Wanted to show our support for Belacan Grill while they're still in Tustin. Been actually craving some of their dishes so glad we finally got to come by last Thursday. I've been a big fan ever since they opened in 2007ish, when I still lived in Irvine and started a Foodie Group at Columbus Grove. Belacan Grill is family-owned and the owner is the chef so the quality has not changed at all. The dishes I was craving: Calamari, Daging Kecap Manis (tender beef in sweet and spicy dark soy glaze) and the Belacan Fried Rice. Everything was as good as I remember. Went to Belacan Grill on a Sunday evening. We put in reservations through Yelp without realizing that they'd be closing early on Sunday. They seated us as soon as we got there. We did have enough time to order and get our food out in a good time frame. Below are my ratings, would come back again as so far have not had a bad meal here. Late night restaurant still busy but I don't have to wait. Service was extremely good thank you for taking good care of us. We almost didn't want the kway teow and wanted fried rice and server was holding it in her hand and said if we really really wanted to switch it out she could do it for us. We ended up trying the kway teow anyways but turned out to he a disappointment. Not enough flavor? Missing salt or soy sauce? Only the egg made it good BUT! Beef satay was perfect! Not chewy. Was so delicious with the sauce they have. I wanted additional sauce for togo but that's additional cost . And chicken pop was just perfectly fried and seasoned chicken. It was delicious. Hot off the press: Belacan Grill is closing for six months and moving to Orange. If you love this place as much as I do, let's rally around the people who work there and let them know they will be there when they reopen. Tustin is remodeling the plaza where this historic restaurant now is located. This beautiful location is moving to a new location seven miles away. The food here is amazing. There are so many unique dishes you can not find anywhere else. For example, last night I had lychee with ice. Fresh, ripe lychees, mixed with juice and ice. Simple, fresh, and amazing. My first time trying Malaysian food! The service here was amazing, we felt really taken care of and everyone was so kind, will be back just for them! We came pretty late but could still order their lunch specials which are a great price. We had such a hard time figuring out what to order because everything sounded so yummy! Loved the Malaysian curry chicken that came with rice and a side salad. We also ordered the mamak mee goreng from the regular menu, which was a huge portion of egg noodles, chicken, shrimp, egg, tomato, and a lot of other stuff all swimming in a savory sauce. So good! I think the dishes were a touch more oily than I expected, but I still very much enjoyed and I'll definitely be back here to try more authentic Malaysian food. This place is moving soon another location developer bought land. I have been eating and following this place for near twenty years. The son is now the cook following in dads footsteps. Food is exceptional here many Asians and mostly indies dine here. This Malay style restaurant has many twists as this food is unique in flavors and seasoning. This review is for a delivery order & the food taste, presentation, portion and quality is a disaster. This is probably the lowest tier of Malaysian restaurant I've ever had. They can't even spare a container for the Murtabak, it came wrapped in foil LOL. Like not even inside a container, it was just swished around the bag wrapped in foil. On top of it, it was soggy as F. Typically, restaurants will poke holes in the container to let it "breathe" in order to keep roti crisp even if you line it with foil and if they don't know about this, idk why they're even a restaurant. The lack of knowledge on this makes it questionable. Moving onto the Roti with curry, curry was meh. Usually you get hit with an aroma of inviting spices but this one just taste like what I find in frozen aisles or prepackaged cube curry. Nothing stands out. What a let down.. on top of that, roti seems like it was frozen, not fresh and soggy. It tasted like a scallion pancake without flavor, non of that puff pastry crusty, buttery and flakey texture you'd get from real authentic places. Food quality is definitely lacking here. In addition, the portion is so small, so laughable. (Refer to pic) The chicken satay came wrapped in a white paper bag which should have been foil so that it doesn't create moisture and then dry out the chicken. Idk what's with their packaging but again, you can't even spare a container? Instead you just opt to use a ton of plastic to wrap everything. It took such a long time to unwrap everything because they wrap every single sauce container, plastic container, paper container in Saran Wrap. A bit unenvironmental. The peanut sauce that came with the satay wasn't at all delicious nor authentic. Usually I'd want a refill of that sauce, but I end up just skipping it in the end because it wasn't even all that great. Lastly the laksa was decent but nothing to write home about. I've also never really had a laksa without prawns before, this version came with weird types of tofu (one that had a purple filling which had no taste) and fried tofu wedges (which is fine). There were two fish balls. Honestly this laksa tastes just decent, definitely not a signature item in any realm. I've had better laksa in Irvine from a place not specializing in laksa. I guess as long as you don't expect it to be like Ipoh Kopitiam quality then it's OK. read more

I actually heard about this restaurant from YouTube (Obi Eats) and went in curiously optimistic, but left completely obsessed. The restaurant space felt traditional with neutral tones, warm wood accents, and a touch of tropical decor. Their bar is small and can accommodate about 4-5 guests, while their outdoor dining patio can seat a few parties (there's a couple of high top tables). THE FOOD. - Roti Canai. Soft, flaky, and crispy all at once. It's the kind of flatbread you absentmindedly keep tearing apart until it's gone. The real MVP was the curry which was aromatic, perfectly spicy, and packed with flavor. Highly addictive. Highly recommend. - Beef Rendang. Tender beef infused with complex layers of earthy, slightly sweet, and savory notes. Highly recommend. - Hainan Chicken (Half Order). Silky poached chicken that was melt in your mouth tender! Dip 'em in the trio of sauces (ginger, sweet chili, sweet soy) for an elevated bite. It comes with fragrant Hainan rice that was amazing! Highly recommend. - Belacan Fried Rice. The shrimp paste gave the rice a deep umami backbone, while chicken, shrimp, bell peppers, onions, and egg added texture and a mix of flavors. It's a good dish to try out. THE DRINKS. - Teh Ais. Classic Malaysian milk tea: strong black tea base with sweetened condensed milk. It's creamy, sweet, and comforting. - Unsweetened Iced Tea. Simple and refreshing. No frills, just a clean reset between bites of bold flavors. THE PARKING. Free surface lot parking near and around the restaurant. No circling. No drama. THE VERDICT. Authentic, incredibly flavorful Malaysian cuisine served efficiently. The staff were quick and friendly, and the dishes came out of the kitchen impressively fast. Came here recently for a group holiday dinner, and everything came out delicious and hot! For whatever reason, I always forget to visit Belacan, but when I'm actually there, I love the food! There aren't many Malaysian restaurant options in the area, but they definitely do a good job. Kim is very friendly and loves chatting with customers. I also heard they will be moving to a larger space in the Spring of 2026, so they're doing well for themselves. Would love to come out more often and try more of their dishes! I'm anxious now that they're moving and feeling nostalgic. This has become one of my favorite restaurants down in South OC. I live in SGV and there's one Malaysian restaurant here but in my humble opinion it doesn't compare to Belacan. Start out with the chicken wings, they're delicious and tangy maybe with some curry powder. Always perfect, golden fried. Service is friendly and fruitful. We ordered: - nasi lemak: a fan favorite for sure. Coconut rice was very nice, also loved how everything on the plate was seasoned differently. Big fan of the sambal and seasoning on the meat. - roti canai: liked the curry a lot. Reminds me of Thai style curry but less sweet. Belacan is an amazing Malaysian restaurant and I've eaten here and had takeout at least 10 times in the last few years. I love asian food and this spot is a standout in all of Orange County. I always take my friends and family here whenever they're visiting because it's always reliably delicious and has a slightly unique and different flavor profile from the usual chinese, thai items that most people are used to. Every item I've tried on the menu has been full of great flavor (and all the items are also halal which is great). But my personal favs are the 1) Ayam Masak Merah (a sweet chicken dish similar to orange chicken), 2) Daging Kecap Manis (a sweet tender beef dish), and the 3) spicy crispy fish filet in chili tamarind sauce. The restaurant is always clean with a relaxed atmosphere. Service is efficient whenever I've eaten there (and for takeout orders as well). The food here is EXCELLENT! We ordered the Mutarbak and Gado Gado for starters and it did not disappoint! The taste of the sauce brought back memories of our time in KL. For our main we had the beef rendang and pineapple fried rice. The rice was rich with just the right mix of onion giving it the fragrance expected of truly good fried rice. The beef rendang was tasty but personally i think they could have chosen a better cut. Somewhat tougher than i wanted and took away from the anticipation. All in all it was a pleasant dining experience and a welcome change to our normal fare. read more

My husband and I got recommended this place by a mutual friend, and we're so glad we came to try this place out! Note!! Maybe...don't come on a Saturday evening during peak hours. I wanted to wait to go a different day or get it to-go, but my husband was insistent on going when we did and, what do you know, when we arrived the waitlist was an hour to an hour and a half long with like 11+ parties in front of us... I put my name on the list, and we sat down on the inside wall seating as we decided if we really wanted to wait so long to eat, but luckily they had some outside seating available for small parties. My husband and I managed to get seated in like 10-15mins instead of the estimated hour+. Super grateful to the employees for making that happen for us. We ordered the teh tarik (hot), char kwey teow, mamak mee goreng, roti canai, and chicken satay (we had wanted to order beef but they had run out). Highly recommend the teh tarik, roti canai, and mamak mee goreng!! The teh tarik had amazing strong tea flavor. Roti canai was wonderfully crispy, light, and airy, and the curry it was paired with was freaking delicious. I'm actually looking into making both the tek tarik and roti canai when I stop by my local Indian grocer. I thought the char kwey teow was fine, but lacked flavor? It kind of tasted like a pad see ew, but less flavorful. My husband really, really like the chicken satay, but I didn't really care for the flavor profile. I mostly dipped it in the curry sauce the roti came with. Service was solid. Really appreciated that the kitchen boxed our leftovers for us. Definitely will be back to try other items on their menu! We came on a Friday afternoon and asked to be seated at their bar, since they have happy hour specials. They offer several appetizers, like their Roti Canai, which was delicious and very reasonably priced during happy hour. They also offer beer and wine as well as a few cocktails. We had the Ginger Gin and the Pina Colada, both were mixed in front of us. Unfortunately, despite happy hour, they were still quite pricey and weak. So next time, we probably will focus on the food. My friends raved about this place. I took my daughter in law for her bday. The server was excellent and if you go early there no real wait. Initially was going to place an order online but the wait time showed 45-60 minutes so I called in instead which was only a 15 minute wait. Brendan was friendly and quickly took my order. Food was ready on time as promised. Opted for the Char Kway Teo ($15), one of my favorite Malaysian dishes, but the flavor was lackluster and the noodles were overcooked / broke apart easily. We pre-ordered our apps right away but other tables got served before we did due to a glitch in their ordering system. All was well after the food was served. The Hainanese Chicken debate goes on. We were visiting my wife's cousin in Irvine and she wanted to treat us to lunch at Belacan Grill. She said that they have the Best Hainanese Chicken (海南鸡) she has ever had and I had to try it out. It is a popular dish in Southeast Asia in places like Singapore and Malaysia, but is said to originate on the Chinese island of Hainan. The preparation is relatively simple but the ingredients have to be top notch, a tender whole chicken poached with ginger & scallions and the resulting rich, fatty chicken broth is used to make the tasty chicken rice. The whole chicken is completely deboned & sliced and served with ginger garlic sauce, sweet dark soy sauce & chili sauce, depending on your taste preference. Belacan's Hainanese Chicken & Rice is excellent, but I have to say that some others that I've had are an edge better. I would definitely have this again though, if & when we return. Get an extra bowl of the chicken rice though. Other dishes we had were just as good. We had a double appetizer portion of Roti Canai and the thin pan fried bread slices were hot & crispy that were perfect to dip in the curry chicken sauce. We also had both chicken & beef satay skewers, always a favorite of mine when it comes with a chopped peanut sauce. Rounding out the meal, we had Stir-fried Kang Kung (Water Spinach) & Garlic, another of my favorite vegetables. The hollow tubular stalks have a satisfying crunch when you bite into them. read more

We came here for a coworker's birthday lunch. I have never tried Malaysian food but after my visit I was sold! Everything was delicious. The plate I ordered for the group had a egg on top of fried rice and it was the best in my opinion. Plenty of chicken plates and plenty of other things I hadn't tried before.
