I called in for a foot-long cheesesteak and what I received was a 6 inch cheesesteak where the cheese was barely melted, the meat was overcooked or freezer burned, and the bread was stale. In addition, when I stepped up to the counter to pay for my call-in order, the cashier handed me the sandwich then took three phone orders prior to taking payment. I will not be returning. read more

This review is for the Eggplant Parmesan, which was good, but could have been a bit better. The eggplant was sliced nice and thin, had great flavor, but had mushy breading. The breading yo eggplant ratio was good, but it wasn't crispy like I've had at other places. The sauce and cheese were superb, but I was really surprised by how delicious the whole wheat hero roll was! I don't know what bread they're using, but it was very fresh and soft. I liked the option to get a combo upgrade for $2 more, which came with a small fountain drink, bag of chips, and a homemade chocolate chip cookie. You can get the upgrade on Mondays and Tuesdays for only $1! I love that they have Big Red on tap. They have a really extensive selection of NY style hot and cold subs, wraps abs hot dogs, so there's something for everyone. I'd like to see them add a gluten-free option. They were both excellent, especially with the homemade Italian dressing! We also got the combos (drink, chips, and a cookie); the peanut butter cookie is seriously one of the best I've had! Just awesome. A friend took me here for lunch, as it wasn't too far from his office. I don't get out this way much, and the outside and surrounding area looks pretty run down. The inside was nothing special either, but then -oh, the food!! One of the best sandwiches I've had in Austin. The friendly staff behind the counter took my order for the Uncle Ira's Reuben, and it came out delicious and perfect in every way. Tender, flavorful corned beef, sauerkraut, Russian dressing, and wonderfully grilled rye. I could tell right away that it was a multi-napkin affair. My friend got the pastrami burger, and it looked like a deli dream. I can't wait to come back and try other items on the menu (especially with some of the other Yelp reviews). I thankfully work right down the street from Bella Donna's and frequent them for lunch. They have an extensive menu and I haven't had anything I didn't like yet. My favorites are their muffaleta, blt (it has avocado on it) and their Italian wrap on a spinach tortilla. The cheesesteak is also good, pretty messy though. They also have a decent antipasta salad and are not stingy with their dressing, speaking of which, their Italian dressing is great on everything! My drawbacks are the lack of consistency with the way the sandwiches are sloppily made sometimes, the utter lack of parking, which I get, they're popular, and the fact that they aren't open on the weekends. read more

It's a little hole in the wall place and once you walk in (during prime time lunch time) you'll see why they have such good feedback online. I am totally rooting for these folks. This is a plain ordinary lunch joint stuck in the industrial/warehouse district south of Ben White and East of I-35. It's lunch. However, Bella Donna is trying to make itself into a classy "international" place. International in this case means all the good food that the United States has that you can't get in Central America. Jewish style delicatessen. East Coast style Italian subs. Classic American sandwiches like the BLT and New York style Hot Dogs. You can feel the sincerity of the owner's ambitions. There are lots of pictures of charming Parisian and Italian street scenes on the wall. Farther back, they have hung a big American flag and another big Italian flag. There is a map of Italy on the wall - and Bella Donna calls itself an Italian deli. There is also a Bible on the wall, and a copy of the Ten Commandments. There is a poster-size long personal reaffirmation of Jesus. They take their morality seriously at Bella Donna and they want to let the rest of the world know how serious they are about their commitment to the path of light. But underneath the "lets make a great US/Italian restaurant" is a Central American cooking sensibility. This leads to their own decided angle to the recipes. These angles are good ones. I could have gotten an Italian hero, or a pastrami sandwich or an eggplant parmesan sub; those were all attractive options. But you can often tell the stuff a kitchen is made of by seeing how they handle the "other" dishes on their menu that aren't the specialties. They had BLT on the menu. BLT is hard to do anything special with. Take bacon, put it on whole wheat with lettuce and tomato. What's the big deal? The cook found a way to put his own personal touch on to the BLT. First, he added avocado ... a good idea which totally blends with the other flavors. Secondly, every table has both tabasco sauce and green habanero sauce. (Not exactly what they feature at the Stage Deli or at a Natick sub shop.) The avocado and the habanero sauce totally made the sandwich. (The cook also provided a plastic dipping cup with Italian dressing. Not a standard item with a BLT, but this would have been good too.) Frankly, this is EXACTLY the kind of place I like to go if I am ordering lunch every day. There is a lot of variety on the menu, the food is good and the place has its own decided personality. This is a new discovery near my office. It is not a conventional sub shop - kind of a different feel, although they do all the subs pretty great. I am particularly excited by the NY deli offerings, considering the lack of such in Austin. Consider Ira's Rueben: Grilled marbled rye, piled with hot corned beef, sauerkraut, and melted swiss cheese with Russian dressing. Yummmmmmmmy Also - hot pastrami, NY hot dogs, and stuff that puts Katz's to shame. I have to say that eating a hot pastrami on rye in a, lets say, distinctly non-Jewish environment, is slightly culturally confusing, but no less delicious. Also great Chicago beef sandwiches and muffalettas and lots of downright great stuff here. No to-go menus, no website so its hard to do phone orders, but they have a whole wall full of delicious menu items, with drool-worthy pics. I want to try the veggie special which has 3 kinds of cheese, artichoke hearts, grilled eggplant, etc. Others swear by the hamburgers, but -- with all that Italian coldcut goodness, why? why? This place and Marianna's just up the road are hidden gems on Burleson. When I worked out here we would get the sandwiches for lunch. They are all good. I have had 3 different sandwiches and the cheeseburger and it was all consistently good. The Philly is really good. My personal favorite is the Amore Hero that is a cold Italian sub consisting of ham, pepperoni, prosciutto, provolone cheese, & green olives, although I take the olives off. There is nothing different about the cheeseburger except its really greasy and really good. The service is good but the hours are short, pretty much catering to the working crowd of the area. I usually try to eat outside the airport before/after my flight. Since they only open until 4PM and closes on weekends, I didn't try this place until today after I landed around 1PM on Monday. The place is kind divey, about 5 miles from the airport, and right before HW35 on my way back to San Antonio. I ordered the Southwest steak on wheat, it is messy to eat, but very delicious, and it hits the spot after a long flight. The combo (small drink and a cookie) costs about $8.41 and totally worth it. This hidden gem has some of our favorite food in Austin. We usually call in before 11a or after 1p because lunchtime is busy inside and parking. My husband always get the Flying Turkey sub. I switch between the cheesesteak, sicilian wrap (the eggplant is so good), grilled catfish, Italian sausage (I'm from Chicago so fussy about my sausage), oriental chicken salad, Uncle Ira's, a burger, even more.
