Our 6mo rescue pup, Aki, is part Australian cattle dog, part pit bull, and a drizzle of other breeds. When we got her over a month ago, she was a nervous little pup - afraid of cars, streets. and loud noises. I delved into YouTube videos to acclimate her with suburban life. And all of that positive reinforcement worked like a charm; she became a puppy that was happy to take walks around the neighborhood. But this brought along a slew of troublesome behaviors - jumping on people, pulling on the leash, barking, chewing, and digging. The worst was the nipping, especially with the kids. Likely from her cattle dog side, her nipping fortunately didn't break their skin, but it left the kids afraid to be in the same room as Aki. And none of the YouTube videos I watched were helping. The last straw was when our eldest daughter took Aki out for a potty break in the evening. Aki started jumping, nipping, and barking feverishly enough that it scared our daughter to the point of tears. That's when I turned to Bara. Our first interaction was a 30m phone call that ended up being almost an hour. She asked about Aki and our situation, then shared her training style. Her technique is one that blends positive reinforcement with corrective actions that are tailored for each specific dog. Friday morning I decided enough is enough. Georgie would have to go. I had received Georgie exactly 2 months earlier as a foster parent. He had been spared euthanasia by the intervention of a rescue group of ladies from Modesto who looked to get him a new home. Georgie is an exceptional dog. A Lab/Pit mix, he is intense, smart and super athletic. So much fun to hike with in the Palo Alto Foothills! At the dog park he is the heart of the party. Tirelessly running and friendly with every dog. However we ran into a serious problem. Georgie, it turned out, has separation anxiety. He must be near me 24/7. He won't let me be out of sight. Bottom line, I can't leave him home alone for a minute. For two months I didn't swim, bike or do anything with friends. Left alone in a locked crate he'd go wild, bending the metal walls with his teeth and sticking his head in the gaps. Left alone at home out of the crate, he broke several windows in order to escape -- and look for me in the streets of Palo Alto. Animal Control was on my case, as well as neighbors on the block, and I did receive hate letters -- not everybody in Palo Alto likes to see a loose dog walking the street on its own. Then, Friday night, when I told a friend that the next day I was going to give Georgie back to the rescue, my friend told me about a trainer called Bara. He said She does magic with tough dogs. He made the introduction, and Bara called me back Friday 10pm. She wouldn't let the dog be euthanized. Saturday morning we started the work. Bara observed me and Georgie in action. I was referred to Bara by a close friend when we adopted Mac, a 2-month old Great Dane puppy. Mac was an anxious puppy from the very beginning. He was afraid of stepping out for walks, afraid to get in the car, afraid of loud noises, afraid of other dogs etc. And to complicate matters more, this was the first dog that my husband and I got as a couple and although my husband grew up with dogs, Mac was the first pet I had in my life. So we needed some intensive coaching and guidance ourselves :) We started with 1:1 sessions at home. Mac was so anxious that he growled at Bara in his first session. But she did such a masterful job of calming him down and helping him trust her. She also encouraged us to get him on a tight daily routine to help reduce his anxiety. Prior to starting classes with Bara, we were not getting much sleep at night and neither was Mac. Within 2 days of strictly following the routine Bara recommended, Mac started sleeping peacefully through the night, which was such a relief! She helped us understand how to couple positive reinforcement with timely corrective action for certain behaviors (e.g. resource guarding). We also supplemented the 1:1 classes with group classes. In the group classes Bara and Jamin helped us get Mac comfortable around other dogs. As a result he's no longer nervous and doesn't rush to hide behind us when he sees other dogs. We've also been able to make incredible progress on his walks. He started off as a puppy that never wanted to leave the front yard, and would try to sprint back towards the house if you managed to get him a few steps outside the gate. Fast forward to today, and loves to go on long walks and explore new parks. We've also been able to work on his recall skills to the point where it's possible to have him go leash-less in locations/situations where it's safe to do so. Mac completed his Level 1 and Level 2 obedience training with Bee Positive. And we look forward to more lessons where he can get his Good Canine Citizen certificate. I've only had 1 session with Bara so far and it's been so helpful. Of course, all our dog's issues haven't been 100% resolved as that takes time and consistency, but I've already seen major progress. That is what's important. I adopted my Maltipoo a few months ago. He was neglected and spent his whole life in a mechanics garage. Unfortunately he wasn't properly trained and didn't have the opportunity to socialize with people and other dogs besides his siblings. He just turned 1. Moko is particularly triggered by guests coming into our home and he gets very territorial so I wanted to make sure we stopped him from 1) barking at guests and 2) jumping on them. He would be ok after a while but if they ever went to the bathroom, got up, or walked around he would be triggered. Bara showed me the ways to discipline him and show him tough love. That behavior is simply not acceptable and we need to teach our dogs that. I don't expect my dog to be super friendly with guests, but they have to be able to coexist. I used the methods that Bara taught me and when we had a guest over, he growled at him once or twice and then we immediately corrected that and he didn't do it again. Another problem that we're working on next is leash reactivity (a very common problem amongst us doggie owners)! Moko pulls the leash whenever he sees a dog and if he can't greet them, he begins to bark. It's embarrassing when we take him to a cafe or an outdoor restaurant. We've had two sessions with Bara so far and they've been tremendously helpful. We've seen significant progress with our pup in such a short amount of time. For context, we adopted a Maltipoo who has severe reactivity to the point that we couldn't take her out any place where she could be around other dogs, otherwise she'd bark, scream, lunge, etc. I first contacted Bara after reading other reviews on Yelp (folks that seemed to have been helped in similar situations). The first step was an in depth phone call where Bara took the time to fully understand the issue we've been having. Then in our first session she came to our house and fitted our pup with a prong collar. This proved to be a game changer because almost immediately she was less reactive when walking outdoors. In our second session we were taught how to use the ecollar, which again was a game changer as she was able to walk next to another pup (something we thought would be impossible in such a short period). Bara is truly exceptional. At the peak of the pandemic, I surprised my parents with a Maltese puppy after their first one passed away. Their first dog was very mellow and obedient, whereas the new puppy, Pepper, was incredibly loud and aggressive towards anything he saw (people, dogs, TV commercials, basically everything you can imagine). They couldn't take him out in public, he couldn't socialize with other dogs, he couldn't do regular dog things. They tried their best to train him and get him used to the outside world but didn't have any success. For two years my parents struggled with Pepper to the point that he was giving my mom anxiety attacks and that's when I decided to give Bara a call. I honestly was not expecting results since Pepper seemed like a helpless case, and was I wrong. After ONE session, Pepper was a changed dog and we could not be more happy with the results. I have only had the one phone consultation with her, but she was quick to recommend and insist on using punishment training; namely a shock collar. Now I won't say there isn't a place for this type of training, but many sources agree it should be a last resort. We found this wonderful dog trainer (Bara Ward) on Nextdoor a while back and wanted to pass on the success story with our dog Lily (3 year old lab mix) with severe fear issues. She would attempt to run to 'safety' from people walking by, cars driving by, people's voices or children playing down the street. Walks on a leash were impossible. Bara Ward (Bee Positive Dog Training) worked with us to help us get Lily to overcome these fear issues and go on a long driving vacation. We brought home our first puppy, a labradoodle, a year ago. Our puppy aggressively bit and nipped at every member of the family, pulled on the leash, lunged and jumped on people and other dogs, and chewed through leashes, collars, seat belts, pillows, toilet paper, towels, and every dog bed or stuffed animal in a 2 mile radius. He also "re-landscaped" our backyard and could not be in the (fully fenced) yard without a leash. We were at wits end and thought about rehoming him many times. We tried several different group trainers for about 10 months with little to no progress despite consistent attendance and home practice. I called Bee Positive after he got loose twice in one week and ran down the street. Our now 15 month old isn't perfect, but we have our house and our sanity back and he just passed his Canine Good Citizen test! Our pup had some group training at a local place but then quarantine happened and it closed. He started to regress and we saw some behavioral habits forming. He was starting to get nippy and on walks would lunge at runners, bikers, cars.... I actually met Bara while driving around our neighborhood - she was training a neighbors dog. We had a puppy on the way, so I stopped to say hi. The neighbor mentioned she was amazing, and thats all it took for me to sign up. She's been nothing short of life changing, as we had a puppy that arrived with some troubling background from the breeder. Pixie was a ball of energy with the desire to pee everywhere inside. She obviously had been mishandled at the breeder and ate everything she could find, including her own poop. After the first two weeks, I didn't think I would be able to survive with her. She helped the US take our 9-month-old Bernedoodle, table surfer, thief extraordinaire, destroyer of any package, box, or other mail over the fence, digger of all things plants and dirt, barker to the stars, to a reasonable puppy who actually listens and responds to us now. Her comparison to a child being left unattended in Disneyland with no restraints or conditions was sorely accurate to our puppy, who had no real training from us. It is a great honor to announce that our boy passed the AKC CGC test! It's hard to describe how thankful our family are to the guidance and encouragement Bara has been providing us since our first class. Before Bara, we had worked with more than 4 different trainers in both group private classes since our boy was 7-weeks old. Although he was able to perform some basic commands, he did not have solid recall or loose leash walking -- which were painful when we wanted to take him to a hike or to a beach. He almost got hit by a car once because he attempted to chase after another dog all at a sudden, and got my mom injured on her hand at the same time. Some trainers we used even constantly call him a crazy dog and he got expelled out of the class. We also found ourselves frustrated and sometimes lost temper during training with my boy, which could only brought him more confusion. We are glad that we started working with Bara. We like the mindset that Bara has to work on behaviors with the right language - a combination of reward and consequence. Our boy now effectively knows what we want, and thus enjoys more free time running and exploring. We are able to walk in malls calmly, go to off-leash hikes without worrying about him chasing after wild animals and get hurt. Bara is my 4th dog trainer in the 1.5 years since I adopted Fred (yellow lab) in May 2020. Before adoption and for the first year of his life, Fred was neglected, abused, and unsocialized to people or dogs by his original owners. He was a mess of anxieties - reacted badly to dogs, people, cars, bikes, you name it. I reached out to Bara as I was avoiding having people over to my house due to concerns about his jumping up and snapping at people seemingly randomly. In only one session, Bara changed my life with Fred. She taught me how to use the e-collar (something I had resisted) sparingly and for the very first time I was able to leave him in the car to step out to use an ATM. I was able to chat with people without him lunging at them. On my 2nd session, Bara taught me how to have him respect the entry and wait for the command to be able to interact with people. I am happy to say that I recently had 10 people over at my house and Fred sat when I asked him to and chose to interact with guests in a playful manner. I can't thank Bara enough for stepping in when so many other trainers either didn't or couldn't help. Every dog owner knows that feeling- when you think you have it all under control and you've 'done this before' or 'know how to solve the issue.' But then you realize slowly that every pup is a different soul and with that comes a unique personality and unique behavioral pattern, so you can't just apply past learnings (and certainly can't just read up on the internet and figure out what might be best. So I found Bara and her Bee Positive Dog Training group and sought out her help. Some general obedience issues and then, just after we had our first little human, some very new and very frustrating behavioral issues started appearing and kept getting worse. Bara is incredible. Frankly I wouldn't think to use any other trainer or dog obedience company ever again. Bara has come over for 3 sessions across the six months we've had our pup - the last being the most important as it was getting hard to even walk our 8 month old border collie mix without all kinds of pulling, biting at the leash, and just generally horrible behavior. Bara is transparent, straightforward, kind, and humane while also being strict and no-nonsense. As someone who prides themselves on the ability to fix problems without 'calling for help' - I can say that an hour session with Bara is worth 24 hours of your time trying to work out issues with your dog without her. She not only immediately understands the issues and corrects it (literally with amazing results that happen before your eyes), but interacts with you the owner in a way that is respectful and cordial but also just as firm. She teaches both your dog and you so you can continue promoting the correct behaviors and corrections. Results are immediate and night and day caveating that you, the owner, listen to Bara as much as your beloved dog. We'll be bringing our pup to group classes with Bara next but suffice to say (and I have 20 years experience with other dogs and other trainers) I would never trust, let alone work with, anyone but Bara again. read more

We adopted a 6 month old Frenchie/Poodle puppy and were looking for a trainer to help with basic obedience, crate training, avoiding separation anxiety, and re-potty training. When fostered, our puppy learned to only pee on potty pads and would never pee outside. Our neighbors referred us to Bara and we're SO glad. Starting from the consultation call, Bara provided very clear guidance on how to effectively communicate with our dog and quickly + effectively teach him. For the crate and outside potty training, Bara gave us a schedule to follow. It seemed intense at first, but within the first 48 hours, our puppy was peeing regularly outside and was comfortable in his crate. Don't be freaked out by the idea of the schedule - it's a lifesaver and our puppy remains his *very* happy self. He now pees outside, sleeps quietly in his crate at night, and is comfortable if we leave him alone for periods of time. He's also is learning obedience commands so quickly and recently graduated to Bara's group obedience classes. I can't recommend Bara and Bee Positive Training enough! read more
