While traveling in Mercer, PA, I stopped by J. Hicks on the Square for lunch. After talking to the bartender, it was learned that they never pre-fry their wings so they're always fresh. More importantly, they fry their wings and beef tallow! Kudos to them for not using sea oils. Being a wing lover, how could I resist? They serve their wings plain and provide you with a variety of their sauces. The wings were excellent - crispy and clearly high quality chicken. The sauces were good, not great. Definitely would've preferred them to be fully sauced. read more

Cute place along the square in downtown Mercer. The beer list was surprisingly long, for such a small restaurant. Our waitress was very nice and friendly. It was a busy Friday night, with a band playing. Our food was very good. We ordered an appetizer to share along with our individual meals. Honestly, my buffalo chicken wrap was one of the best I have had in awhile. My husband had a Cajun fish sandwich and he said it was very good. The place was very clean, including the bathrooms. If we every find ourselves in Mercer again, we will make a return visit. read more

I had a lovely dinner at J Hicks tonight. I wish I would have come sooner because it really was a treat. Everything we tried was excellent. Service was very friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed. The menu consists of a more rustic American pub-type fare. There were burgers, steaks, pasta, chops and sandwiches. I picked the New York Strip because who can pass up a juicy steak? And it was very juicy - perfectly cooked and from a local Mercer butcher. The fries were spectacular. I am picky about my fries and these were spot on. My appetizer was a sampling of nice crunchy wings with two homemade sauces. There a variety of sauces and heat levels but the Georgia Peach BBQ was perfect for me. It's nice to get out and eat again. I love the look...the brick walls, unique light fixtures and items highlighting the area. If you like craft beers this is definitely the place for you. During our visit we didn't try any but they certainly have a variety. Ciderboys Hard Cider Peach Country - if you like peaches you love this cider P. B. & J. Burger - burger with bacon, peanut butter and raspberry chipotle jelly. I love the combination of the peanut butter and jelly on the burger. And the jelly has just the right amount of zip. Oh and don't forget the hand cut fries! They were fresh and tasty. One of the unique items they make are the Mason jar desserts I had the Chocolate Covered Cherry Mason Jar Delight. Unfortunately this one wasn't a hit for me. It was a little dry, very sugary fake flavor and not much of a cherry taste. They are always offering new Mason jar dessert flavors so I would definitely like to go back and try another flavor as this one might just not have been a fit for me. read more

Service was bad, Food was very disappointing. We are from out of town needed a spot to stop before long drive home and counted on help for recommendations and boy was it wrong. Server couldn't "make" hot tea, Did not know the beer selection and couldn't tell us the light beer on draft. Burger tasted like a steamed frozen burger, flat and tasteless. Flat iron Steak sandwich was tender and juicy but the bread to meat ratio was way way off. I only used half the bun and even then most bites were primarily bread. The au jus was gravy not au jus. Place smelled bad. Took forever to be greeted and get a menu. We had to ask for a menu, ask for silverware, ask to order drinks, ask to order food and ask for the check. Well, we went to Rachel's Roadhouse and the wait list for 8 was 90 minutes and they don't take reservations. Scrambling for an alternative we called J Hick's and they said they were working on a 30 minute wait so we went there. These folks could not have been more accommodating. Made special effort to get us seated and the service was fantastic. The place is very inviting and the atmosphere is very laid back. The food was spot on and well delivered. The deep fried pickles are pretzels and highly recommended. Beer list is also well done with a range of flavors and choices. I loved that they offer a regular choice of an excellent fish sandwich. I don't need three slabs of fish on a regular sized bun at my age. Just done perfectly. Cool place and I am glad we found them. Go to this place. They appreciate you and the food is delicious. We stopped on our way across Pennsylvania. It was worth the short drive off 80. It was the perfect casual place for dinner during a long drive. We got fish sandwich and tacos and the PB&J burger. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. They also had a nice selection of beers and other drinks. If we're ever passing through the area again, we will definitely stop again. read more

I thought my meal was very good. Extensive menu with many options. Started off with fried green tomatoes, which were exclcellent. For my entry, I did settle on the salmon which came with broccoli and mac and cheese. Fish was cooked perfectly and the mac and cheese delicious. Veggies nothing to write home about. read more

The waitress was excellent, the kitchen messed up our orders, no cheese on the burger, no chicken on the chicken salad, forgot an appetizer, and did not bring out a side for my daughter's dinner. Waitress fixed issues with order when we notified her, food tasted very good. Will give them one more chance. Without waitress' excellent service, it would have been a 1 star trip. read more

We stopped here recently after a recommendation and it was just ok. I got the chicken and waffles and the waffle had a weird flavor and the chicken was really tough and it didn't look at all like the picture online. My baked potato was way under done and the Mac and cheese wasn't too bad read more

I was in the area camping and never knew this place was here. We decided to give it a try and we're glad we did. I had a wrap and my bf had a steak. Both of our meals were prepared perfectly and tasted great. They have a very nice selection of beer on tap. The people were friendly and atmosphere was inviting. It's very rare for me to give a five star to any restaurant... but this place is great! It's not fancy however I was really impressed with the food, service, and prices! The waitress was terrific and when I asked for a beer menu and couldn't find blue moon, she suggested that I try the white lightning? It was fantastic and four dollars a pint! For dinner I had a lime chicken special that came with 24 ounce chicken breast, with mushrooms, peppers, onions, and jack cheese on top of rice & I got a side of broccoli. It was perfect.
