Went here several times while staying in Silver Gate. Every meal we had was good with no real complaints. Burgers, chili, fish, pastas, etc. Nothing out of the ordinary for the town, but it was good. I'm already looking forward to our next visit to the Northeast part of YNP to return for another meal at Beartooth Cafe. Among the too many places offering the same ole' tourist pub grub or pizza, the Beartooth had many choices for a vegetarian. Their hummus and veggie plate was outstanding and plated beyond what I'd expect for a lunch meal in a small town. I also had the Mediterranean Veggie Wrap. Both items were good sized portions even if the prices are rich, as expected for an area that must eke out their living during a short season. My wife got the smoked trout appetizer (12.95), but when it arrived, it was basically a meal in itself. As a former fish lover, I couldn't help but try a bite. It was amazing. Smoked, but not overpowering. The fish is brined before smoking and it had a very complex flavor of light smoke, sweetness, saltiness, etc. That is one dish that could get convert me back again! I looked at their website and would be a bit pressed to return for a dinner considering the prices and that their vegetarian options are fewer; however, it'd likely still be worth it to patronize a local business that is clearly trying hard where it can, like many others seem to, take for granted a potentially captive audience of diners especially on that side of the park. Cindi and I had lunch here today. We drove out of Yellowstone National Park in search of a good place to eat. We came into Cooke City and walked around the town. We came upon the Beartooth and liked the look of this funky little place. We got a table out on the boardwalk in front of the place so we could see traffic and people go by. We both ordered Bison burgers and they were great. Ours came with cheddar cheese and bacon and were cooked medium well. They were great. The only negative was that they didn't have French fries, only chips. I recommend that if you are leaving Yellowstone try the food here. You will like it read more

Everyone needs to avoid this AWFUL tourist trap in Cooke City, MT. The burgers don't come with fries or hash browns. You get stale potato chips. Who does that in 2017? My chicken sandwich was very dry and the hamburger bun was awful. They don't offer a whole wheat bun or Kaiser roll. Very overpriced. We both thought "Pilots Perk" is a better lunch choice. read more

We didn't know what to expect, running across the street in the pouring rain to this adorable little cafe in Cooke City, on the edge of Yellowstone National. We'd driven most of the day to get there, spent nearly 2 hours across the street waiting for an order that took 30 min to place, and ended up walking out and hoping this little shop would be better luck for us. We wish we'd started here but next time we'll just go straight here now that we know better! It's very eclectic inside, with small tables and decorations everywhere that give you plenty to look at. We were given a window seat since the main rush of the day was over and we were able to warm up and watch all the bikers from the Beartooth Rally going up and down the street while we waited for our food. The hostess was super friendly and we ordered the special of the day: pulled pork, chips and dill pickle slices. The sandwiches came within 15 minutes and were hands-down the best pulled pork sandwiches we've ever had in a restaurant. The meat was tender and well-sauced, without any tough or dry chunks and with just the right amount of fatty bits for juicy flavourful hits as you're taking mouthfuls of deliciousness. Honestly it was an amazing sandwich. The chips were nice because they didn't overshadow the sandwich and added a comfort-food kind of feel to the meal. The pickles were delicious and I wish there'd been more. All in all, we should have started here and next time we're in Cooke City we're eating here just to see what the rest of their menu is like! read more

My wife and I had visited the Bearttooth cafe a couple years back and had a great experience, so we decided to try again. Unfortunately, our experience was quite the opposite from our first time. The restaurant was a little busy, but not overwhelmingly; we had about a ten minute wait. Once we were sat, we weren't greeted by our server Zack for an additional ten minutes, despite seeing other tables sat after us, greeted before us. My wife ordered the trout dinner, that was good; I ordered the bacon wrapped sirloin, and requested medium rare (cool red center) and it came out still raw. It wasn't even cooked rare, simply still raw. This is after waiting over half an hour for our food. A different server saw the distress and offered to have it recooked which I was fine with, but when it was returned, there was still a majority of raw meat inside. Both the hostess and the female server had genuine concern for our situation; however, Zack never came back to check on us at all. I had to go in to request a check. Overall, it was a terrible experience. Extremely long times to be greeted, extremely long time for food, and all the wait was for nothing. If I had eaten that, there was sure to be food poisoning. Zack was so inattentive, that he was either poorly trained or didn't care. The only two employees that made it slightly better were the two petite females, server and hostess. I actually tipped them in cash more than I tipped my actual server because I could tell they were trying to right his wrongs. read more

Yelp didn't rate the Beartooth Cafe very high, but I'd like you to consider a few important features: 1) the chef makes a delicious lasagna, 2) the dessert menu is worth saving some room for, 3) the prices are reasonable, and 4) the wait staff is attentive and friendly. Additionally, the atmosphere is "pure Cooke City" - both indoors and out on the patio. The menu is more varied than the more highly touted restaurants in town. I stopped here again and I know better. Once again I ordered the 12 oz sirloin and was disappointed. It's a baseball cut sirloin that is the chewiest piece of meat known to mankind. The tortilla on my wife's veggie wrap was stale. No fries on the menu. Food comes with either tortilla or potato chips. We ordered 5 steaks, one of them to be medium cooked, the other 4 to be well done cooked. But the 'well done' steak is way too overcooked. They looked black on both side, and taste awful, hard to bite and swallow. This is the worst steak we ever eat in US. We talk to the manager or the boss. He told us this is what well done looks like! As I left, the hostess asked if I enjoyed my meal. I replied, "I'm sure you're trying very hard under difficult circumstances." That's the best I could do. A mediocre burger with a pre-formed, frozen buffalo patty was $10. Served with potato chips--the place doesn't have a deep fryer. The $10 boring-burger was a relatively inexpensive experience. A slice of lasagna with soup or salad is $16, compared to spaghetti at Wolfgang Puck's at the Denver airport, at airport prices, at Wolfgang Puck's prices, for $12. When I commented, the waitress explained that they have to ship stuff in. Unlike, say, Tonganoxie, Kansas, where they have lasagna trees. (A better explanation is that the tourist season is maybe six months, including snowmobile weather, so they try to compensate by doubling prices. No such problems in Tonganoxie.) The staff was pleasant and hard-working, the place was mostly clean, the thin, limp tablecloths were silly, the chef was sweaty. Oh, I almost forgot: through the kitchen door I noticed that the waitresses make salads with their bare hands. No, they do not have a chance to wash before or after, so their hands go from chairs to dirty plates to coughs to hairdos to your salad. Yum! Sometimes in small tourist towns you'll find a passionate chef who knocks out surprisingly good food. This isn't that place. read more

The beer selection was pretty good. My husband, Curtis, ordered the prime rib, which was $25.00. His supper came out and it looked like a different cut of meat. We asked the server and he knew he had mistakenly got his order wrong. What my husband got was a bison ribeye, which was $32.95. We had the option to send it back, but we didn't want to wait for the kitchen to prepare the prime rib. Curtis opted to just keep what he had, although he is not a big fan of bison. The server charged us the $32.95 for the wrong order. However, the manager corrected it and charged us half the cost of the bison. The four other entrees ordered were fair. read more

This place has some great bacon burgers. But only order that. The nachos we received did not have the cheese fully melted and the canned refried beans were also cold. In addition the chili was not good - stay away from it. The chili came semi warm and I actually find the canned chili sold at Costco to be better. So why am I giving this place three stars you may ask? Well for the location, the food is adequate, plus I'm voting mostly on the burgers. The people that run the joint are also extremely friendly and the overall atmosphere of eating here is wonderful. Lovely front porch for outdoor dining. They were very busy on a Tuesday night so service was harried and spotty, but apologetic. There are over 300 beers with local MT and WY beers on tap, and you can buy a huge homemade cookie for the road. The menu is meat heavy, as would be expected. They are careful to note that the bison steak is not from the Yellowstone herd, which made us laugh. The food came quickly after the initial delay in service, and was tasty. The burger was huge, served with potato chips. The garden salad has chunks of blue cheese, extra points, and sweet potato soup was thick and rich with a drollop of cream. AVOID: Ordered a bowl of chili and a plate of nachos. The chili had a very odd flavor, and some canned jalapeños on top. HORMEL would have been far better. The nacho plate consisted of a pile of broken chips and particles on the bottom, with a few large chips on top. Obviously poured bottom of a bag on our plate first. Topped by some kind of processed cheese sauce, canned jalapeños and some other stuff. Side of guac was half brown and tasteless. If your not going to prepare any of the food and simply spoon it out of industrial cans, at least buy better quality food. read more

In the quaint dinning room, you are greeted with smiling service and good food. There are over 100 beers on the menu! The menu is limited, but adequate choices are available. We were in Cooke City for 1 night before heading into Yellowstone Park for a few days. I preface this by saying this trip was for my parents' 50th Wedding Anniversary so it was important that we had good experiences. I usually do thorough review research on restaurants and hotels before going places but this time I took the advice of someone in Cooke City to go to the Beartooth Cafe. It was a mistake. Our waitress was very friendly, and admitted to us it was her 2nd night there. She had a great personality. My mom and I ordered the steak tip skewers with side salads and my husband and my dad ordered burgers. I asked if they had French fries (I was craving them) but she said that being that there is no sewer system in Cooke City they could not do fried food (only to learn later that the Miner's Saloon has French fries - so not sure what that was all about). We got our meals and when we asked the waitress about our salads she said "didn't I bring them over to you already?" So we had our salads along with our meal - which isn't a big deal but just noteworthy. My steak tips were ice cold and purple on the inside. I couldn't even run my knife through it it was so incredibly raw. It dawned on me that she never asked how I would like my steak cooked. It just came to me that way. I can eat rare meat but this was purple uncooked meat! I realized that the waitress never asked any of us how we would like the meat cooked. My mom got rice pilaf instead of potato and it was a cold pile of mush. It didn't even look like rice. She asked for a sweet potato instead and the waitress swapped it out and I gave her my steak tips and they recooked them. When I got my food back the baked potato was super cold on the inside and super dry. I will be honest, I have never sent food back before b/c I'm pretty relaxed and will usually eat anything. And I'm usually not one to complain too much about food, but this was an HUGE disappointment. When I was cashing out the waitress(a different one than who served us), cashed me out. She asked "how was everything?" I said "Honestly, I'm not one to usually complain but this was really disappointing" and I told her about our experience. She said "Oh ok. That will be $75 please". I was a little in shock at the lack of response in her part and just laid the bill. She said "Have a good night" and walked away. That just sealed the deal for me. I am not a food or dining snob at all. I was a server for many years when I was younger so I know about restaurants and how they work. This was just not a good experience and was made worse by the lack of response when I mentioned something. And it is a bad dining experience that my parents will remember from the 50th wedding anniversary trip too unfortunately. read more

This is our absolutely favorite place to eat when we visit Yellowstone. This time my husband got the Funk Burger (yummm, garlic!) and I got the spinach artichoke dip and tortilla chips. We split a mocha mousse for dessert that I am still thinking about, a week later. Dang, it was good. Do you think they could send me one overnight, in dry ice? Anyway, I've eaten here about a half dozen times -- everything I've ever had here has been delish. They're very friendly and we always look forward to going back again the next year. read more
