This place is usually packed when it's a First Friday night, but unbeknownst to most, this place is also opened Tues-Sat from 4 p.m.-midnight. The atmosphere on FF is jubilant and festive, but on the quieter nights, it gives you a chance to take in the bar and the outdoor seating in peace. The draft beer selection is limited but the ones they have are solid and CHEAP! You can get a pitcher of a good German beer for $12! Make sure you have cash, though. Talk about a hidden treasure! If you unfamiliar with this place, just think about Southtown,it is right at the end of the strip before Blue Star. It looks like a house with a small lighted sign out front. What you will find when you go inside is another world! They pride themselves on their German beer selection and usually don't disappoint. I am a Wit, Blonde, Saisson, Trippel girl, so there's a lot of room to hit the mark. Their staff is very friendly and it's a very homey atmosphere. Love, love, LOVE! Beethoven's is an incredibly cool and different place for San Antonio. German culture isn't rich and interesting, and this place takes biergarten to a whole new level! I love the outdoor space. It's huge and open, with plenty of seating, sparkly lights for ambiance, and a big stage where I've caught some interesting bands from time to time. The inside is an incredibly historic old building that seems to have changed little over the last 100 years or so. German beer rocks. German food really rocks. (Yes, I said that. I know I've told you before that I hate German food, but guess what? I've changed my mind!) First Friday Pub Run begins and ends at this jewel of a beer garten. I've spoken to several of the board members about joining- they love everyone. No need to be German to join. And if you join- there are special priviledges I wont disclose...you gotta find them yourself. ;) When you first arrive- let them know you are a runner and you get in for free. Oh, Beethoven's. A San Antonio gem for sure. This might be the only place I enjoy sitting shoulder to shoulder with sweaty strangers, drinking German beer (seriously, I never drink beer, much less the German kind), and doing the chicken dance all in the same night. I even learned how to polka here! Not much of it stuck with me after that night, but the blurry memories of twirling around underneath the giant, beautifully lit trees are near and dear to my heart. I've brought many an out-of-town guest here on First Friday and recently enjoyed Oktoberfest, but my absolute favorite time to go to the bier garten is during Fiesta. Don't miss out on this! The vibe is especially raucous. Everyone at Beethovens is extremely friendly, so don't be shy. Go 'head and chow down on that messy bratwurst, make some friends in line waiting for the restroom, and don't be shocked if you get a little Optimator spilled on you in the process. Imagine the odds. My job sends me to San Antonio for a short detail right as the annual Fiesta San Antonio is underway. The fiesta is one of the largest municipal festivals around. Fiesta runs for several days and hosts about 100 events. And who would have thought there'd be a large German event at Fiesta? The Fiesta Gartenfest was going on right in the middle of my assignment. Bored with just going back to our hotel rooms, some of my coworkers and I decided to check the Gartenfest out. The Garten features bier stube type seating and it reminds me a little of the old Penn Brewery in Pittsburgh. Bier stube seating means sharing long picnic tables with other parties. As one other reviewer noted, you arrive as strangers but you make friends quickly. The food here is typical Germanfest chow and my brat was very good. It's dirt cheap to get in too. The outdoor patio is even more impressive with picnic benches and small stage where you'll routinely find performances from local groups and big bands. The Beethoven Maennerchor Halle und Garten is like the illegitimate lovechild of a German Gaststube and the local American Legion or VFW... 1. The tables are draped with plastic cloths of red, black, and gold! 2. There is a long bar with taps of some of my favorite German beers! 3. Little old dude with snowman socks sitting at a table watching Moby Dick (the 1956 film with Gregory Peck). This place has it all! As I sit with my friends enjoying an ice cold Krombacher Pils, we see the bartender. A man of small stature. Dangling from his mouth, an unlit cigar. He is friendly and attentive. I watch as he grabs a glass...fills it halfway with cola and tops it off with beer. ...yes. This fine gentleman has just made a traditional Colabier. Suddenly, I find myself transported back to the Fatherland. The only thing missing is a big plate of currywurst and/or schnitzel. They regularly host a variety of events including Fasching, Oktoberfest, and Christkindlmarkt. I will absolutely be back here for events or just when I'm in town to get my Guenther fix! I went here for Oktoberfest and had such a great time. The biergarten is huge and open air. There's lots of seating and plenty of beer. We sampled quite a few things including brats w kraut, potato pancakes, apple pastries. SO FULL afterwards! All the food was great except for the soft pretzel which was one of the pre made frozen ones that had been reheated and had too much salt. It's pretty rare to find a place w decent soft pretzels so Beeethoven gets a pass. The pitchers of good German beer are 13 bucks. It's a steal. We found on street parking just around the corner. Note to the ladies, the bathroom is spotless! Very pleasant beergarden with plenty of places to sit. The interior of Beethoven Maennerchor is a decent old bar, which may be a bit well lit for most people. It's the kind of place where old German guys get together to play cards while enjoying some of the bar's fine German brews. The best time to visit is when there's a concert in the beer garden. That's when Beethoven Maennerchor comes alive. You'll find people from 5 to 80 dancing, everyone is in a good mood, and the pitchers are cold and delicious. I've heard everything from polkas to blues to rock & roll in the beer garden--all of it excellent. The last time we were there, a young boy was dancing with such enthusiasm and aplomb that people started tipping him dollars in a cup. This place was so unexpectedly FUN! Took me right back to memories of the Hof Brau Haus in Munich. They have a lovely outdoor area and on the night I went there was a great Jazz musician, Jim Cullum, playing. There were several swing dancers that were very enjoyable to watch, & it was even more enjoyable trying to keep up with them! The beer was great and flowed freely & there are some regulars that add great color and character to the overall ambience :) It is one of those cozy places the locals know of & truly enjoy. Readers, please turn your attention to The Beethoven Männerchor Halle Und Garten, a full fledged Bier Garten in the King William District / Southtown that's "over-flowing with German entertainment, good food, wine, and beer, and fun." Well, that sounds great, doesn't it? The other good news is that while you polish off more sauerkraut and spätzle than is sane to consume, you will likely find yourself enjoying the fine musical entertainment of a Gartenkonzert (translation: garden concert. Who knew!), which includes Maennerchor, Damenchor, Kinderchor, and Beethoven Concert Band performances. All the chors a human could ask for. The bad news is: nah, there's no bad news. G-g-g-gotcha! I paid $5 to enter and then shelled out a few bucks more for various food items (the bratwurst and butter noodles receive the highly esteemed rating of muy guten) and a pitcher (don't worry, I shared with friends). And bring cash!! While there is an ATM at the Beethoven Männerchor Halle Und Garten, I say that fees are for CHUMPS. You'll need to check the calendar online before visiting to make sure that The Beethoven is open to the public on the night you plan to visit (every First Friday and most third Fridays seem to be open, with other public nights sprinkled throughout the month). And if you're still not convinced, you can check out their Facebook page to see pictures of happy, beautiful, people laughing and enjoying themselves. This is the greatest and cheapest place in San Antonio to sit out side and enjoy pours of great imported German beers and some craft beers as well without killing your wallet. $3 on Tuesday and usually $4 the test of the time! If you're a non-member, you need to know: The concert season generally opens during fiesta with a four-day bash. Gartenkonzerts are on the third Friday of every month after Fiesta until Oktoberfest, which is usually Friday and Saturday for the first two weekends in October. There are occasional other public events (watch their website for details) and they usually have something fun going on for First Fridays. The Brats are excellent, the Leberkaese is better (especially with grilled onions), and the Potato Salad (vinegar style) is the best I've ever had. The beer? Please. It is the good stuff, including Bittburger, Spaten, Fransiskaner and more. All ages are welcome. read more

I wanted to make my 100th review be a place that I really love. My bf is now a member because we've been frequenting the place so much over the last 4 or so years and singing in the choir is an easy trade off for free admission. You have to get sponsored to actually join, so you have to put in some time to get to know people and literally pay dues to become a member. They have great German beer selections and are one of the few places in town that I know carries non-alcoholic beer on a regular basis. It's been great to have that option while preggers :) The food here is all homemade and super-tasty. They have the BEST potato salad I've ever had--German-style of course. The brats are fabulous, with a choice of red or white (go with the white, by the way). They make potato pancakes in the back corner served with applesauce that are a staples when I'm sticking to my usual vegetarian diet. Among the other can't miss dishes are the reuben and the goulash. I've never had the lieberkase, but for those that are into bologna or spam, I've heard it's really great. It's a great neighborhood venue for locals and visitors are always welcome. Children are allowed and can play all over the place. Not to mention the band is bound to play the chicken dance at some point for some good family fun. The dance floor always has room--especially during the sweltering summers, but fall brings cooler weather and more dancing. I love The Beethoven! What a fun and interesting place to come and have a cold pitcher or two! This is one of the best places to people watch as the crowd is an interesting mix ranging from older German men to young hipster families. There are always events posted on the marquee but one constant is First Friday! On the first Friday of every month, stop by Beethoven's for some Wienerschnitzel, great German beer, music and dancing! This place is kid friendly venue, however, leaving the fur babies at home as they are not allowed. read more

We regularly visit Beethoven's and when we decided to get married, we immediately agreed that it would be the perfect place to have our reception....we could not have picked a better place!! The staff was so incredibly helpful, especially the bar manager Jason Trevino. Despite having the reception the day after First Friday, they came in early and set up the garten to our specifications, and even let us get in the halle the day before to decorate. The food was INCREDIBLE and I was blown away by the deal they gave us! Anna Gomez, a volunteer at Beethoven's was like having my own, personal day of wedding coordinator. I cannot say enough good things about Beethoven's as a venue and about the people who work and volunteer there. Beethoven's allowed my dream wedding to become a reality!! read more

Now this is what I am talking about for a German experience! This place is only open a handful of times during the year to the public. This place will give you an awesome German experience with culture, music and people! You mostly have to sit outdoors but there is lots of picnic table seating and plenty of German to go around! There is a building with a bar inside that you can visit as well. On First Fridays they serve delicious Brats, sauerkraut, german potato salad, pretzels and desserts. I think it was only $2 to get in and I believe the money goes to their organization for keeping German culture alive. If you love beer and you're badass then this is the place for you. It's one of my favorite places I visit once a month during the Pub Run. It's super cheap to get into and they have a wonderful selection of German Beers (my FAVE) and yummy pretzels & bratwursts. If you're looking for a good time, they always have different events every weekend. The members dress up in traditional wear and the band will play polka, or big band music, or sometimes the cloggers will put on a lovely show. The vibe is always FUN FUN FUN! read more

Established in 1867, Beethoven is run by one of the oldest German singing societies in Texas and they work hard to preserve German culture, language, and music. Beethoven's is a great place for groups to go on First Friday to enjoy traditional German food and beer. The crowd is always diverse and the people friendly and fun. Great Atmosphere. It is cash only but there is an ATM inside now so no worries of having to walk down the street to get cash. I've been coming here for First Friday almost every month for the last few years and have always had a great time. The beer is great and the music performances are almost always different. If you're coming for the first time, do yourself a favor and come on a First Friday or during Oktoberfest. For a nice dose of German entertainment come to a Gartenkonzert. Also held every month, Gartenkonzerts include performances by the choirs along with traditional music and food. I love this place. read more

Beethoven's is fun when its really packed and you want to be surrounded by strangers (fun strangers, though). Its annoying that they only take cash and when they stop charging a cover right after you pay your cover. They have a few beers that are hard to find and the food is great during Octoberfest. This is an exemplary beer garden - here's why: BAR - Bar Staff are friendly and offer samples of different beer and premixed cocktails. The beer is all German, meaning you are getting solely hops, barley, water, and yeast. They have about 10 on tap and are escalating to 30+ for Fiesta. AMBIANCE - this is really what one goes to Beethoven for. Beautiful twinkly-light trees make it fun and spirited, and the crowd, when it's full, are loud but not crazy. Seating - indoor and outdoor for maximum comfort. The outdoor space is filled with vast picnic tables and the inside is of a very touristy German kitchen style. my favorite part is their framed picture of David Hasselhoff. I've been twice on a Friday night, and in July it was hoppin but April was verify quiet at 7pm. I can't wait to go back to this spot for a date with the Germans. read more
