This place is a winner! Lovely ambiance and pretty delicious food as well! Each one of their vegetarian entrees has a distinct and unique flavor. We ordered a medium spicy level which was sufficient for someone who enjoys a little spice but not too overwhelming. We had the Malai Kofta, Paneer Masala, Diwani Handi, Baigan Mirchi Ka Sagan and Aloo Gobi. The Baigan Mirchi Ka Sagan and Diwani Handi were something different than my usual order. The Eggplant dish was rather sweet since it was made w/ a coconut curry but cool since this is not something you'll always see at a indian restaurant. Same with the Diwani Handi - also not as common but was an fresh mix of sauteed veggies with indian spices (no gravy). The Paneer Masala and Malai Kofta were good- both had different distinct gravy and flavor. The Rosemary Naan and Laccha parantha were also well made w/ a tandoor. They had some other great appetizer options like Kohlapur Misal and fresh kachoris which I have yet to try. From my understanding this used be Saffron, never visited before so not sure how mgmt or the chef changed but I really enjoyed my dinner here and would totally recommend it to anyone in the area! This place is BYOB and has ample parking. The service was equally excellent (really appreciated them adjusting the temp for my grandparents who feel cold easily). We've had a number of favorite Indian places over the years (Bhoj in Elmwood Park comes to mind), but the upscale Benares in Wyckoff is head and shoulders above anything we've enjoyed locally. In fact, it's not simply a great Indian restaurant, it's a great restaurant - period. Ranbir Bhatia and his staff provide welcoming, attentive and knowledgeable service - and the food is absolutely next level. Every one of the starters we've ordered has been excellent, but the Crab Chettinadu is our go-to. All the "regular" favorites are here, of course - any of the Saags are amazing - but there are dishes, and flavors, here that I've never before seen or tasted. For example, the Biryani, steamed in its pot with a bread "lid" that bakes during cooking, is unique and wonderful. At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, I think Benares is Michelin-star quality - and I promise that this is not a paid endorsement. I just think you'll be very happy you visited. read more

Went to Benares with 4 other family members. Great Food and Service. All the dishes we tried were Great. My wife does not like spicy food and was skeptical of wether there would be much to choose from, but most of the dishes were not spicy and she enjoyed everything. they charge you 21 dollars plus tax on a baby sized bowl of masala and they say having 4 small bites of chicken is enough is insane. When i called thinking it was a mistake they told me because i got a piece of naan it was rightly sized to the cost and the meal. This did not deserve our business when real restaurants that are struggling and doing things right there are businesses scalping customers because they gave you a piece of flat bread lol. Be real. SORRY TO SAY...AWFUL I thought I would give a local restaurant some business plus I never dined there. I'm sorry to say the food was awful. I ordered the "prix fixe" of choosing an appetizer plus entree. This also came with nan. I chose aloo tikki and the standard chicken tikka masala. The flavors of the appetizer were promising that's when it went down hill. The nan was basically pita bread. The 4 small pieces of chicken could easily have passed for mystery meat. The masala sauce had a soup consistency and not very flavorful. They did give the typical Indian condiments but they too were lacking everything and could not revive the main dish! So I'm sorry to say the food was awful. I ended up throwing out half of it and my tummy remains longing for some good Indian food. That's just not going to happen at Benares. read more

I go here all the time to pick up takeout or eat in. got dinner here last night. everything was great and tasted amazing. except for my rice pudding. i got take out and took a bite of the rice pudding, it had a weird aftertaste that i never noticed before since i've gotten it here a ton of times. I took 2 more little bites to see if it was just some weird piece or something. but no, it had gone bad. thankfully i did not eat a lot and only had a total of 3 bites. i know these things happen but people need to be extra careful when it comes to food. i'm very thankful i noticed it had gone bad before eating the entire thing. read more

Stopped in for lunch and was so disappointed. My husband and I love Indian food, but this was just not good. The Tandori Chicken was all bones. The rice and goat meat was just OK but also had a lot of bones . There were a few other dishes that were so soupy you couldn't eat them with a fork. The mango dessert was overly sweet. Added to the above, we were given exactly 2 pieces of nan. An Indian party of three got a whole basket-about 3 pieces each. All the good reviews are true: staff is great, food is superb. Told the waiter what we liked and asked for suggestions. We ordered Achari Chicken Tikka appetizer, so good may get 2 orders next time and just have it as my meal. Main courses were Rogan Josh a spicy lamb dish with a nice kick, and Baingan Mirch Ka Salan, a delicious eggplant dish. The waiter did right by us. On a whim tried the Beet Root Halwa for dessert, minced sweetened beets with coconut which was different and very interesting. Highly recommend you try Benares. read more

Have eaten here many times and the food is always excellent. All the items are very high quality and the owner always makes great suggestions. The desserts are great, this time we had the atom bomb and that warm chocolate lava cake with the rose petal ice cream was amazing. The eggplant chat appetizer is a staple when we eat here too. I tried Benares for the first time this week and was impressed with the quality of the food. All of our dishes were well spiced, well executed and very flavorful. The aloo gobi was especially good. At many Indian restaurants, the potatoes are dry and there's not enough cauliflower. Their aloo gobi was perfect, with tender potatoes and the perfect balance between the potatoes and cauliflower. Really good food, waiter tried to warn us about the spices, which was appreciated but unnecessary. Glad they survived the pandemic and continue to thrive. This is by far the best Indian food I've had in a very long time. I've been to many places in the area and this little strip mall place out does them by a mile. We started with Eggplant Chat, which is just spectacular, Samosa, which were fresh and delicious. Garlic Naan a must, hot and flavorful. We ordered for our entree, tandoori lamb chops. Oh my gosh they were sooooo delicious, and so tender, melt in your mouth. We also enjoyed Chicken Korma which puts others to shame. This was one of the best meals I've enjoyed in so long. We have been enjoying Benares for years and always have an outstanding experience. Love to listen to the owner's recommendations and some of the traditions that make up the dishes. Highly recommend the Eggplant Chaat, as they cut it paper thin. They listen to your spice tolerance, but even though a dish may be mild in heat, it is popping in flavor--one of those great treasures buried in a strip mall. read more

We are frequenters of this amazing authentic Indian restaurant in Wyckoff (Boulder Run shopping mall). It is a lovely establishment with outstanding food as well as a superior staff. We typically let them order for us and we are never disappointed. MUST-TRYs: The beet cake appetizer, the fried eggplant medallion appetizer and the Rosemary Naan bread. Also outstanding - the Cornish hen and the lambchops (which can be cooked to your specification). There are many other delicious dishes so no matter what, you can't go wrong. We had a reservation for 10 people at 8:30 on a Saturday night. They called us at 8:10 asking if we could come early assuming they wanted to get out of there as soon as they could. When we arrived, we felt rushed the entire time, especially when placing our order. The appetizers were good, we enjoyed them a lot but the dinner was just ok. Since we were celebrating a wedding anniversary, we wanted to order dessert. When we asked for a dessert menu, they informed us the kitchen had already closed... from already feeling rushed to not even informing us that the kitchen was closing prior to us asking for a dessert menu, we were honestly really disappointed. We went for lunch on a Saturday and decided to go for the buffet after we saw what was available. The buffet was priced at $15 pp which isn't too bad. They had a variety of food which included some South Indian dishes of medu vada, idli and dosas, which i enjoyed. You have to grab the attention of a waiter so someone can make dosas for you. (A tip make sure you tell them to make them crispy cause some people in my party didn't get a crispy dosa like I did). Appetizers included some potli samosas which were really good. I enjoyed the dal makhani and coriander chicken. They were honestly my favorites. Other entrees include paneer masala, tandoori chicken, chicken tikka masala, and shrimp curry. For desserts, it was small Rasmalai and gajar ka halwa (which is a carrot dessert). Everyone in my party really enjoyed the gajar ka halwa. They are getting 3 stars cause when we first got there the food was kind of cold and only started warming up towards the end of meal. Also, we had to keep asking for naans instead of them just giving them to us. If I were to come back I would just get the dal makhani and coriander chicken. read more

We had takeout last night.. Quality was excellent,, We had: 1. Tandoori Chicken (portion was small but was excellent) 2. Butter Chicken Mild- (Quality was excellent chicken was moist) 3. Goan shrimp Spicy (not much shrimp but sauce was excellent) 4. Dawani Handi Spicy (Excellent no sauce but enjoyed) 5. Kamiri Pulao (Saffron Rice.. Oily but was very good) 6. Cost for all these items $98.84.. If you like spicy the levels are light.. Spicy is more of a medium level. You should order a level higher.. This place does not care about take out at all. They focus strictly on the guests in the restaurant and once every table eats they work on the to go foods. Very unprofessional when asked for the reasoning why they work this way. All customers matter not just the ones in the restaurant.
