I've been to local foods twice and both times the food is fresh, the atmosphere is clean with good vibes, and I leave with a happy belly to wrap it up. The first time I came the line for lunch was long and took a little while to get our food about 30mins. This second time I came in we were able to walk right in and order our food! The cashier was friendly and quick. For my vegetarians this place has food that is healthy, vegetables heavy AND DOESN'T lack flavor. I loved this place a long time ago but there are a few things I need to comment on which justifies the change of my opinion. Let me say first that the actual mains are the star of the show. The sandwiches and wraps and whatever actual main you pick WILL BE really good. I haven't had a bad main here since the beginning of coming here. I love all of the sandwiches and will insist that people try all of their versions. The breakfast plates are delicious and they have an extensive menu. However, you cannot completely ignore everything that is supposed to come with it. The sides are very lackluster and sometimes flavorless. The soup can be very watery and off-tasting. The additional sausage ordered during brunch time is not the best. Most of the sides are cold and prepared well in advance to probably ensure a quicker turn around time, but it's pretty obvious. I don't mind cold sides at ALL, but they are nothing to write home about and sometimes skippable altogether. Some of the drinks are pretty bad. This is also probably some of the worst matcha I've had in all of Austin, and that's saying something considering 95% of the ones I've tried in this city is outright bad. It's off, oxidized, extremely watering, flavorless of the matcha flavor but strong on a stagnant rainwater taste. Lucky charms in it just made it worse. The coffee is also poorly made. Stick with bringing your own water. Definitely go for the main sandwiches which are a knock out of the park for me, but don't bother with comboing it. At the very least, service is great! All around nice people, beautiful and airy space, and fast cleanup. read more

I've always been a consistent fan of Local Foods ever since they opened up in downtown and a couple years later, I still come to this establishment whenever I'm craving a healthy, delicious sandwich! My go-to menu item to this day is still their Crunchy Chicken Sandwich, which comes with oven roasted chicken on top of a pretzel bun (which adds a unique and refreshing texture to the sandwich!). What makes the sandwich "crunchy" is the fact that they layer crushed homemade chips into the sandwich, giving you that subtle crunch that you might be craving in a typical fried chicken sandwich. There is plenty of dining space inside if you end up eating here (there's a mini outdoor dining area along with a second floor inside), and they validate parking as well! I'd refer to their website for the two parking garages that they partner with (one is directly attached to the building) because depending on the time of day, you may need to park in one garage over the other if you want the parking validation. read more

I am a huge fam of a sour-ish flavor profile, so it was a hit for me. I had never tried a escabeche before, but it is pickled vegetables. This was refreshing! However I think I ordered too much sour foods since my mouth felt a bit numb after eating this and the sammie together. The potato salad was delicious! I love how they incorporated red potatoes with the skin still on it, which added a nice pop of color. It was creamy and a generous portion. I had a sore throat that day, so I got some hot hibiscus tea as my beverage to pair with my taco salad, which came with kale (TONS of it), romaine, vegan housemade taco meat, avocado, tomato, kidney bean, pickled onion, jicama, pumpkin seed, grilled corn, El Milagro corn tortilla bowl, and lemon vinaigrette. The salad was HUGE and I definitely left plenty of kale behind, even though the portion I did have was filling! I appreciated the crispy corn tortilla bowl, but it definitely felt like I was eating two separate dishes, as it didn't feel like the vegan taco meat and corn tortilla bowl were really mixed in with all the other salad contents. Another plus is that Local Foods provides 90 min of validated parking at the City Hall Parking Garage (anytime, any day) OR 2hr validation at the 2nd St AMLI garage (M-F ONLY, 8 am - 5 pm). We parked at the City Hall garage since it was a Saturday. Given that parking is notoriously difficult downtown, this was helpful - just keep the time limit in mind. Lil' Nasty Breakfast Sandwich ($13.50, 5/5) - Very delicious and satisfying! Definitely hit the spot for brunch. - Combination of eggs, crispy bacon, cheddar cheese, roasted poblano & house sambal paired well with the potatoes, which were very flavorful.
