See below for more details. - Called cleaning services and it took them 2 days to come clean the cabin... we stayed for 6 days. One of the first things we noticed when we arrived was that there were ants along every baseboard. We went for a sunset walk and came back to find the cabin filled with 50-60 long winged flies. We killed them all and then went to dinner. We came back and the ants were eating all the dead bodies of the flies. While it was unpleasant having so many ants in the house, they ended up serving as nature's clean up crew. Unfortunately, it doesn't end there. The cabin was filled with spiders, which we don't usually mind, that's kinda normal for a cabin, but when a few roaches & beetles came out at night, that's what did me in. After playing hard all day exploring the island, all we wanted to do was shower, relax on the couch, and get a good night of sleep. However, that never happened. I never felt clean in the snow globe of bugs and had to make sure my suitcase was zipped every second it wasn't open. Hopefully it was just my cabin that had this issue... In the future, I think it would be helpful to invest in some screens, seal the holes in the windows, spray for bugs, and maybe set some traps. :) read more

It was our first time staying at the cabins and I won't lie, I am not a camper and I was very worried that it would be dirty and bug infested. I even thought about bringing my own sheets. But the cabin was great and I would definitely stay again. We were in a cabin fronting the ocean and I liked that we had direct beach access. Some of the cabins you can fish from, but I prefer the ones in front of the beach. Our cabin didn't have AC, so next time I would bring a fan. There are two bedrooms - one with a Queen and the other with two twin beds. The bathroom is tiny, but has soap. You'll need to bring your own shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Outside the cabin is a picnic table, shower, hose, a grill and even a laundry line. Lots of people brought pop up tents. During our stay, my friend's son was stung by Portuguese man of war twice, so it may be helpful to bring vinegar for the sting. Don't forget your body boards or fishing poles! But even if you do, you can easily rent from Turtle Cove. During our stay, we didn't have housekeeping, although I think you can request it. One thing that I didn't note was that you are supposed to take out your trash and clean your dishes before you check out. They should probably remind you this when you check in. We had so much fun! Great place! The prices are definitely unbeatable for the view and location. Seriously amazing to be right on the beach where the sun rises. Although our cabin was very weathered, I understand it's hard to upkeep with the beach just steps away. For no AC, there was a decent breeze throughout the cabin. Main complaint- they don't monitor people parking in your assigned spaces when they come just for the beach during the day. Also, a lot of the cutlery was missing from our unit and knives (serrated, so couldn't be sharpened), we're so dull they were useless. Overall, worth it! After spending over a year just on Oahu my husband and I decided we were way overdue for a staycation! Because we are civilians we had a shorter window of time to reserve a cabin but we had no problems. We checked in on a Monday and checked out on Wednesday. I was pleasantly surprised at how well supplied the kitchen was. We brought some food with us- dinner one night ready to cook in the oven and muffins for breakfast everyday. Coffee maker, plenty of utensils, measuring cups, and multiple bowls were provided. Our cabin was approximately 100 feet away from the ocean. It was perfect for sunrise! There were several benches around the cabins in addition to the outdoor picnic bench provided for each cabin. There's even an outdoor (open) shower provided for each block of cabins. While there is no air-conditioning, I felt fine between the the ceiling fans and open windows. While I saw the biggest cockroach of my LIFE when we first arrived, (thankfully) I didn't see any more bugs during our stay. As of November 2020 they were *not* accepting DBIDS cards for IDs. They said they don't have the same scanners for DBIDS cards as JBPHH. The security guards did not deal with my DBIDS card uniformly. For example, I only found out my DBIDS card couldn't get me into Bellows on the second day of my stay. The beach was nearly empty in the morning and was large enough for everyone to socially distance. We even saw several honu during our stay! We also did one round of mini-golf. We checked out the golf clubs so late in the day we just returned them the next day, otherwise you have an hour rental. The mini golf course was so much fun and stroller friendly. I even got 2 holes in one! In all, I would highly recommend staying at the cabins. read more

Reserve in advance. As early as you can. On big holiday weekends, they're usually sold out on the day of opening reservations. The cabins with outlets and ac is 4 stars but you just don't get the whole camping outdoor experience when you're glued to your phone charger and laying in air condition all day. The other cabins....garsh, I would rather sleep in a tent. Centipedes crawl through anything. Even on top your bed while you're sleeping. My cousin got bit several times while asleep. Didn't realize til he woke up sober though lol. No bathroom, outlets or ac. Just a stiff queen bed and a bunk bed. Beach is beautiful and worth all the family time you can squeeze in! Ok the only reason I'm giving 4 stars is because of the amazing location and stunning sunrises and sunsets. Half the staff is nice and the other half of the staff make like you are bothering them. We have stayed in the beach cabins and menehune cottages. This review is for the cottage.... Inside is soooo dirty and exposed electrical wires and rusty nails NOT child friendly and very dangerous. Communal bathrooms but at least the water was very HOT so no complaints there. I don't understand why they don't clean? Wipe down the window sills, mop the floor, and change the paint color. Cleaning staff does the absolute bare minimum. Half the time they are just driving around in their little carts. Hire more people and do formal cleaning training so that these cabins and camp ground don't take a downward spiral into the abyss. read more

If you and your family want to experience a true hot camping experience then this is the place for you! Our family has been coming here for years but this was the first time we rented a cabin. Normally we choose to camp in a tent or rent out a condo with AC. What to bring: 1. Please bring your own sheets, 1 queen & 2 twin. 2. Bring a broom to clean out all the centipedes..dead and alive. We looked under each bed and found plenty! 3. Bring pillows but don't bring a blanket. 4. Bring portable fans because it is hot!! There is windows but no wind that circulates in the cabin!! 5. Bring soap and shampoo because there is showers in the bathroom. You can have up to 2 tents outside of your cabin with up to 10 people. I wish we would have brought our family sized tent. It would have been cooler in that. Instead we gave up sleeping in the cabin at 4 in the morning and slept in our air conditioned car...we left the kids in the cabin but they didn't mind. Try to rent the cabins closest to the bathroom...I believe it's cabin 1 and 10. There is a shoppette that is open that sales alcohol and all of your wants and needs for camping. Beware they do close early. The beach on bellows is absolutely beautiful but make sure you don't go during the Portuguese Man of War season! If this isn't the experience you want then just rent an area to camp on bellows. We always have a good time camping out here. They also have really nice and clean condos further down the road past the shoppette. read more

This is my second time staying at Bellows AFS Cabins. Like my first time, I was impressed with my lodgings for my stay. The cabin has a full kitchen with a full set of dishes, pots and pans, silverware, and glasses. They also have a coffee maker and a refridgerator. I was able to bring all of my necessities for the next couple of days and not leave the cabin to get anything. I only left to go for a walk on the grounds which is beautiful. Each day I was there I would take a stroll which always ended with me on the beach. There were even benches to sit on if you didn't bring a camping chair with you. The good is great and the bad is pretty darn bad. Pros: Bring a camera: The view and location is unbeatable. Bring a credit card: There's convenient shopping for items within walking distance and there's endless stuff to do. Cons: If you have an electric vehicle you're out of luck. They will knock on your door to chastise you for running an electric cable to charge your vehicle as it is a "tripping hazard", but there's no alternative so you're just out of luck. Bring a fan. Depending on location, nights can be VERY hot. Leaving the door open with the light on means that you'll have a ton of insects. Leaving the door closed means you'll suffocate in the heat. Bring inspect spray: The cabin, while pretty cool, has some insect problems. We had ants absolutely everywhere upon arrival. We learned to live with it, but it was unpleasant. read more

Been coming here for years and this has been the foundation of so many outstanding memories of visits by friends and family members. Personally I think it's the best beach on all Oahu (sorry North Shore; sorry Waikiki; sorry Sandy's)! Not only the beach with its pristine shoreline, soft sands, and far off reef that makes it great for keiki, but the historic cabins add to the relaxation and give this Armed Forces resort a dreamy, "Shangri-La" type feel. You can opt to stay in the newer condos that are fully equipped with modern fixtures, air conditioning, and sealed against bugs and critters (if you're into that), but I always prefer the old cabins especially since you can open the doors and windows and instantly capture the cool trade winds that actually provide a better air circulation. Plus it just is more traditional Hawaiian in ambience! But no matter what lodging you choose, chances are, you will come away impressed, relaxed, and full of peace and Aloha! Lastly, a salute of thanks must be given to the wonderful staff that do a super human job of keeping everything perfect. From the housekeepers to the front desk staff, and all the employees, they give this mystical establishment a sense of beauty that reflects the true aloha nature of their own beautiful hearts! Nasty dirty cabins, roach infested. I killed 30 plus roaches upon entry and both mornings. Our cabin did not have a/c and it was mid July! (Not installed) Opened windows to find screens coated with dust like hairballs. Shower head was so clogged up it could not work. (Removed and cleaned ourself) Asked to be moved and was told it was a two night minimum??? What the heck? We just want a clean well equipped cabin! I had made these reservations months in advance. Its not our fault the cabin was inadequate. Office said they spray for bugs regularly. There is no way! Roaches, centipedes in ants everywhere. ***Get a free roach infestation of your own home with every stay. (Roaches got in my luggage) Don't stay here! One of the best things I've done is stay at the Bellows cabins. They're the perfect, fun and super affordable staycation spots located in Waimanalo. They require military ID, but sponsors can bring guests. The views from the cabins are breathtaking. It's tempting to stay up all night and watch the stars, but don't forget the sunrises in the mornings. I've stayed in the new renovated cabins and the older ones, as well as ones in the front and the back. The cabins don't have AC, but the ocean breezes at night cool down the place throughout the year. During the day if it gets hot, you're no more than 100 yards from the water in any of the cabins. Ocean view cabins are as close as 20 feet from the waters edge in some of them. The rooms have kitchenettes with stocked pots, pans and utensils. They also have TV, refrigerator, microwave and a grill/patio outside. A convenient thing is the showers outside to rinse off the ocean water. These are well worth it! Tip: Go in person to reserve the cabins and check on Thursdays to see if there are cancellations. Online doesn't tell the whole story sometimes. read more

***During COVID-19 Visit*** We've stayed twice here and it was in the beginning stages of COVID-19 when it was only opened to Oahu residents. I remember the days when it was nearly IMPOSSIBLE to get a reservation since they were always booked! You're literally 100 feet away from the ocean. The cabins are nice, equipped with kitchen utensils, microwave, refrigerator, two bedrooms, BBQ grill and picnic table up front. Open the door and let the nice cool ocean breeze blow you away! The sunrises and sunsets are equally amazing. You'll be tempted to count the stars at night, but don't miss out on the sunrise. We walked every night to enjoy the breeze and the scenery. Came here for the first time because my friend wanted to camp here. We stayed at the newest building located at the end of the property and it was setup like a mini hotel. There was room service, 2 bedrooms, living room with cable tv and dvd player, a full kitchen with a regular sized stove/oven, refrigerator, coffee pot, serving utensils, eating utensils, rice pot, large microwave, and a full sized bathroom with sheets, towels, and wash clothes. The beds had nice hawaiian quilt-like blankets and there's A/C and ceiling fans...lol so in other words, we were fake camping. There's a beautiful view of the ocean where we went night crabbing, swam, and/or fished. We stayed 2 nights, 3 days for $137 a night! We were on the first floor so the backdoor was a straight shot to the ocean. There's a bbq grill in front and showers to rinse off after the beach. On top of that, there's wifi! There were 2 assigned parking stalls for the room tenants and parking everywhere else for others. We rarely saw MPs or staff around so beer drinking all over the place wasn't an issue lol. Everyone who stayed in these cabins are military personnel. There's a guard shack in the front who conduct ID checks so you don't have to worry so much about random shady people sneaking in and camping out on the beach where we were. read more

Enjoyed our stay here. They have everything you could need in the cabins. It's clean and cozy. The beach was only a few steps away. Opened all the windows at night roger the ocean breeze at night! OH MY WORLD!!! It was amazing. It was windy, but not cold. The temperature was always perfect! They have a shop near by for al your amenities and grocery. The beach is beautiful and even with the amount of people there, it still felt like it my my private island :D There is a club house that you can watch movies and hangout at. They even have a little kid corner there if you have babies/little kids. The cafe/ Starbucks is nice to checkout to get your morning fix. I just breed Kona coffee and walked with a fresh cup to my little spot every morning :) You can walk around and they have a driving range, a miniature golf, rentals for all sorts of water activities as well as land-ventures :) Careful on land, they do have mongoose and wild boars around. Personally didn't see any, but the pigeons are pretty ballsy out here, hahah. Birds pretty much just walk in the cabins. Loved it here and can't wait to go back!!! read more

We upgraded to the chiefs cabin which included air conditioning, fans, a full kitchen ( no baking sheet though) and a propane grill. The beds were very comfortable. Our patio area was a little tiny but had beautiful views of the islands. The only downfall is that we had a quarter of mile walk to the beach. We just woke up early and parked our car down there. (Family of 5-3 kiddos). The boys wanted to jump off the rocks which are beautiful to look at. All in all it was a great stay here at the cabins at Bellows AFB. read more

We came as a family of 4 back in 1998. This week we came as a family of 11. Memories were made each trip. What an amazing week. The cabins are basic but what more do you need? We spent very little time inside. There's a stove, frig, microwave, coffee pot and toaster. The water in the shower was a good pressure and got plenty hot. We played mini golf and spent every day in the ocean. There were jellies and a strong current but once we learned to watch for them, everything was fantastic. There was even a free movie on Wednesday night - with popcorn, and door prizes!! The store at Turtle Cove was well stocked with souvenirs and tons of rentals. We played free board games. The only downsides? You have to book 9-12 months in advance AND the Starbucks is only open on the weekend. Even if it was only manned a couple hours each morning, that would be fantastic. read more

The only negative I've Ever experienced was strong under tows or Man of Wars once a month but that's just nature. That's what we're here for right?! Reservations Trick for locals: come in person to reserve; better success. Online reservations are suspect here. I love the outside showers at cabins: #priceless w kids. We've never stayed camping yet just cabins & condos. Both are great. Prices range from around $25/night for camping to $125/night for cabins/condos. You have every convenience here except maybe substantial groceries like vegetables. Shoppette, gas, Subway, putt putt, driving-range, paintball on weekends, ITT Office, Public showers, Brewhouse (no kitchen), Starbucks (limited hrs & menu), and the most amazing azul waters with SUP, kayaking, body boarding or surfing if your lucky. You're also SO close to Kailua; Oahu's foodie gem in my Elite Yelp eyes! Head to Cinnamons for brunch & grab some local Manoa Chocolate while your there. This is well worth a Military hop from the West coast & spend at least a week. East coast military family I'd recommend paying for your flight & staying 10 days. Double & triple check your reservations before you come! (With a human) You've heard of 'Aloha Time?' Here there's Aloha Reservations You're also really close to Lighthouse Hike, PCC, Ono Shrimp, Target, and my favorite Oahu business Grace in Growlers. We always have a wonderful time when we camp here. The cabins are always clean when we get there. House keeping comes everyday to switch out towels and to see if you need anything. Some of the cabins are newly renovated so they have AC! Yes my kind of camping! Whenever we come here we try to request for thexabins that's on the beach. I love it. The sound of the waves hitting the shoreline throughout the night is so serene. Beautiful view. You get to catch the sunrise in the morning too if your up on time. They're cabins comes with a grill too so you don't have to bring your own. I love it here. It's windy and gets kinda chilly at night but it's so worth it. My family loves bellows and we always ask ourselves why we don't come out here often and just enjoy life. Love love love. read more

It is hard to get a weekend but with this covid pandemic, there has been many cancellations. It is possible to socially distance here. We usually need 2 cabins so we reserve 1 entire unit. The cabin is small- 2 bedrooms, 1 full bathroom and a living room area with cable TV, a dining room table w/4 chairs, a full refrigerator, stove/oven, microwave, toaster, coffee maker and pots/pans/utensils. The outside hose and shower if very useful. Looking forward to our next weekend here! read more

Believe it or not, you can "rough" it in Hawaii. The Turtle Cove cabins at Bellows Air Station are another world from Waikiki. Located on a lonely road several miles from the highway, our cabin, in a cluster of about 10 other cabins is so close to the beach that the windows facing the water have a salt spray coating. The cinderblock cabins were built for military personnel about sixty years ago. Other than the tile floor, the doorlocks and the plumbing fixtures, nothing appears to have ever been remodeled. Rustic is an entirely suitable description. Nonetheless, free high-speed Internet access and cable T.V. is provided. Also the cabin has two bedrooms and a kitchen. All for under $80/night. The trade winds sweeping off the Pacific Ocean, out of the northeast, continue to howl day after day, but the sound of the breezes along with the waves is calming. The price of the trade wind is the cool and sometimes showery weather. Thick clouds hang tough on the jagged ridge of the Koolau Mountain Range. The daytime high in Waimanolo struggles to reach the 70's. Very different than the warmer and drier weather of Honolulu on the other side of the mountains (on the average, the daytime high is about 10 degrees warmer in Waikiki). If you picture the Oregon Coast in say late May or early June, you have a good idea of the weather here. This would explain why the cabin does not have air conditioning - ceiling fans are sufficient. So even though there is a beautiful deserted beach that stretches for miles, the weather isn't exactly conducive to lying on the beach here. But since there is a miniature golf course at the base as well as lots of day hikes on the island, we won't miss hanging out on the beach. If we do really need to do beach, we can still go down to Waikiki just a half hour away. It's a darn shame that either you or someone in your immediate family must be employed by the Department of Defense to book reservations here. read more

I love staying here ... lots of space inside and out. Relatively quiet unless you get rude neighbors. LOVE the sound of waking up to hearing the ocean crashing on the rocks. No smoking in the cabins or within 50 feet of any building on base...a huge benefit for us non-smokers! Don't think of this as a cheap hotel...think of it with camping with the benefits of "luxuries" like high-speed internet, running water, a safe, and best of all, a real kitchen (full size refrig, plus range/oven, micro and coffeemaker). NOTE - no rice cooker. It can be hit or miss with the front office staff. One lady in particular is quite unfriendly but we didn't have to talk to her this time. Last time, we had to deal with her a few times and it was always unpleasant, to the point of being comical. We had a "renovated" cabin but nevertheless the frig was rusted, one of the windows wouldn't close (ground level, a bit of a security issue), and the beds aren't comfortable. The internet connection can be a bit sporadic (though it is high-speed, fortunately). Bugs WILL come into your room. Don't leave any food out...bring some Ziploc bags and/or plastic containers and/or put everything in the frig. We even put a bag in the freezer to use for trash. Once I managed to leave one grain of rice in the sink after washing dishes, and it attracted lots of little bugs overnight. All that said, this is one of my favorite vacation spots. read more

We went online to reserve a cabin - it was super ez and I thought -- what a blessing and good timing w have! Umm ok we take the generator - whatever's- - Ummmm- he says- no generators -- uhhhh... ??!?!?!! Mind exploding!! Mind u were Hawaiian so we're not prissy by any means - I just didn't realize what I reserved AND bruhhhhhhhhhhh.. My head was pounding last nite thinking abt all the extras we gotta buy/do etc to get ready for this now MayJah project. We are finishing up a 3 night stay here. Being able to walk down to the beach within a minute or wake up to the sunrise right out your window is fantastic. I love that about these cabins. I'm not thrilled they increased their prices. The cabins themselves are pretty worn down. The ceiling fans rattled so hard at night, we had the choice of the awful sound or turning them off to sweat all night. The cabins aren't very clean, my children's feet were black within an hour making me wonder when the floors were last cleaned. There are also cockroaches, which I guess is normal for Hawaii. We have booked these cabins several times and I have mixed feelings after this visit. Again, I don't think the price increase was necessary and made me feel much more expectant of a higher quality stay which wasn't the case. read more

We have been staying at Bellows ,every year,for more than 15 years.We have seen the steady decline in the level of housekeeping services, the lack of physical upkeep of the cabins,multiple repairs that are overdue,along with the continued absence of cabin amenities that once were provided.We always stayed for 2 weeks and booked a year in advance to insure a cabin. As we saw cabin prices rise (from $105 to $127 Oct.2019) and quality of service drop, this year we stayed only 2 nights before cancelling the remainder of our 2 weeks. During those 2 days there was no service to our cabin (#106-B),no trash removal,no floor sweeping (or mopping which it needed prior to our stay) no coffee pack,even after I brought this to the attention of the desk "clerk" In past years, we looked forward to the Wednesday Bellows welcome buffet and Staff presentations of the activities and services available during your stay at Bellows.Also there was a small dining facility with take outs available, real convenient for in cabin meals.All gone. And for those of us "senior citizens"who have had our years of bobbing and swimming at Bellows, also gone are the beach benches that once were a convenient place to rest and enjoy watching the activities. We noticed that young families too seemed drawn to the benches. The one thing that has not changed is the water, the sand and the beach. We love the beachfront cabins & try to come once or twice a year for special occasions. They are rustic but have everything that you need to be able to have an affordable vacation right on the beach. read more

I just spoke with a lady, gave me no name, very unprofessional! The whole time I'm in the phone, she was rushing me! And then she hung up on me! Cabins are awesome! But they need to hire new workers! My family and I love this place! But it's people like her that ruin it for you! read more
