I found this salon by searching for stylists in Delaware that are certified to do Deva Cuts. I'm really pleased to have met Darlene Regan, and I had a great experience. I'm always careful to find stylists who specifically say they have experience with curly hair, and I was unable to find anyone in Dover, where I live. My stylist of 8 years no longer does hair, and I just heard about this "Deva Cut" thing, so I made the trip to Hockessin to see what Darlene could do. Because it was my first visit, I got the "Deva Cut and initial consultation" service. I only waited a minute or two before Darlene was ready for me. We chatted for awhile about my hair, what I'm looking for, what she can do, and she showed me her portfolio, which was a series of before and after photos on her Pinterest page. She took her time, answered all of my questions, and explained what we were going to do for the rest of the appointment. The Deva Cut is difference because the stylist cuts your hair while it's dry, in order to see how your curls fall and get the best shape for you. Darlene was great about stopping periodically to show me the progress and get my feedback. Next, Alyssa washed my hair and applied product. Both Darlene and Alyssa were really communicative with me, helping me see and feel how much conditioner to leave in my hair and how much of each product to use. This was great, because if they hadn't had me touch my hair as we went along and showed me exactly how much product they used, I wouldn't have ever known how much care and moisture my hair really need. Next, I sat under the hair dryer/diffuser, which looked like a 1960s sci fi mod-type spaceship, and that was cool. Finally, Darlene finished the style and cut. Because she took before photos of my hair, I was able to see exactly how amazingly different my curls looked with appropriate care and style. I'm really, really happy with what she did with my hair! The whole process took about 2 hours, and very little of that was wait time. I'm sure it will take less time the next time I go, since I won't need the consultation. I'm excited to have a stylist that understands curly hair. I was a little guarded about the product upsell, but the truth is that the Deva Cut is associated with Deva Curl products, so there's a push to buy the products, too. Darlene wasn't pushy about it at all, which I really appreciated. At the very end, Darlene gave me a brochure about the Deva Curl line of products and handy check list of products that she recommends specifically for me. I see that this salon is rated as being in the moderate price range. I would say it's pricey for me; I've been getting $40 hair cuts for several years. But, because it's located in Hockessin, and this visit included the consultation, it probably is fair to say that the price is moderate. My 2 hour cut, style, and consultation was $65, so you be the judge for yourself. The cons for me are the commute and the price. However, I only get my hair cut about 3 or 4 times a year, so the price isn't too big a deal. My experience was great and I'll go back. read more

Went to get the ends trimmed, now my hair that was previously past my shoulders barely reach past my ears. I politely pointed out during the haircut that it looked like too much was being taken off, but she continued to butcher my hair. By far the Deva curl cut I've ever had....my hair has the horrible pyramid shape that this style of hair cut is supposed to prevent!! Maybe they need to do some refresher courses?? I will not be returning this salon, and I don't recommend risking doing your deva curl cut here. read more

Update: So basically I need to respond to the "Owner" responding to my previous post. You can scroll down for the details. I would like to address the first issue about standing them up for a 5 hour balayage for a previous appointment which is completely false. I cannot believe they would lie about that. It's true that I made a previous apt for which I could not go and called them well in advance to cancel. I did not initiate another booking at that time. Initially I had walked into the salon for a consultation for a balayage. I spoke to the owner Saiko and she gave me input and what I should get done and how much it might cost. No final price because it depends on what you get done, which is understandable. We talked about it and i scheduled a appointment with the front desk. After I left, i receive a call about 10 mins later saying they need a deposit for my appointment. I proceeded to ask why they are calling me after I left the salon for the deposit rather than mentioning that at the salon or when I was making the appointment. Realizing their mistake they didn't take the deposit. A couple of months later I decided to give them another shot and schedule an appointment over the phone. For again which they did not ask for a deposit. I would think if someone stood them up for a 5 hour apt they would have asked for a deposit the second time around?! Anyways things come up/its life and like I said previously I value my time as well as others and therefore wanted to give them a well advance time to accommodate my reservation. I don't know about other people but I like to review and read reviews on google, yelp so I'm not wasting hard earned money. Someone also left a response on my yelp account which I'm posting saying who even takes yelp seriously. If its not that serious, why are they even wasting time responding. If anyone wants to support a business who treats their customers like this.. that's fine but no need to even think I would step foot in such an establishment again. read more

It took Connie 2.5 hrs to do a pedi and full set of acrylics. One week later five nails had broken off. Contacted the salon and they offered to re polish the broken ones but not fix them. I have been getting my nails done for 20 yrs and this place is the worse. And the price is crazy $135 for a pedi and full set. read more

Very impressed with the protocols Saiko put in place to keep clients and staff safe during the pandemic. Not only does she do great color (my wife's family says that her color is the most natural they've ever seen), this is the safest Salon in Delaware. read more

I was in the market for a new salon and, because I have curly hair, I decided to try out Beauty Bar for a DevaCut. I was hopeful that getting a haircut specifically for curly hair would be worth the long drive to the salon. Unfortunately, it was a big (and pricey) disappointment. Though my hair looked nice when I left the salon, as the day went on and my curls relaxed a bit, it became clear that the cut was *very* uneven. My prior stylists have painstakingly cross-checked the cut to be sure that any unevenness that my curls might be hiding gets corrected, but not this one. I'm not sure if it was the stylist's decision or if it's part of the DevaCut, but the dry-cutting method left lots of random long bits mixed in, and there was only minimal cross-checking (mostly visual, rather than careful inspection) that would have revealed these overlooked pieces as well as the overall lopsidedness. After they missed these obvious issues, I wasn't about to drive the 30+ minutes out to the salon again and have them fix it, so I ended up trimming the most obviously uneven areas myself as a temporary fix. It's still pretty visibly uneven, though--one side touches my shoulder and the other doesn't. I'm now just waiting for my hair to grow out enough to get a new cut somewhere else much closer and for a much better price. read more

The customer service of this establishment is just awful. I had to call 3 times and send 2 emails in order to get a response. I am a bride-to-be planning a wedding, which is super stressful in of itself; when I finally did receive a response, nearly 2 weeks later from my date of initial contact, there was no apology for responding late, and assumptions were made in their response. They assumed I was seeking makeup services for only 1 person, when that was simply not the case and never said. Going off of that incorrect assumption, they suggested I go to a salon on a very stressful and important day. I contacted this establishment because their website indicates they offer "on the go" services, yet they turned me away. It simply makes no sense. I would not recommend this establishment because of its terrible customer service. Take your money elsewhere - I did. read more

It doesn't get any better than Beauty Bar By Saiko! I live in Manhattan and people stop me on the street and ask me who does my hair. SERIOUSLY! They are shocked when I tell them I go to Delaware to get my hair cut! Saiko is that amazing! Her salon is also the nicest in town and she's on top of all the trends. She's got a very modern, stylish space with extra comfy chairs. Her staff is super friendly, professional, and experienced. They always makes sure to bring me a green tea as soon as I get there, which I love. I've had a massage, mani-pedi and bought some great organic makeup and shampoo/conditioner there. It's the perfect one stop shop. I've sent numerous relatives, friends and strangers to Saiko and they have all been very satisfied customers. If you need a spa day, this is the place to go. You'll have a great time and come out looking amazing. JUST GO THERE! read more

Saiko is SOOO sweet, and helpful and treats her customers well. She went out of her way for me on a couple of occasions because they are one of the only salons in DE who carry (or at least they used to) Kevin Murphy products. But their customer service from their front desk staff and some stylists is down right rude. This happened before covid. There used to be a male stylist who worked here but he is not on their web page anymore so I have no idea if he is there. His station was in the corner. He was a complete asshole to me for no reason one day. I came in to purchase my usual shampoo and conditioner and styling products that I buy every 2 months. I brought the products to the counter and the receptionist asked for my name and I told her and then she said what stylist do you see and I said oh sorry I just buy my products here I don't have a stylist here (I already had a stylist long before I started buying KM products from Saiko and I have no desire to change stylists). And the man chimed in and I guess he thought he was making a joke but he was loud and in front of other customers said, yeah it looks like you get your hair done in someone's garage. And the stuck up bitch customer started laughing with him. I was humiliated and mortified. I didn't even know what to say or do so I just finished my transaction and left and cried the entire drive home. Honestly I wish I had just walked out and not bought anything or told him to go f himself. I have no idea why a stylist would say something like that to someone they don't know and to someone who is purchasing products from that salon. Then once covid hit and because I didn't want to come back to the salon and I knew they sold the products online (plus Saiko shipped products to my house during the first part of covid when everything was shut down) I emailed them to see if I could place an order for some KM products and either have them shipped or do curbside pickup. No response. So then I called and they never answer so I left a message inquiring about the KM products and if what I wanted was in stock and no one returned my call. So I placed an order with another stylist I know in a different state for $275 worth of KM and Saiko lost a customer for good. read more

Saiko has been doing my hair for over 10 years! I strayed a little when I moved to NYC, but am back and will never stray again. I really only stopped seeing her because I was visiting my Delaware family far less often than I had expected, and if anything it taught me even more just what a gem Saiko's talent really is. She's the only person I trust 100% with my hair. I'm a fashion designer and I know my stuff when it comes to clothes, but I couldn't tell you a thing about hair! I always let her do her thing because she's the expert and she knows best! In the end, I always love it and get tons of compliments. She is the only person I've ever gone to who always manages to give me real "style", and without me having to try to describe what I want. I have 7 friends and family members that also go to Saiko (including my mom!), and they all appreciate her as much as I do. Ha, my mom would laugh if she knew I was writing this... but can I say that Saiko has managed to make her look younger and more beautiful! You could never guess her age :) Lastly, I have to mention that her salon is SUCH a great experience overall. It has a really inviting and stylish look, and the staff are all very nice and always professional. I've been meaning to try some of the spa services, which my friends tell me are amazing. I walked in, masks were required. Good. I had my temperature taken before any next steps to check in. Good. Saiko - owner & stylist made sure there was santizer on every station. She wore a mask AND face shield. I felt like my my health was taken into consideration & I really appreciated the courtesy. Highly recommended. read more

I wanted to change salons because my stylist was in medical leave. I am sorry I did! A friend of mine recommended this place because the do a great job with her curly hair and have stylists that specialize in that type of hair. My request was easy, and I left with exactly the opposite result that I expected and discussed with Saiko. My hair has at least 5 different shades of brassy, uneven highlight. There are parts of my hair that look like bleach stains on dark clothes. $250 to the trash but it hurts the most is looking my dry over processed hair . read more

Visiting from out of town, my friend and I called ahead of time to make an appointment to both get our nails done. We show up on time, and are told to wait.......we seat ourselves, 35 minutes pass by without even being acknowledged once! There were a couple employees that seemed to be wandering around, walked by us and looked at us a multiple times, but said nothing to us. We finally just left. read more

I will never go back to this salon I had my hair done in the spring at Beauty Bar and was super impressed until a professional left lighter on my hair for well over an hour. Needless to say my hair broke off! I went in for ombre and came out with all over highlights..I even brought pictures of what I wanted for an example.As soon as she started blow drying my hair I noticed more than a few strands in her hand.. red flag. Two days later I washed my hair and my hair began to break off and left like elastic... my hair was super healthy prior to that and I had long layers. I was respectful and called the salon asking to speak to Emily and she had me come in, she covered the bleach blonde pieces that were an inch long, up with a glaze and put a deep conditioner in, the color didn't take and my hair felt worse. I requested my money back and I was told Saiko doesn't wish to give you your money back because having you return is a pricy service that we did for free. Well well then okay. Over the next few months my shoulder length hair began to break off more and more everytime I washed my hair. I should have fought harder for my money and reported Emily to the cosmetology board because no one should leave lighter on for more than an hour. I guess I was just so upset having my hair break off. I went back to a more pricy but fantastic stylist in Wilmington near the riverfront and finally was able to get a longer Bob now that my hair is in better shape 6 months later. This place rocks, I love the work Kathy does with my hair. I'm not originally from this area of the country, and had been disappointed over and over again with cuts, colors, etc from other salons. I thought perhaps I was destined to have crappy hair while I lived here. But not so! Kathy is amazing. She knows what I want before I even say it :-) And the staff at the salon is very friendly too. The only time I would say I was less than satisfied is with a waxing I received, but I would still very highly recommend this salon to anyone looking for amazing treatment :-) read more

I have been going to Saiko and Carmen for years. I have never been disappointed. I usually have a double process and a cut. My hair has been through plenty of abuse and it is still very healthy. I don't do traditional cuts or colors and to find a salon that can give me exactly what I want every time is fantastic. I get stopped a few times a day about my hair and I alway tell them where I go. read more

I got my a DevaCut by Peter. He was very friendly and made me laugh during my entire session. He made sure I was content with my cut and kept asking me questions about my hair along the way. He was even nice enough to give my mom a cutting tool because I told him she enjoys cutting our curls at home! The only problem that I had with him is his styling process. I just came back from my first Deva Cut appointment with Darlene at the Beauty Bar by Saiko, and I am SO pleased with the results! I was nervous going into the appointment, having never had my hair cut at an actual salon before. Asked for brown and walked out with maroon hair. Ended up spending 300 elsewhere to have it fixed. I never complained initially because she was so proud of herself and pleased that if she couldn't see the mess she made of my hair I didn't even want to have her try to fix it. The cut was just ok. I had my hair cut by Saiko and it was great. I got exactly what I wanted. I've tried other salons around but didn't love what they did, which is why I tried Beauty Bar by Saiko. I will return for my haircuts. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because she was running very late and there was no tip function on credit/debit machine. read more
