I come to Michael Christopher Salon to get my nails done by Jesse, and I wouldn't go anywhere else in the area for nails! Jesse is very knowledgeable about nails and caring for them, and he always takes his time doing mine. I always feel great when leaving after a manicure/pedicure! Jesse is the only nail artist at the salon, so make sure you call about a week in advance to book. read more

Step though the doors and you're transported back to the mid 1990s and all the campy style and class a hair salon can muster.... you know, for the 1990s. The customer, eh, I mean "client" walks though gigantic draped blood red curtains onto a plush red runner rug, the very best Kohl's has to offer. A gaggle of 'staff' waits at the counter just to the left, all of them in a variety of black-and-white outfits... So salon chic, no? A large red chandelier hovers above for more flair of the camptastic dramatic. THIS my friends is no ordinary salon.. No, it is... MICHAEL CHRISTOPHER... the monogram and name plastering everything tells you so. And judging from the clientele on my initial visit, it serves as the local cougar den for all the highbrow Wilmington cougars. Yes, someone put a lot of money into this place sometime in the 90s. It's nice, but a bit over the top. It's obvious to the first time client that the owner's effort was/is to make it a chic, glamorous salon for all the local high class glitterotti who see themselves as, well, the local high class glitterotti. *eye roll* The lobby area is a mix of stainless cabinets and counters holding the treasures of a convenience store 'espresso' machine (Hit the green button for a "latte") and the not-so glam-glam styrophome cups which somehow escapes being emblazoned with the Michael Christopher monogram. The lobby is cluttered with display cases holding dozens of purses and bags and dangley jewelry, the type you might find in one of those QVC catalogues. These are point-of-sale items for the cougar clientele, and I bet they gobble them up with wreckless abandon. Lots of stainless beaded canopies above the work stations and more heavy curtains dramatically draped to the sides of certain rooms. While the staff seem to take themselves quite seriously, they're friendly. I wanted a little something different for a hair cut, but walked away with identical hair to what I would get from a Super Cuts. Not a bad cut, but I was hoping the $40 investment would yield a little style, considering I'd talked to the stylist for 5 minutes before he cut my hair. And especially considering the stylist seemed to have endless questions about who I was, where I was from, do I go out, etc. etc. etc. Yes yes, I'm adorable and you think I'm single, gay and available.. but please, cut my hair sexy, that's all I want. It was a haircut, that's it. I can't say they did it badly, they just didn't do a $30-$40 job. Then again, I'm no cougar and maybe that's what you get for stumbling carelessly into their den. ;-) read more

First off, I had been going there for more than a decade and I would rate that time 5 stars, then, I tried someone else just for the change and not because of anything negative. They encouraged trying different Artists. I started with Sal who is amazing. Once they moved to a new location, that's when the drama started. I got dragged into salon drama, bad color and extensions and before I knew it, I was banned from the salon! The receptionist wouldn't even let me talk to Michael! When I later tried to call to speak with him about my concerns, I was told he was busy, like forever!? Needless to say, they were very unprofessional, used me to ruin another artist and then kicked me out! They photographed my knotted hair, but then before I knew it had used me for their shop drama. I was in complete shock! I had NEVER had a bad experience while seeing Sal! When you go there for a long time you become part of the "family " and somehow they think it's ok to cross the professional boundaries! And for this I say to you, if you don't mind drama, go for it. No one ever reached out because they had my phone number on caller ID, so I was never permitted to take it further. NOT RECOMMENDED! read more

5/2014 - First time there, won't go back. The whole experience felt rushed. The way my hair was styled was cute, but when I washed it and gave it a comb there were obvious missed spots that I had to trim up. I got a groupon deal for $35 and could do better for less. the glam was a bit much for me, but to each his own. ****Update 8/2014 - When it came to the salon's attention that I had a less than stellar experience, they reached out and offered to make it right. I no longer live in Delaware but had a wedding in town - I desperately needed my hair done for the wedding and went to Michael Christopher's based on a friends recommendation. They were very accommodating to fit me in given my short notice. I am VERY picky about my hair and brought my 24 inch Bellami clip in extensions in. Shawn listened to exactly what I wanted and worked with me to get it exactly right. He put in my extensions and cut them beautifully. He really took the time to make sure they were completely blended. I absolutely loved my hair and got so many compliments at the wedding !!! I am considering driving up from DC just to go to Shawn for tape in extensions ! My regular stylist was out due to a bout of asthma. I was scheduled to see Nicole at 5:30; a half hour after I was able to leave work. I got a call from the receptionist the same day as my appointment telling me to be there by 4:30. I said my appointment is at 5:30 and I can't leave work early,,. Is there a reason I can't be seen at the time I scheduled? Yes, said the receptionist... Nicole wants to leave an hour early. So you're telling me it's more important that Nicole gets to leave an hour early rather than to keep a commitment to a scheduled appointment? Yes, said the receptionist. Dropped $200 for 2 people. Person #1 got a 1980's plain Jane blah hair cut that is chopped on one side. You have to ask Sal to use the curling iron to try & make it look better. Then you will get a few uneven, random curls. Then he sends you off saying "now you can go play with it". Person #2 got a touch up foil color and it took the stylist 3 times to get the color to match (took over 2 hours). We picked her because on their website it states she specializes in color. Everyone was overly nice but that's not what I'm paying for. read more

I have gone to MC several times now. The first time I went was from a mani /pedi with Jesse and it was fantastic. I would give him 6 stars if it was possible. He recommended a stylist Dawn (and gave my a coupon), and she was great. However, she has since left. I decided to go back for a haircut and asked for the receptionist's recommendation on a stylist. I went to Kim and have had 2 cuts with her. She was okay, but certainly not worth the price. I found the service very overpriced for the quality. The ambiance is also very bizarre. I find it hard to feel comfortable, like everyone is judging you if you aren't dressed like you are headed to the club. Not for me. read more

My first time at Michael Christopher yesterday. I will be back!!!! I got my hair washed & deep conditioned followed by a cut and blow dry. Rian was amazing and made sure I got exactly what I wanted. After travelling to Palm Beach for years to get my hait cut and colored, what a treat is was to realize I had the best of both worlds right in my backyard! Who needs to go to NYC when Michael Hemphill (AKA Michael Christopher is right here in Wilmington. If I had any questions about my change of venue, they were answered when the compliments on my new cut and color kept coming. After 2 years, I still look forward to my "Michael cut". An added plus is the way he treats his clients. You feel more like a friend than a client. The Michael Christoper products are to die for. I use the "Lift", the color anti-fading shampoo, and others that I can't recall the names of. If there is ever a problem, they will do whatever it takes to correct it. My boyfriend and I came here to see Alicia and Ashley this past weekend, and we both left very happy with our cuts! Me who never seems to get much done with my fine limp dull hair got a trim to keep it healthy. it came out perfect. she clipped off the dead ratty parts and still managed to keep plenty of length and gave me some cute long side bangs. and my boyfriend actually got a style! this is rare. hes a military guy who is used to just buzzing it off all one length. i convinced him to try it out and he Loves it! Ashley made the sides short and the top with some length that he can style. she even did a quick line up of his facial hair! we will definitely be coming back to see these ladies, in fact i made an appointment to get my hair colored this weekend with Alicia! I will say the front desk staff is pretty off putting, abrupt, and not the most ehh.. "warm" from the time she answered the phone to set our appointments i could tell what type of person i was dealing with. even in greeting and check out she was rather cold. I dont know what all the reviews about the decor are so awful... it didnt seem that bad to me. everything seemed clean and orderly. slightly dated, but who cares what the joint looks like if i walk out with a nice cut. I received a gift certificate for services at Michael Christopher's Salon 2 years ago where I was introduced to my stylist Megan. Megan is sure to please with her knowledge of color, hair care and style. She has never steered me wrong when I have questions. I continue to go back to her time andP time again. Before meeting Megan, I found it difficult to find someone who could style my hair to meet my interest. I'm so excited I've found Megan! I've been going here for years, but have had so few good experiences here. Once one of the stylists cut her finger in my hair and proceeded to curse loudly for a few minutes. Another time I walked out with a COMPLETELY uneven cut that many people commented on the following day. My last time there, I asked for a specific job and provided pictures of what I wanted. It came out looking like a terrible job my cousin did on my hair a few years prior. I decided to do a dye job on myself recently, and everyone has been telling me how natural it looks-a compliment I never received with Michael Christopher. This place is way over priced for the lack of smiles and ability. read more

I couldn't decide between a 3 & 4 star rating on this. They do excellent work, but the pricing is quite high between $50 - $100 for a haircut. Convenient location, well-established salon with many, many services. It has won "Best of Delaware" for several years. read more

After moving to the region it took me a year to find a place that could get color and cut right for me. MC is artsy and eclectic (which I like) and maintains a professional atmosphere ( I like that too). Kim, my stylist, is knowledgeable, personable and experienced. Salon prices are high all over and it stinks to pay large amounts for poor to mediocre work. I live 30 minutes away and it is well worth the gas, time & effort to get to the salon. The only thing that I do not care for is the huge fish aquarium movie that they run in the coloring room. Fish gross me out & I do not find them relaxing. Otherwise, I have been twice so far and will keep going back. read more

At first, I was a little hesitant to come here since the website seems so fancy-shmancy, but I was completely reassured by the staff when I entered the building. They're friendly and welcoming, and I really felt like I was getting the 5 star treatment the entire time I was there. My stylist, Dahmeka, was an absolute sweetheart (not to mention excellent at what she does). No exaggeration: I left with the best haircut I've had in 10 years, and it felt GREAT. I was pleased for what I paid via the Groupon. It included a haircut, but I really didn't want a cut, just a trim, as well as conditioning and blow dry. The conditioning was ok, but it seems it only sticks around until the next shampoo and I'm not sure if that is what a "deep conditioning" is all about. My stylist was nice, young woman, sedate and not terribly upbeat, but that may be better than the overly perky alternative. No one offered coffee, but were happy to get a cup for me because I was dying for a cup and it was really good. Now, I'm no salon junkie, and rarely even go to one (I self-serve mostly and do just fine) but back in the day, no one would dream of the stylist at the next station asking "are you using this?" (hairbrush) and then grabbing it and going to town on her own client with the same brush just used on me. Guessing the days of Barbicide are no more. I'd think a salon of this caliber would be able to supply each stylist with their own stock of brushes and combs. The salon moved over to the old MBNA business park and I thought it was a lovely environment. I would go back, I guess, but not at full price. The girl at the front desk was very nice, friendly and attentive. That speaks volumes for a first impression! A busy salon, seemingly doing well and I'm happy for them! read more

Horrible experience. Very upset. I've been going for over 5 years. This last visit is the last straw. I finally convinced my husband to go to get his hair colored several months ago. The first time the color came out great. The 2nd time it was complete the wrong color. They did a horrible job. They knew he wasn't happy with the color and did nothing to fix it. I nor my husband will ever go back. If anyone ask me about this salon I will make sure they do not go. read more

4th visit with 4th different stylist. This time with a senior stylist. Yes, I'll pay $60/haircut if it's worth it. Yet again, I shouldn't of come back. Yet again, they butchered my hair and left a hole in my head getting razor happy. Yet again, unfriendly staff. My stylist didn't even say goodbye. I just got up from the chair and walked myself out...this is NOT a quality salon. The staff simply always fall short of professionalism in every capacity. There won't be a 5th visit. The client need to be satisfied and expect the quality for the price that is paid. It doesn't matter who is the customer,she or he should receive a good service and treated equally. I went to Jesse to get a "spa manicure and pedicure." There was NOTHING spa like about this manicure and pedicure. Jesse was pleasant and he did a good job on the actual application of the polish. However, there was NO massage at all - not even any lotion applied. The manicure was strictly file and polish. The pedicure did have an exfoliate step, but still no lotion or massage. What kind of manicure and pedicure don't include lotion? Certainly NOT a spa experience at all. I won't be going back. read more

A couple of people recommended this place and I thought I would give it a try. Step in 10 minutes prior to appointment and was asked to take a seat in the cheesy waiting room that really was no more upscale then the local haircuttery just with more items for sale. After watching multiple staff walk in and out to gossip with the front desk for about 15 minutes, owner came out. Instead of greeting the customers anxiously waiting in his salon he too took time to chat with the girls up front. After he learned his client had cancelled he simply huffed back again never even acknowledging all the people waiting. After about 20 minutes past my appointment time a shampoo girl came to get me. She brought back to meet my stylist and hung around right next to the chair chatting with some more staff that were milling around. in the mirror I could see yet another stylist playing on his phone. Definitely made me wonder why I should need to wait since no one seemed at all busy. Well the stylist finally came out smelling of smoke clearly just returning from a break, when I realize this was one of the women that 15 minutes earlier was simply hanging out at the front desk. A this point I thought TABITHA it is time for a "take-over". Clearly customers were not the priority in this salon. So the cut was okay, nothing special but the experience was no worth coming back for. read more

Totally agree with the other review...... my experience was less than what one would expect from a "world class salon"...... The front desk staff are rude, and act like total snobs.....and if you look at the bio's of the "stylists" there, NONE of them have attended cosmetology school.... they all graduated from the school of Michael Christopher. This concerned me because the person cutting my hair told me they don't even have teachers/instructors who work there to provide continuing education!!! So I guess if you work there, you can get your hair dressing license just by showing up to work! the lack of professionalism is so apparent, I mean, the shampoo techs look like they just attended the YOGA class upstairs and came back down to work! (I.E.- Hair in a pile on top of their heads, yoga pants, no make up....). The conversation between the "stylists" was appalling, and their lack of professionalism makes me wonder why people even return! read more
