Beatrix Market is ideal for lunch especially while I'm doing the vegan 30 day challenge. They have a robust salad bar, complete with a hummus table, seven or more types of rice, grains from all over the world and at least two vegan soups. Today I had a salad, added in some roasted kale from the the hot bar, threw in some Himalayan rice and a side of vegan lentil soup. Nice healthy lunch for under ten bucks. I love this place. Yes, I do spend $15 on lunch sometimes... but, their buffalo chicken meatballs are actually to die for. They recently posted their menu for the hot bar on their website, so that you don't have to be surprised. The salad bar is always insanely fresh. Lines may be long, but it does go by quickly. Awesome! I went for lunch during work and was blown away by both the ease and the freshness of ingredients. I have been trying to find healthier places to eat lunch in the city and am so glad I found this place. I filled up by bowl with kale, spinach, various veggies/seeds, and chicken, expecting it to be 15+ dollars and was surprised when it came out to just over 10. You can't get the freedom to choose ingredients at that price anywhere in the city! Service was great and friendly and the ambiance was so nice I decided to just sit and eat it there. This place is AMAZING!! The food is fantastic, the staff is polite and knowledgeable and the variety is insane. The hot food options change weekly so there is always something new. The only downside to the location is the smallish space to find your food. I went when it was fairly slow but I can imagine how crazy packed it can get in there. THERE IS ALSO A COFFEE BAR! Awesome fresh food. I do the salad here literally every day I am in town. The zhoug is everything on a salad and the variety of lettuces, toppings, and vinegars(!!) keeps it fresh (pun intended) and interesting. For all you keto people out there they also do bulletproof coffee, which is a little overpriced IMO, but not having to keep MCT oil and butter around the office is nice. Breakfast eggs are amazing as well. Haven't tried most of the hot foods, but that looked less interesting to me personally. I also see them regularly checking temperatures, which means they take food safety seriously. read more

OMG! This place is the real deal. If you are getting tired of the limited options we have in the loop to buy salads ( that tend to be both overpriced and have too much dressing), this is the place to be. The salad bar is phenomenal, great variety and you can build it yourself. Aside from salads there is also an area for hot foods and coffee bar tucked away in the back. I truly believe that the menu is diverse enough to include items that can please the pickiest eater. I am worried that this place will get packed but they seem to have a great system going to get people checked out with ease. Update to my last post as I've now tried the salad bar and transitioned from the hot food bar. I really like the salads here too. My only complaint is very minor and it's that they make you weigh the little container of dressing for your salad too. You're probably right if you're thinking I need to stop being cheap but it's the principle in my opinion. All other restaurants consider the dressing to come with the salad or to be a condiment but here you have to weigh it and pay for it. What about the people I've seen come in and grab some dressing in the the little container and walk out? Anyway, let me get off my soap box. Don't let this deter you from trying the salad bar but more so just serve as a warning that the dressing isn't free. Also heard that the reason for this is because they make their dressings in-house. Maybe they should consider selling it then in bottles. Just a thought. read more

This is my current, "it's too cold to go far at lunchtime" spot - generally a decent salad bar, with lots of options, and a selection of hot foods. While I can always find a decent thing to eat in a pinch, I wouldn't consider this place to have the best variety - they have a lot of stuff, but day in and day out on any given week, it feels like it's usually the same stuff. It's a good place, and the standard fare makes this place reliable, just not exciting. read more

Really happy about this addition to the Chicago lunch scene. As far as salad bars go it's pretty thorough and easily the best greens selection I've seen yet. All the meat is of good quality as well and I even dig many of the prepared salads in the rotation. The Mediterranean bar leaves a little to be desired, especially since there's so many options to find that in the area. It does get a little cramped, but I feel like we're all here for the same person (to eat relatively healthy food) so it feels like everyone's working towards the same goal haha. Located at Franklin and Randolph, this is a lunch gem on the first floor of a giant office building in the loop (don't walk all the way to the address at wacker, just go to franklin and Randolph, you'll see the sign). The décor is fresh and bright, and there are a lot of lunch options with a hot food bard, soups/rolls station, hummus bar, and 2 rows of salad bar. The options are extensive, and at $8.99/lb, more reasonable than a lot of other similar self serve style places in the loop. They also have a coffee bar in the back with pastries, and some fun drink options. If you don't have time for self serve, there are prepacked snacks/meals in a refridgerated section a la pret-a-manger. Definitely will be back! read more

Stopped in for lunch yesterday and it was great! I was impressed with all of the fresh food options, including pea shoots, sliced grapefruit, hummus, and more! The quality of food was great. It is build your own and they charge you based on weight, which can be tricky for big eaters. They have hot food as well, which included mashed potatoes, rice, chicken wings, asparagus, fish, and more. The food was very healthy and they had clear signage for people with dietary restrictions (vegan, gluten free, etc). A great option in the loop. read more

The food is great - there are healthy choices, vegetarian choices, and delicious and less healthy choices. Despite the high volume and number of people, everything is clean and the food is fresh. The service is good. They are constantly checking and refilling the food trays. The cashiers are quick and friendly even when there's a long line. read more

I'm so happy this place is in the lobby of my building. It's relatively quick, convenient, and they always offer numerous healthy options. They have a hummus bar, hot bar, soup options and some pre-packaged quick pick up and go items. Love this place and I'm so happy it's in the lobby..the other two spots before them sucked horribly (ate at one of them sparingly and the second one was so sketchy looking, it made my skin crawl). read more

Overall, this slightly upscale food bar is a nice asset to this part of the Loop. The salad bar is very good, and depending on the day, the hot food bar can have some nice offerings. However, their attempts with ethnic dishes usually fall short. Overall the price per pound is a little high. Pizzas are ok, with the thin crust vegetable being the standout. Beatrix is Beatrix no matter where you encounter one, and that's just one of the things that I love about this chain. I get their bullet coffee which is totally unique, unlike any other, and is only available here . . . at Beatrix. Their pastries are otherworldly: huge, artistically creative with appealing visual characteristics that you see nowhere else, and mouthwatering. Everytime I think I am half way through sampling their vast selection they introduce new choices and retire old ones. It is constantly changing in a good way, so there's no time to get tired of their offerings. Because this location is an adjunct to 155 N Wacker, it is smaller, so there is less room to sit, but there is a green area out front that offers great benches where you can sit in one of the busiest pedestrian areas of the city and people watch while you dine on your delicious carbohydrates. I'm addicted, but it's a wonderful fetish and I cherish the ritual as much as the event itself. read more

On one hand, it's a cool location with lots of fresh drinks, breakfast items, a salad bar, fresh baked goods, etc. On the other hand, it's awfully redundant. There's just so much of the "grab and go" concept a city needs. Really, how many people are in such a rush, they have to sprint into a food place, grab something in a tizzy, overpay for it, run out the door and stuff their face on the way to the next place they need to be? Personally, I don't know anyone that busy that they don't have a moment to sit and enjoy a meal, and I sort of pity those that think they don't. All I thought after paying close to 14 bucks for a colorful salad consisting of a multitude of veggies, ancient grains and quinoa that's also sold at every grocer in Chicago, is to yawn at the idea of a gimmick that has been overcooked too many times over. Yes, everything from the coffee to the muffins are tasty, yet there's a zillion competitors ready to reel us in. There's only so much need and so much of a want. read more

Let me start by saying that the food is great. The salad bar is amazing, the hummus bar is unique and there are many other great foods to talk about, including breakfast. This is also in the building I work at, so extra amazing. This alone, I'd give it a 4.5 (not a 5 because outside of the hot bar, the selection rarely changes). But here are the bad things to offset it: 1) The person that designed this layout either wasn't thinking clearly or never anticipated it being this busy. Forget getting in here between 11:30 and 1. It's a madhouse and so overwhelming; I just put the container down and walk away. There are people's bag hitting you, confused people who don't want to snake around the salad bar that try to swim upstream in an already too small place, workers ignoring the empty diced chicken bins to stir and replenished the picked radishes or other random stuff people don't usually eat, etc. I'm relieved when I make it out without spilling, tripping or running into someone. Half the seating needs to be removed and the whole food area pushed out; 2) It's expensive, like really expensive. Hard to get out with a salad under $12 because everything is weighed; 3) It's missing some basics, like liters of water. I'll stop in in the AM to pick up some oatmeal, a coffee (which is really good) or some eggs and want to just grab a water if I forget mine, but nothing but designer water. What happened to a liter of smart water? I have to walk to the store next door to Bea's to then buy water. read more
