Vegan pepperoni is just one of many vegan topping options. Not pictured: Impossible steak and cheese

Catalina's is a no-frills pizza and sub shop tucked away off of Main St. in Malden. The cache for Catalina's is the abundance of vegetarian and vegan options on the menu. From Impossible beef, sausage, chicken, and Beyond pepperoni, Catalina's can be creative when putting together combinations on pizzas, calzones, or sandwiches. Their strength lies with the sandwich menu, offering soft rolls with tasty toppings. The Impossible steak and cheese is a personal favorite and well-seasoned. I'm eager to try the Impossible chicken Parm next. Catalina's is far from perfect and their pizza is niche (a sweeter/spiced red sauce isn't for everyone), the internal dining space could be more inviting (this place does more takeout), and the parking can be dicy. That said, it's a gem for vegetarians and vegans alike looking for that comfort sandwich fix.

    Cold Veggie Sub

This meal would be rated a 1 but because this is the first negative experience I have had with this restaurant I am giving them a 3. I was having a rough day and looking forward to getting home, putting my feet up and getting some takeout. I selected a cold veggie sub and asked for "mayo, lettuce, tomato, extra pickles, extra onions and salt & pepper". What I got was a little bit of tomato, pickle and onion w/s&p no lettuce. Due to the lack of meat I fully expect a veggie sub to be FILLED with veggies. This is not a meal and the fact that someone felt ok to serve this and had the audacity to charge me $11 for it is quite concerning. I was so happy to recently find this restaurant as a vegetarian it is hard to find places with not only plant based options but TONS of options. In all honesty I will probably order from them again but I will never order something I haven't already had and I certainly would never order a "sub" from them again. Because I was so appalled that the restaurant felt it ok to serve this to someone, I felt I needed to leave this review as a learning. Note to the restaurant: Please don't ever serve this to someone again.

First off let's talk about taste. The food here is fresh and home cooked recipes clearly. It's given love and careful thought. The passion is there. Don't believe me? Try the samosas. Also they are so inexpensive. I would get two orders. The vegan options are large and taste amazing. They are working to add more and happily take feedback to better their menu. You want vegan, ask for vegan pizza cheese and enjoy the best pizza in the city. After a long day of skating and exercise this place is just the thing for ravenous hunger! The menu is massive and expanding daily it seems. If they have the ingredients, they will make it. Vegan chicken parm calzone/pizza? Done. Vegan meatball sub? Vegan buffalo chicken salad with vegan ranch? Yeah they got it. I love this place and you will too. Now excuse me while I get my vegan meatball sub and vegan cheesy breadsticks.

Very average place. Probably not coming back unless nothing else to eat. I had the steak and cheese. Steak was dry.

Picked the Salsiccia pizza to split between us (and a poached pear and cannoli for dessert). First, the atmosphere is great! Inviting, with great views of Ball Square and the amazing pizza oven. The pizza arrived at the perfect temperature and quickly (we learned later that a pizza spends less than couple minutes in the oven due to how blisteringly hot it gets). Great flavor and composition to the pizza -- the sausage was extremely flavorful and there was just enough cheese. The dough is top notch, with just the right amount of chew! The poached pear and cannoli were excellent. Not too sweet with sufficient complexity. Very, very nice. My fiancé chatted with the staff and learned more about the location and the pizza oven (I mean, it's just too cool to not ask to see more closely). Great service, fantastic food. Will certainly return and I now feel remiss that we hadn't yet been.

The spicy sausage pizza was excellent, the dough is homemade and tastes incredibly fresh. The toppings are fresh as well, which really comes through in the flavor. I honestly can't think of another restaurant that captures the essence of Northern Italian cuisine at this level. Every single dish we ordered was exceptional. My advice: go family-style so you can share and experience as much of the menu as possible. The tortellini was outstanding, the pasta with the brandy cream sauce was unforgettable, and the short rib was absolutely phenomenal. Not a single dish missed, and there wasn't one thing we wouldn't order again. To top it all off, the chef came over to our table at the end of the meal to say hello--a thoughtful touch that made an already incredible experience even more memorable. I would put this restaurant up against anything I've had in Italy, and without question, it's the best Italian restaurant in the Boston area. The most surprising part? It's in Woburn, not the North End. 10/10. An unforgettable dining experience

The atmosphere is cozy and intimate, so it's a great place for date night. The Fantastic: 1. Service -- our waiter was amazing, he took great care of us. We wanted for nothing! 2. Tortellini Alla Norcina -- this was delish. It was creamy, a little funky, and the pasta was cooked perfectly. 3. Cacio e Pepe -- also delish. 4. Mussels -- perfectly cooked, big and plump, and the bread to sop up the broth was also yummy. The plates are beautiful, but I think that plating and presentation takes priority over the food sometimes: 1. Bruschetta -- this was supposed to come with a balsamic drizzle, but it was served on a wooden plate and the drizzle was tiny and thin, so there wasn't really any balsamic. The dish could have used it to help cut through the cheese. 2. Bombolone -- dry, there was not a lot of custard in the pastry, and the surrounding sauces were more decorative than helpful. We did not enjoy the mixed drinks, they were all on the sour side and watery. So I would stick with wine or beer, the wine we had was excellent. Overall, we had a really nice time and would return.

We closed with the Nutella pizza which I've had at numerous other restaurants and Ciao's was hands down the best ever. Make sure to save room for this... seriously. The old space felt warm, charming, and welcoming, and the food was consistently great. Since the move, we've tried giving the new location a fair chance and have visited three times. Unfortunately, the overall experience just hasn't been the same. The atmosphere feels much more corporate and lacks the warmth and character that made the original location special. Several menu items have changed, prices have increased significantly, and the food hasn't been as memorable as it once was. The biggest disappointment has been the service. During our most recent visit on a Friday night while my sister was in town, the service was noticeably poor. It felt like our server was simply going through the motions and didn't want to be there. Everyone has off days, but when you're paying premium prices for a night out, you expect at least a friendly and attentive experience. We typically enjoy supporting restaurants and are happy to tip generously when the service reflects the experience. Unfortunately, this visit fell far short of expectations. After several attempts to give the new location a chance, we've decided this will likely be our last visit. It's disappointing because we genuinely loved Posto for many years and had hoped the new location would capture some of what made the original so special.

We were tired of being stuck in the house and tired of crappy delivery & wanted "real" food - not pizza shop food and decided despite how shytty all the delivery places have been with their practices of allowing the drivers to make multiple stops (great for the drivers - but lessens quality of food when they are making so many stops and yours is cold when you receive), I digress... we wanted real food we decided to take a chance. Mom asked for Clams Casino and who the hell even has them yet will deliver them - and sure enough we found this place - Had never heard of it before this night. Now I cant go anywhere without ordering a little bit of everything for reference, then I take 2 bites am full and then leave in the fridge for a week & then throw away, I know - not a great practice, Its just how I get down... In addition to the Clams they actually had an artichoke on the menu, you dont find them in too many places so we stocked up on all the things. OMG to start all the food was still hot, not even just warm, but hot... Portions are the Biggest, but I mean we had more than enough food. The Clams were good, Great actually, the artichoke - can you see the size of it - INSANE!!! The stuffed mushrooms were tasty but like tiny, so I could take them or leave them. next time... But tasty! THe Pizza wasnt the hottest actually and I think if it was like a tad bit warmer it would have been a 9.4 (Go Prez), but even less than hot it was GOOOOOD!!!! The pasta was good, the chicken was so flavorful and Broccoli Rabe is like my jam, and the fact that I could swap out the pasta type & broccoli type literally had me quite excited... Skip the Garlic bread! Will DEFINITELY be adding this place to the regular rotation, it was so good and will also be stopping in to try in person!

We were immediately seated and throughout the night, service was excellent. The restaurant space is a little tight so you may overhear your neighbor's conversation but there is a lovely open kitchen in the back where you can watch the chefs work together in symphony. We started with the Spanish octopus ($22) which we loved so much, we ordered a second of, as well as the ricotta stuffed squash blossoms ($19). The octopus was incredibly tender and plump and had a Galician flavor with the potatoes and grilled peppers. The squash blossoms were delicately fried with a light and crispy tempura batter and the tomato marmalade on the bottom provided a nice sweet-tartness to the dish overall. For our entrées, we tried the duck breast ($29), roasted gem clams ($27), pappardelle ($29), and the ravioli doppio ($28), the last of which was my favorite dish of the evening. The duck was well seared and the umami of the mushrooms contrasted with the sweet and tart agrodolce sauce, keeping the overall dish from being too heavy. The gem clams were a tad too savory for my preference, especially with the shavings of bonito flakes. We were given the choice of pairing the clams with bread or pasta and I would definitely recommend going with the latter to help dilute the brininess of the dish. The pappardelle had a lovely al dente chew and the braised lamb shoulder and fava beans lended the dish a very spring-forward vibe, which complimented the ravioli doppio with a duo filling of peas and ricotta, finished in a basil butter sauce. Overall, I really enjoyed my dining experience at Little Sage and I love how in tune the menu is with seasonal produce available. I would love to return to try their other offerings, including the lobster gnocchi which I noticed a lot of tables ordered. The staff was also very accommodating for my tree nut allergy-- the pesto is nut-free and all dishes that do have nuts are used as garnishes and can be removed if desired.
