Do not use for pack-and-move jobs. I used Ben the Mover Guy for a simple move last year and it was fine, but my recent move to NYC was a nightmare. The final bill was more than double the estimate, and the service was terrible. The Red Flags: - Careless Packing: They put a heavy fan directly on top of my plants. My floor lamp was bent, my grater was broken, and the hands on my clock were bent vertically. - Upselling: I provided my own boxes and asked them to use those first. They ignored my instructions and used their own overpriced boxes instead. - Padded Hours: They left Philly an hour after me but arrived 15 minutes after I did. They also charged me for their lunch break and kept the clock running for 20+ minutes just to calculate my bill. - Poor Management Resolution: I spoke with the owner, who admitted his team messed up and agreed the bill was surprisingly high. He promised a refund, but only refunded the amount I gave as a tip, completely ignoring the padded hours and broken items. Incredibly overpriced and inefficient compared to other local movers. I had 6 days to move, within the metro area, and it was Friday afternoon when I knew. This was a relatively small move. I had maybe 10 pieces of furniture, nothing too heavy, and a bunch of boxes. I didn't need anyone to come look at the items given how little I had but for a bigger move you'll want to ask for that. The process was pretty simple with electronic forms in advance, deposit, and messaging. Again, for my needs, this worked but if you have a bigger move then I recommend a conversation of your needs. There was a delay in response time as it got closer to the move. I was trying to coordinate timing with my new residence but I didnt hear from Ben in a couple days. Didn't matter in the end but I was stressed out given the short window I had to move. The day of, Ben and his guys arrived within the 1-hour time frame they gave me, we did a quick walk thru, and they got started. I noted on yhe form wanting some items wrapped or covered but they asked when they arrived. Appreciate that because I don't really know if it's necessary for some things and it ended up raining that day so good for the fabric. I thought it would take 60-90 minutes to get loaded in the truck but they were done in 45. Honestly, I was worried they may damage the walls or chandelier with stairs and turns, but no problems. They had to wait outside my new place for about 15 minutes while I finished up with some paperwork without complaint. They unloaded is less than 45m and I paid the balance before they left. No damages here either. After a few moves within and across states, I highly recommend plenty of bubble wrap or other protection if you're packing yourself, and packing the right weight for the box. I learned from past experience not to skimp on the number of boxes, rolls of tape, or bubble/paper/peanuts. Ben said they can pack for you but thats another day of work. Had to move unexpectedly and my neighbor recommended Ben the Mover. I'd seen his signs around so I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask for a quote. This company is honestly a joke. I hired Ben years ago and he broke my bed frame putting it together incorrectly and forcing the pieces into the wrong places, which was very clear to see it was wrong. Fast forward to two weeks ago, my mother hired him again, even though I warned he wasn't great. His guys are super nice and we didn't have any issues with them, but Ben texted the morning of, pushing back the time because he wanted to "have his guys run an errands." My mom is super nice and what other choice did she have. Now after the move and unpacking, we noticed there is a large box missing with all of her dishes and hundreds of dollars worth of vintage houseware. My mom texted him inquiring about her missing property, with no response. She tried again and still got no response. I then was asked to handle the situation by my mom, so I texted asking nicely that he'd return our texts and said it was unacceptable to completely ignore us. The response we got was completely bizarre. Said he wouldn't be doing anything about our missing property because I was "mean." Like honestly the weirdest and most unprofessional business owner I have ever dealt with. Absolutely do not recommend his company, and wish my mom would have listened to me and read his other crappy reviews. Not even sure how he's still in business. Also side note, I am going through a process of filing my a claim against his business and I'm starting to believe he's operating under false information, and he's not actually licensed or insured. They also brought no tools for the job, I had to unpack my tools for them to take apart my furniture. Paid for furniture to be wrapped and protected, the owner "forgot to tell the guys to do it" needless to say my furniture was damaged in the process. Priced right if moving boxes and ikea furniture. We've used these guys twice and both moves were amazing. We originally found out about them from friends who moved from West Philly to Germantown. Before we found Ben's company, we used other moving companies that 1. broke things, 2. damaged walls, and 3. sent over people who were clearly unable/unused to working as a team. Quick note: I'm a wood worker and build/customize a lot of our furniture. Our pieces have more value to us because of how much time and energy I devote to them. They're also usually heavy as hell because they're solid wood. Whenever I choose a moving company, I'm placing a lot of trust in them. First move we did with them in April 2021 was just a few blocks away, but they made it even easier by taking not just our larger items but also adding our heavy boxes and my woodworking supplies we originally planned to move ourselves when they still had room on the truck. 3 guys were assigned to this job and it was a breeze. They were extremely respectful of us and our space, which was extremely important since this was in the middle of the pandemic. They were really nice too-- Unfortunately we ended up having to move again about 6 months later in October. We immediately called to schedule them again since we had such an excellent experience the first time. The second move, from West Philly to East Falls, was also fantastic. It was just Ben and another guy this time, but their 2 person team was extremely efficient while handling our items with the utmost care. There was a miscommunication on our end (we didn't tell each other where the movers should unload first-- my partner, stationed at the place in West Philly, told them the garage in the back but I, stationed at the new place, told them the front), but they handled it really professionally. Great things: - All communication was through text - The guys were super nice the day of, albeit inadequately trained and careless Not so great things: - Ben was very slow to respond most of the time. - He texted the night before (!) to ask if we'd be able to reschedule to the next day (Tuesday) due to "personnel issues" - good thing we had an extra day we could stay in our old place. - These guys are not equipped or trained to move pianos. They damaged mine trying to wedge it in the front door. No padding. If they had tipped it on its side (as I recommended and as any piano mover would). No responses so far to my texts (our move was August 30th). - The guys, while very nice, completely disregarded "fragile"and "very fragile" labels on boxes. We watched them carry those boxes on the BOTTOM of stacks of boxes of books and other heavy items. - I selected the Silver package: "Furniture is padded with tape prior to being moved." They wrapped nothing. As a result, almost everything is scuffed in some way and our mattresses were filthy. What mover doesn't wrap up a mattress? - All of the advertising for Ben the Mover Guy says "licensed and insured." I could overlook all of this other stuff if the guy would just even respond about the damage done to the piano and other items. Isn't that what insurance is for, when you damage people's stuff? Even if he's not willing to take responsibility for the damages, to not even respond about it isn't just unprofessional. It's unconscionable, and cowardly. And mean. Do not use this company. I will tell everyone I know. Moving is stressful enough - don't let these amateurs make it worse for you. Don't use them. PS - As I was picking a mover, Ben had some great reviews and some bad ones. That bad ones sounded like maybe they had never hired movers before, or they weren't prepared, We did everything right. Everything was packed, labeled, and ready to go when they got there. The guys even complimented and thanked us for being so ready, more than once. I'm adding this because in Ben's responses to reviews that are less than 5 stars, the majority of the time I see a reply from him turning the blame back on the other person. If you've seen his Instagram you've seen the "We are a 5-star business! Yelp just buries the good reviews!" I guess I only have myself to blame that I fell for it. The worst movers ever. He called the night before my move to change his arrival time from late morning to early in the morning. I reluctantly agreed. They packed up my house okay and we were set to leave after about 11 am. We arrived to my new location and started the unpacking. Only the helper was moving items into my new place, Ben never left the truck. Long story short after damaging many items, and several that can never be replaced, Ben made a false stated about me threatening his employee and he refused to finish the move. They were fast and efficient BUT they made a lot of mistakes. At the beginning of the move, we told him to be careful with ONE item, an antique given to me by my deceased grandparents. He immediately dropped it off the end of his truck (he did not wrap it) and ruined it beyond recognition. He gave us 50$ to make up for it but it's an irreplaceable item and held great sentimental value. Banged up our trash can and scraped several items. The moving company I had scheduled three weeks in advance reneged on the job two days prior, leaving me with no mover. I was moving from central Jersey to south Jersey, a 60-mile trip. After frantically contacting four movers via internet approximately 9:30 in the evening, Mike immediately responded. His online forms and tips on making your move easier were very helpful. Everything was very transparent. His forms and moving checklist gave me an opportunity to check all the items I needed moved. After giving him a minimal deposit, he provided a receipt and confirmed he would be at my home between 10 and 11:00 a.m. Ben arrived at 9:40 a.m. with two additional workers ready to go. They went right to work by moving my items with care, efficiency and precision. The two workers, including Ben, operated like a well-oiled machine. They never took a break. Once Ben the Mover Guy arrived at my new apartment, which had two flights of stairs, he and his workers maneuvered the heavy items with ease. If I had to rate Ben the Mover Guy on a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate his company a 12. We are hoping to move to a house within 18 months and I will not hesitate to call Ben the Mover Guy again. Initially I was very satisfied with the crew and their customer service; however when I discovered the crew had left my daughters entire room at the old house along with my lamp, clothes rack, and mannequin I was floored!!! Ben was great! I told him my situation and he immediately gave me a fair quote and timeframe. He showed up right on time and ready to roll. I unfortunately wasn't able to acquire a U-Haul truck (just the cargo van) and him and his employee made everything of value fit in that van perfectly for my 5 hour drive to NYS. I had a great experience with Ben the Mover Guy!! After receiving estimates from a handful of companies, Ben the Mover Guy was by far the cheapest moving service in Philadelphia. Since he does all of his booking by himself, Ben is fairly busy and might not respond to texts immediately. However, don't be afraid to be proactive when texting him! Ben still responded in a timely manner and I was able to set up an appointment over text with ease. Ben sent two employees to help me with my move from a 1 bedroom apartment; they were very efficient and it took less than 3 hours. The movers were polite, courteous and listened without complaint to all of my requests. They disassembled and reassembled my furniture and it made my move go swiftly. He tells my daughter he will be there at 9 am and shows up at 10:40 am. My daughter waited for over an hour and half. When I asked him for a discount he took off 1/2 hour and refused to leave my daughter's apt until I paid him. STAY FAR AWAY!!! HE SHOWED UP 4 hours late!!! He didn't call me to let me know he was going to be late. HE DIDN'T ANSWER MY CALL AND ONLY RESPONDED THROUGH TEXTS. He moved my things and then argued with me about only wanting to pay him the rate he quoted me, $630. With the initial $100 deposit, I still owed him $530. When I paid him the money he got nasty with me and was just rude and unprofessional. He said I tried to shortchange him when I gave him the rest of the money I thought I owed. I told him I didn't think it was fair to charge me anything additional due to the inconvenience of having to wait the entire day. After raising his voice, he demanded i pay him bogus pricing and acted as of he already gave me some type of discount. In total I ended up paying him $790 (with his "discount") I'm really disappointed with this whole process. I ended up paying him just to get him out of my house because I felt threatened by these 3 men in my house with just me and my mother here. Trust me, save your money and use someone else. I honestly felt like they were intentionally slow moving to over charge me. Horrible experience! I wish I would have researched this "business" a little better. Lesson learned. I'm giving Ben 2 stars and not 1 because he refunded my deposit. The reason for the bad review is for poor communication which ultimately led to cancellation. I booked him for a move and made multiple attempts to connect with him the day of my move with no success. He ended up calling almost 2 hours after my scheduled move time and did apologize. I understand that delays happen, however keeping a payer informed and managing expectations would've gone a long way and reduced my stress during move day. Ben is the real deal! He's really easy to get ahold of for anything, and he's very flexible in the event your plans may change. Ben and his crew arrived on time the day of my move and had everything loaded into their truck in no time. All you need to do is pack and let them know what's going. They had it moved into my new place quickly as well and know how to navigate through tight stairwells and doorways. I cannot recommend Ben enough. He has his own truck and you can tell he's been doing this for a long time. I wish I could give 3.5 stars. I had a deadline to move my items out of my apartment and the guys got it done with 5 mins to spare. They did what we asked, but along the way things were dropped, knocked over etc. One of the movers told me I should watch the Netflix special regarding becoming a minimalist considering all of the things I had. Not his place to give me his opinion, but I didn't argue because I didn't want my things to be messed up half way through the move. Just glad they showed up and did the job because the next day the movers who were supposed to move me into my new apt didn't even show so at least these guys showed up. Ben was super helpful and professional. He communicated with me throughout the day, and moved my furniture quickly. Unfortunately, my sofa needed to be taken apart because it would not fit down the stairs. Ben did not have the proper tools so he went to Home Depot, and came back to take it apart. He moved it, and put it back together again in very little time. I don't know what I would of done if it wasn't for Ben. At first, I was considering asking Friends to help me move, but I'm glad I didn't. I couldn't be happier with my decision. While looking for a moving company I came across Ben the Mover Guy. We talked on the phone about moving my 3 bedroom house into a storage unit, as my home was sold and I waited for my new home to be ready. A moving date was set, I provided him with an inventory list, signed his contract and paid my deposit. The Monday before my scheduled move I hadn't heard anything from Ben, so I decided to wait a few more days before calling or texting him. It was the day before my move (Thursday) and I still hadn't received any confirmation, so I called to make sure everything was still a go. I'm so glad I called because it WASN'T! He answers and says something came up that he couldn't foresee and he won't be able to provide his services for my scheduled move (Friday), which was the next day! (Of course I start freaking out because my closing for my old house is in 3 days (Monday morning) and I need to be all moved out.) He tells me his buddy also has a moving company, but can't move me until Saturday. Ben also tells me he will be sending my deposit back to me since I wasn't using his company any longer. So of course I have no other choice but to move my schedule around so I'm available sat for my move with this other company. Long story short... if I hadn't have called Ben when would I have known he was canceling my move?? I gave him 2 stars because he did find me another moving company (that did an AMAZING job) and I wasn't stuck trying to find one with 1 day notice. Just when I thought everything is going pretty smooth I had to reach back out to Ben about receiving my deposit back. I paid him via PayPal, sent his my receipt of the payment and I sent his my CashApp as a means for my payment back. Horrible through and through. Difficult to get in contact with Ben from the start, and communication did not improve from there. He had told me the deposit would be $170 so I went on the site provided to pay and it was $195 plus a 4% service charge for using a credit card that I wasn't told about. There is no option to pay this deposit via cash to avoid the fee so really it was almost $35 more than what I was told. I had to reach out several times to confirm the appropriate deposit amount before he responded. Twelve hours before the move, he texted me to say "I was not able to secure a second truck so will have to use one truck. We will knock off 30 minutes from the final clock to cancel out the 2nd trip drive time" (which would have been appropriate as it was a 15 minute drive between locations). The crew DIDNT make two trips though. They squeezed as much as they could into the truck, which I thought would be great because it would save time but they ended up squashing most boxes including once clearly labeled with "Nothing on Top" just so they wouldn't have to do a second trip. Two of our tvs went into one of the mover's car because they didn't fit on the truck. They left things behind at our home including a few lamps and some shelving because they didn't fit in the truck. I had selected the Silver Service package to have our furniture wrapped prior to being packed on the truck, but none of our furniture was protected. Two wood pieces (costing ~$300 and ~$400 each) were scratched and our blue couch (sort of a robin's egg blue) was dirty because they had put it on its side on the floor of their truck. Then it down poured for quite some time during our move. The guys waited over 30 minutes for the rain to slow, and rather than charge me a different rate for this time I was still charged full price. The rain cost me an extra $85. I can sort of understand this as it is still time but maybe there's like a half price rate for things like that? It wasnt active labor time so it was quite frustrating. Then when we asked to address the damage before paying the bill, the crew leader said "this has never happened to me before I'm not sure what we do here" and tried to play like he didnt know what to do. We called Ben and after multiple attempts to get through to him and sending pictures he offered a measly $25 off the bill. We said we wanted to file an insurance claim, as everything on signs and trucks and their website says they're "licensed and insured", however Ben said we "wouldn't be doing that". He then offered us $50 off the bill. We said that wasn't enough but in the end had no choice as we wanted these people out of our house. He was the most frustrating person to work with so we gave up and decided we would take action other ways. On top of all this, the one guy who seemed to be the head of the crew insisted that he would take apart and reassemble our couch to get it into the basement. It was no more than a dozen bolts and such to get the legs off. It wasn't until he was handing us the bill that he decided to tell us that he "lost one of the bolts" but that he "made it really tight so it'll be good don't worry." We have children and anyone who has both children and furniture knows that there is rarely gentle sitting. I am worried this is going to fall apart and hurt one of the kids. We ended up spending over $1000 for a total of 4 hours of active moving of a 3 bedroom house 15 minutes away. To top things off, a member of the crew came up to me as we were dealing with this and said "You are really nice people. I'm so sorry this is what you're dealing with". Ben and his colleague were great and I would definitely hire them again. They were timely, professional, and friendly. All of my furniture was moved efficiently. I can imagine it was difficult to maneuver some of the pieces because the bed had to be taken apart and taken down a narrow spiral staircase, and they did a great job with it. We moved July 8, 2017 and our original help we had lined up for our move couldn't make it. With 5 days notice, on 4th of July weekend, I went through all the reviews and contacted two dozen companies to find someone available last minute with good reviews. Ben was available, had great reviews, was insured, and responded promptly via text message. We booked three movers for three hours. Our priority was to have movers help get big items out of the old and into the new apartment. Ben and his two helpers showed up on time, but this is where we stopped being impressed with his service. One guy appeared to be hungover, only made a few loads, and was sent home within an hour. So now we're down to two guys. I was disappointed as there was no sense of urgency, no energy, with Ben's helper clearly not being used to this type of work. Our 3 hour job got pushed to four hours, they barely got it done in that time and that was with my husband and I loading and unloading with them. In the end, we were also charged the 3-man rate for the first hour, even though we definitely didn't get an hour's work out of the 3rd guy and only having 2 guys delayed our progress and disrupted the timing of the day. We had recently moved into our old apartment only 9 months prior and had hired a crew to help unload. Those guys were fast, efficient, and polite. Ben and his partner did an awesome job. I honestly was not sure it would even be possible to fit my couch through the narrow stairway of my walk-up, but Ben figured out how to take the couch apart into pieces that would fit, then perfectly reconstruct it like new. THe and his partner even moved an extremely heavy fireplace insert up a flight of stairs, making it look easy. He was professional, courteous, and honest. Highly recommend! read more

He and his team were incredibly nice and incredibly professional, and I was very impressed by how efficiently and corner-consciously they worked - very quick but not a scratch anywhere on any of our walls or possessions. His rates were very reasonable given his incredible quality of service, and he takes point-of-care credit card payments via Square which is a huge plus. Bens team are professional, manage time really well, and Ben is very funny and professional. Would recommend him in a heart beat again! He's got clean and well kept moving equipment a respectful and kind hearted team: He has very reasonable rates and has been in the industry for a long time! Bens personality itself also one that will brighten your day and make you smile and then make you laugh. He is hilarious and always keeps the jokes going while he work.
