The biggest thing QUIET HOURS... the rude workers in the office expect you to just run to your tent put the fire out and go night night at 11pm SHARP. Yes I understand shut the music down at 11pm but when kids and parents are screaming at 6:00am in the morning it's perfectly ok?! Crazy "double standards". ALSO from my years of River safety and experience the life jackets that they have, are ripped, missing buckles, old and are past their expiration... if you want to enjoy camping without a headache and cognitive people go to LANDERS RIVER TRIPS!!!!! There's a crystal clear creek running through the campground. The creek and the river are magical places for kids to play. They search for tadpoles and other critters and can swim in the protected lagoon, which gets deeper gradually. Finally, you can lay in the rushing river water for the ultimate spa experience. Can you tell we liked it here? The campground is run by a family who has had the land in their hands for generations. They are excited and kind about sharing it with visitors and have created an awesome culture of friendliness and respect among campers and the campground owners. There is a well equipped camp store with everything you might have forgotten and even local pottery. The bathrooms and grounds are very clean. They also run tube, canoe and kayak trips where they'll drop you off upriver and you'll finish at Soaring Eagle. We did a tube float down the river which was the highlight of the trip. There weren't many others on the river with us which was a special thing. They also rent canoes and kayaks. We'll try those next time.

I made my Gunks debut yesterday and was pretty impressed despite the very meh weather situation…read more This is about 90 minutes from my HQ so probably right at the limit of a convenient day hike, and somehow I've never really been in this area before beyond travelling past it going up and down the NY Thruway. Definitely returning when the sun is actually out. I did the 8.7-mile Castle Point hike (my gut says it wasn't QUITE that long, but I don't want to argue with my book) from the Awosting parking lot down the Mossy Glen Trail (yellow blazes), making a left onto and up Blueberry Run (blue) to Castle Point itself, and then went basically straight down the cliff on the Scenic Trail (lavenderish and formerly light blue), down the Rainbow Falls Trail (orange) and finally making a right on the Lower Awosting Carriageway back to the parking lot. Wasn't crazy about the $10 fee to park - nature shouldn't cost anything - but it is what it is. It's really a shame the weather was crappy because I could tell that viewpoint at Castle Point is legit - it's sprawling and you can see for miles in almost every direction. That's a very cool spot and easily the highlight of the hike. There are some interesting viewpoints throughout the rest of the adventure, but I'd say they're primarily of rock formations and water features, which have their selling points but nothing beats a view at the top. I'm in decent hiking shape right now, and this was just not particularly challenging for me. The only part where I was even a little out of breath (and it was humid, so grain of salt in that regard) was on Blueberry Run, which was a pretty steady incline up, but really not hardcore at all from my perspective. The drop down from Castle Point on the Scenic Trail IS a little tricky and you really want to spend some time there figuring out where your foot is going to go next. Compared to other parks in the tristate area, this one definitely has more hazards, cliffs you could potentially fall down, etc. But same token, it has a ton of these completely flat carriageways as well. It rained while I was on the Rainbow Falls trail and I DID slip/fall on some of the rocks at one point, but that's on me since I willingly came over here knowing what the forecast was. Wasn't impressed by the Rainbow Falls themselves, and neither were the other hikers who were there at the time. Maybe it was just not an ideal situation for them, but it's been rainy the last few days so unclear when you should take advantage of the optics there. The trail blazes were EXCELLENT, easily some of the best I've ever encountered. Each official trail had an accompanying sign that not only gave you the name of the trail, but a map of the nearby area, the grade profile so you can see what types of inclines/declines you'll experience on that trail and tons of basic facts. Really well done stuff. The bathroom situation was pretty good as well, with ample restroom options in the parking lot albeit without plumbing. You get what you get, but I'll take a clean bathroom situation in a heartbeat, regardless. Okay wildlife sightings. The rain I'm sure kept some of the good quality shizzle away, but I got a cool shot of a black vulture and saw an edgy newt. Worth the trek and will return for further investigation shortly.

The campground is on three levels, with nice large lots with a fire ring and picnic table. Wifi and cable is included. The wifi connection was pretty fast, especially for a campground. The bathrooms and individual private showers are nice and clean. I did use the laundry, which was very nice, but very pricey! $2.50 to wash and $2.00 to dry. But this is New York, so I wasn't all that surprised. The Pavilion on the upper level was staffed for most of each day, and there were all kinds of activities which the kids adored. At the time we were there, our girls were the only kids in the park, and they got lots of personal attention. They made several crafts, played putt putt golf, and went on a nature hike. Even though it was pretty cool they swam in the heated pool both days (it's kept at about 82 degrees). The playground is very nice for younger kids. We were sorry that we were leaving before the holiday weekend, because there were lots of things going on for families. The staff was also helpful to us, providing us with written directions to nearby grocery stores and pharmacies, as well as directions on how to take the train into the city, which we were also able to do. The price was higher than we usually pay to camp, but the location and amenities made it worth the extra cost. We are already talking about coming back next year! Another thing that was nice about this park was that they gave me the name of a pet sitter who comes to the park, so that we could have care for our dog while we went to the city. I have never seen this at any other campground, and I really appreciated it.

The campground is spotless, which is something we really appreciate. The sites are well cared for, the facilities are clean, and you can tell the owners take pride in keeping everything looking great. We spent our mornings fishing, afternoons at the pool, and evenings roasting marshmallows or sitting by a warm fire. The arcade was a huge hit, especially when we wanted a break from the heat, and the snack shack was perfect for grabbing a quick bite without having to leave the campground. There was always something to do, but it never felt crowded or chaotic. What stood out most was how comfortable and enjoyable the entire experience was. It felt safe, family-friendly, and truly relaxing. We made some great memories here and were already talking about our next trip before we even packed up to leave. Highly recommended!

I would suggest not to believe the sign saying 189 steps.... it is definitely more! Take drinking water because you'll need that for sure. We went back in August and the heat was definitely there. The parking lot was pretty packed but throughout the trails people were pretty evenly spaced out. Parking: most people park at the Laurel-House Road parking area, because it is the closest. Or you can park at Mountain Top Historical Society, the old train station, which an extra mile. Starting from the old railroad station is nice, you can still see some old tracks on the ground. Walk to the overlook is fairly easy, once you get to the start point of Lower falls junction, it is where you need to be prepared. I recommend hiking shoe, especially in colder months where the ground is wet and iced. When you reach to the stone steps, they can get slippery. I am surprised no one fell in late March. Half of the steps were cover in ice and people were wearing regular sneakers. Once you reach the base of the two tier falls, the view is tremendous. If water levels are high, you can feel the energy of the water. There is a lot of spray from the falls when you get close. There is short trail to the middle tier pool. It was iced up during winter, spikes will definitely be useful. The end was amazing too. So close to the lead of the waterfall. You can keep going and follow Escarpment trail and follow the edge of the valley. There is monument for fireman Frank Layman who died during firefighting in 1900, at his monument, you can see route 23A bend around mountain. And if you keep going, there are a couple viewpoint to overlook the valley. Nice break points to enjoy the view and rest your legs.

I drove my RV here, but on the premises, you can rent well restored, classical 3-wheel campers for a minimal fee and spend the night in camping luxury (and instead of my gas guzzling RV, I'll bring my car next time, instead and still save).... Tim, one of the owners, is great. From his story, he had no intention of running a campsite. He was in corporate management. He came to Happy Days as a kid.
