I came in teary-eyed from a terrible hair experience at another salon (short story is I asked for my cafe lait highlights to be updated and she dyed by entire head copper instead. I looked like a tabby cat crawled up and took a nap on my head.) I was leaving for a work trip and STAFF PHOTOS in two days and devastated. I called at 9:20am on a Saturday and the person who answered listened to my story, asked great questions, and then said if I could come ASAP that they'd do a consultation and try to help. When I arrived I was greeted by that same calming voice and it turned out to be the owner, Umar! Here's why 5 stars: -He was professional, inquisitive, empathetic, and focused on problem solving from the jump. - He asked great questions to get to know me, my hair, and my desired look. - He explained everything he was doing along the way; broke it down into lay woman's terms. - He dedicated the entire day, literally like 6 hours, to correcting and caring for my badly damaged hair. - The results were the absolute best case scenario, all things considered (mainly that aforementioned tabby cat situation). - The color is growing on me still (wasn't looking for a whole new do so it takes getting used to), but the overall health and cut of my hair is amazing! Cons: -If you park illegally in that n'hood you will get towed. I believe him now that every hair disaster is not necessarily a bad thing-- I've found my new cut/color/style shop! I spent over a thousand dollars in cash, well the first 150 I paid from my card. This man says he has 22 years experience with hair when he is barely 22 years old. He was supposed to be a expert but did not but damage my hair even more by using force on my dry hair, cutting it when it was tangled and matted and he dint even know what he was cutting. This is hard for me. I am disabled and have high anxiety, PTSD and chronic depression. I only leave my house to go to MD Anderson and I finally built up the courage to go here and spend $1150 and walk away with my hair still knotted, tangled and a mess. I am embarrassed that I let him do my hair so bad. He doesn't have a salon, he rents a room. He had other customers come in the day and a half I was there and push me to the side. Im extremely disappointed! You couldn't pay me to go back there! No amount of money would be worth it. As you know out hair is very important to us, I have to try to make it presentable, well my husband does just to go to the doctor. UMAR TELL THIS PEOPLE THE TRUTH, they have a right to know. He would even give me a receipt, and I asked 3 times. He was saying I could have it but never giving it to me. My husband had enough because we were paying $125 and hour and after a day and a half it was still a mess. I could even run a brush through my hair. Umar is not only extremely experienced, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic but he truly goes the extra mile to protect my hair. He is not just great at what he does but is genuinely thoughtful and considerate. He doesn't whip through a haircut or a treatment but will take that extra time and effort to make adjustments based on your needs. He is absolutely fantastic and saved my hair from total ruin. I've been going to Umar for probably eight years now. He first did my hair when he was at Thairapy, and when I heard he had started his own salon, I followed him there. I've always enjoyed going to Umar for my hair because he loves to take style risks and be adventurous. I can come in with a really vague idea--or no ideas--and he will figure out a style that gets what I'm going for. He styled my hair and makeup for my wedding, and I was very happy with both. I've tried some of his cosmetics line as well--I like the foundation and "blue oil" in particular. Umar always makes interesting conversation while he takes care of you, but isn't over the top. Prices are reasonable and he often has specials. I always recommend Umar to my friends, especially if they are in a slump. He will get you to try something new that still feels natural. read more

Umar has been doing my hair for about 3 years. I cannot imagine going to anyone else. I starting using his services when my old stylist moved, he had the station next door. I have since followed him to his new salon. Yes of course he does hair well. What sets Umar apart is his vision and his ability to articulate what he sees and wants to do to your hair. It makes you realize that your stylist really is an artist. Shape, symmetry, etc., Umar articulate what would work well for you and follow through. Second most important is the experience. Years ago in 2007 I moved to Houston and selected a hair salon off of Yelp. I was lucky that my first appointment was with Umar because he handled my baby fine, thin, and shoulder length hair with amazing skill. (Many before him screwed up my cut) I also like to be adventurous with color. Umar loves the color challenge and it is always a work of art. I was so impressed I have kept going to back to Umar as well as followed him to his new location. Several of my friends now also go to Umar and I look forward to my beauty days. Umar is an awesome stylist. My hair color is rich and lustrous. Previously, I had a keratin treatment and my hair was so manageable and soft and easy to care for. I did everything Umar instructed for the first 72 hours, and my hair looked beautiful for over a week. I highly recommend his service. I went here with a Groupon for the Keratin Treatment. Heather was my stylist. I was impressed as soon as I walked in with the adorable salon - especially since the shopping center it's in is not the nicest. I also really appreciated that they had late appointments. They took me at 6 p.m. for a keratin treatment (that can take around 2 hours!). I work full time so it's really nice when places are open after normal business hours. Heather started on me on time and was SO knowledgeable about hair. I told her I had issues with my hair breaking all the time and she continued to give me really great tips on how to strengthen my hair. After she applied the keratin she noticed that my ends were in rough shape still so she offered to trim and charged me $35 extra for that. I'm not sure how much she is normally but $35 definitely isn't bad and, honestly, it was just a nice convenience to get everything done at once. Heather also gave me a free sample of some keratin shampoo and conditioner to try with my hair. I left the salon at 7:45 PM - 1 hour and 45 minutes for keratin and a trim! While talking to Heather I learned she was trained at the Paul Mitchell School in Dallas, which is a great program and she's a great example of that! Depending on how much the hair cuts are I will absolutely consider going back. read more

For those of you who love keratin treatments and are constantly turning to groupon for a good deal, you probably are well aware that a lot of the salons who use groupon really just go through the motions and will do whatever they can to get you out of their chair as quickly as possible. I am almost always skeptical going into a salon that uses groupon because I have had horrible experiences with them in the past. As soon as I went in to Umar's salon, my worries were put to rest. He asked me a lot of questions about what I've been doing to my hair and I could tell he really wanted to take the time to understand my hair. I have very thick, curly hair that has gone through everything imaginable throughout the years and a lot of stylists do not have the patience or understanding of what it needs. Umar gave me a lot of great suggestions for products and styling and was very attentive during the process which, of course, takes a very long time. The keratin has been the best I've had so far and I've been getting keratins religiously for four years. He is the only stylist to actually help me with the texture of my hair being too curly at the root and too straight at the bottom and actually fixed it! And if all of this gloriousness wasn't enough, Umar is a fantastic conversationalist. I like that his salon is structured in a way that he cannot take much more than one client at a time. It gives him the leeway to really get to know you and your hair. When I asked him to do my hair for prom, he was sadly unavailable, but he gave me the number of an amazing stylist who is another rave review altogether! I walked out of his salon feeling great about my hair, and I'm the type of person who's always worried about her hair.
