine - Delicious and sweet. If I had been more gutsy, I would've ordered a bottle and shipped home in my suitcase. Alas, I did not have the correct packing materials for wine. God forbid it would break in my suitcase because that would be my luck! Creamy tomato basil soup - Honestly, I have had better at the United airlines club, but I was cold, so I ordered this. It was too watery for me personally, though there was a decent flavor there. But for me, a creamy soup should be thick. Rainbow trout - This was breaded nicely, seasoned appropriately, and tender. This came with steamed vegetables, and you got to choose a side. I chose rice pilaf, which was nice. Both sides were pretty good. Poppy seed rum cake - This did not seem to have a lot of rum. I have had a real Jamaican rum cake (made by a friend's Jamaican grandma - the best ever of course when it's made by grandma!), and I was thinking there would be the same amount of rum. But alas, there was not. It was a good cake with poppy seeds, but I would drop the rum part from the name, as the rum was extremely subtle to me. Overall, once I received initial service, the wait staff appropriately checked on me to see that I was doing ok. I did notice one of the waitresses took some time while working, about 15 minutes, to chat with a friend. I think she preferred to be outside because it was so hot inside! read more

In general I must start with mentioning the friendly atmosphere. This place had a crew of bikers eating brunch on the porch, and these patrons welcomed my friend and I and offered a tour of Yellowstone on their bikes. When we were seated, our waiter was engaging and chatty. Additionally, Beartooth Cafe made an effort to provide vegetarian-friendly options, which is huge because most restaurants in the Yellowstone area are meat heavy and only offer a grilled cheese as a veg option. I had a Mediterranean veggie wrap and asked to have some pesto added. The wrap was tasty, nothing spectacular, but very affordable. The waiter suggested the French dip to my friend, Made with last nights roast beef on ciabatta. She loved it! Overall, the experience here was overwhelmingly positive and we recommend this place for all visitors! There is something for everyone! read more

We stopped in for lunch; family of five. A few burgers, gyro and a BLT. My wife's burger was raw and uncooked. Server immediately replaced it. My "Funk Burger" was missing the garlic as advertised; however, it was tasty. Kids enjoyed the gyro (albeit skimpy with the lamb) and BLT. Cute place. Friendly staff (they get 5 stars). It's a pretty simple place and a smaller menu but the burgers and spinach artichoke dip we ordered was great. The dip was big so don't get unless you are very hungry or have a group of 3+, a bit too much for just two, you can ask for more chips. GET THE MEATY STUFF Even after falling in love with the cuteness of the Bison in Lamar Valley, I had no qualms about ordering a Bison Burger here. I'm no expert--it tasted like a regular Beef Patty to me--but it was very tasty with good grilled smokiness. The Lettuce, Tomato, Onions and Pickles came on the side so you had the options of adding that yourself (I did) and didn't think the Burger needed any more condiments. With the added crunch from the oily, generic Potato Chips it all tasted great already. And I fought the outside cold with a bowl of Chili stuffed with chunks of Ground Meat, Beans, and Spices. While it tasted great, there was something slightly 'off' about the taste preventing me from saying it was homemade. Meanwhile the Trout Dinner came with Steamed Mixed Veggies, Mashed Potatoes, Soup and definitely came with enough for leftovers. The Trout was breaded in Panko and also came with lots of bones (but I won't rate something low because of natural things like that). So beware! Overall the flavor was pretty bland made worse since Veggies and Mashed Potatoes don't have a lot of flavors on their own too. FURNISHINGS ALL AROUND Beartooth Café is decorated in the almost obligatory fashion in this part of world--lots of wood on the walls and tin, vintage items as décor. However they love their Beer. After driving the Beartooth Highway, we stopped in Cooke City to grab a quick, light dinner before heading into Yellowstone. The place is rustic, and has a fun inviting atmosphere. We were impressed with the beer and wine choices, and decided to split the Nachos, they were good, but be advised the portion is huge, you could feed a family of four generously with the Nachos Supreme. I couldn't take my eye off the soup of the day, Ham and Pumpkin Spice, so decided to order a cup. I was pleasantly surprised, it was delicious. Perfectly seasoned, and hot. I love to order soup and have it served piping hot, not lukewarm. I am on the hunt now for the recipe to serve my family for a nice hot meal in the fall when pumpkin is in season. So first off this town has NO cell phone service. So it was hard trying to find a place we wanted to eat at. Luckily we looked across the street from where we are staying and noticed a line. Staff was super friendly. Because they were packed we waited for almost 20 minutes just to order drinks. We ended up sitting outside because they were packed and it was sorta nice. 10 minutes in, we got winds, rain, and thunder. Since we are from WA, didn't phase us. Just moved to a table with an umbrella. LOL tables were crooked and wobbled. Sticky tables. It hey, again, outside enjoying nature. Menu was small. Super small. There was 6 of us. 5 outta the 6 got the cheeseburger. Not disappointed. Homemade patties charbroiled. 1/3# patty. Was served with kettle chips and now I understand why. There is no way you could drink your drink, I recommend the huckleberry fizz, that huge burger and some potato chips. If you are coming thru, stop in for a burger and a drink. read more
