Belga is definitely another 3.5 star experience. I really enjoyed aspects of my brunch, and I feel like you have to order just the right things here. I ordered the La Quiche "Three Little Piggies" ($16.50), which was two little puff pastry quiches with a salad. I felt like the price was a little high, but the dish was good. The eggs were fluffy and the flavor was good. One person ordered the Cowboy skillet, which was huge, and the other ordered a waffle, which was very tiny and apparently not too impressive. We also split some Belgian Hash Brown Waffles ($9.50), which were severely over peppered and not very good, and the Cinnamon Roll Waffle ($4), which was perfect to split for dessert. The brunch drinks were a miss. The mimosa ($9) didn't taste like much of anything, and my friend could not take more than a sip or two of the Bloody Mary ($10). Service was mediocre. A wrong dish was dropped off and the runner started arguing with us that it was the right dish. The server intervened, but it was unimpressive. Easy to get a last minute reservation, which is rather telling when there are places across the street that require a reservation a month out. read more

I've never been impressed wit Belga Cafe. It's been around for years and I just can't fall in love with it. Here's what's NOT going for it (and what is): What's not: -The food: It just isn't amazing. The fries comes in small portions and aren't very good or unique. The waffles are sub par and the croque monsieur was literally a cheap piece of ham, cheese, and egg on two slices of Wonderbread. I've had several items on the menu and it's never good. -The price: It's expensive. For how sub par the food is, they overcharge. Brunch is $17+ for just average food. -The space: It's set up to fit more tables than they should so it's a hard place to bring children to. What's going for it: -The beer list? -The service? So on a recent trip to DC we stayed in a lovely townhouse on Capital Hill. One street behind Barracks Row or Restaurant Row.... it took two mins to walk to our place of stay. Thank goodness for that. We went to one or two restaurant/pubs each evening after sightseeing and had a blast. We enjoyed our meals tremendously. The place was cool. We sat inside but right by the open windows which was interesting because you are basically looking down on outside diners but the Fresh air was nice! Belga is a cute Belgian spot perfect for a weekend brunch before perusing Eastern Market. We stopped in on a Saturday afternoon with reservations, and found the place to be absolutely packed. We settled on a nice, quiet table on their intimate patio, perfect for people watching. For our brunch cocktails, she went with a classic Bloody Mary served playfully with celery foam, whereas I went for an absolutely perfect espresso martini. Our brunch was a delicious taste of something new- broodje ei met truffle, a delicious folded truffle omelet sandwich served on a buttery brioche bun for her, and a coddled egg in the bokkal, what I figured was sort of a signature dish, for me. Served in a sort-of glass fish bowl, it was a delicious layered dish of buttery mashed potatoes, hollandaise, and poached eggs, served with baguette for dipping, making for a rich, homey, and satisfying breakfast. We paired our entrees with some delicious Belgian fries served with an aioli trio and, to end our meal, a few liege waffle bites. Although the waitstaff was obviously overloaded, our service was impeccable and quick. We went there on Sunday afternoon. They serve brunch till 4 PM. We had a mix of brunch and lunch orders. The location is nice in the Capitol Hill area. We ordered green eggs, Belgian waffle, and a burger. The waffle was average, not that much taste. definitely not what you would expect in a Belgian restaurant. The burger was average. The green eggs was below average, too salty. I substituted the bacon for turkey bacon which was very greasy and soaking in oil. Our server was nice but not very welcoming. What a wonderful surprise! For whatever reason, we'd only thought of Belga for brunch. But last night, wifey wanted mussels so we went to Belga. Came here with my young son since they are one of few places open early on barracks row and we wanted an early-ish breakfast. Menu has improved over the years with some interesting additions, but the service was horrible. When asking the waiter to have all of the items that come on top of the plain and simple waffle on the side due to a potential allergy, he said that wasn't possible since there are no substitutions. I was polite and said that this wasn't a substitution and that I just wanted things on the side. He finally said if I wanted any changes it would be 4 dollars of a surcharge. We almost walked out but I asked for a manager and then at that time he went back to the kitchen and came out and agreed to do it begrudgingly. Not what I would expect for a simple request of having items on the side of something called "plain and simple". I understand that having major modifications is difficult, but i am sure ihop or Denny's would have handled the situation better for 1/4 of the price. read more

I reserved outside seating, but when I arrived on a Sunday morning there wasn't any available so they put us in the street seating inside the hut. The floor wasn't level and the window kept hitting my back. The food was good. I had the EITJES & GEROOKTE ZALM and I honestly recommend. It's a bit expensive for the quality. Luckily the menu has English translations of the dishes but does not convey the absolute deliciousness of the dinner and brunch selections. We heard promising things about this place; made a reservation and arrived on time. We were seated outside at a table over the sewer grate. We asked to move to a different table outside that wasn't over the sewer. Our server was not very friendly nor attentive. I asked for the falafel waffle with the poached egg on the side and no garlic sauce. My meal arrived with the eggs on top of the waffle and garlic sauce on the salad. I asked the waiter to fix my meal- it was brought back with the egg on a separate plate (essentially just taken off the food). I had to ask a second time, in which I received a small plate with the falafel waffle and another small plate with a plain salad. My friend ordered the waffle and it came out cold. She had to ask for it to be warmed up. Overall, a very disappointing experience as we heard good things. Any time I'm back in DC I always try to dine at my favorite old neighbhorhood restaurant. Amazingly, they still have the sea bass with spinach and mushrooms on the menu after all these years. Even more impressive is that the dish somehow is more refined and the perfect fish dish. I try to replicate it at home and it just doesn't taste the same. Of course we had to do the mussels again, but this time they had a new one on the menu....MUSSELS "DIABOLIQUE" with clams, calamari, tomatoes, jalapeños, cilantro, scallions, red onions, garlic, mushrooms, lobster broth....sounds like too much going on but it really works. Next time I would try the "truffels en prei" with sausage, truffles, cream and beer. My only slight complaint is their wine list....I know they specialize in beers and on return I'll stick to their extensive beer list... which are more reasonably priced. read more

We visited Belfast Cafe for restaurant week on a Saturday night in August. We were greeted with a warm welcome. The appetizers came out first, and they were delicious, albeit very small portion-wise. The boy did remind me about the fact that the options for where one can obtain a decent brunch, mussels, and Belgian beer around noon on any given day are pretty severely limited. That sobering realization earned them an extra star. Overall, I'd much rather head up a few blocks to Granville Moore's for a superior dining experience for about the same price. The green eggs were... exactly that. They looked green, but none of the herbs that the menu promised in them could be tasted at all in the dish. For all I know, they might as well have been tinted with green food coloring, because they tasted exactly like scrambled eggs to me. As Michele already noted, the apple wood smoked bacon here is as limp as the wrist of the nelliest boi you could imagine. I have to say that the mussels looked extraordinarily tasty. We ordered the Rodenbach with red beer, bacon, and asparagus. The flavor was fine, the mussels themselves were a huge portion, and came with a site of pretty solid frites. I didn't think that they were particularly impressive - certainly not nearly as decadent or as impressive as the fromage bleu moules at Granville Moore's. Like certain other things, it's hard for me to imagine decently prepared mussels as being -bad- per se. I've definitely had better. These didn't seem inspired to me. Certainly for the cost of our meal, we could have readily had a much more mouthwatering and awe inspiring experience elsewhere (north a few blocks). I don't expect to be back. read more

I would not recommend this place to anyone. We had a reservation but they gave our table to someone else who checked in later. We had to wait for another table and they barely apologized. The host was very rude and disrespectful to us. He ignored our requests and made us feel unwelcome. They also seated us in the sun heat and did not offer any shade. The food was mostly okay, but the french toast was really good ( the chocolate croissant was really bad). Do yourself a favor and avoid this place if you do not feel like dealing with the rude staff. An overly expensive mediocre experience. I had heard good things so I stopped in for a quick dinner. The "best steak Tartare in DC" is frankly false advertising. I had it as an entree. It has the consistency of ground beef and not much flavor. Comes with a barely edible salad. I was told it came with fries and bread. They charged me $7 for the bread. And the $15 beer I ordered came in a small tulip glass and a full 3rd of it was foam. Honestly the best part of the whole meal was the bread. It was fresh and delicious. If this is what is waiting for me in Belgium, I can't wait to travel and visit the country because the experience of eating that food was amazing. I came to Belga Cafe as a suggestion from my lady's sister. The GF was feeling Belgian, so here we were! I went along with a couple of my friends on this food adventure. Where to begin... Belga Cafe is situated on a pretty busy street and when we got there the place was bustling. Luckily, I made a reservation on OpenTable and copped a table. Our waiter was nice and helpful and helped us with drinks and got us situated. I think the service was pretty much on point. We ordered: Filet Américan Préparé (Appetizer) - Basically a steak tartare, with a quail egg on the side. This was a simplistic appetizer and tasty. Mussels Ostendaise - This is what I got, and well it was only for me too, as the lady got her own ostendaise.This dish is just a big tub of mussels mixed with whatever you want. I got one that was cooked with lobster with a lobster garlic sauce which was pretty good. I felt that the lobster sauce was a little bland, but I think it's because of the steam that was created from cooking the mussels and it's a little tough as far as that goes. But, overall I could still taste a hint of the garlic and lobster sauce mixing together. This dish also came with fries and mayo. I've had ketchup and mayo for fry sauce, but with mayo it isn't bad either. Chocolate Mousse (Dessert) - Finally for dessert, one dessert caught our eyes and that was this, the Chocolate Mousse. It came with some fruit on top and topped off with a piece of mint. This was good as well. I like desserts that aren't too sweet and this wasn't so it was welcomed. I think when it comes to mousse it tends to not be too sweet so I think from now on it's something that I'll keep my eye on. Overall, the food was great, the atmosphere as well, I think this place is a definite place to check out at least if you've never had Belgian food and want to try something new. I do have to say that this place is probably for those who are really into seafood or don't mind trying something adventurous. I'm a foodie, so I keep an open mind to everything I eat. My date and I are just leaving Belga Cafe. The worst service ever. We were served by Omar A. He was blunt and rude to start. We placed our food order and when my dates arrived, my sandwich came out incorrectly with American cheese on it (that's the only cheese they have... weird). I hate American cheese. Long story short they took back my sandwich and then my date and I realized we still didn't receive our side of eggs. When Omar returned, we told him about the missing eggs on the side. He was apologetic and blamed the kitchen. Fast forward, half way through my dates skillet hash brown with steak tips, she realized she was missing Brussels sprouts in her food. We just kept eating. Towards the end we told the Manager, Fabian (tall, skinny and black) who was floating around. He seemed slightly apolitically about the missing Brussels sprouts but didn't really care. We also told him about the late eggs on the side and American cheese on my sandwich. He said he thought we placed the side of eggs late accordingly to our server (untrue). Fabian said he will remove the eggs on the side though and that was it. We told him about our overall poor service. Fabian said "I'll see what I can do." When the bill came, nothing was done. Instead Fabian dropped off mimosa which neither of us drank at all nor did we ask for. The bill also came with automatic 20% gratuity on it for a party of two - haha! I guess they figured we weren't going to tip? We'll that's not a smart business move for customers who already expressed poor customer service. The food was mediocre and the service was worst. Not worth the price. Oh yea, I was also told that a side of Hollondaise sauce would be $4 (c'mon guys). read more

I went with a group of friends and the place was completely packed on a sunday. It was worth the wait. I had something that resembled an eggs benedict with salmon. It was superb. We had a ice cream and waffles for desert and it was equally impressive. I wish I lived in DC so I could continue going back here. Alas. I had lunch with a chef friend recently. I was impressed by the variety of beers they have. This restaurant has 125 different kind of Belgian beer. Is that correct or did I misunderstand what Chef Vandaele told us? Anyway, you should try a Belgian beer called "Duvel". It has its own glass for it and the glass has a small carved hole in the bottom which keeps making kind of bubbles that floats to to the surface of the beer. Well it is difficult to explain but if you order it, maybe the waiter will show you. Other than the beer, I was also impressed with the fois gras. I had High hopes for this dessert menu. This review was not inclusive to their dinner or brunch. After completing a delicious meal up the street, a friend and I were looking for something savory and sweet. The Belgian waffle ice cream sandwich and the profiterole dessert looked enticing... Let me just say that both of these desserts or something you could not pay me to eat. The Waffle was dense gritty and most likely frozen. The profiteroles were chewy and probably previously frozen as well. The chocolate sauce which came in the container was not a smooth chocolate it was not hot or cold and probably came out of a can. Lastly the ice coffee which was four dollars, was probably hot coffee poured over ice which tasted watery and over brewed. I wish I had something positive to say, but even the patrons at the bar were not friendly, this is not a place I will be attempting to eat dinner at or brunch especially based off of this last experience. Does Eastern Market really have delicious Pizza, Vietnamese, Greek, Japanese, AND Belgian dining options? Why yes. It's official - all of my dining cravings can now be satiated within walking distance from my house. (Insert heart eyes here). I really love mussels, whether dining out or making at home. Give me a big pot of mussels with a savory broth and crispy french fries and I'm sold! We visited Belga Cafe on a Sunday, and there were perhaps 4 other tables occupied. Thus, we didn't run into any of the service problems that the previous yelpers had noted. I ordered the Mussels Truffels en Prei, which is prepared with leeks, truffles, spicy sausage, and red onions in a broth of Stella beer. It was DELICIOUS - perfect for a winter night - and even more perfect to dip your fries in. I must warn you though that I thought the dish was a tad too salty, which says a lot because I tend to eat salty in the first place. I think you might want to opt for other mussel dishes if you cannot handle the salt level. Nonetheless, I actually ended up taking the leftover broth home to make a second meal (shrimp linguine in mussel broth = yum). My company ordered the Green mussels and the Diabolique mussels, both were very well received and devoured. We also checked-in in Yelp and received a free Endirve Tart. That was quite an experience, and I must say that we enjoyed trying to decipher the different flavors (though we really just enjoyed the coffee ice cream). I came here because I saw a Liege waffle on the menu... and the mixed reviews almost deterred me... and the poor reviews for the Liege specifically almost made me order something else. So glad I went with my gut! We came and I got the Liege with a side of bacon and we both got the Belgian Hot Chocolate and he got the banana waffle. Everything was delicious. The bacon was enough for two people. He got his Hot Cocoa with Baileys which was better than mine. My waffle was not too sweet, it was perfect. He envied it a bit, though he did like the mix of flavors in his banana waffle (bananas, berries, cream, bacon, rum). All in all, would come back in a heartbeat. Nice vibe and interior as well. No complaints. Update: okay one complaint... two bathroom stalls, both coed... and that is it for the whole place. Both times I went I had to wait, kind of a pain. Personally, I enjoy going to places where what's on the menu is typically something I wouldn't cook, and Belga is just on the good side of that. The French toast had a waffle like feel and no need for syrup. My companion had the B&W Waffles. We shared Jamaican Jerked bacon and both had a side of eggs. She had the Americano and I started with a Beglian Coffee. All a bit pricey but worth the charm...all the way down to the fleece provided to keep people closet to the front door warm. Solid brunch spot. Originally tried to go to Ted's Bulletin across the street (which is fantastic and you must try it if you can!), but the wait was about 2hrs so we decided to try here instead. Definitely not disappointed! Food was great! We stuck to some of their specialities: - Mais Waffles: cornbread waffle with pulled pork, avocado, and two fried eggs on top. Delicious and super tasty with all the different pieces. The pulled pork was not super flavorful, but paired well with the egg and cornbread waffle. Kinda messy to eat because there are so many parts, but super filling and would definitely get again. - Wentelteefjes: basically like waffle French toast with creme brûlée foam. Amazing! The creme brûlée tasted like heavier whipped cream was great. Definitely try this if you are in the mood for sweets - Quiche: this was my favorite! If you don't want to wait in line for Teds Bulletin, located across the street, Belga is a great alternative. This is my second time coming and I haven't been disappointed. The food is unique and consistently tasty. I had fried quail and cheddar waffles today (sorry no picture) and it was amazing. The hanger steak and fried eggs are great as well. I have always sat at the bar, the space is small so the wait can be a little long. The staff are nice and the food comes out quickly. The only thing I wish they had is bottomless mimosas.
