I have a permanent disability and wear an AFO brace on 1 foot, which means I need to buy 2 pairs of shoes: left size 11 women's, right size 8.5 women's. I also am limited in the styles of shoes I can wear. BL has a fantastic selection of supportive and comfortable yet stylish shoes (TEVA, Hoka, New Balance, Dansko, etc.). Everyone who works here has always been patient, accommodating, and extremely knowledgeable. If the same style is available in men's and women's, Jay taught me the trick of buying the right shoe in a women's size and the left shoe in a men's size since most stores don't carry women's size 11 and the men's size accommodates the brace betters. And even if BL doesn't have what I need in stock at the store, they are always willing to scout the inventory of their other locations to have what I need shipped to me or their store. Maybe in the burbs it's ok to walk around in boring, uncomfortable kicks because you spend so much time driving around in your car, but when you're walking everywhere, shoes should be friendly on the feet, not just the eyes. I stopped in this store for the first time while waiting for a table at Pizzeria Stella. Okay, a lot of the women's shoes here are really ugly, but some of them aren't. I bought a pair of amazing boots for half off. The original price of $180.00 was the exact price they should have been selling for (according to internet pricing), so while a lot of the shoes here are expensive, it seems that's just the nature of the brands and not the store hiking up the prices. I've been to their Rittenhouse store a few times and never found anything. The sale section at this one is a bit... crowded, but the selection was good and the staff were really cool. I'll definitely come back next time I'm waiting for a table at Stella. read more

It's a great day and age for those of us with foot problems: shoe manufacturers have finally realized that there's a market for shoes that are comfortable AND cute. You will find such shoes at Benjamin Lovell shoes (in addition to many of their ugly stepsisters), as well as a knowledgeable and helpful employees who understand questions like "Is this brand good for high arches?" and who don't blink an eye when you break out your custom orthotic insoles. The only reason why I give them four stars rather than five is that their prices are usually the manufacture's suggested retail price. Five stars is supposed to mean "As good as it gets," and lower prices would certainly make BL perfect. But it's a small, locally-owned business with great customer service, and you get what you pay for. They do have really good sales at the end of the season. read more

So I needed new walking sneakers and my husband loved the ones he got at Benjamin Lovells in the Rittenhouse area. We were walking in Old City and we saw their other store and decided to pop in and get a new pair of shoes. Beautiful styles. I asked the clerk to assist me with sizes, when she returned, nothing I picked was available in my size, and I didn't like the pair she had picked out to substitute. So I asked to try another brand. I didn't like the first color she brought but I did like the second color and they fit well. All of this took at Max with paying - 15 min. During that time this clerk could not have been more ill humored. She rolled her eyes, sighed at me, acted exasperated with me. No one else was in the store! I only tried on 4 pairs and bought the last pair! Hubby actually walked out and said don't shop there again. Go to the store in Rittenhouse where they have great service! read more

Great selection of cool stylish shoes/boots/sandals. I didn't really look at any of the newer shoes that are out now, i figured they wouldn't have my size (11) most places don't. They did have a FANTASTIC selection of marked down high end shoes. I got a pair of Mephisto sandals for 29 dollars, Regularly priced at 135.00! The staff is really friendly and helpful too, the clerk who rang me out told me about the store they have in Baltimore because he noticed on my drivers license that was the closest location to me. In my opinion BL is too pricey for what they offer, at least in men's shoes. There are many other places throughout the city to find what the they offer for a cheaper price. If money is not an issue, sure, BL works, if you want to spend a little time searching you can find everything they have for less. read more

Always stop by the South St location for the awesome sale section!! Its pretty much the best place to buy shoes, PERIOD. I have bought several pairs here.. a Pikolinos and at least one Clarks, but they have TONS of other equally awesomely attractive and supportive shoes.
