Hmm, where do I begin with. Let me start with what happened to the Benihana I know?! I have been to Benihana every occasion I can remember in TX. But never been to the one in IN. This was my first time here. The whole time I thought this is not how I remember it to be. And why are servers in so much hurry? Is this place short staffed? Our server was always in hurry, she forgot my drink in other table that I had to get up and get it myself then she didn't come back to collect the check, so we just paid at the front. Food is ok. They messed up my order too and chef was like 'that's what your server noted'. But Benihana is for more experience I guess than food. I wanted to share this experience with my niece. So, I had taken my whole family to celebrate my sis-in-law's birthday. Of course they put on a good show but service was not GOOD. Oh and not to forget, what happened to the Japanese birthday song?! I scheduled a 6:45 reservation for my family to celebrate my wife's birthday. I got a call just as we were arriving to the mall area that our reservation was "getting bumped" 25 minutes later, with no explanation or apology. Since we have young children, we masked up and went in at our scheduled reservation time to see what the holdup was. There were only two out of twelve tables sat! We were told to go outside and wait for a phone call letting us know the table was ready. What? 30 minutes later (7:15) we finally were welcomed in to get sat. What is the purpose of making a reservation? The food was average, portions were much smaller, and the tiny salad was just a joke. Even my 6 year old said something about how tiny it was. For a $200 family meal, I will take my money elsewhere. We've eaten at many restaurants throughout this pandemic, but I've never seen such a rude and blatant disregard for a reservation. Ever wonder what $50 gets you? When you order take-out, it's a whole lot of nothing... Unfortunately Benihana's used to be a happening place, but now it's a sad, junky restaurant that charges more money for less food and horrible service. The chefs are the only ones who make this place the experience it is, anyone else is useless. My husband and I order the hibachi steak meal and two portions of fried rice to munch on for lunch the next day. They apparently don't give you rice (fried or white) anymore with your meal as this is the second time it has happened- and the last since we will not be coming back. When we saw the portions for the fried rice, we thought it was a joke. They were TINY, not to mention, we used them for our meals since they didn't give any with it and the portions were laughable. Each time we ordered, they forgot to add the beer we had on there but didn't forget to charge us. To add, with this being the second time we ordered takeout from them in a close enough timeframe, they gave us an hour wait with our first order, and 45 minutes with this recent order. BOTH times we got there, we had to wait an additional 40 mins. It's ridiculous. Quality and quantity seem to be nonexistent these days. Take your money to Hibachi Express, instead. I have been to a few hibachi restaurants in the Indianapolis area (TOMO and izakaya) but never had been to Benihana. Tonight I got to try it for a friends birthday. The menu had so many different hibachi entrees. I was used to just seeing teriyaki chicken/steak/shrimp/veggie. I'm not saying that's a negative but it just seemed to be a more complicated menu. I got the steamed veggie which came with rice, tofu appetizer, salad, and soup. The veggies were really bland. I guess I should have realized they would be since it said "steamed veggies". But they weren't seasoned or anything. Everything else was very flavorful and delicious. I just wouldn't recommend the veggies, even if you are on a budget. Oh, and if you want to upgrade to fried rice instead of white, it's an extra 3.50. Ugh, boooo. I'm going back to TOMO Or Izakaya. Oh! Something I did like though - a lady came and took a group photo of us and then came back 5 minutes later. She had printed it and framed it in a Benihana frame. I never thought the day would come that I would be giving a bad review....Benihana, this one goes out to you. There were several factors that got you this 1-star rating, Benihana. We were rooting for you...but you dropped the ball. Here are some of the main factors of disappointment: 1. We came for a birthday celebration, my Mom's birthday at that and you were rude to her. Strike one. 2. Our female waiter/server barely served us. My party shared a table with two other individuals, and the server focused on those TWO individuals (that are considered "regulars") at our table. To the point that she FORGOT to get our orders and went back to place their orders...its funny because their order was not made until the cook got ours. Hi I visited the BAR on a Sunday alone. I ordered a drink a appetizer as well as a meal! My waitress was fabulous and her service was prompt.I was at the bar with only one other customer. was on the phone having a private conversation at the bar. Made a reservation for a birthday and waited an hour to be seated past our reservation time. The host and our waitress were not apologetic and the service was incredibly sub-par. It took twenty minutes for us to be served our first round of drinks. And thirty minutes for our food order to be taken. To order a second round we had to ask another waiter. Finally when we were trying to pay our check we waited fifteen minutes only to be told that our waitress was "on a call" and someone finally cashed us out. Absolutely abysmal service for a Monday night and with a reservation. We also never received the dessert that was supposed to come with our meal and they never did anything for the birthday in our party, even though it was noted in our reservation and we mentioned it to our waitress. I would recommend takeout but check your order because your libel not to get it all, me and my friend went there in said at one of the tables where they cook the meal in front of you, and we ordered the Benihana Trio, the chef that cooked at our table was absolutely amazing he was very talented he was extremely funny and he was an amazing cook. The waitress was a whole other story, the dinner that we got was a 6-course meal we only got four of the courses she didn't even bring us a rice until she brought us our check and we never got our desert, and then when we try to ask her about it she got very rude, we were so upset we forgot to use our $30 off coupon for my friend's birthday, we end up paying $118 for a six course meal we only got four courses we got treated badly, and all they offered us was a dollar off of our meal. Where do I even start...this place has declined significantly. Our table was a full house with three different parties. We didn't get any tricks; no fire, smoking onion train, smiley face eggs, shrimp tail flipped into the hat, beating heart rice..NOTHING. The server was polite but not very attentive. We didn't get any refills and had to flag her down to get our empty soup/salad bowls. Major issue #1 - A diner at our table was allergic to mushrooms which she repeatedly explained to our server. The chef began to prepare her chicken with the same utensils used for the mushrooms. She explained to him she can't eat the chicken because it's been contaminated..he tells her it's okay. Major issue #2 - My requested medium rare filet was cooked to well done despite me requesting the chef to take the meat off the grill. He cooked another steak BUT didn't even get a sear on it; I refused to accept that steak Major issue #3 - management did a poor job at handling issues 1 & 2. No apology for the chef's mistake or admittance that there was a problem. For the improperly prepared steak, the manager said that they don't always sear a steak..Seriously!! I eventually got a medium rare filet on the 4th attempt. Our table had to explain to the chef how to cook the steak on attempt #3. The 4th was prepared by a chef in the kitchen. I am glad that I've had previous visits to Benihana's. I really enjoy their "dinner show" when you gather around the grill! It's a really great time for special occasions. So much food!! I highly recommend it for group outings too! Tonight I joined a friend in the bar for half price sushi! (Weekdays basically during happy hour.) The sushi was fantastic! I'm new to the whole sushi thing though but can't wait to try more. If I hadn't been here previously, I might have given it 2 stars. Service was entirely too slow! I probably had to wait 10 minutes before the waiter noticed that I had joined my friend. Everything just took too long since it wasn't very busy. It's a good thing I was more interested in talking to and catching up with my friend. When we got our checks, the waiter was apologetic (good) and proceeded to run himself down (bad). He didn't say why things were slow, but I get that stuff happens or maybe he was new. I would rather he just apologize and thank us for our patience. (Or offer some other peace offering?) My friend mentioned that service isn't usually that bad. As I mentioned, the sushi was so good! I am a lover of all things spicy so their spicy dishes made me very happy! They have some cooked options for anyone who wants some sushi-like bites but doesn't want to eat the raw preparation. The dish came with wasabi paste and pickled ginger. I have been to this restaurant many times over the years and I have had a 3-4 star experience pretty consistently. Unfortunately things have changed for the worse. The overall experience was well short of what I expected. Service-this was the brightest part of the experience. We had William and Charles and they were both very helpful. We were seated a little late but we had a large party (16) so that was understandable. Overall the order were put in correctly and our drinks stayed full. Hibachi experience-this is where things went downhill. Our chef was named Olivia and she made no effort to be entertaining, or engage with us. We had to wait almost 45 minutes before she came out, and she basically just cooked our dinner. She barely spoke english, and didn't do any of the theatrics you would expect from Benihana. She was also very slow and didn't cook the food at the same time so as we waited for everyone to get food, out for cold. Also it literally took 3 hours and the other half of our party that had a different chef was done an hour before we were and had to sit and wait. Overall-I am not planning to return anytime soon, and I would recommend avoiding this restaurant unless you want some overpriced mediocre food. read more

Went there the other day. It was not busy at all so I expected we would get good service. The answer to that was absolutely not!! Had to speak to the manager a couple of times. I told the servicer as well as the chef to please not overcook anything and very little seasoning. Oh course they did not follow my instructions even talking to the chef. I was so upset that I spoke to the manager he said he could go back and try an make me some more, I said no thanks for the two of us it had already been 2 hours. I had had enough. The check came and per the manager he was removing my meal that didn't happen either ask to talk to the manager again. He never showed up but the server had my meal removed anyway. I could go on for more but I think you understand my disappointment. Oh yes the others at our table also had complaints. Benihana is a treasure. I go every year for my husband's birthday and the smell alone makes me want to visit more often. Yes, the whole show can be a little annoying by the 12th time and service can sometimes be slow or inconsistent, but flavor has been really consistent throughout my visits. Even though it's a chain, I think this is the best hibachi in town, especially when considering quality of ingredients and cleanliness of the restaurant. Very hot in here and super loud.and after a challenge making a reservation with the front hostess, we just sat down about 20 min after our reservation from 9:15pm and getting our drinks at 10pm. Been coming here for years because I love the food but it has been so different since the remodel. It's not the same. Our server is nice but it's so loud I could hardly hear him. Going to Benihana used to compare to the likes of Christmas or New Years for me...Now I just feel like it is the adut equivalent of Chuck E Cheese. I only seem to go here on Birthdays. Somone ALWAYS orders the souvenir glass. There is a show (its just not animatronic). We recently went with a party of eight to celebrate two birthdays (natch) one of which was for a twelve year old (hes the one who picked the place...nuf said!) Wish I would have read some reviews before eating here and my husband and I being charged $80 for the worst meal I have ever been served. Seriously, do NOT go here. There are so, SO many other better hibachi restaurants in the Indy area. So what was wrong? We met another couple here and ordered a plate of edamame. It came out cold. We were hungry, so we ate it anyway and decided to get another order. We watched as it sat up on the serving station for at least 10 minutes before they brought it to us ... cold again. All four of us ordered from the "six course" section of the menu. The ginger salad was the worst I have ever been served. The top looked ok, then the lettuce at the bottom was the texture of week-old lettuce. Disgusting. I ate about 1/3. Three of the four of us had our meat and vegetables brought to us. I was turned off by the appearance of my steak and chicken, as it looked like all it was seasoned with was giant pepper flakes and burn off the grill. Then I noticed an eyelash on my plate. I returned it. I HOPE I got a fresh replacement. What I was brought back looked quite similar, except everything was more well done, vegetables burnt, chicken dry. There was NO teriyaki seasoning or marinade on the meat. Most bland chicken and steak I've ever eaten, save for all the grill pepper all over it. I ate only about 1/3 of that as well, hoping I missed the eyelash that I'm sure was scraped into it after they threw my original back on the grill and re-served it on another plate. Speculation here, but with the service we had, I would not be surprised. While all of this was happening, we were still waiting on our rice and the sauces my friends wanted to eat with their meals. My husband had not even been served his plate even after I had gotten mine twice. The cook came out and asked what he ordered because the server didn't put his order in (nice of her to throw the other under the bus). At the end of the meal, we had to ask for our ice cream to go with the six-course meal we ordered. At that point, I just wanted something to eat that wasn't prepared by all of the awful, non-Asian cooks working, so I had some carbs to counteract the insulin I had taken. The server acted like she didn't know what was going on because "one of us ordered the six course, but I guess all of you can get ice cream". WE ALL ORDERED THE SAME MENU ITEM. Seriously the worst restaurant experience I've ever had, and by looking at reviews, it doesn't look like I am alone. I don't know how this place stays in business. The chef that came to our table was great and very personable. We cut up with him quite a bit. We did have a new server that was very nervous and not very personable. He brought us our check and did not ask us if we wanted ice cream that came with our meals, so we asked him if they still did have ice cream, which then he asked us what flavors we wanted. Three people at the table were celebrating Birthdays, which he gave us our checks and left the table. They knew there were three Birthdays but did not come back and sing. My wife had to go find a manager and ask if they were going to sing and he got our training server to come to the table and sing, then they did not take the usual photos of the Birthday folks and their parties. This place is the pits. The first impression I got was, dirty. We walked in around 5:00 pm and sat in the lounge to await a table in the the left section where food is cooked in front of you. As soon as we walked in, we put in a reservation to sit on that side and was told it was a 45 minute wait and we would be told when a table was ready. Having a reservation for a show at 7:30, that gave us plenty of time. 6:15 rolled around and I went to check if it was time for us to move on over. I spoke with the same woman who made our reservation, then the manager butted in and said rudely "I'm the manager you can speak to me!" I said "Oooook" and explained the situation. She then proceeded to tell me we were on the waitlist but had a reservation scheduled for 8:45. I politely stated that was not the case. She started in, saying I was wrong in a tone that you could only imagine. This lady was a Cat Umbrella Negative Turnip. When I asked for recourse and redemption, she proceeded to tell us that we would not receive anything for their mistake. Sorry I asked. Will never go to this Benihana's and I work right next to it! With so many Tepanaki style restaurants popping up, Benihana has some meaningful competition, especially on the north-side of Indy. Since their "show" is exactly the same as all the others (down to the choo-choo onion), food quality and price are about the only differentiators. Benihana's food was very good, but not better than some of the competition. We didn't try the sushi. But on price, they are the most expensive game in town. Wow - truly awful experience and I highly recommend you go elsewhere. It takes a special experience for me to give out a 1 star review (and I did try to give the benefit of the doubt). At first it took them over 15-20 minutes to give us our drinks, we then had to ask another server to take our order (30-40 minutes after being seated). Then they all seemed confused as to who was taking care of the table, and we had to request someone to serve us the soup/salad. Come to find out they had sent our food to another table(spoiler alert - they screwed up their orders too). It's been over an hour and the chef has not come out yet. I also want to note that two other tables (seated after us) were being served before us. The manager was requested at this point. He offered a few free drinks and stated that he would get it figured out and have our experience turned around...well he needs to figure out what that is, because he failed miserably. Finally the chef came out, which was on par for what I expect, but again - we had to keep requesting for refills on drinks, and waited another 15-20 minutes after the chef left for our server to come back to ask about ice cream. I'm truly shocked to see how long it took them to serve ice cream (I mean it's literally a scoop of ice cream). The food is average, and absolutely not worth the prices paid. They messed up the checks, and took a good 20-30 minutes to figure out that disaster. Well over 3.5 hours of wasted time. All in all - atrocious experience and I will never be back. read more
