Cutest little country kitchen i've ever been to. Tucked away just outside the east entrance of Yellowstone is a tiny little town of Silver Gate and this lovely little Log Cabin Cafe . My wife and I mistakenly drove 45 minutes or so in the wrong direction , left the park thinking we would loop back to yellowstone lake and back down to the Grand Tetons.... turned into a happy accident because we had a great breakfast at the log cabin cafe. Very small menu but everything is scratch made with love. The thick cut house made hash browns are the best ever, the waitress said they soak the potatoes in a brine and you can taste the love!!. My wife ordered the french toast and it was excellent! This tiny little spot is literally a log cabin and has some nice taxidermy and all the country charm you could ask for. Location is incredible, surrounded by majestic mountain scenery. If you are visiting lamar valley to check out the Bison , do yourself a favor and get lost like we did and go to silver gate for breakfast or lunch!! A decent place to start your day in the Yellowstone NP! They are a family owned business and have been around for a long time. It was really lovely choosing to eat here - the interior of the place will take you back ages as its fully made of wooden logs with bears staring down at you while you eat :D We had hot brewed coffee (with unlimited refills), the French toast served with fresh fruit (which was of right portion and very good) and the blueberry pancakes (which were really big portions and would ideally be enough for 2 people). While we were dining, we were also entertained by the owner in some interesting trivia facts about Silver Gate and Soda Butte creek etc. Would highly recommend this place if you are visiting Yellowstone! (tip: they are a few minutes away from Cooke City, MT which has a nice espresso place) read more

Went to this little cafe while in town for a wedding. You got to get the homemade pumpkin made daily. Also, biscuits made from scratch the whole business. The service was warm and friendly. I loved the rustic feel inside. I ordered the biscuits and gravy and immediately you get that yummy sage flavor with the homemade biscuit and creamy sauce. Definitely a good start to the day. My husband ordered their cowboy breakfast. He is picky when it comes to how his eggs are prepared and he soothes absolutely nailed it. Tomorrow we want to try the pancakes which is a 90 year old recipe still being used today. Highly recommend if you're in the area. read more

On a weeklong road trip and this is the only place we purposely stopped for breakfast. We stayed next door at the Grizzly Lodge and another guest there told us about it. We visited on July 5th. Service was outstanding. Our male server (whose sister was the cook). made sure to tell us the kitchen was a little behind because there were a few large table ahead of us and they were short-staffed. It might have taken 20 minutes for our order to come out, but we didn't mind because the ambiance was relaxing and area appropriate! I had to get the pancakes from a 80+ year old recipe and my husband had to get the trout special with hashbrowns. We both made excellent choices!! Those were some of the best pancakes and hashbrowns I've ever tasted! All employees that we saw (4) were young and very efficient, friendly, and professional! read more

While visiting Yellowstone National Park, my family and I had an early start driving Lamar Valley. We decided to go all the way to the boarder and grab breakfast outside the park. On a whim, we went to the first cafe we saw. The sun was shining so we sat outside on picnic benches under the snow capped mountains and it was a beautiful setting. We could see big horn sheep on the mountain across the road as well. The food was incredibly delicious, great coffee too! Bacon and pancakes were perfection, and everyone in our group RAVED about the hash browns. One person in our group was in a wheelchair and while it's not fully accessible, he was still able to navigate the gravel outside with some help and even used the restroom which is around back with a short wooden ramp. We also heard the staff talking about the new ownership as of this season and how a family is running the place. Love to see it! They are currently only open for breakfast. read more

We stopped in for a late lunch break from visiting Yellowstone National Park. I had the fresh Idaho trout filets that were excellent. Fresh, juicy and lightly breaded to perfection. The rest of the group had the smoked salmon wrap that was just as good. The wraps came with a side salad as did the trout. The place was quaint and a genuine step back in time. The cafe dates back to the early 1960''s evidenced by the antique menu that hasn't changed much since. This was such a nice change from the park lunch options we'd endured for several days. This restaurant is under new ownership. Have been going to there for years whenever I visit this spectacular area. It has been the 'go to' place for breakfast in the Cooke City/SilverGate vicinity. Only open for two hours on Sunday (10a-12n). Otherwise 7a-12n other days. At this point they accept cash only. Service was EXCELLENT despite a large crowd on Sunday waiting for the restaurant to open. Menu is limited. Their world famous pumpkin bread is the same recipe as the previous owners and is DELICIOUS. Most of us had the 'traditional breakfast' (eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, toast). It was average. read more

It is REALLY important for you Yelp watchers to know that this restaurant has CHANGED OWNERS. Have heard nothing but great things about this cafe since it was newly purchased last Fall. A very old a d cozy place. Quite small with a small menu. Today Barbra and I both had a Beartooth burger. I had Swiss cheese and she had cheddar. Both came with chips as they were out of most things. This is to be expected as it is near the end of the season. Burgers were very good SS were the chips. They serve beer and wine as well as soft drinks. Well worth the trip. They always have trout dinners on the menu. Worth a visit. So give them a try you will like it. read more

Hailing from Los Angeles I tend to fall into that cliche trap of whole hearted belief that the only decent Mexican food in the world comes from our city (including, yes, México...I know, I know. A random decision to drive Highway 212 through Custer National Forest instead of stopping in Red Lodge, due to poor planning and having all rooms fully booked in that town, led me to find the quaint Grizzly Bear Lodge in Silvergate, Montana, and shortly after checking in, having my worldview totally shaken. Next to the Grizzly Bear Lodge, the small and aptly named Log Cabin Cafe was thankfully still open and serving food at 8:00pm. They were out of the Trout special (and most brands of beer) thanks to my late arrival, but this turned out to be the best happenstance I could've imagined. The other special was, of all things in the mountains of Montana...enchiladas. Being hungry, and allowing that even if just adequate it would likely fill me up, I ordered one chicken and one chorizo, with red and green sauce depending on chefs determination. A few minutes later, I was digging in, and the first bite alone taught me how wrong I was in my assumption. Complex flavors, just the right kick of spice, and the exact amount of melted cheesy goodness made me a believer. Chef Phreddy, who apparently roams the country making believers out of his handiwork, has another disciple. I don't think he is here much longer, but if you have the chance to stop in soon, come see him and see if your world changes too. And if this is the level of chef the Log Cabin staffs, then it's worth visiting anytime. The atmosphere, with the mountains surrounding on all sides, the clean air and subtle smell of campfire mixed with pine trees, and (at the moment writing this) the distant lovely singing from some vacationers (who are actually very talented), have made this a memorable moment that I won't soon forget. read more

Wow! Just wow! After driving all the way across Yellowstone park and seeing tons of wild animals we were hungry and came up to this Log Cabin Cafe. Don't pass this place by because it looks small. Oh my goodness! This place was the best stop of our vacation so far. Our friends ordered a burger and a pepper steak sandwich. My husband ordered smoked salmon wrap and I got a salmon burger. Everything was delicious! Our friend said the pepper steak sandwich was the best she's ever had. So afterwards we ordered dessert. Blueberry pie and strawberry-rhubarb pies. So yummy! Extremely grateful it was open. We had been driving for awhile and were starving. We were afraid it wasn't open as no one else was there but when we popped in a nice man said yes we are open. I got rainbow trout and my father & husband got burgers (one Elk one Beef). The food was fine. You have to remember you are in the middle of no where. We all ate it. I think a few us would choose something else next time but that wasn't because of the food more our taste. The guy running the place is a hard worker. Topping off a terrific day in the Beartooth Mountains we had a late lunch at the Log Cabin Cafe. It looked perfect from the outside, inside was also true to the log cabin theme-Awesome!! This is the worst meal I've eaten in a restaurant, and I'm not dramatizing. I can't think of a worse one. We called to confirm their dinner hours and were told they were only serving their lunch menu. Okay. It still looked good from what we saw online. What they did not say is they were only serving a few things off the lunch menu. We were the only patrons, but it was quiet overall in town. We were brought water, without ice. The menu was drastically different from what we saw online. They claimed to have bison burgers, but the menu just said beef and elk. I asked to order the trout. They didn't have it. They also didn't have the pepper steak or the salmon wrap listed. All that was available was a burrito, a burger, or grilled cheese. I chose grilled cheese with tomato soup. So did my friend. Another ordered the chicken burrito, and our vegetarian friend got the tempeh burger. The menu said the grilled cheese was served on Texas Toast. When it came, it was quite literally a slice of American cheese on generic wheat bread. It was served with a pickle, which was the best part of the meal. The tomato soup was incredibly bland. Everyone said their food was bland. The burrito had very little meat and was completely stuffed with unseasoned, canned black beans. We ordered the famous pumpkin bread for dessert. It actually was tasty but was not baked through. Part of it was raw batter. When it came time to pay, our server made us follow him to the register on the porch, and despite claiming to take credit cards when asked, they said the credit card machine wasn't working (they refused to even try it when my friend asked) and insisted we pay cash. I haven't the foggiest idea how this place has any good reviews. I can only guess it used to be good and maybe someone bought it and it's gone downhill fast. Don't eat here. Without a doubt, you can get better food ANYWHERE else. read more

Before making this review I had to double check I had the right restaurant based on the previous reviews noting good things. Maybe the place was sold since. In any event, the food was average to terrible. My salmon was freezer burned. The service was terrible. The commotion in the kitchen sounded like we were at a zoo as opposed to a quaint Montana dining spot. At least 3 groups walked in looking to be seated and simply left because nobody was attentive to them. Don't waste your dollars here. read more

Log Cabin Cafe Silver Gate MT 1937. Everything here is a throwback (in the best possible way) to mid-twentieth century American rustic travel. Can't believe it still exists.  Extremely remote from anything other than wilderness. Located just north of Yellowstone's most remote region, high in the Apsaroka Mountains (or equivalent).  Nearby lodge, cabins and stores all log construction. Very much the perfect place to relive the era. The wilderness is still the same, so.... Today they're out of their legendary trout, so I can't comment. Burgers were fine including the salmon burger. Best wildlife viewing ever today. Saw five different bears on the way here from Yellowstone. Of course vast herds of bison and elk. And the mountains sheep. And a moose at the edge of town. Silvergate is barely above a ghost town but just perfect. I need to come back and stay here. read more

Came here after drive the Beartooth highway, which is a very scenery road outside of the northeast gate of Yellowstone Park. Looks like a very cozy place with homemade food. We decided to give it a try. We ordered the rainbow trout for entree and smoked salmon for appetizer. The trout is good, came with a side and a salad. The surprise is the smoked salmon. It's very generous portion, and the salmon goes perfect with cream cheese and the cracker. We were so satisfied by this appetizer. Definitely one of the best smoke salmon I had in a while. The price is good too, considering it's in so close to the park, and you don't have many options at all when come to food. read more
