When visiting Columbus, I always seem to find myself making excuses to visit the Tensuke shopping center, mainly for the Belle bakery. To put it bluntly, I am 100% obsessed with their tiramisu cake. It's the Japanese version of the dessert, and I was so desperate to have a slice that I bought their entire cake today. That's right. The whole cake. And I have no shame. I tried to roll my face in the cake box when we got to my car but my mom stopped me, citing the fact that I'd get all sticky and that my husband would probably divorce me if I came home with cake face. Personally, I think she just wanted a slice and didn't want me to ruin the cake. So out came the self control and I managed to adult the entire way home. This bakery has become the go to spot for birthday cakes for my family. The crowd pleaser is always the white chocolate raspberry. Light, fluffy, tart, and sweet. Their puff pastries are really well done as well. Be aware, much of the matcha cakes and pastries also have red bean in them. I'm not a huge red bean fan personally but I love matcha so I've been surprised a couple times. Everything is amazing though. Be aware though if you've never been to a Japanese bakery before, the cakes and sweet pastries aren't very sweet. You won't find super sugary buttercream on anything but that lack of super sweet flavor allows other flavors to shine which I appreciate. read more

There is so much I like about Belle's Bread, and there is nothing I don't like. I was introduced to this Japanese French bakery by way of the MANGO MOUSSE CAKE I ate at an international pot luck. The cake was on the short list of memorable eats which led me to Belle's. Belle's is tucked away in a corner of the Kenny center plaza. There are other bakeries there, so be careful not to end up at the wrong place! Once inside you will see it is more than a bakery. In addition to the wonderful desserts and diverse bread offerings, they have a small kitchen for lunch service. The desserts include tiramisu, strawberry cake, raspberry white chocolate mousse, matcha cake and red bean tart. They have a soft ice cream machine; the green tea flavor is my favorite. I have to admit i like green tea anything. The green tea bread is amazing. I would recommend coming here to buy French bread and croissants rather than from the tired chain grocery stores. I have to say that the service is impeccable. The wait staff are patient, informative and very courteous. They are very efficient at waiting on customers. If you arrive at a time when the line is very long, don't worry it will go fast. This is a very inexpensive and pleasant place to have lunch. They are located in the Kenny Centre Mall, which also houses Tensuke Japanese market and Akai Hana Japanese restaurant. Pretty much the Little Japan of Columbus and a one-stop shop for all things Japanese. Their individually wrapped baked goods are very attractive. I've tried their frank (hot dog) roll and their red bean bun. The tastiness matches their tantalizing appearance. I haven't had a chance to try their hot dishes, but I will definitely do so soon. Their Rice Omelet and Spaghetti dishes look amazing! They also have an assortment of pre-packaged sandwiches. Normally i'm not a fan of pre-made refrigerated sandwiches, but these are the exception. I picked up a pork tenderloin (hire katsu ヒレカツ) sandwich for $3.75. Even though the sandwich was cold, the breaded pork had good crunchiness and the sweet katsu sauce was a great finishing touch. YUM! By far the best bakery in town! My husband and I always come here after eating at Tensuke Express to pick up some Japanese bread and soft serve ice cream. All of their breads are amazing and super soft! It's difficult to have self-control when selecting which ones we want to buy and take home. We absolutely love the green tea soft serve ice cream! It tastes exactly the same as what we had in Japan! If you are thinking of coming here, you must get that! It is amazing if you love the taste of matcha! So I have been on the hunt for the perfect bakery and I think I might have found it!!! Couple of my friends bought Tiramisu cake for my bday from this place, knowing I am picky when it comes to the perfect Tiramisu. I have to say this place has as it as close as it gets. It was the perfect sweetness with a hint of the bitter cocoa powder that makes a Tiramisu - Tiramisu! Just mouth watering delicious!! I was highly impressed by this place. It's settled within the Tensuke Market shopping center, which is comprised of Japanese merchandise and food. They had matcha, red bean, and pumpkin dessert rolls. You're typical red bean buns, Japanese bread, etc. Not to mention shaved ice with ice cream and matcha floats as well. So I just came here for the coffee and madeleines!! Oh and they had macaroons as well so I couldn't help myself so I thought it would be ok to indulge for the weekend. I usually get regular madeleines to dip into my coffee because they always work so well together but since they had lemon madeleines in, I decided to try something different. My husband and I love to eat savory sweet bakery after a well deserving meal so we chose this one since it was on our way to get boba. The macaroons were delicious!!! When I first held it, it was firm enough that it didn't crush but as soon as you bite down, it had the perfect amount of fluff and flavor! The flavor was spread evenly with every single bite. I've always admired people who make these heavenly snack because it is truly super hard to make!!! The lemon madeleines were so amazing moist and tart! It was very similar to a lemon pound cake in my opinion. I honestly had to have some self control while eating it because they provide 4 madeleines in a package. I began eating one just to try it out but stopped at 2 because my husband shoved the other two in his mouth. (Yes they are that good!) My friend ordered the shaved ice with fruit which looked delicious but I was honestly way too full from a day of food adventures that I couldn't even make room to eat anymore. I can't believe I didn't know the existence of this bakery until recently. It is located in a convenient plaza with other Japanese establishments and was quite busy when I went on a Saturday evening. There are plenty of seats available if you wish to dine in. The savory buns and sweet pastries are very affordable. I had a difficult time choosing what to get because I wanted everything. I decided on a huge matcha cream puff which had plenty of cream on the inside. My friend let me taste her flan which was delicious, but too sweet for me. Definitely a different taste than the French and Austrian or American bakeries I'm used to. It was packed but the line moved quickly. Colorful cakes, pastries, drinks and ice creams are on display. Breads, sandwiches and rolls are also available to purchase, baked fresh on site. We purchased a coffee roll, an eclair cream puff and a fruit tart. From what I can tell, Japanese sweets are much milder than their European counterparts. The fillings are more of a whipped cream than a custard or buttercream. The cake is very light, dry, and fluffy but not quite a bread. Many items feature machta/green tea flavoring, including soft serve ice cream. My son is already begging to go back and get more fruit tarts. I want to try the strawberry cake, which I'm pretty sure is a signature item. read more

If you haven't gone here yet, what are you waiting for? You may have thought you had the best red bean paste bun in the US, but until you've had the ones here, you're absolutely wrong. Everything about this bakery is amazing. It's clean, easy to navigate, and has a great variety of breads and pastries. The combination of Japanese and French influences mean that there isn't a single item here that doesn't taste delicious. Belle's was recommended to me by a friend who loves the place so much she will drive 2+ hours just to pick up some of their buns (and when we were here, she ordered two dozen so she had enough to give out to all her friends and family). I got two red bean paste buns which were out of this world and honestly the best red bean paste buns I've ever tried (they will blow your mind), the fruit tart which was fresh, creamy and sumptuous, the custard cream roll, cheese dome, and strawberry buttercream roll. Aside from the red bean paste bun, I recommend the fruit tart and the strawberry buttercream roll the most. The roll is adorably in the shape of a little bear and the strawberry buttercream is sweet, creamy and very tasty. Everything is so fresh and homemade and the staff are incredibly nice! You simply can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I'll definitely be back for more even though I live out of town. read more

I had a coffee and as for pastries, I split a green tea cream puff and a slice of mango mousse cake. The green tea cream puff was delightful; the cream was the right amount of sweet, and honestly, I could eat just a nice, big bowl of just the green tea cream filling. The mango mousse cake was sweeter but still light and fluffy, with just a little bit of sponge on the bottom to hold the mousse. We came to Belle's bread a few weeks ago for a cake for a friends graduation party. It was my first time at Belle's and it was busy, I perused around the store seeing what options are available and came across the pre wrapped pastry section. I didn't get anything from this section but it was nice to see other options. We ended up in line getting a 8" mango cake, which my girlfriend let me know the sweets here aren't as sweet as typical American desserts. We also ordered two vanilla soft serve cups as it was warm and ice cream sounded good. I love the whole Japanese Marketplace here, but Belle's Bread is really a stand-out. The help-yourself Japanese pastries come in many fascinating varieties, like a Curry Egg Bun and Alien Saucers. The best! We go to Belle's at least once a month for the thick-cut white bread (best, fluffiest toast of your life) and to pick up assorted cakes (my favorite is the Mont Blanc roll with chestnuts). The green tea shortbread are also wonderful - delicately crumbly with the excellent slightly bitter finish of green tea powder to round out the sweet butter cookie. The tradition of French-influenced Japanese bakeries is wonderful and rounds out the experience of the entire Japanese marketplace. Well I wrote a review for Tensuke, so I might as well get Belle's out of the way too. Been a customer for several years now. The best way to describe it, to me, would be the classic "French Bistro interpreted by way of Tokyo" motif you see in various forms of popular culture or conventional travel. The baked delicacies, as I think other reviewers have attested, are top-notch. The lesser sampled food options are also equally good, but the menu timing sometimes may make it difficult to appreciate if you're in a time crunch. The service level is, to put it mildly, exceptional. The staff deserve several accolades for their professionalism and demeanor. Even in the way your cards and receipts are returned and presented to you at the end of a transaction is indicative of a company run with true Japanese cultural professionalism and decorum. This is stuff that evokes memories of Japanese language and culture classes back when I was in college. I guess I just get a small semblance of joy in remembering, recognizing and appreciating those little nuances. The coffee is very, very good. I'm a particular slave to, if I'm recalling this correctly, a green-tea latte of sorts. Never thought I'd go for that but now it's my crack. Oh, and when the mood strikes, my wife and I bring a chocolate cake home. Because chocolate cake. And man....they make a good one. read more
