Stopped in during the Mardi Gras festival. They had great music, it's a great venue and the beers were very good. It's a family friendly place with root beer for the kids and peanuts for all. Tv's all around and both indoor and outdoor seating. Not our first time visit but the beers this time were much better than our last visit. read more

Great atmosphere and great beer. In the evening a food truck showed up outside, which the Beer Hound staff let us know was available. The quotes on the chalkboard around the bar were great, and the music was excellent as well! Fang and Kujo...great taste, even if the taps were a little temperamental. Sorry, I forgot to take pictures. I have stopped at Beer Hound before, and this time was just as pleasant as the first. I don't understand some of the ratings listed for this brewery. Cleanliness: great all the way. They offer free peanuts at the door so i would expect some shells laying around, but nope... Staff engagement: I was very surprised that they weren't that busy. Both times I have been in here the staff was fantastic. The Beer: Since this was our second time, we didn't do the flight. I had the Hefe, the wife had the Vanilla Porter. Both were great. They have a great list of beer, and they all were scrumptious. I had been looking forward to coming back to this brewery. Some places just make you feel welcome when you are away and this is one of those places. read more

I love beerhound brewery. The Mutt is definitely my favorite. It's light but very flavorful. This is a short walk from our home, and when there is live music on the patio on a nice day it is a perfect date night. We get a couple very well brewed beers, and when Manny's tacos and tortas truck is around expect some cheap yet incredible tacos. This is a great spot for locals with a laid back atmosphere. A previous commenter was unhappy with the automatic 18% gratuity, but I am not. When they don't add that, tips don't always get claimed and this makes the ratio of profit on alcohol too high which is an ABC violation in VA. You're going to want to tip the staff more anyway. They are friendly, hip, and knowledgable. This place will surely add to the appeal of culpeper. My only downside is that the Culpeper Renaissance does not post the Beerhound Brewery events on their website which would surely help locals know when to head over there for music. read more

Excellent sample brews and family-friendly atmosphere! I saw a few kids with their parents. They had bags of candy available for them which was a nice touch. There's are plenty of bench, table seating, and a few outdoor tables in the front. There were several large flat screen TVs showing sports games. The beers were a bit pricey but I only tried the sample 4 ounce sizes for 4 of their brews (They had 9 sample brews available). The ladies drawing the beer from the taps could have been nicer, and the older lady didn't even say anything to us which was a disappointment. read more

Some friends and I decided to meet at the establishment for beer and food. It turns out they do not serve anything other than prepackaged "starters" in plastic clam shell containers. They do have an arrangement with a local seafood restaurant to have food prepared and delivered, and there is also a food truck that parks outside the door providing an assortment of food such as burritos, tacos, and sandwiches. We had a beer sampler and it turns out all the beers were good. My favorite was the creme ale. My wife's favorite was the root beer which tasted and smelled like good old fashioned root beer. One of the problems I had with the place was the way they automatically added a 20% tip to the bill. The only real "service" that was provided was pulling the tap handle and filling glasses at the bar. We would then have to take the drinks to our table. Twenty percent tip is not what I would have left for that kind of service. That was a very large "star ding" for the place. Overall, the place was clean, the beer was good, the music was good and not too loud. However, the acoustics in the place does make the surrounding conversations loud and it was difficult to hear our table conversation. read more

Made our first...(and last)...visit to this establishment the day after it opened. The beer was OK, I guess, I mean beer is beer after all. It's either tasty or not, and to be absolutely truthful, the beer was fine. What got me was the fact that they automatically added a 20% "tip" to the bill. Now call me old fashioned, but I was brought up to think that a gratuity was something that was added by the patron after the fact to acknowledge superior customer service, not something added by the establishment itself to make more money, (which, by the way, we paid sales tax on the total amount), which is just wrong. As a rule, I normally tip more than 20%, provided the service warrants it, but that is MY choice. So, first and only visit from this resident. read more

We were really rooting for this place because we love Culpeper and we love Va Craft Brew, but they sadly missed the mark in a big way. None of the nine beers we tried were good nor did they resemble the style they were trying to achieve. The location and facility were great so that was good. Beer hound is such a wonderful addition to Culpeper! We are there at least once a week. The beer is delicious and I love the atmosphere, it's a great place to hang out! I don't mind paying the added gratuity to help support a growing local business. A lot of the local restaurants will deliver food here and they have menus onsite. There's usually a food truck right out front as well. I would highly recommend making a stop here! read more

My husband and I have been here a couple times and were excited that our parents were in town and we would be able to take them here since they are brew pub enthusiasts. We did not realize there was an event taking place the evening of the afternoon we came. We arrived about 2pm and discovered the 'brew and Que' event but it didn't start until 6. We were already seated and had ordered a flight but were already talking about coming back for the event later. After spending a couple hours and over $100 here we decided to walk to another establishment for a couple hours and come back for the event. But seeing that we had already spent a good deal of money here and the event cost was $30 per person and included food and one drink we talked with the bar tender and asked if we came back would there be any discount and he said sure he would take care of us. So we came back right about 6 at the start of the event ready to eat and drink and we spoke to the owner at the entrance told him we were here earlier and the bar tender said he would give us something extra since we were returning. The owner was rude, pretty much called us liars, so we went inside and spoke with the bartender. He still said he would not do anything for us, no exceptions and he insulted my husband, calling him a 'good salesman' very condescendingly. All he had to do was give us a free beer ticket or something small to show his appreciation for supporting his establishment twice in one day for what would have been well over $300. But he chose to be greedy and has now lost 4 customers and maybe more after hearing our review. We typically spend at least $100 every weekend at breweries but we will not be coming back to beer hound. We went on to another brewery near by and spent our money there and a gentlemen who was at beer hound when we were there said he heard the whole thing and he couldn't believe how the owner treated us and he ended up leaving as well. Their event was a flop, ended up pouring rain after about an hour, he could have at least made some money off us and maybe lost the cost of a few beers he would have thrown in and we would have paid the full fee to get in. The beers are ok, nothing worth returning and supporting someone who doesn't appreciate repeat customers for though. read more

My father, a cancer patient, came out to view live music in this establishment. There was the option - grass with your own chairs or patio with shade - he chose to bring his own chair - you know, cancer is expensive. That doesn't mean you can't still enjoy some of the free things in life, right? Obviously, it's the middle of summer and he got hot so he sat his chair up on the patio (folded up) and walked inside to ask for a bottled water. He was declined because he didn't pay the $5 entry. Okay, not a big deal. He went to use the water cooler and they told him that even that was for customers only and told him if he wasn't buying anything - he needed to leave. What in the actual hell is wrong with people today?! Water is water! If you are looking for a place to come that has zero customer service or HUMAN DECENCY - this is your place! If that $5 entry fee is SO IMPORTANT then make it mandatory. Good grief. read more

The beer is mediocre at best. They include an automatic 20% tip on every transaction. The owner then said this was so customers didn't have to do the math, seriously? 20% for what? pulling the beer tap? There were six patrons and 3 people working. Instead of coming around and asking if we needed anything the waitress spent 40 minutes on her phone outside and behind the counter while the owner sat in a booth and watched tv. This place is a joke and should be avoided, they are more concerned about turning a profit than the customers. One of the staff was also just hanging out drinking as well. Great place to watch a game, listen to some live music or just hang out. Super friendly service and a great selection of beers available by the pint, growler or tasting pour. Although there's no food service, you can get just about anything delivered to you while you're there. And there's often a taco truck parked outside. I suppose I get why some are annoyed by the gratuity being included in the cost of the beers, but it is clearly posted on the blackboard next to the price list, as well as on the bill, so it really shouldn't be a big surprise to anyone. And you don't have to end an evening of beers with math, so maybe just think of it as doing you a favor. read more

Great addition to Culpeper. Love the atmosphere & of course the beer. It is nice to have a place to meet friends, clients, etc. that is not a "bar." I also like the addition of having a few food trucks show up, it is nice to have something different offered! I understand the added gratuity for the folks working there & as long as they are friendly, helpful & courteous I don't mind paying because more than likely I would end up tipping the same if not more! I was quite excited to finally get the chance to visit the Beer Hound tonite. Sadly after an EXTREMELY poor experience it will be my last. My son and I stepped in ready to purchase 2 samplers. The bartender immediately advised us not to - to keep our money and just share one then have a pint later. What businessman turns away $$ ? But...ok. The barkeep poured and we carried them to our table. When we finished we took back the empties, ordered 2 pints and carried them out. Sadly THEN I notice the 20 percent tip INCLUDED with every purchase. When I ask the barkeep to explain this detail on the bill, specifically because I and my son carried ALL of our drinks to and fro, they mispoured 1 of our pints, and all he had to do was pull the tap.....what was the tip for exactly??!! Neither he nor either of the other 2 staff members checked on us and no more than 10 people were there. His response was priceless. It helps ME by not making me do math. Dear Lord, Give. Me. Strength. A 20 percent auto-tip, so I don't have to do math. read more

The service in this place is terrible! We have been there a few times but will not be going back after this last incident. We went to the bar got some drinks and some food. Their booth tables are very narrow and my husband accidentally spilled some food trying to navigate the tray of food on the table. He cleaned it up the best he could and we finished our food and drinks. He went to get the car and I went to pay. The bartender, a man with a bald head and glasses took my money and asked if I was going to clean up the mess on the table. The mess he was talking about was our empty glasses and empty food baskets. If I wanted to clean up after dinner I would stay home, and I told him that it was not my responsibility as the customer. He was the server he was getting paid by my patronage he could clean up. He told me to leave and never come back. You can bet I won't, plus their beer is mediocre at best! read more
