This place epitomizes the old school Main St. Medford vibe. It has been a staple on the strip that includes Bob's, Lacasias, etc. for longer than I've been alive. My first time buying pasta here. The fact that the pasta is frozen is already off putting. But my husband was charmed by the family business vibe and I have been looking for a good place to buy fresh pasta. So, we decided to try. Once home, I cooked the ravioli. On the first bite, I realized that the ravioli seemed to be made from highly processed flour or dough. My husband, who has a sensitive stomach and cannot tolerate supermarket pizza or other highly processed foods, was in his way to the bathroom after a few ravioli. I recently had to explain to someone what is a "pasta bakery". It took like 10 minutes and then I just showed them Bella. One could call this place old-school, nostalgic, etc., but what it is to me is an enduring labor of love to consistently creating perfect fresh pasta. Always grateful to find fresh pasta shops and support small local businesses. Cash only place and all bags are sold by a pound. I do wish that they have 1/2 bags options because fresh pasta can go bad quickly. And I want to try all varieties. At $4.50 a bag, I can make a pasta meal for six hungry family members. My family has been purchasing Bellas' pasta products for at least 25-30 years. They are the closest in taste we've found to our Nonnas and my Moms (who learned from our Nonna) in every category. The store name is beautiful. The staff is helpful and friendly. The store is close to my home. The ravioli are okay, but not exceptional. Their sauces - better not. I'll go to Bella for ravioli if I don't want to drive to Russo's in Watertown. I especially like their mushroom ravioli which are great for Alfredo sauce. Lazy me, I didn't feel like making sauce and bought a container of Alfredo sauce from Bella, which was a real disappointment. It was watery and tasteless and leftovers went into the trash. Bella Ravioli was a staple for holidays and Sunday dinners at nana's house when I was a kid. The spinach ravioli was my absolute favorite. There are two fresh pasta stores within walking distance of my apartment (in the Davis Square area). Bella is one, the other is, well, we all know what the other is. This is a small, unassuming shop in Medford's North End/Italian ghetto. They sell a variety of pastas. Some frozen, some not. You may be put off by how all their raviolis are frozen. Don't be. This way their centers don't get soggy, unlike those from a pasta shop that shall not be named. Their pumpkin ravioli are good (though I wish they were more liquidy). Their eggplant ravioli are awesome. Gnocchi are great (but then again, I'm a complete gnocchi whore). Prices are very competitive, way better than the North End (where they often disguise their high prices by pricing by the half pound, instead of by the pound) and I think better than the shop that shall not be named. Note that I no longer know how much anything costs at the shop that shall not be named - I don't think I've set foot in there since I found Bella Ravioli. These are some of the best fresh made raviolis that I have ever had! Often times I come in and they are making the spinach raviolis fresh. I recommend picking up a box of whatever is fresh and then perhaps a bag of Gnocchi and some smaller frozen lobster Ravs. The service is extremely friendly in this family run business. Make sure you ask plenty of questions so you find out when they are making the next fresh items and they will also give you tips on preparation. It came up but wasn't cooked. 10 min later, still not cooked. 15 min later. Not cooked My mom says where did you buy this ravioli that doesn't cook. Bella Ravioli. Va funculo bella ravioli she says. At 20 min it was still doughy but she said we got 30 people waiting to eat but tell them these are not mine. You bought them. We made a white cream sauce that gave it a great flavor but honestly it's thick, tasteless dough. With very little lobster filling. My mom thinks they forgot eggs in the dough. Next year. She says. The owner and his wife have been behind the counter every time I've been in and always take the time to chat with me. After my first visit I felt like I'd known them my entire life. Not sure what sauce goes with pumpkin ravioli? Just ask and you will get a quick sauce recipe that pairs perfectly. Parking is no problem, but getting out of the space kind of sucks especially during rush hour. The owner of the store actually came out and stopped traffic for me one day so that I could leave. Growing up in an Italian home nothing compares to fresh homemade pasta. However, Bella comes close. The family that runs the places is amazing and nice. They are such outgoing and friendly people. I have lived right around the corner from this place for about a year and a half now and only finally managed to venture over during business hours. All of the ravioli (and tortellini) is fresh made on the premises. I went at about mid-day on a Sunday and there were 3 people in the back making fresh pasta. They had many, many kinds to choose from; from cheese to vegetable-filled to meat-filled, tons of choices! We ended up getting 1 order of spinach ravioli and 1 order of mini cheese ravioli. The total was like $9 for both. They gave us clear directions for how to take it home and cook it (not that it's difficult...3-4 minutes max in boiling salted water) and when we cooked it up later that night, it was DELICIOUS. They also had sauce for sale but we didn't pick that up, might be worth a try next time! Great pasta, great price, independently owned and runned...maybe a little off the beaten path for some people but this place is great! Thanks to yelp for turning me on to this store. It is convenient and nice to have a fresh pasta dinner when you don't feel like cooking. Prices are competitive, they have gnocchi as well as ravioli. Tried the frozen mushroom ravioli which was delicious on its own, and the cheese, which was fresh and needed a sauce because on its own it was a little bland. They were helpful and patient with my decision-making, and nicely told me how to cook it and how to freeze any unused portions, even though they probably answer those same questions dozens of times every day. There is an atm in the convenience store across the street, which you need because this is a cash-only business. Not only is the pasta freshly made and delicious, the owner is super nice and helpful even when I was asking tons of questions on how to use lasagna sheets (how many needed, should I precook before assembly).
