Great spot for a homeless camp - directly in front of beach chair rentals
    Moe E.

If you take the homeless problem out of this equation the hotel and location are great. We've been coming for years, but will not return until the below issue is settled. This has been ongoing since early summer of 2025, and continues to be an issue to this day. Nice hotel overall but the homeless situation has gotten absolutely out of control, and it is ONLY on the Hale Koa beach - which the staff will tell you is public property, but that's not entirely true. It's been almost 1 year where the Hale Koa and Honolulu PD has allowed Homeless encampments to thrive on Ft. DeRussy Beach. (note they do not allow this on any other hotel beaches along the strip) The entire waikiki strip is public up until the high tide line. The beach is closed for hours of the night, the police push the homeless off every other beach except the Hale Koa, which is technically Ft DeRussy beach which his owned and operated by the US Army. They simply do not enforce the rules, and they lie to guests when the question comes up. The Hale Koa is currently of no value to us, as we do not vacation to spend our time with homeless people using drugs, urinating on the sand, defecting in the water and acting violent toward one another and aggressive toward beachgoers. We book the hotel for it's beach front location. The beach front location is not currently usable or safe for children or families. The situation down there is not good, do not waste your time or money on this place right now if you plan on using the beach. If you're an old person who doesn't leave the resort you'll be fine, but their profits will suffer as young families choose to stay elsewhere or skip Hawaii in general - which we're doing for the foreseeable future. Hale Koa and HPD are doing a huge disservice to those who have served and earned the privilege of staying somewhere like this. Disappointing.

Hale Koa reminds me of my childhood when we were in year round school and we'd try to fly Space A to Hawaii. 4 star military only hotel located at a perfect spot in Waikiki. Right next to the Hilton hotel, easy access to the main Waikiki strip and walking distance. They have multiple pools, adult only, kids slides, and an infinity pool and beach access. The beach at this portion is much better than the beach access on the Hilton side. They have their own parking garage at $23 a night with in and outs. Your rate is based upon your military rank. It does fill up quickly and way ahead of time. It's best to call over the phone because there's more availability that way than directly online, but be prepared to be on hold for a while. This particular trip was booked last minute to attend a family funeral. Convenient location, they have a BX, laundry on every floor, dining options, gym with a sauna and steam room, salon, and restaurants to dine in. They also have a luau, magic show, and they can help you plan your trips. Staff are super friendly and kind.

Really enjoyed this hotel. Conveniently located tot the hot spots near Waikiki and airport. Very clean. We had to wait till at least 3pm to get our room after we arrived at 10:30am so don't expect to get a room early. Love how they have military store with plenty of stocked selections. Rooms were roomy and enjoyed the ocean view. No issues with our room. Check out easy with express check out. Grounds had a lot of space for everyone. Parking is located across the street but still easily accessible. You can easily walk to nearby downtown Waikiki and nice shops and restaurants.

I cannot comment on the hotel stay as my family stayed here. This is for military only. I only came to visit. I was able to use the pool and attended a Luau here. The hotel is beautiful, the staff is friendly, and they have a pool located beachside. There is one adults only pool, but if you continue to walk down the path, you'll find yourself at the second pool. There's a mini water park area complete with slides for kids next to an 'grown ups' pool. We had a ball playing with the kids. As for the luau, my husband said it was better then the first one we went to (not at this hotel). Personally, I preferred the previous luau, but this one had a better menu. Our waiter was amazing! I wish we had taken cash to tip him. The end of the Luau was so lovely paying tribute to not only those in the armed forces (past and present), but also to the fallen soldiers.

This military only hotel is wonderful! They have everything that you need for a fantastic Waikiki vacation. Right on the beach but also in the heart of downtown Waikiki. The property has several restaurants and bars. One of the restaurants is nicer and serves excellent good. There is a store and also a coffee bar on property. The pools are gorgeous. They have adults only as well as a kids pool complete with splash pad and pirate ship plus watersides. There are two hot tubs. They provide nice clean towels. You can also rent some beach chairs and spend the day splashing in the waves. There is a fitness center with a steam room and sauna. The grounds are pristine with well maintained lush tropical gardens. They have tiki torches burning every night and host regular luaus. The staff is lovely and so friendly. The rooms are typical hotel style but clean and updated. The location is great and in proximity to terrific dining and shopping. The city is very walkable. Military people if you are considering staying here I say do it!

We were taking my 97 year old MIL to visit her sister and my FIL was military so this is where the family stayed in Honolulu. It's a decent hotel and seemed clean and the bed was comfy. Not great food choices here. I would recommend eating offsite. The coffee counter in the lobby serves Starbucks, but not a full Starbucks menu. The line was also always very long in the morning. The PX downstairs had very good reasonably priced coffee that was better and quicker. We also found a breakfast spot we really enjoyed that was about a 10 minute walk from the hotel. Maybe because we had my MIL, maybe because of food choices, maybe because of the poky elevator, maybe because it's Honolulu, I never felt really relaxed here. Just missed the mark for me.

2022: Hale Koa's Marquis . . . Waaaah~So many places I have visited and forgot writing a review!!!! Oooof~I didn't stay at Hale Koa; however, when visiting Oahu, I always decide whether eating breakfast, lunch or dinner, i.e., the food served is reminiscent to the USAF's Chow Hall "Fine Dining" Cuisine~lol. Nothing fantabulous such as inhaling at a Michelin Star Restaurant, not tropical chic like Dukes Waikiki, nothing like inhaling at Ruth and Chris, and definitely not inhaling seafood at Foodland's Poke Bar--lol. So, what type of food is served at Hale Koa, eh? Please don't inquire--it's typical food found BELOW Mimi's Cafe, Black Bear Restaurant but, a cut above IHOP~capische?

Military hotel with discounts for military personnel. Right on the beach with a lot of family friendly amenities - PX tax free mini mart with souvenirs, jewelry, quick grocery items - gym with sauna and steam rooms - wifi and clean rooms - pool and jacuzzi for adults only and family friend pool area - Water slide and water park for kids - beach side bar - fireworks on Fridays - Luau entertainment and food - local art market in the lobby in the mornings - buffet restaurant on first floor

What a beautiful and amazing hotel! We were able to check in a bit early and settle into our room because it was ready early which was super nice after a morning of traveling. There are two towers, so make sure you ask which one you're in since the elevators are in different spots for each one. There is a tour table near the lobby so you can schedule trips and during the day they have vendors in the lobby as well. On the ground floor, you'll find a PX with Hawaiian print clothing of all types, souvenirs, drinks, snacks, stuff for the pool and beach, and more! There is also a decent restaurant there as well. If you walk out towards the beach you'll find the pools, another place to eat, the beer garden and the Luau Garden. The location for this hotel is pretty nice and once you walk down the stairs and thru the park you're on Kalakaua Avenue for shopping! Not a bad walk to the International Market Place or Royal Hawaiian Center. The rooms are pretty nice and spacious. I've stayed in both towers and in one tower you get a bottle of shampoo and body wash (no conditioner) and in the other tower you get a little bottle of shampoo/conditioner in one, body wash and a soap bar. Just a heads up for that one. The balcony is super nice and beautiful. We got a partial beach view and it was breathtaking!

Had a great stay here in March. The location could not be beat! It was five minutes from our room and we were on the beach. Room was clean and updated. View was amazing! We had a partial ocean view in Maile tower. I loved to sit on the lanai in the morning enjoying my coffee. The mini mart and restaurants on site were great options for meals or snacks. Pool clean and lots of seating. The onsite luau was great and included a tribute to the military as well as tradition. They do offer a vegetarian option as well which I enjoyed. Thankful that we are eligible to use this hotel but caution they start booking a year out so plan accordingly.

**** HOTEL HAS BED BUGS. . . . .My wife and I checked out last Thursday after a week's stay only to find out that the room had BED BUGS. I have bites all over my legs and arms - see just a few pics below. I contacted the hotel at 7:00AM this morning asking for the manager to help guests currently staying in that room avoid the huge inconvenience this is going to be and I left a msg. As of this afternoon I still haven't heard back. I would've thought this would be a priority but apparently not. Luckily, my wife and I unpacked all our clothes in the garage and they went immediately into the washing machine. This is COMPLETELY unacceptable. I get that things happen but you would think that a hotel manager's first and foremost priority would be the heath and safety of their guests. Until this is properly addressed and treated I would NOT stay at this hotel. If you unknowingly bring these back home with you it will cost a few thousand $$ to have your house treated and you, most likely, will not be able to stay there for a day or two.

Hale Koa, thank you for this economic and beautiful hotel you offer to military personnel. We enjoyed our 8 days here, despite it raining on our last day. We can't wait to visit again. My daughter loved your beautiful beachfront seating where she caught many sunsets. My son loved your food! My husband loved the price! I simply loved the convenience & relaxation! Food: Cost friendly. A lot of the food can be repetitive and cafeteria'ish - but not bad for breakfast or lunch. We visited other places if we wanted something different, but ate onsite most of the time. Drinks: Adult drinks , perfect. The ease of ordering near the pool was nice. Beach: If you have a set day to visit the beach, rent a seat/umbrella. It's worth it! Make sure to make a reservation to ensure a spot. Sunsets: Perfect sunset viewing each day. Grab dinner and find a seat near the walkway. You won't be disappointed. Parking: It's across the street. It's easy to get to and inexpensive when compared to other locations. Rooms: Perfect room & balcony for the price. Satisfied 100% Customer Service: No issues. Everyone we encountered was kind and friendly.

We absolutely loved our stay at the Hale Koa. The location can't be beat, steps from the beach and within walking distance to so many shops and restaurants. The kids' pool was a huge hit, my kids couldn't get enough of the waterslide and spent hours there on our pool days. The Friday night fireworks next door were such a cool experience and super easy to access from the hotel. Perfect ending to our trip. Our actual room was clean and comfortable, and we really enjoyed the partial ocean view. Parking was reasonable, and the breakfast buffet was fantastic (especially the Wednesday menu). We also liked the Barefoot Bar, good drinks at fair prices. The on-site exchange was super convenient with a great selection of items and no tax! I'd stay here again in a heartbeat. The only downside was the strict pool rules and early closing times. The lifeguards were constantly blowing whistles over small things at every single person, which took away a bit from the fun. Honestly, I'd prefer a "swim at your own risk" vibe. But that was a minor issue in an otherwise amazing stay.

Hale Koa Hotel Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Hale Koa Hotel

Do they have a private beach?

Private pools, yes, but the beach isn't private. Anyone can go to the beach in front of the Hale Koa.

Is the pool back up and running?

Sorry, have no idea. We live on Oahu, have reservations for the end of the month but haven't been able to get threw on the land line - still aw an answer from an email sent Tuesday 2 June! Hear the beaches are open - Best of luck!

What does a partial ocean view room look like? Or is it worth upgrading to a sea view room?

I stayed in a partial ocean view. You literally had to step out onto the lanai to see the ocean in between buildings. So...it was just a sliver of a view.

Is there an area on the resort grounds with firepits and places to sit?

There is a large park with charcoal grills and picnic tables between Hale Koa and the Army Museum. As for fire pits I didn't see any.

Can you see the Friday night fireworks from the new location of the Barefoot Bar at the hotel?

Yes- most people walk out on the sidewalk.

If my husband is active duty and books a room for us can I his spouse who plans to check in before him will that be an issue?

The reservation might also have to include your name. I would call the hotel and ask directly to make sure it's okay. Your military ID showing you as a dependent might not be enough.

Anyone have the 411 on the pool reno? I've called the front desk twice in the last week and seem to have received a standard response of... not yet, we are hoping for late August or early September. They wouldn't elaborate or guesstimate. Boo.

I don't know of an exact date but the sign on the fence says "Coming Late Summer 2019". Summer in Hawaii could be any time of year though lol. I peeked through the shade to see the progress and it seems like they're moving along!

Are renovations for the new pool done?

We were there a week ago and a lifeguard said they were about a week from opening. They were waiting on inspection signatures on the power equipment.

What are happy hour days and times?

I believe happy hours are 2-5 at Barefoot Bar and then from 5-8 at the other lounge on property. If you plan ahead you can drink real cheap throughout the Hale Koa.

Do you have to be a hotel guest to use pool even if you have military id?

Hale Koa Hotel Pools are exclusively for registered guests only. You can't bring or sponsor non-registered guest to use the pool. Plus with Covid rules have do contact tracing.

Is this buffet for hotel guests only?

Currently during COVID, there is no buffet.

Would like to ask if there is lunch buffet on july 14 sunday?

Yes; as long as you have an active/retired US military/DOD ID, you should be good. DETAILS HERE:… Read more

Yes, they are always offered at Sunday brunch!

The website says you have to be military to attend events at the hotel.. is this correct?

Where and how much is parking?

You can park in the 4 level garage just across Kalia Road. We were not hotel guests, but we visited in mid-February 2019 and paid $8.50 for 2 hours and $9 for 3 hours. If military or retired, go to the front or bell desk to get your ticket validated… Read more

What sort of breakfast credit comes with the room and breakfast rate? Is it the buffet? Does it apply on Sundays for brunch?

My husband and I want to renew our vows (just us and our kids on the beach) who would you recommend for something not too expensive and a few photos included? Nothing corny.

Do the rooms have Air Conditioning? (Just wanted to make sure)

    Yes they do

Yes. Or at least you have to be with a military member.

All I can say is that if I worked in this facility, it would be very difficult to get any work done. I'd be wowed by the cool, gentle breezes, sunny blue skies and close proximity of Diamond Head and Waikiki Beach. But, that's what makes this property perfect for the Parks & Recreation to own and manage! #306

Place is AWESOME!!! I totally forgot about this location for events too! Shoots!…read more They can hold over 300 people sitting side by side for a screening, move or even music or dancing. But they can also rearrange a sitting arrangement so there is open areas for people to stand and mingle. Then they have the lounge area. That's our favorite! The couches are enormous and the set up is immaculate! They had floor walkers and escorts who helped everyone find seats or direct them where to go. That's as a good thing. Usually m, people have to figure out what to do or where to go at these events, no?! Lol. But this was a once in a lifetime experience for us and it was AWESOME! Of course my son didn't want to watch himself on screen, but, we all loved it! He did well. In fact, they ALL DID! Every single film was done excellent! I wish we could've stayed for the whole thing, but unfortunately we had to leave early because the kids had school the next day. So we left around 9pm. Maybe next time we'll have a better chance in watching our son on screen again. Soon! For sure... Ok that's about it! OH! And the restroom! Oh my... it's an experience to have. Lol! It's amazing! One door for ALL to enter. Then as you pass the main door, your in the lobby of the restroom. Like they have in fancy theaters or auditoriums or hotels. Yup! Only difference is, there's no seats or chairs to lounge on. There's a long marble counter top with about 5 individual sinks. Each side accessible for anyone to wash up. Mirrors along the wall. And then the MENS DOOR for their restroom is on the left and the WOMENS on the right. Ever the bathroom stalls were cozy. Toilet seats were nice and comfy, not those public restroom toilets. But the hotel kine. Just without the extra fancy buttons. It's definitely somewhere anyone should go and see. Especially when they host an event there. OK NOW IM DONE! Thanks for reading! Have a good one! A hui hou MALAMA PONO and

This Courtyard is like a chameleon!…read more It becomes an outdoor ice Skating Rink in the Hawaiian "winter"; changes into a open-air movie theater on the second Thursday of the month when the weather is warmer; and converts to a concert venue on the third Wednesday of the month during the spring, summer, and autumn. At other times, people enjoy this space as a Yoga studio/art gallery. Ward Village makes really good use of this area. Chairs are set up for the movies and concerts. A gigantic tent is erected when the weather is suggesting rain. Otherwise, the audience enjoys gentle trade winds, silhouettes of palm trees, and views of fluffy clouds, gorgeous sunsets, and sometimes... the silvery moon. There's a water feature on the far side of the courtyard, so if the sound bothers you, sit nearer to the entrance and away from the wall. Most events are free - just look for the community events online and print out your tickets! If the event you're interested in is a Brunch, the fee will be posted an you'll get a chance to try specialties of local restaurants, using a ticket system. There's ample free parking nearby and a beautiful, clean restroom on the ground floor of the "IBM Building". The co-ed sinks are a great idea for efficient use of this facility! Check it out!!!
