Our favorite restaurant in Abilene! We go every time we drive through. Very similar to Babe's in Dallas because the owners were friends. Roast chicken here is my fave, even though I would typically order fried. You get unlimited rolls and sides. I would also recommend requesting for a side of their Amarillo sauce. The only small suggestion I would give is to add toilet paper and paper towel holders in the women's restroom. read more

I'm tempted to give Belle's three stars, because flaws start to show up when you pick it apart, but I'm going with how I felt when I left, which was four stars. You don't find many family-style fried chicken places like this anymore. They're a fading American tradition. In addition to chicken, you'll find a first-rate chicken-fried steak, meatloaf, and chicken & dumplings. Just pick your meat--the sides are included and unlimited. By coincidence we had eaten fried chicken the night before, so we both went with the CFS. It was great. The spouse says it was the best ever. I'm not quite ready to go that far (I can still remember the CFS at the Houston Confederate House) but it was undeniably top-notch. It was a healthy slice of ribeye, and had been pounded or run thru a jaccard to tenderize it (or both--the shape and size definitely suggested pounding). It was battered, not breaded, and pan-fried, not deep-fried, nicely crisp but not crunchy. The crust was not big and puffy, or thick and bready. Which is to say that it was traditional and first-class. (Legend has it that CFS was created in Texas by German immigrants who were doing the best they could to emulate schnitzel. Keep that in mind before you embrace the deep-fried version with a thick, crunchy crust.) The mashed potatoes were country-style: not too lumpy, not too whipped and light. Nicely seasoned. They'll set up if you don't get after them. The cream gravy tasted swell on the CFS and potatoes, but when I gave it the finger-dip test I tasted a tad of flour and it seemed surprisingly mild. The veggies are probably what makes me consider a downgrade to three stars. They were canned, but I'm not sure that it would be reasonable to expect more from a place like this. To their credit, Belle's added smoky bacon, onions, and seasoning to the green beans, and I think they creamed their own canned corn. The "cream" is milk, which is correct, and it is lightly applied. Good execution. Creamed corn shouldn't be corn in cream gravy. But if they had fresh veggies, changing with the season? Now you're talking five stars. (Subsequent correction: Belle's, as swell as it is, shouldn't get five stars from me, because you have to leave room for truly exquisite dining experiences. The difficult question is whether you measure Belle's against other similar places, or whether you measure it against the universe of restaurants. I sort of do both and not quite either, which makes no sense, but it means that very, very few joints/dives/cafes can get five stars. Maybe Winstead's hamburgers thirty years ago; ditto Arthur Bryant's BBQ thirty years ago. Oops, I'm showing my KC roots.) The yeast rolls were exquisite. Traditional, big, yeasty, out of a muffin tin. Individual butter pats on the table. The trick is to eat only one. Can't tell you about the desserts. We were stuffed. But we took takeout of the banana pudding and the coconut pie, so we'll have an opinion soon. Good service, lots of management attention. Worth going out of your way to visit. read more

My buddy and I went here because I was in town for an interview and it was the only real restaurant that we ate at in Abilene. The staff is super friendly and will hold a conversation with you if you are so inclined. The thing that I love the most about this place is that it's family style. You order an entree and they have UNLIMITED creamed corn (OMG), mashed potatoes (OMG), green beans, and I forgot what else. When you sit down they give you some tasty bread as well. I ordered the chicken and dumplin's and my friend ordered the chicken fried steak. The chicken and dumplin's were the best I've ever had. The dumplin's completely melt in your mouth and the chicken was nice and tender. The chicken fried steak was awesome too. The breading wasn't too thick and the gravy that accompanied it was spot on. The one thing that makes me sad is that they don't allow you to take the sides to go because it's unlimited, but TRUST ME... you're going to be so ridiculously full that you won't want to take anything home. I don't see what's the big deal here. The chicken was hot. OK that was expected. Mashed potatoes were nothing special. The green beans were seasoned well but too soft. Would have preferred firmer. And I'm not sure what was going on with the corn. It was half way between creamed corn and kernel corn. It was "mystery" corn. The rolls were warm and seemed fresh. I did like the unsweetened tea. It's too dark in the restaurant and the men's toilet wasn't working properly. Oh, and they have these celebrity cutouts on the wall that are supposed to be humorous. It just looks like they're trying to add some decor in a lazy way. And the sign with John Wayne has a spelling error. It's "Pilgrim" not "Pilgram". I'll never eat here again. read more

I don't get the fried and instead go with roasted; I think it tastes better and of course the caloric savings can then get transferred to the real superstar of the menu: the mashed potatoes. HOLY HEAVEN. They serve family-style and everyone who goes with me knows to stay out of my way when they place that bowl o' creamy mashed on the table. Atmosphere is family-style with large picnic-style tables. Service is friendly but they do get fairly busy so just be prepared for that. Love! I came here on my second day living in Abilene and it was like a warm hug. As a native Dallasite, I'm very familiar with Babe's and this was definitely a comparable experience. I knocked off a star because the mashed potatoes looked and tasted like instant. With such few menu items, I'd expect homemade (maybe they were, they just didn't seem like it to me). The other sides (corn, green beans, gravy) were all delicious and I will be thinking about those yeast rolls until my next visit! Of course the star is fried chicken. It comes with a standard set of leg, thigh, breast, and wing. I would prefer the option to do dark meat only, but I was pleasantly surprised by how juicy the breast was! We mentioned to our fantastic waitress that we were from out of town and the news spread to the owners, both of whom independently came over and made sure the meal was to our liking. the food and service are good but not for $17.99 a person with $2.50 a drink. the portion sizes are not worth that much either. it is all you can eat sides but for two adults and a child (5 y/o) we paid $66 and change for 3 meals and three teas. I'm a big chicken fan and I thought this place was just okay. Why? Nothing too special. If you've been to Babe's, this place is pretty much the exact replica. I can't really say which place is better because at Belle's, I had the chicken fried steak and at Babe's, I got the chicken tenders. You walk into this warehouse looking place and inside it's super dim. The service was great, the servers explained to us how it works, no menus, you get an option of a chicken entree and then unlimited sides (green beans, corn, and mashed potatoes). If you want to share your entree, it is allowed with a fee of $5 for that person. You can't take home the sides, only your entree and because of that rule, they literally give you a bag so you can't stuff the sides in. Makes sense. Our waitress was SUPER on top of it, she never did forget about it and checked on us every so often where it wasn't overbearing. The reason why I gave it a 3 star is because the food wasn't great. The chicken fried steak was just alright, it wasn't seasoned enough and the breading fell off right when you cut through it. It also wasn't an outrageously large portion for $12.99 a person. If I'm paying more than $10 for an entree, it should be huge. The sides were okay as well. Nothing great, the green beans were probably from a can, the mashed potatoes were super mashed and I wasn't a fan because it taste like it was homemade which was what I was expecting. Don't get me wrong, they were definitely edible but it wasn't your mama's sides. Would I go again? No, nothing too special to stop by and eat.
