Average bar food in downtown Mercer, PA. Pros: friendly staff, decent, small town bar. Burger wasn't bad. Decent Reuben egg rolls. Cons: no real negatives, place was just average. Nothing knocked my socks off. Summary: I'd go back if I am looking for a burger in Mercer.

I had a lovely dinner at J Hicks tonight. I wish I would have come sooner because it really was a treat. Everything we tried was excellent. Service was very friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed. The menu consists of a more rustic American pub-type fare. There were burgers, steaks, pasta, chops and sandwiches. I picked the New York Strip because who can pass up a juicy steak? And it was very juicy - perfectly cooked and from a local Mercer butcher. The fries were spectacular. I am picky about my fries and these were spot on. My appetizer was a sampling of nice crunchy wings with two homemade sauces. There a variety of sauces and heat levels but the Georgia Peach BBQ was perfect for me. It's nice to get out and eat again. You don't want to miss J Hicks for a nice drink or meal.

I love the look...the brick walls, unique light fixtures and items highlighting the area. If you like craft beers this is definitely the place for you. During our visit we didn't try any but they certainly have a variety. Ciderboys Hard Cider Peach Country - if you like peaches you love this cider P. B. & J. Burger - burger with bacon, peanut butter and raspberry chipotle jelly. I love the combination of the peanut butter and jelly on the burger. And the jelly has just the right amount of zip. Oh and don't forget the hand cut fries! They were fresh and tasty. One of the unique items they make are the Mason jar desserts I had the Chocolate Covered Cherry Mason Jar Delight. Unfortunately this one wasn't a hit for me. It was a little dry, very sugary fake flavor and not much of a cherry taste. They are always offering new Mason jar dessert flavors so I would definitely like to go back and try another flavor as this one might just not have been a fit for me.

Hicks' work very hard to make this a good local place to eat and drink. Stop in for weekend specials.

Not impressed at all. The food was mediocre at best. The waitress was with her Trump socks like him did not have a clue.

ABSOLUTE PERFECTION FROM START TO FINISH 10/10!…read more Perfection. Everything about Talbots is absolute perfection. I eat A LOT of food, and one common denominator I see among top-tier restaurants is that the owners and management are a direct reflection of the overall experience, quality, and taste. Talbots is no different. We felt right at home from the moment we walked in. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly, like lifetime friends. Our waitress, Teresa, was fantastic. She passed all the vibe checks and matched our energy immediately, all the signs of a veteran server you want guiding you through one of the best eating experiences of your life. She gave us her recommendations and left us to decide. We knew we were here for the #hashtagyouwont 36oz ribeyes, but we wanted to see what else was recommended since everything looked and sounded amazing. We decided to order a lot of food, almost everything that was recommended. This will be a bit of a long-winded review, but I'm sure the true foodies will appreciate it, so here we go: THE APPETIZERS The Brie: How can brie be so good that it deserves to be talked about first? I have no idea, but it was excellent. The strawberry-jalapeño jam, brie, candied pecans, baby naan, and fruit just worked so well together. An absolute hit. Pork Cheek Tacos: These melted in your mouth and exploded with flavor. They were also a really decent size, we were expecting little bite-sized tacos on a dumpling wrapper, but got two substantial tacos instead which was a pleasant surprise. Naan Bombs: Flat out delicious, and there were enough in the serving for everyone to have a few. Duck Wontons: So unique and flavorful. These were like little empanada explosions of flavor. THE MAIN EVENT: THE 36OZ RIBEYE When I tell you this was a perfect steak, this was a perfect steak. Cooked medium rare, oozing with flavor, and charred to absolute perfection on the outside. That is no easy feat with a cut this size, but somehow Talbot and crew made it seem like a walk in the park. Hidden under the steak, soaking up all the juices, are the house cut fries. I forgot they were even there because of the sheer size of the meat! By the time I discovered them, they were soaked with steak juice, but somehow remained crispy and soggy at the same time. It was brilliant, the fries almost had a poutine like aspect to them. Magnificent, completely unique, and made so much sense. As for the side of corn salad.... absolutely mind blowing. It just looked like corn with some sauce on it, nothing special at all. I am so sorry I underestimated you, Mr. Corn Salad. My God, this stuff was amazing. It didn't make sense to me, but I didn't care, I just kept shoveling it into my mouth. DESSERT We saved room for dessert (of course) and got three: The Chocolate Cake: A plate of pure, chocolaty goodness. Pecan Sweet Potato Pie: Spectacular. Coconut Cream Cheesecake: Wow. I am a sucker for coconut and cream cheese anything, and this checked every single box. THE VERDICT Throughout the night, we watched Talbot go up to each table to check in on everyone, and the chef even came out to talk to us. It was an absolute perfect meal top to bottom, start to finish. You can tell how much this entire establishment cares about what they do, and it is a direct reflection on the food. It's not often I can say a meal is flawless, so I have to give them their flowers in a long well deserved review. Five stars, two thumbs up, and a standing ovation for Talbots Taproom. P.s. Extra kudos for all the cool art and overall atmosphere. There is a ton of stuff to do outside as well but we were there on a chilly night so remained inside. We saw a patio, disc golf, and all sorts of other activities, even a tree house. We can't wait to make the hour trip again and enjoy all they have to offer once summer is in full swing!

Service and the bar was upbeat, friendly and overall excellent from "Good Morning" bartender "P"…read more Drinks were good. Wife had the Always Sunny which she enjoyed. Steak was well seasoned and cooked properly. I had the Asian BBQ, Nobody Likes a Party Pooper. Everything tasted pretty good but was all cool. NOTHING came out hot. Not sure how they try to keep the ribs and pork belly warm but it wasn't working. And not sure why the egg roll and potstickers were cool. Nice relaxed, comfortable atmosphere at the bar.

Very welcoming, cozy vibe. Menu was eclectic. Lots of great choices for appies and entrees. MaL,nR,IT had a chicken cheesesteak sandwich w a cup of French onion soup. He raved about it. Chunks of chicken, banana peppers, fried onions, and cheese on a sub roll. Naturally, he had to use a knife and fork. I had THE MOST AMAZING cheeseburger I've ever had... better than the old Mannions in Yonkers NY or Squires. 8 ounces of a blend of chuck, brisket, and "I forgot" on a grilled roll, with Swiss and fried onions. If you know me, I usually put ketchup on my ketchup. Not this time. My cb was naked, no ketchup needed. I savored EVERY DELECTABLE BITE!!! Michelle, our very excellent server, also gave us directions back to I-80 from the KOA, so I wouldn't need to rely on MaL,nR,IT in the morning.
