I was lucky enough to spend the afternoon here at their Annual Bargains and Bluegrass Festival. They offered tours of the on-site farmhouse (built in the 1840s) and guided guests on nature trail walks around the property. To top it off, they hosted a yard sale offering many antiques from the property while guests perused the tables to the sounds of a local bluegrass group. First off, the volunteers here with the non-profit organization that took over operation of the farm when Charles Borders passed are just so friendly and helpful. During the guided hike of the property, I learned so much about the history of the farm and my bucolic surroundings. We viewed barns, talked about the community garden, met the cattle, walked over a land bridge that traversed a below-the-road cattle crossing, smelled fresh red cedar wood, learned about mushrooms and farm equipment, rested by a spring-fed pond and played with the Jack Russell terrier puppy that came on the trip. The red and yellow trails were well-marked and a nice stroll on a late summer day. The tour of the farmhouse was a mix of history about Charles and Margery as well as the house itself and antiques that filled it. Charles was born on the property and lived there until his death. One of the people in our tour group was a member of the Borders family (who had not been to the house since they were a child) so I was fortunate enough to hear stories they recollected from that time. A great educational, community area to preserve and introduce others to the workings of a 20th century farm. I was looking for something fun to do, so I picked up a copy of the Bargain Buyer (dated October…read more10th) and began leafing through it, as there are usually ads for fun things to do. My eyes fell on the ad for Cucumber Hill Farm, so I checked out their web site, then got directions. After a scenic half hour drive, we arrived at Cucumber Hill Farm, and we were greeted by the sight of this big red barn. We were told by a very friendly staff member to purchase our tickets for the corn maze there. A ticket for the corn maze also includes a free hay ride, so why not? First was the hay ride, then the corn maze. The size of the corn maze is just right, and the cows mooing in the distance added to the charm. After the corn maze, my nephew played in the kiddie maze, made with bales of hay, and designed for the little ones. Then I checked out the barn, where I found some goat milk soap from Sparrow Soaps. I also bought five colorful gourds for our house, and Mom got some farm fresh jam. I'm gonna cut to the chase and say everything here gets a ten. I saw so many cool pumpkins - round ones, fat ones, bumpy ones, white ones, speckled ones - and gourds, I had a hard time choosing between the gourds, but I eventually settled on five that I liked. October 28th is their last day for the season, so hopefully you'll get to make the trek there. If I don't make it back again this season, I will definitelt be back next year.

I am…read morenow 33- and I took my four-year-old niece here so we could build a scarecrow like I used to with my aunt. The employees are pleasant. The prices are great. You can build a scarecrow- they offer clothes or you can bring your own. The price was really good. And the experience was even better. You sit in all the hay- you're given instructions on how to build him/her and then you make memories. Once you are all done, an employee puts your scarecrow together for you. And then you can draw the face. It's exactly the same process from when I was little and It brought back so many memories. They also have a small farm in the back . You pay for food and then you can see the chickens the horse, the goats and a few other animals. Also, during the weekend you can do pumpkin picking and go on a hayride. If you haven't been here, this is for sure a hidden jam that's been around for an extremely long time. My niece enjoyed her time and our scarecrow is so cute.

The cost of this giant bucket, I seriously have so many strawberries, was a great value. I do wish maybe they had a couple of sizes to choose from but I'm finding new recipes to use these guys. The apples were great quality and were delicious to eat and bake with later in the week. We parked a little far out from the entrance based on how busy it was (Sunday afternoon), but it was an easy walk. A lot of the apples that were ready to be picked and of good quality were at the top of the trees. I wish they offered ladders or picker tools to allow people to get good apples that can't be reached otherwise. Also, they had run out of apple cider donuts, which was a shame. We got some apple cider and fresh raspberries to take home, which were also both delicious. I would definitely pick our own raspberries next year if we return. We would definitely go back for a fun Fall activity each year!

I thought the layout was easy to follow and very organized. The space across the orchard was truly maximized. Rows upon rows of beautiful apples waiting to be picked. This weekend 9/15, Honeycrisp, Cortland, Gala, Liberty and McIntosh were ready for picking. My wife and I are apple feinds eating 1 or 2 a day each. We had the fridge space for cold storage so we did 1/2 bushel which hits you @ $55. We ended up getting 24.5lbs of apples which came out to $2.24/lb. Not bad for fresh off the tree. If you don't eat as many apples, it is a little on the price side because here are the prices: 1/2 bushel ($55 = admission for 5) 1 peck ($35 = admission for 3) 1/2 peck ($17.50 = admission for 1) 1/4 peck ($15.00 I think? = 1 child 10 and under) Quantity is certainly your friend here. Not an issue for us because we eat so many (enjoyed over 4 while picking em.... They were good and couldn't help myself). We also grabbed some apple cider donuts on the way out. 1/2 dozen for $11 and they're the best apple cider donuts I've ever had. They actually tasted like apple and not just straight up sugar. Heat up in the microwave for 10 seconds before enjoying and chefs kiss. Will be back here in a month! Looking forward to some fuji and evercrisp!

We first went through the corn maze, which was really fun, even without kids. Then we went on the tractor hay ride. It's absolutely beautiful property and it was very interesting to hear about their farming practices. We had lunch which was delicious! Seriously get the Thanksgiving Sundae (there's no ice cream in that haha) - or whatever it's called - because it was FABULOUS and they run out fast. I had the Thanksgiving sandwich and it was almost as good as my husband's sundae. Over all a very pleasant afternoon and we'll be back to do it again next year.
