I definitely recommend trimming your hair as your ends do become dry after a couple months. Letting my hair air dry was the best result for me. At times when I slept with wet hair my ends were kinda crazy. I would straighten it back to normal. I wanted to go for a short look this year. My hair was down my back before I redid my treatment. I've had Japanese thermal straightening done at four different locations around the world by five different stylists. (One salon had their expert retire, so I saw a new stylist there.) I've seen the good/bad/ugly over the last 10 years. I've heard people claim to be experts. I've been charged over $1k almost every time, except here. My results have varied from stylist to stylist. I've been over-processed and under-processed. I'm a skeptic and with super long and curly hair, I usually walk in assuming the worst about a salon. This salon and the owners are THE most consistent in terms of results that I've experienced in the last decade. I've had my hair straightened here four times over the last two years. I'm going to state the obvious only because reading the other reviews makes me shake me head... When my hair has been in excellent condition and I get my hair straightened, the results have been amazing. When my hair isn't in exceptional shape walking in, my hair isn't magically cured of my neglect. (Derp, people.) Seriously, for anyone walking in with hair that has been processed through some other procedure or colored (or whatever), do some research and know the risks. It's probably not going to go well. These guys are SO consistent in processing my hair that I would gladly fly back from a new location if I moved just because I know that if I do MY part maintaining my hair in healthy condition, they'll do THEIR part and make it straight. Don't walk in there with damaged hair and expect them to bring it back from the great beyond. They're pretty darned good at straightening. That being said, straightening is their gift :) not hair cuts. Get your hair straightened here and then get it cut elsewhere. But definitely get it straightened here. read more

I had a Japanese Straightening Perm done here Monday, December 28, 2020. When I arrived, there was one client having the same procedure done. Both Patrick and Joyce worked on my hair; Patrick did the right side, and Joyce the left. It looked great when they were finished. I paid a total of $333. The next day, I noticed the hair on the right side of my head was slightly different than the previous day: coarseness, stiffness, areas that lost their needle straight appearance, and some bent areas. It is visible starting at the scalp of my hairline (right side). Later that day, I visited the salon and brought these new developments to Joyce's attention. After she acknowledged the difference, she advised me to wait the standard three days to wash my hair, and to use a lot of conditioner. She asked that I come back in a week, assuring me that the procedure was guaranteed and if I was dissatisfied they would fix it. I did. Today, I went back. The difference between the two sides is now *much* more noticeable. There is an added development: the hair on the right side of my head is now "poofy" and frizzy. People who have no training and don't really care about hair were able to notice it. Upon my entering the salon, Joyce was attending the one client there. Patrick greeted me and I gave him the update, after which he asked that I sit in a chair so he could take a look at my hair. He proceeded to tell me the following: 1) It looks the same; there is no difference. I pointed out the coarseness and areas where the hair was obviously bent and not straight. 2) He told me it was because the product was placed an inch away from the scalp, and if he placed it any closer, it would burn my scalp. Since it was placed an inch away, the hair appeared "bent." I then pointed out that the bent hair was 3 inches away from my scalp. 3) After acknowledging the difference, he informed me it was because the hair on each side grows in different directions. I informed him I had the procedure done before. He asked when, and I said 10 years ago. He began to laugh and said my hair has since changed and that I shouldn't expect the same results. I informed him that the left side looks the same as it did 10 years ago when I had the procedure done. 4) He then went on to say that it is because the hair on my left side is different from the one on my right. Yes, he really did say that. And he offered to sell me a conditioner that would help with the problem. Yes, he really did do that. I finally asked if he was going to fix it. He said he couldn't because my hair is already straight. At this point I informed him I was very dissatisfied, after which he replied he was sorry I was dissatisfied. Joyce also said she was sorry I was dissatisfied (she was present the whole time, and we had made eye contact several times via the mirror during the conversation). Too bad. Many of my coworkers loved my hair when I first had it done and wanted to know who did it. I told them it was a salon in the Sharpstown area, but would hold off on recommending the place until after I'd washed it. I'll tell them, if they still want to know. Needless to say, I cannot recommend Beauty Choice Salon. The reason I chose this salon was because of the claim that they specialize in Japanese Straightening Perms and have done so for more than a decade (16 years). Judging by the results, I would say they have maybe a year's experience repeated 16 times. Please pay attention to the reviews for this establishment. If you still want to roll the dice, that is your choice. read more

Being a business owner myself, I would hate for someone to give me a bad review. I was referred to this salon by one of my clients and I did have bleach and colored hair and when I called the salon, I was very upfront with that condition of my hair. Joyce told me that it will fix my hair. I made an appointment and went in. Both Patrick and Joyce are very nice and sweet. When I was done with the Japanese hair straightening, I could see my hair breaking off. Patrick was trying to hide the fact that my hair was breaking off. My hair felt 3000 times worse after going to this salon. I told them how I felt and he kept blaming it on my hair. They aren't supposed to do this chemical treatment on bleached hair like mine, and Joyce was very dishonest with me from the beginning. Please don't go here as all they want is your money. My hair is breaking off and is fried, the entire hair shaft. The only option I have is to shave my head!! read more

My hair looks perfectly straight and shiny everyday now. Got the Japanese straight perm in May. I haven't used my straightener since! I only blow dry if I don't want to leave the house with wet hair. I did have to get my ends trimmed after treatment, but I fully expected to need that, and they told me before the treatment my ends were bad and I would need a trim once my hair settled in two weeks. I'd have to completely agree with Christina N. about how the owner blames you, makes you look like the liar , overcharges you even though they tell you a certain price and then never offers a discount or anything like they promise. I went to Beauty Choice Salon 2 or 3 years ago to get my hair digitally permed while my aunt got her hair straightened via the Japanese Hair Straightening system. All was fine and well when they gave us the perms the entire time letting us know how to care for our hairs, what to do and what not to do. I have to admit, the people do a great job when it comes to perming, however.. When I specifically asked them SEVERAL times when I can wash my hair out and if I could tie my hair up because I was heading to Galveston later that night. The woman, Joyce, who does most of the leg work, the husband Patrick just sort of shadows her and does all the extra work she barks at him to do, kept insisting that the digital perm wasn't like a normal perm, it was fine to wash out in a day and tieing up my hair would not be a problem. WHAT A LIE! I went to the salon on a Friday early afternoon and was done bye about 5pm that evening, Sunday morning when I went to wash out my hair a FULL TWO DAYS after my hair went completely straight save for a few strands. When I called them Monday morning to talk about it, they told me to come into the shop and they would take care of it. When I got to the shop, almost immediately I was bombarded by the husband and wife duo saying it was my fault my curls fell out, that I shouldn't have washed it out, that they wouldn't fix it for me. I was shocked, I was willing to pay them for it but when they attacked me like they did I got mad. So here we were yelling back and forth when the husband got fed up with it and called the police! I was laughing hysterically at the fact that he called the police for soemthing as dumb and trivial as this. Needless to say, the office did nothing about it because there was nothing he could do, however he did ask me to leave before the owners tried to press charges on me for "trespassing" even though they told me I could come back. I have never come back to these people, however I do frequent the Teahouse next door and surprisingly, they are still in business. From what I understand, they treat their "American" customers with a lot more respect then they do the Asian community and their "American" customers are willing to pay anything. I would never come back to them and don't ever recommend anyone go there, in fact I trash the place as often as I can when people ask me my opinion about them. read more

In Chinatown there is a plethora of salons to choose from. Finding the right one is always a challenge since so many of them offer a lot of the same services. Went here to get a digital perm. Absolutely LOVED IT. They're known for specializing in JAPANESE STRAIGHT PERMS. The staff consists of a married couple (Joyce and Patrick) and their 2 kids who help out with hair washing and such.. it's pretty cute actually. The place is clean and spacious. Even better, they have flat panel tvs with DVD players located near every station so that you can watch a movie of your choice from their modest, yet somewhat updated movie collection.. this is especially great if you're getting a perm that takes 3-4 hours. My digital perm costs me about $130, lasted for about 5-6 months! Not sure on the pricing of straight perms. Oh yeah, and everyone here speaks English! read more

This is the second time they have given me the Japanese Straightening treatment. I have a mixture of fine, kinky and curly hair. They do their best for their customers. When I first came in I had a bunch of relaxers done to my hair, and they cleaned me up and helped me get the Japanese straightening. I waited about a year before getting my touch up, and this time it came out amazing. I don't trust anyone to do my Japanese straightening but them! It's a family owned business, and they take care of you during the long process (giving you something to eat and drink, even conversation.) Just wanted to pass along that this place is great! I've had Japanese straighteners for over 10 years. I have ringlet curly hair and get tired of flat ironing it all the time and frying the ends in the process. Some people don't really take their time so you don't get the entire benefit of the chemicals but Joyce did an awesome job. I was going to another salon to get this done before and decided to get it done again at the last minute before a vacation. My previous salon was closed. They had an appointment available. I was a little hesitant since I had just had my hair highlighted a couple of weeks earlier. Joyce asked all the right questions and put an extra layer of protection on my hair before beginning. She was even kind enough to provide a phone charger. I will definitely be back because it turned out awesome! read more

I have to say that the staff is amazing they are all very sweet and go out of their way to keep you comfortable but I was not impressed with the Japanese perm I got from them. There are sections of my head where my hair feels very rough, course and stringy. I'm not sure if it was the process or the product they used that left my hair this way. I've had the perm done several times before at another salon and I never had this problem. Now I'm waiting for hair to grow out a little more to go and have it redone elsewhere. Japanese Straightening CHANGED MY LIFE. If your hair is thick, curly and unruly - you would understand. Well, my hair USED to be curly but it required TONS of product and styling to look presentable. I got lots of compliments on my curly hair but it took WORK. Anyway, I finished my first 2 years of college and landed a decent paying job through my internship and I can no longer afford to spend 45 mins plus on my hair every morning. I wanted a more sleek professional look and opted to get the Brazilian Blowout recommended to me by a friend. Talk about WORST $250 ever spent! My hair STILL took forever to dry, still took 45 minutes to straighten and it wasn't curly, straight or wavy. Just untamed frizz with odd waves in the most unattractive places. I heard about the Japanese straightening before but I was afraid to do it because I heard it was very damaging to the hair (the reason I went with the Brazilian in the first place) but after battling with my hair for months I said: Eff it, why not? Might as well get all the damage done at once instead of applying 450 degree heat to my hair on daily basis (its the only setting that worked on my hair) and I have never been happier. I had some damage on my ends (mostly from the straightening) which I had trimmed and the liscio conditioner sample Patrick provided worked wonders. I now wake up with frizz free straight hair (no heat applied) and get to sleep in an extra hour. I've never had a digital perm or a haircut here, but I have done the Japanese Straightening twice. They are significantly less in price than other places that do the same process - I pay $200-300. Quick description of what Japanese Straightening is (in my terms): a chemical process to completely straighten your hair without frizz. After a shower, your hair dries to the same condition - straight with no need for styling. I do have to note that after each occurrence, my ends have been chemically fried, so the dead ends have to be trimmed. I also have to say, the second time I did it, my hair did end up being frizzy cause you aren't supposed to wet your hair until 1-2 days after, and I ended up doing a run race the next morning where sweat affected the outcome. Totally my fault. I've never had issues with my hair being the wrong texture though, but maybe my hair is more fit since it's super thick and "weave-like". The owners have generally been nice, except the time where I came in late for my appointment and they felt rushed (and had a semi-sour attitude to match). However, I'm in the mindset that the price and results of japanese straightening outweighs that one negative instance about the place. read more

Patrick and Joyce do everything they can to make you feel comfortable and are great conversationalist. My Japanese Hair Straightening came out incredible! I can wash and go and not one curl! I previously had it done somewhere else but they didn't do it right and I still had to straighten it when I got out of the shower. With Patrick and Joyce straightening my hair, I wash and go. I came to this place asking about the Japanese straightening they "took a look of my hair" and told me that I was fine they did the treatment and since the lady was done ( plus like the way she was busy taking care of my clients) I didn't like my hair I didn't look lIke a healthy straight hair I told her and the answEr she gave me was no all the hair are the same! It has been 2 months since I had Japanese hair straightening done here, and my hair is still much straighter than before, and very healthy looking. I've been trying to find a good salon for Japanese hair straightening since my sister had it done in Japan, and it looked amazing. I previously tried the Chi hair straightening at a different salon which did not work for my hair, and was actually much more expensive than this! I decided to try them since Beauty Choice uses actual Japanese straightening product imported from Japan. I'm so happy I did! I have really long, thick wavy/kinky hair (I'm part black), so the process took 6 hours. Patrick and Joyce were very attentive and are good conversationalists, so it didn't seem so long. This is an update to my Japanese straightening experience with this salon. Again, they over processed my hair and offered NO HELP and NO RECOURSE, NO REFUND!!! It has been over 6 months and I had to cut my hair to cut away the dry brittle and bad parts that they ruined. Costs me an unbelievable amount of money to fix their mistake. Please head the warning, those of you with good experiences maybe because they didn't leave the product on long. My hair is now shoulder length and starting to feel a bit better, anyone with already shoulder length hair and above would have or will be in even more trouble than myself. HEAD the warning, STAY AWAY from this place, they should CLOSE THIS PLACE DOWN!!!! My experience was traumatic and costly. I cried many nights over my ruined hair. I'm writing this review on behalf of my boyfriend's mom. We made an appointment at Beauty Choice for a digital perm, and was told to come at 4:00pm (the shop closes at 7). We walked in, and noticed two girls walking out with super pretty digital perms they had just gotten done. My boyfriend's mom pointed to those girl's hair, and said "I want it just like that" -- full-bodied curls. After looking through some hair style books and choosing a style with full and large curls, Patrick began the long process for the digital perm. After washing her hair, we overheard one of the shop owner's children saying to Patrick, "we don't have anymore big rollers." Though it raised a flag for us, we still continued because we thought we could put our trust in a knowledgeable hair stylist. BIG MISTAKE. Patrick used the smaller rollers because the large rollers had not been washed after its previous use. Her hair came out with small, tight and frizzy curls much like a regular perm you could get in any salon. Patrick did not apologize, instead he kept trying to defend himself and claimed that her hair was thin so he was afraid the curl would not stay. That makes no sense! Thin hair should hold the curl better. He offered no discount, and did not offer to re-do it. Word to the wise: Make sure you're knowledgeable about the digital perm style you want. You cannot trust the hairstylist like you think you would be able to. Earlier in the week I had called and asked for the price for "digital perm for long hair" and was told $125. I waited to write this review because I know that negative reviews can really hurt a business; however, I do feel that I need to warn others by writing about my experience with the salon. I was initially interested in getting a Japanese Straight Perm so I thought I would feel out the salon but getting my hair color and cut here first. I figured there's not too much to mess up because all I really wanted was a trim (to prep my hair to be straightened) and a retouch of my roots. Long story short, don't have them cut your hair!!! Joyce layered my hair more than necessary and I cannot do anything with it but tie it up into a bun with hair sticking out all over. My hair is totally uneven and in order for it to be evened out my hair would have to be cut above my shoulders (before, my hair was mid/back)! My girlfriends encouraged me send out a "PSA" because they said that they rely on word of mouth or reviews as to whether they should try out a business. And really, if I read about someone having a bad haircut experience here, I would not have gotten my hair cut at Beauty Choice and just stuck to my regular salon. read more

I am shocked this place has such bad Yelp reviews. I can only attest to Japanese permanent straightening service, not perms, but I have only had great experiences here. This salon is known for its Japanese straightening. On a typical Saturday, they have at least 8 clients for this service from all over Houston getting it done. The straightening process takes anywhere from 4-7 hours depending on your hair. But they are willing to get you food, drinks, magazines, anything. My Indian hair is very curly and has frizz in it, so I have been straightening my hair for a while now because it is so convenient to style. In fact, I have been coming to Beauty Choice for 8 years now. I live in Los Angeles now, and I still wait until I am home in Houston to get my hair done by Patrick. This is partially because it is so cheap here! Min price= $160 Once it touches shoulder= $180 Add $20 for every 2 inches past shoulder There is an additional charge for extremely curly or thick hair. The family/couple that owns the salon is very friendly and will go out of their way for their clients. Patrick is the best- he is very meticulous with the chemicals and straightening process. They will take extra time if needed, or even stay until after the salon closes to make sure your hair turns out right. read more

So this is just an update from my last review. It's been about two years since I got my hair straightened by these people. My hair is shoulder length, STILL breaking, and I look like I'm balding around my hair line, STILL. I'm just gonna go head and say it's permanent hair loss. I use to have a widows peak that just doesn't even exist anymore. It will cost me THOUSANDS to try and get my hair back. I left this place with melted barbie hair, and now I look like I'm balding. Someone needs to shut these people down. I don't care how nice you are. You are clearly not to be trusted with harsh chemicals. Even the girls posting pictures of their hair with "good" reviews, you're hair looks FRIED. I hope someone files a lawsuit and shuts them down! read more

These people are miracle workers! I have gotten the japanese straightening done by them 3 times. Their price is hands down the cheapest, without sacrificing quality. My hair is pin straight each time (just be sure to follow their restrictions for the first 2 weeks. Effortless styling afterwards. The only thing is that they tell you that if you go for your touch up, only your grown out hair will need to be straightened and the rest gets a protective coating. However, you'll still need to pay as if it was all getting done again. I didn't know this the first time I touched up. Even then, I'd still do it over again. Can't wait until I'm in Houston again! Now that I have moved back to California and gotten this process done at a salon in Southern California, I really really appreciate the work that Patrick and his wife do. The other salon did not do the same quality work. My roots were left wavy and this NEVER happened here. My hair was always stick straight from root to tip. Their kids help out with shampoo and blow drying, and they offer you drinks, snacks, and magazines. I had a good experience here and that is why I would recommend it to others. I paid $280 and it was well worth it all 3 times. So sad that I moved out of state but if I'm ever back I will definitely book with them again. read more

I just had my hair straightened last Wednesday, and realized while talking to Joyce that it has been TEN years since I began going to them, and couldn't believe how fast time had flown by since I had discovered them. When I had first discovered them circa de 2002, when I was a sophomore in college and there was no yelp in those days, I had written rave reviews about Patrick & Joyce on numerous hair forums, but now that I'm sure my reviews are probably dusting away on the internet somewhere, I might as well give an update to my history with Liscio, Beauty Choice, and Patrick & Joyce. Short version: I have done the Japanese hair straightening almost 15 times by now, and I absolutely love it. I have occasionally deterred during the years by trying different things such as keratin, even a different place that does Japanese hair straightening, but I realized that my hair just responded best to the Liscio & Joyce knew my hair the best. Nothing made my hair more manageable, less maintenance, and soft, straight, and healthy. Also, their price has stayed the lowest amongst other places who offer it. They are also nice, helpful and genuinely good people. Despite moving away from Houston, to Chicago, and now presently NYC, I still go to them every 6months to 1 yr to have my roots done so I can keep my daily hair routine simple to a minimum of finger blowdrying or even air drying. They will do consults for free if you want to just ask them questions. Long Version: When I was in high school, I began the battle against my curly frizzy Indian hair with a round brush and blowdryer. I actually got so good at blowdrying my hair straight that my friends would ask me to do it for them. A few times I tried relaxing my hair at a Caucasian salon in Clear Lake, TX but realized relaxing was a lot of damage for what it was worth. It would only make my blowdrying session a little shorter and make it slightly easier to make it straighter. Then the straightening iron started to become widely available my senior year of high school and I began using that sometimes, but realized that was also very damaging and I could only do that once a week at most to prevent damage. During college, I discovered Japanese hair straightening, and did extensive research about where to have this process done. I called numerous Houston salons, asked questions, price checked everywhere, and finally discovered Joyce who offered it, whom was working at another salon at that time. I had the procedure done, and LOVED it. The pros most definitely outweighed the cons. Yes, your hair does get a little flat, but that mostly is only the first few weeks, and as your hair grows out it gets a little more voluminous. Anyways there are plenty of options to give your roots volume (Big Roots mouse). Anyways, Joyce finally moved to another salon and while there, began the construction for her new salon Beauty Choice (where she is now today). Her husband was to join her in helping her run the place. The new salon was beautiful and they had put a lot of thought into the quality of the materials & design. Patrick & Joyce both do an amazing job on the hair straightening, and they tag team and help each other out, so expect them to work together to do your hair. I love how they are able to fit you in last minute. You can usually get in a day or two before you want to go. The whole process takes about 6 hrs (I have hair almost to the end of my back.) At some point during the years, I had tried another salon in Houston that was a very high end, expensive, snooty salon in the Montrose area just out of curiosity, and my hair turned out so fuzzy and awful. They just did not have the same volume, thus experience with the Japanese hair straightening. Also, I tried keratin at some point too (in NYC), and the results lasted me about 4 weeks, but it was still not straight enough where I could get away with not blowdrying or straightening. And it cost me just as much as Liscio, so realized for me its not worth it. My mom went to get her hair thermally reconditioned/japanese straightened/rebonded and although they seemed to really take their time during the processing, her hair now looks like it has the texture of cotton. Completely fuzzy! I have had my own hair straightened for a fraction of their price in the Philippines using what this salon owner said was "cheap chemicals" and my hair turned out 100X better than what they did to my mom's. Joyce and Patrick (and family) do an exceptional job at Japanese straightening. I have been getting this procedure done for about 10 years and have tried about a dozen different places. Beauty choice uses a top of the line product and does the best job for the best price, and in a reasonable amount of time. I drive from Austin every 8 months to get it done here because I cannot find a place that compares in Austin or San Antonio. There are very specific after-care instructions to follow for about a week after the procedure is done. If you follow the rules, your hair will dry smooth, shiny, and silky on its own until the roots grow out. read more

Not a good one, It is just a week that I got japanese straightening with them and after washing my hair in 4 days i thought my hair would be straight, soft, silky & shiny! Only a part of my hair at the back is straight, and am not at all impressed with the front part of my hair, some part feels like broken. read more

I must admit I have in the past had bad experience with other salons that over price and just fake...like visible changes ...who dont try to even listen u just a number..or at least explain what they going to do...But after looking to get my hair straighten I found.a.forum where someone spoke so highly of the experience at Beauty by Choice...and reasonable price..They will have to see your hair before giving you a price and make sure your hair is healthy before they do anything...which I like that about them...since no one hair is the same . I was advice on the dos and dont as well they even have it on their cards. Even after a year I still had my hair straighten.. and they do have a diverse of clients of many backgrouds that go to have their hair done. For me they deserve a great review. read more

Okay i am doing a really honest review here.I am new to usa and live 50 mins away from the salon.I searched for places in the Woodlands to do japanese hair straightening but none of them did, i finally found one who told nd it was nearly 3 times the price told in this salon.I decided to give it a go to beauty choice even its far and i dont drive so i needed a favour from my hub or i had to uber 60$ to the salon because they were specialists and relatively cheaper .I made an appointment and went early morning, loved loved loved everything the lady worked hard, the only thing was the price estimation i got on phone increased by around 80$ when i actually did it,i dont blame the salon for that, my hair is very very very thick, and i have had this experience before, so i was kind of struggling with the budget so couldnt tip her properly and feel really guilt for that.I am writing this review that i have done hair straightening 5 times in my life i am 26 year old, and coz my hair is dense and thick most of the time it dint stayed at all....this time i am amazed, feels like the first time i got the value i paid for,its gorgeous!! I am going back again and this time definitely tipping the lady what she deserves.Everything about this salon is great, the service, the way she took my care, u can imagine m guilty for not being able to tip enough so she was reallyyy really great !! 7/7/2014 Horrible results! I am shocked they are even supposedly listed on Milbon's website! It is one thing to apply the liscio product evenly whether or not your hair is virgin on top, or damaged /treated which is already wrong to start with.The only question I was asked was whether or not I had colored my hair which was not, but I did mention the other treatments I had below my virgin hair and Patrick said it would be fine. How can you get good results with only 2 people (the 2 kids are only washing/rinsing your hair) helping 4 to 6 or more people at the same time? this is almost fraudulent, you are after all using a system that can have very very damaging effects on the scalp or the hair itself. They left the product too long. The price reflect the service and result: LOW... The virgin hair is fried and part of my hair on top has been cut (?) never have I had this before...I let you imagine the part that had already been treated... I started to get really nervous in the salon fearing the worse and the worse happened after the long 72 hours of wait... But they talk they are very sweet and cash in...no problem... Only one issue puzzle me: After all this years in business, don't you learn anything? where is the honesty behind all this? Joyce finished my hair and I could tell she looked uneasy finishing the top after probably noticing that the top had been fried/cut...she just left the top dry by itself... Seriously, go elsewhere...And read, read the reviews before... If you have perfect hair / virgin, then good luck! For all others do yourself a big favor and avoid this place at all costs...
