The Hale Koa is a wonderful Hotel. Staff and facilities standards exceed all expectations. However, I too was turned off by the permanent homeless encampments on the beach. I don't fault Hale Koa. Waikiki law prohibits overnight camping on the beach. read more

It's a military hotel, but don't let that fool you. They are well positioned on the beach to give you amazing access to two beautiful and calm beaches. The beaches don't get that crowded, but they also have a great "kids" area with a pool and hot tub. They also have a separate adults only pool and hot tub. We ate in the on-site restaurant several times. Great food, but a little pricey. I recommend their NY stripe steak special, when available. There's a nice little Cafe with grab and go hot and cold foods. I would get breakfast there every morning. Two eggs with bacon for $5. Also nice coffee cart open daily until 11 AM. Coffee was good and they have several prep methods. Definitely do souvenir shopping in the exchange. 50-75% less than the rest of the island on the same products. Rooms are nice and clean and the staff are very attentive. Not at all what you would expect from a military resort. We also did the Friday night Prime Rib buffet. Food is definitely delicious and there's plenty of it. The dessert bar is ok, but could be better. Finally, the luau. Definitely worth the price for the activities and show. The food it ehh. It's good but the portions are small and the fish was really fishy for me. They only have one dessert and no substitution policy unless it's a food allergy. They handled my food allergy well, but no options for diabetics or gluten free, which surprised me. Still, this is definitely a five star experience! read more

I absolutely love this hotel. This hotel is only accessible to service members. Not to civilians. This hotel is absolutely gorgeous. It has a big open wide reception centers with sofas to lounge. Checking in, the staff members were very informative, showing this which tower to take. The only trick I had with the elevator was make sure you tap your room key first before you select a floor number. All of the rooms were absolutely clean. They have like three different restaurants located in the hotel as well. Small exchange with everything you can need. Walking distance to the beach, which is absolutely nice because you can access all the other hotels in the inside of their shopping centers. They do have a new parking structure. The first day you check your car you grab a ticket, but afterwards, the gates memorize, and identify your license plate, so all you have to do is tap your room key to be able to go in and out of the structure with ease. I definitely recommend this hotel to service members. If they have a chance to experience this hotel, go for it because it's absolutely beautiful. read more

If you take the homeless problem out of this equation the hotel and location are great. We've been coming for years, but will not return until the below issue is settled. This has been ongoing since early summer of 2025, and continues to be an issue to this day. Nice hotel overall but the homeless situation has gotten absolutely out of control, and it is ONLY on the Hale Koa beach - which the staff will tell you is public property, but that's not entirely true. It's been almost 1 year where the Hale Koa and Honolulu PD has allowed Homeless encampments to thrive on Ft. DeRussy Beach. (note they do not allow this on any other hotel beaches along the strip) The entire waikiki strip is public up until the high tide line. The beach is closed for hours of the night, the police push the homeless off every other beach except the Hale Koa, which is technically Ft DeRussy beach which his owned and operated by the US Army. They simply do not enforce the rules, and they lie to guests when the question comes up. The Hale Koa is currently of no value to us, as we do not vacation to spend our time with homeless people using drugs, urinating on the sand, defecting in the water and acting violent toward one another and aggressive toward beachgoers. We book the hotel for it's beach front location. The beach front location is not currently usable or safe for children or families. The situation down there is not good, do not waste your time or money on this place right now if you plan on using the beach. If you're an old person who doesn't leave the resort you'll be fine, but their profits will suffer as young families choose to stay elsewhere or skip Hawaii in general - which we're doing for the foreseeable future. Hale Koa and HPD are doing a huge disservice to those who have served and earned the privilege of staying somewhere like this. Disappointing. read more

Hale Koa reminds me of my childhood when we were in year round school and we'd try to fly Space A to Hawaii. 4 star military only hotel located at a perfect spot in Waikiki. Right next to the Hilton hotel, easy access to the main Waikiki strip and walking distance. They have multiple pools, adult only, kids slides, and an infinity pool and beach access. The beach at this portion is much better than the beach access on the Hilton side. They have their own parking garage at $23 a night with in and outs. Your rate is based upon your military rank. It does fill up quickly and way ahead of time. It's best to call over the phone because there's more availability that way than directly online, but be prepared to be on hold for a while. This particular trip was booked last minute to attend a family funeral. Convenient location, they have a BX, laundry on every floor, dining options, gym with a sauna and steam room, salon, and restaurants to dine in. They also have a luau, magic show, and they can help you plan your trips. Staff are super friendly and kind. read more

Really enjoyed this hotel. Conveniently located tot the hot spots near Waikiki and airport. Very clean. We had to wait till at least 3pm to get our room after we arrived at 10:30am so don't expect to get a room early. Love how they have military store with plenty of stocked selections. Rooms were roomy and enjoyed the ocean view. No issues with our room. Check out easy with express check out. Grounds had a lot of space for everyone. Parking is located across the street but still easily accessible. You can easily walk to nearby downtown Waikiki and nice shops and restaurants. read more

I cannot comment on the hotel stay as my family stayed here. This is for military only. I only came to visit. I was able to use the pool and attended a Luau here. The hotel is beautiful, the staff is friendly, and they have a pool located beachside. There is one adults only pool, but if you continue to walk down the path, you'll find yourself at the second pool. There's a mini water park area complete with slides for kids next to an 'grown ups' pool. We had a ball playing with the kids. As for the luau, my husband said it was better then the first one we went to (not at this hotel). Personally, I preferred the previous luau, but this one had a better menu. Our waiter was amazing! I wish we had taken cash to tip him. The end of the Luau was so lovely paying tribute to not only those in the armed forces (past and present), but also to the fallen soldiers. read more

This military only hotel is wonderful! They have everything that you need for a fantastic Waikiki vacation. Right on the beach but also in the heart of downtown Waikiki. The property has several restaurants and bars. One of the restaurants is nicer and serves excellent good. There is a store and also a coffee bar on property. The pools are gorgeous. They have adults only as well as a kids pool complete with splash pad and pirate ship plus watersides. There are two hot tubs. They provide nice clean towels. You can also rent some beach chairs and spend the day splashing in the waves. There is a fitness center with a steam room and sauna. The grounds are pristine with well maintained lush tropical gardens. They have tiki torches burning every night and host regular luaus. The staff is lovely and so friendly. The rooms are typical hotel style but clean and updated. The location is great and in proximity to terrific dining and shopping. The city is very walkable. You have to be worth allot of money to get invited to dine at their restaurant Bibas Grill. We spent money to stay at this hotel and never once was able to get a table at this restaurant. We were told they were full and it would be a 30 min wait, but there were 15 open tables not including outside tables. I asked if we needed a reservation and they don't take them. But the two ladies right behind us as we left, were seated immediately. We didn't look like we had money evidently, so we never got seated. Unfortunately for them, I prob make more than 99% of the patrons here. Won't stay at Hale Koa again. Wasn't a very pleasant experience. We were taking my 97 year old MIL to visit her sister and my FIL was military so this is where the family stayed in Honolulu. It's a decent hotel and seemed clean and the bed was comfy. Not great food choices here. I would recommend eating offsite. The coffee counter in the lobby serves Starbucks, but not a full Starbucks menu. The line was also always very long in the morning. The PX downstairs had very good reasonably priced coffee that was better and quicker. We also found a breakfast spot we really enjoyed that was about a 10 minute walk from the hotel. Maybe because we had my MIL, maybe because of food choices, maybe because of the poky elevator, maybe because it's Honolulu, I never felt really relaxed here. Just missed the mark for me. read more

What a beautiful and amazing hotel! We were able to check in a bit early and settle into our room because it was ready early which was super nice after a morning of traveling. There are two towers, so make sure you ask which one you're in since the elevators are in different spots for each one. There is a tour table near the lobby so you can schedule trips and during the day they have vendors in the lobby as well. On the ground floor, you'll find a PX with Hawaiian print clothing of all types, souvenirs, drinks, snacks, stuff for the pool and beach, and more! There is also a decent restaurant there as well. If you walk out towards the beach you'll find the pools, another place to eat, the beer garden and the Luau Garden. The location for this hotel is pretty nice and once you walk down the stairs and thru the park you're on Kalakaua Avenue for shopping! Not a bad walk to the International Market Place or Royal Hawaiian Center. The rooms are pretty nice and spacious. I've stayed in both towers and in one tower you get a bottle of shampoo and body wash (no conditioner) and in the other tower you get a little bottle of shampoo/conditioner in one, body wash and a soap bar. Just a heads up for that one. The balcony is super nice and beautiful. We got a partial beach view and it was breathtaking! read more

We were here 50 years ago on their grand opening that fell on my birthday. Stationed in the area. Had to come back for my birthday and their 50 Thank You! Anniversary. Got a partial ocean view and had a lovely view of the ocean. Room was large, very clean, and very convenient to get to the beach, pool, and Happys with an elevator going down directly to the garden path. They have a massive garden with trees, plants, flowers, birds and benches to rest on while you take in the sights. read more

Had a great stay here in March. The location could not be beat! It was five minutes from our room and we were on the beach. Room was clean and updated. View was amazing! We had a partial ocean view in Maile tower. I loved to sit on the lanai in the morning enjoying my coffee. The mini mart and restaurants on site were great options for meals or snacks. Pool clean and lots of seating. The onsite luau was great and included a tribute to the military as well as tradition. They do offer a vegetarian option as well which I enjoyed. Thankful that we are eligible to use this hotel but caution they start booking a year out so plan accordingly. read more

**** HOTEL HAS BED BUGS. . . . .My wife and I checked out last Thursday after a week's stay only to find out that the room had BED BUGS. I have bites all over my legs and arms - see just a few pics below. I contacted the hotel at 7:00AM this morning asking for the manager to help guests currently staying in that room avoid the huge inconvenience this is going to be and I left a msg. As of this afternoon I still haven't heard back. I would've thought this would be a priority but apparently not. Luckily, my wife and I unpacked all our clothes in the garage and they went immediately into the washing machine. This is COMPLETELY unacceptable. I get that things happen but you would think that a hotel manager's first and foremost priority would be the heath and safety of their guests. Until this is properly addressed and treated I would NOT stay at this hotel. If you unknowingly bring these back home with you it will cost a few thousand $$ to have your house treated and you, most likely, will not be able to stay there for a day or two. read more

Beach: If you have a set day to visit the beach, rent a seat/umbrella. It's worth it! Make sure to make a reservation to ensure a spot. Sunsets: Perfect sunset viewing each day. We absolutely loved our stay at the Hale Koa. The location can't be beat, steps from the beach and within walking distance to so many shops and restaurants. The kids' pool was a huge hit, my kids couldn't get enough of the waterslide and spent hours there on our pool days. The Friday night fireworks next door were such a cool experience and super easy to access from the hotel. Perfect ending to our trip. Our actual room was clean and comfortable, and we really enjoyed the partial ocean view. Parking was reasonable, and the breakfast buffet was fantastic (especially the Wednesday menu). We also liked the Barefoot Bar, good drinks at fair prices. The on-site exchange was super convenient with a great selection of items and no tax! I'd stay here again in a heartbeat. The only downside was the strict pool rules and early closing times. The lifeguards were constantly blowing whistles over small things at every single person, which took away a bit from the fun. I was so pleasantly surprised when we stayed at this hotel. Yes this is a military hotel but you would never guess. The lobby is big and open. They have beautiful greenery around the property. Plenty of places to get food. Bars if you drink. Exchange there for military only tax free. Large grass area to sit under trees and watch the beach. Multiple pools for adults only and kids! It over looks the beach. It's absolutely amazing. Rooms are standard size. Ilima tower has amazing ocean views. It has direct beach access. Literally next door to the Hilton Village that has a ton more to do. Tons of shops, food, and sweets if you want to venture out of the hotel. Fireworks on Friday night from the Hilton. Lush, tropical grounds and great pools! First stay was with family for 7 nites. It's semi exclusive, someone must be military or have access allowing them to stay here. Price is very reasonable for such a lovely resort, around $300 a night. Location is great too, with direct beach access and next to Hilton Hawaiian Village. We walked along the beach adjacent sidewalk to get to nearby resorts and other Waikiki restaurants and bars. Our balcony room had an ocean view, which was appreciated daily. The room was fine, it had a decent sized fridge. Our bathroom had a separate sink area which is helpful when sharing a room. My favorites here include the store, which had great variety. You can get all your snacks, bevvies & souvenirs here. Great selection of alcohol, and very convenient to get coffee too. I really enjoyed the pools and hot tubs, and we rented a cabana twice for around $50 for 3 hours. There's an adults only infinity pool above the main pool, and a separate adults only pool without the ocean view. The lobby is open air, there's no door to access this area. One outdoor bar had live music which we listened to one evening. Drink prices are cheaper if staying at the resort or you have military ID. Restaurants and bars are open to anyone, and the resort doesn't restrict access to those areas. There's a beachside bar in front of the park adjacent to the resort that's pretty cool. It's not obvious that it's a Hale Koa bar, and you have to show your hotel card to get the discounted drink prices. I was told the burger at the restaurant was outstanding by a family member. We had dinner once at the restaurant, and the food was pretty good. We're already planning a return trip. read more

So it is May and we are here again for the wife's birthday. We have stayed at Hale Koa many times over the years - usually in an Ocean View (OV) room. Since the expansion of eligibility to VA & PH patrons, it is a bit busier and booked up further in advance. On this trip, the best room available was a POV. These are usually the same as OV, but located further away from the beach. We were assigned to our room, but unfortunately the view was not only a "glimpse", but you had to walk around the corner of your balcony to see it. I appreciate that they originally assigned us a corner room with a wrap-around balcony, but my wife really wanted to be able to see the ocean while she read. We were going to be there for 21 nights, so I went to the front desk to see if a change was possible. Then I met Emily. She was delightful and competent. I explained the situation and she worked with her manager. Collectively, they moved reservations around and gave us another room. The room was outstanding. We were the second room closest to the water on the 14th floor of Ilima tower. Awesome views, quiet, glimpses of the luau entertainment, and shaded 3/4 of the day. Thanks, Emily for making our stay awesome. Regarding Hale Koa. Yes, it is showing its age. Built in the 1970s it is a little outdated. But the maintenance and continuous updating keep the grounds and common areas pristine. Speaking of grounds, Hale Koa offers a larger piece of land than Hilton Hawaiian next door. The Hilton has several thousand rooms, while Hale Koa has about 800. 2 pools (1 is kind of a water park for kids), several places to eat and the barefoot bar. Tips: Happy's Fast and Fresh is a great value for dinner. Their specials change each night and include things like Kalua pork with cabbage, salmon with honey nut sauce, spaghetti, lasagne, pot roast, etc. The secret is 1 meal is plenty for a couple of seniors, especially if you add a cup of pineapple or watermelon. You can take the food to the barefoot bar and have it with a couple of reasonable priced Mai Tais and live music. Koko's at Kalia is also a great onsite pick for buffet breakfast. Look up their daily menu - All of them are great, but our favorites are Tuesday and Wednesday (macadamia pancakes, Portuguese sausage, steak eggs Benedict). Bibas is fine, but happy hour food portions are pretty small. Drink prices are the same as barefoot bar. A great resource is the on-site PX, where you can get a good selection of wine, premixed OTR cocktails, Maui Onion chips, Tori Richard's shirts, and even a few healthy food items:-) Gym is excellent but not huge. Overall, if you qualify, this is a great choice for Waikiki. Rates run from about $189 to $395 including all fees and taxes. Note: if you have friends who qualify to stay here they can "sponser" up to 2 additional rooms during the their stay. Love this place!!! read more

The luau was wonderful. The only complaint I have is the all the homeless tents on the beach in front of the hotel. There were at least 10 tents.They were there the entire time we stayed, and there was nothing done about it. The Hilton next-door does not have the same problem and there are no tents on the beach. There were lots of items on the beach as well as a dog living in one of the tents.I have little kids so I was not expecting them to have to play around homeless tents. I am really surprised this is allowed to go on. This would definitely be a reason for us to look at a different hotel the next time we visit read more

The pool closing at 5 is CRIMINAL! No wonder these kids are called "military brats," they must be bored out of their minds!!!! I would be a menace too if I was forced to stop swimming before sunset! While the rooms could use some updating, the hotel's affordability, convenient BX, excellent gym, and prime location on Waikiki make it an excellent choice. Our friend was able to sponsor us in. We've stayed bete a few times before but it's been a long time as it's before the pool updated. If u arrived before check in or your sponsor, they will allow u to store your luggage and even can store items in fridge. Parking am garage across the street. No valet. They have mini nex, restaurants, adult pool, kids pool with slide. Pool slide closes earlier 8-6pm regular pool 8-8p. Idk adult pool hrs. There's a luau here. Probably the most inexpensive one on the island. I also like that the pool is along the beach and the beach is pretty private unlike busy Waikiki beach. I feel secure at this hotel cos they require key cards to go up to the room. They have 24hr gym and sauna. Water refill station in gym. That's where I refill my water bottles. Ice vending machine on r she floor I think at the end of the hall equip with microwave and vending machine. Other end of hall is the washer/dryer. There's only one each on each flooor. There's a detergent/ dryer sheet making in the room but it was out of dry sheets. So maybe plan ahead. They have a breakfast buffet for a decent price like continental breakfast. I just went to happys restaurant when I wanted something quick to go. I'll do a separate review on happy resto. Oh and the line may start in front of the store but then there's a gap and continues at the mall entrance. Like wraps along the building. I think stussy is located inside royal hawaiian. Was great at first then the odd rules started. - Main pool is great, but everyone under 18 yo have come out of the pool for 15 minutes out of every hour. We had seven pe in our party so two of us went to get a table set up while the rest were getting read but they would not let us go in until the entire party was there. i asked why but they didn't have a good reason. - I went to reception to ask about a comment card and was told they do not have them but we will have a chance to put in comments at the end of our stay. If you're currently serving in the armed forces or you're retired then more than likely you know about the Hale Koa hotel. Yes it's exclusively for military, past and present. Yes, they have different prices for different ranks. Yes, it's located in Waikiki but if you're looking to experience some Aloha on the main island, make a reservation here. The staff is truly amazing. They are all very friendly and very polite. The rooms are normal hotel rooms. They come with a coffee maker, small dorm style refrigerator, TV and small desk. The lanai's are big enough for two chairs and a small table, perfect for that morning coffee with your loved one next to you. The resorts gardens are the best. They are well manicured and very lush. Did I mention they have lots of open space's for the kids to play? Plus they have picnic tables and even some bbq pits. Also right next door is the military museum. The pools are great. They have two, one for adults only, the other for everyone. The pool times are limited, longer on weekends. Restaurants on property are all decent, we generally prefer eating off property but will usually eat on property once or twice during our stay. Did I mention they have the best luau on the island? Yes, it's specifically themed towards military families and veterans and it's hosted by Glenn Medeiros! House cleaning staff are very nice and will provide extra towels, we need them because I have three ladies with long hair! We always enjoy our stay here and make reservations for the following year before we leave. I tell people it's the best resort in Waikiki. No, it's not the fanciest or most modern but for the price and amenities I really don't think you can do better. No sales tax, no resort fees, parking fees are only $22 a night, compared to over $75 next door at the Hilton! Hale Koa is our favorite place to stay in Oahu. Great for families and couples.
