Service was amazing from start to finish. Nicole was incredibly attentive and made sure we were taken care of the entire time. The drinks were spot on, and the atmosphere was beautiful--definitely a great place to relax and enjoy a night out. That said, the food didn't quite live up to the same standard. It felt like more of a drinks-and-appetizers spot than a place to come for a full meal. My husband mentioned his burger bun was hard and a bit sticky, which took away from the experience. I ordered a salad with chicken--the chicken itself was tender inside, but the outer crust was oddly sticky and difficult to chew. We also tried the fried pickles; they were seasoned and battered nicely, but again had a tougher, chewy exterior. Overall, I'd absolutely come back for drinks, service, and atmosphere--but would likely skip the entrees next time. read more

We LOVE the building and idea of this place but it just falls short. We keep giving it "another try" but not anymore. Service at the bar was terrible. It was like they were fighting to not be back there. You could see the frustration in the body language of each person sitting here. The seasonal drink menu, again looked great but no one could make them. The young lady asked "the bartender" which was in the floor to make one and she admitted she never has and wasn't sure. We had to point out what alcohol was in the drink. The hot honey fries were not. They were overcooked and really no flavor besides salt on them. We went to this place for lunch on a Friday. The ambiance is exactly what you expect in the area. Beautiful, spacious, with nice decor and large TVs. We were seated immediately. The service was friendly and timely. We ordered pretzels, baby back ribs, a burger, and peanut butter and chocolate pie for the dessert. Everything, including the ale drink, was great. The pretzel was warm and fresh. The burger was prepared exactly as my wife had ordered and expected. And the baby back, oh my Gosh! Hands down, the best I have ever had. Stopped in after another lake day at nearby Moraine State Park (north shore). Sat at the bar & bartender Justin was friendly & efficient. I got the Blue Razz martini which was tasty, but would've loved to have tried it with the Pop Rocks rim that was advertised in the menu (it had a sugar rim which is standard). I then tried a mango IPA. I ordered the open faced meatloaf sandwich with bacon gravy. It came with cheddar on meatloaf & was topped with mashed potatoes. It was good, but the meatloaf slice was crispy hard brown in the underside & the gravy a bit salty for me. I still finished it! Their calamari had a yummy buttermilk crust batter that was flavorful, but the calamari was not very hot when I got it. The restaurant is a nice looking place inside. They do have a back patio o& bar outdoors too (which I didn't realize) but it was way too hot to sit outside today. They have a big parking lot. I'd definitely stop again. read more

We came here because even though we were supposed to be camping 20 minutes away, someone forgot to bring the charcoal and we did not realize until it was a little bit too late. So we thought why not go to a local place and try it out. And of course I went on Yelp to see which one would be closest and we picked this restaurant. They had a lot of parking so that was really nice and they were really super friendly. Whenever we came in. We were able to get a table in the back which was nice because we were out of the way and with kids sometimes being away from the crowd is always a good thing. We got two burgers for the adults and some chicken off of the kids menu for the kids. I also ordered some wedding soup because I just need to try it because it's my favorite soup. I ended up not eating any of it because my daughter decided that it was her soup and she needed to have all of it. The burgers were really good and they were also huge. We probably could have just ordered one meal and split the burgers in half. I don't know if maybe we weren't hungry or if they really were that big, but it was delicious. We ended up taking two half burgers home to the cabin. Then we also got some great advice on where to go for a beach outing from the staff. All in all, it was a wonderful time. We have passed Bens up hundreds of times, I always said we need to try them and today we passed it and I turned around Best move we ve made in a while. Im not too impressed with the eateries in the area but Bens was great from start to finish. greeted as we walked in, our server Alecia I believe was her name was very pleasant. Nice atmosphere. The food was prepared perfectly and had wonderful flavor. (Chicken mango stirfry and the Chicken and rice with pepper sauce. The coconut cream pie with oatmeal crust is the best Ive had in a long time and the cheesecake with Cia lemon and blueberry was insane. Thank you for a pleasant experience. First time we ever visited was for my son's 21st birthday. When you first walk in you get the patriotic atmosphere, which was awesome. The food was amazing and the service was exceptional. My wife and I have been going to Bens for 7+ years. We live just down the road. Unfortunately the trend in the quality of their food has been downward in the past year or so. During a recent visit about a week ago, things hit a new low. Both of our dishes came out cold, and my catfish dish (one of their specials that day) was essentially raw in the middle. We were comped that meal, and received a free dessert (their always excellent coconut cream pie). Even with the free stuff, we're thinking it's a harder and harder choice to return with the cost of dining out going up so much lately. Shame, since we love the location and the venue, and the service - including this time - is typically very good. But the kitchen has really lost a step that needs to be improved before we would recommend Ben's to friends. read more

I recently had lunch at Ben Franklin's Taproom & Grille with my wife and mother-in-law. We three enjoyed Left Hand Brewing Company's Milk Stout Nitro drafts. The handhelds were yummy: I had a Rodeo Burger and the ladies had the Prime Rib Sandwich. We each had a side of fries: not the best fries we've ever had (that's a high bar), but pretty good. No fries were left behind. Service was friendly and fast, and we scored the last available window-side booth. This is not a dimly lit, gloomy venue like many taprooms. There were a number of TVs on, which I'm generally not in favor of ... but hey, it's a taproom. If you're traveling on SR-422 between I-79 and New Castle, this is an easy off / easy on meal stop option with ample parking. read more

this is a nice place! it's got some things i really like. - a bar that is long and deep made of wood. set up at the perfect height for eating and having a beer. - a lot of taps! like more than 20? didn't count. mainly kegs of micro-brews. along with Blue Moon and Guinness. so, good for me and Linda. - the menus at the bar are daily specials, regular food, beers, wine list, specialty drinks. all on their own page, and in a clipboard. nice! got prime rib dinners. comes with two sides. i got baked and onion soup. wife got salad and fries. i did the usual ask for hot baked potato, and assumed wife's fries would be hot, they weren't. the baked potato was under 100 degrees, fries same. i worked in a restaurant for years. this is not hard to get right. it means whoever is in charge of setups is lazy or really doesn't care. complaint? nah, same at most places. what impressed me was how well the barmaid and the floor manager took care of it. i got a warmer potato. same one nuked for 1 minute. wife got freshly made fries. they were really good. seasoned and hot. not twice cooked so not crisp, but they were good. the prime rib was carved roasted prime rib, finished to temp on a grill. i enjoyed it. it was very good. this cook was undercooking the prime rib, even though finishing it on the grill. wife ordered medium, came back med rare. i got med rare, got back rare. which is great. i love rare. and it had a very good beefy taste. and mushrooms that covered it completely. overall, kitchen just doing their job. front of house, doing a great job! seriously great service! i'll be back here. and trying other menu items. it's too nice a place to not go back for a potato. and they have a huge back patio and dining area. this place has a great environment, very friendly staff. and the other patrons were very friendly. this will be a great place to go when weather warms up so they can open the patio. oh, and the onion soup was hot as heck and delicious. that was great. Hit up Ben Franklin's for a late lunch after hiking at McConnell's Mills. We've been told about this place a few times and now I regret not eating here every time I'm in the area. Good sized pub in Newcastle. We originally planned on visiting a brewery in Slippery Rock, but North Country wasn't opening until 2pm, so we Yelped this place. Nice place with plenty of seating. We sat at the bar in between the TVs. The tap list was very eclectic and had a wide range of styles. Beers included Bells Double Cream stout, Warlock by Southern Tier, and Mortals Keys IPA. Flights and growler fills were available. The menu wasn't too large and specials were available. My buddy got the lamb tacos (loved them and especially the garlic sauce) and I had a cheeseburger, perfectly cooked to me preference of medium rare. Staff was friendly and informative. I was with 2 friends today when we went to Ben Franklin's Taproom & Grille. I will start by saying that we are all looking forward to our next visit. Every aspect of our experience was well above excellent. Our waitress was genuinely welcoming, efficient and appropriately attentive. The food was delicious. We ordered: Open Faced Meatloaf Sandwich, Pulled Pork Sandwich with Fries, Chicken Salad. All 3 selections were exceptional and the portions were more than generous. During our visit we had the Filet Steak Sandwich with fresh cut fries, Fish Tacos with house potato chips and I tried one of there seasonal drinks. Everything was delicious and the server was great. Filet Steak Sandwich Filet topped with grilled onions, grilled banana peppers, mozzarella and served on a fresh Syrian bun. We found this place by searching Yelp right after hiking at McConnell's Mill. It was less than 3 miles from the trailhead so perfect location. We had 4 of us. Me: Pulled pork Mac - Ahhhhh-mazing! Filling and delicious. Hubby: Hell's Hollow Burger - Delicious! Daughter: Bavarian pretzels and fries - so so good! Son: Boneless chicken bites and fries - fries were just the right amount of crispy. Tasty. The frozen Strawberry daiquiri was a little watery but still very flavorful. The kids shared peanut butter pie and devoured it. Our server was Rachelle and seriously could not have been nicer and more professional. She made us want to make this place a "regular" for us and we don't even live that close. Thank you! read more

Today The Man and I went on an adventure on Rt. 422 and stopped at Ben Franklin's Taproom for lunch. We were both pretty hungry, so picking our lunch was a challenge when it all sounded so good. I chose the Chicken on a Rod and Butter Garlic Chicken Wings. Yep, I was hungry and hankering for some chicken! The wings were amazing - I love how they were crispy outside and still really juicy inside. They were bathed in a butter garlic sauce that had lots of minced garlic rather than just garlic flavored oil. It looked and tasted homemade. The Chicken on a Rod came soon after. The chicken was nice and tender with the right amount of char from the grill. It was served on a nicely seasoned rice pilaf and served with both pepper sauce and garlic sauce and Syrian bread. And that reminds me of something else I appreciated about the menu - the inclusion of dishes that pay homage to our own local Western Pennsylvania food culture, like Grilled Lamb on a Rod, Smelts, the huge Pittsburgh Fish Sandwich and Pierogies. The Man decided to have the McConnell's Mills Mushroom Burger, which was cooked exactly as ordered at medium rare. It came with a large serving of fresh cut fries. He has visited before and is a big fan of the Pierogies N'At - Deep Fried Pierogies with Bison Kielbasa, Grilled Onions, Beer Cheese, and Sauerkraut. He brought some home this past week and I took a nibble and it was very tasty. Overall it was a very pleasant lunch. Service was very friendly and helpful, and the restaurant itself was clean, bright and welcoming. There is a huge selection of craft beer and lots on tap as well as cocktails and wine selections. This is a great spot for families as well as those visiting the neighboring McConnell's Mills and Living Treasures. Stop by, have a beer and some great food. Pretty solid. We had the Jalapeño manicotti appetizer first. It was interesting combining Mexican, Asian, & Italian elements in this app. But it was really tasty. I had the Hell's Hollow Burger with Sriracha fries based off our server, Damian's recommendation. The burger was very good, but the combination on it was not stellar. Can't go wrong with fresh cut fries! The wife had the pulled pork and it wasn't bad. Portions were smaller than expected. The drinks were fire! Great atmosphere. Will return and select something else because our burgers didn't match our server's recommendations. To each his own though. Desserts looked fantastic! Will return. read more

Came here with my daughter after a trip to Living Treasures. The place doesn't look like much from the road, so I was impressed when we walked inside. We sat outside on the back patio. The service was a little slow. We were seated for about ten minutes before anyone even came over to get our drink orders. My daughter ordered a cheeseburger and I ordered a chicken Philly, which was a special for the day. She enjoyed her burger but I thought my sandwich was just okay - way too many peppers relative to the amount of chicken that was on it. In spite of the slow start to service, our server was attentive and friendly once we did order. In terms of safety, the servers were not wearing their mask correctly. Tonight was our 5th visit over the last year and it's time we ended our relationship. Our first visit, like a first date, offered excitement and promise for more. But as we got to know each other, the shiny edge wore off real quick. By the second date, the Frequent Rewards club had changed and by the third the same thing happened again. I had been bombarded by texts and emails with offers that by then I couldn't use, so that seemed very weird. But, oh well. Now, off to the food and service. Each trip saw the menu shrink a little and the service do the same. On our fourth visit, our server spilled beers meant for the next table all over us, and she was very sorry, but no one from mgmt came to see how we were, how they might take care of our cleaning tab, etc? Or how about just a "we're sorry, what can we do to make everything ok?" Again, food was ok but service was mediocre at best. Tonight was our fifth, and last visit. Menu has been cut back again to best sellers I guess. Our server was right over and asked if we knew what we would like to have to drink, but we didn't even have menus yet. Hard to choose at a place that changes their beer monthly without a menu. So, no big deal. We asked her to give us a few minutes and boy did she take us literally. She was back in about 2.5 minutes (the place wasn't busy) and asked if we knew what we wanted. We asked for some more time. She was back again in about 3 minutes, so we just ordered the first thing we saw on the menu. We ordered an appetizer of Spinach Artichoke Dip. PASS on this. It's as if the kitchen doesn't have a blender or an immersion blender. Huge chunks on artichoke that you need to mush up with your fork to make dip to put on your stale chip made from last night. Oily and separated. One of us had the Lamb on the rod and it was delicious. Had it before and it was the same. You need to be careful and make sure you demand they cook it rare or mid rare as they'll want to lean towards medium. Served with a pepper sauce and a white sauce. Not too bad. I ordered a different beer from the first one. Didn't enjoy the Firehouse Red that much and wanted to switch. Waited roughly 10 minutes and finally got the same beer I started with. At that point, I didn't complain and just drank the one they brought. Another party had a cheesesteak and it was bad. Very dry, overcooked and obviously tasted like steak-um meat. So, over priced as well. AVOID. SKIP Desserts. Sitting in fridge at end of bat for gif knows how long. For a place that had so much promise and has, or had such great food, it's a shame to see you go. read more

If I had ordered to take out, this place would have gotten five stars! We got the meatloaf sliders, and they were delicious. Probably the best food we've had on this trip. Unfortunately, we were really disappointed by the beer selection. We had expected a lot more based on the place's reputation. What was perhaps the worst was the fact that there were 10 servers working there, and not a single one had a mask on (some wore them hanging loose around their necks). They interacted with customers, took orders, and carried out food with complete disregard to COVID restrictions. You wear a mask to protect the people around you, so for all of the servers to completely disregard that rule? It felt really disrespectful. We will not be back. read more
