This place makes me laugh. There are a million pairs of shoes here (straight out of China)... and the place is always crowded!!! Don't go here when you're in a hurry; service can be slow. They need a few more people to work behind the counter, or in the storage room. This pertains to any time of day/night also. Many pairs of shoes are always on sale!!! However... if you wear an average size shoe, you can forget about it. They do carry a wide range of lower-priced to high-end shoes in all styles. I can usually find something that fits what I'm looking for. I do return time and time again, too. read more

Another UPenn favorite. This small shoe store has more shoes than you think could fit in it. Their selection is amazing. Their prices are also reasonably priced. Where else can you find a $10 pair of shoes and a $100 pair in the same store? They also keep up with the trends for us college folk. But they do have a good selection of walking and orthopedic shoes for the older generation. I seriously love this place. Due to my insane allegiance to a certain brand of German boiled wool clogs, I scoured the city last fall looking for them and no one had them. Even Zappo's and other on-line shoe sellers either didn't have them or wanted an arm and a leg for them. NSS didn't have them in my size but immediately offered to order them for me and gave me the lowest price out of anywhere I had seen. Plus, they were super nice about it. Yes, this store generally supplies hippies with their footwear, but they have fun nurses' clogs, fun sneakers, and like Kimberly P. mentioned, and orthopedic selection for the older folk. This store is not for those with claustrophobia issues either. It's a very small shop with a ton of product, so it can feel a little cramped sometimes. I recommend looking at their window display before going in so you have an idea of what you're looking for. read more

I buy almost all my shoes here. You can find Naot and other high end, comfortable brands at prices well below other retailers. It takes a little bit of patience if you decide to come in when other shoppers are in the store because of the layout. You will have to wait while the owner or one of her employees seeks out your size in the store room, and you may have to wait to even ask for your size behind a line of other discount shoe seekers. For me, it's worth the wait and I can usually get in and out within a lunch break. I don't love the running shoe selection because I think you can find better, less expensive running shoes on Zappos. But if you want a cute pair of knock-around sneakers, you may find something in the $30 range. read more

I secretly love this store. True, it's tiny. And there are not a lot of employees who work there. And honestly from the outside you'd think it would be a really crappola store. But then you walk in to Danskos, Born, Merrells, Minnetonka moccasins and it's surprising that they have such nice brands-- many that are on sale! But now that I think about it: 90% of the shoes I've bought here have been for my dude. I bought a pair of Merrell outdoor sandals for him and we found countless number of New Balance and Saucony casual sneakers that he has loved here. All on sale. Anyway, if you're into those brands (versus Jimmy Choos and Tory Burch) you'll do well here. Bring your patience since there aren't many people who work here and they run out of sizes quickly. Don't let that throw you. They have good sales and good variety of a very particular style of shoes. (i.e. the practical shoe) read more

This is a tiny hole-in-the-wall shoe store that offers a surprisingly large selection with discount prices. There are both men's and women's shoes, and a broad range of styles from dress shoes to slippers to sneakers. I met a few women who raved about this store, and I checked it out and was very pleased. The only downside of this store is that it can get PACKED, and the staff overwhelmed. I recommend coming by on a weekday with crappy weather, if possible, to get the best attention from store staff (you need to get their attention to get shoes from the back to try on). Otherwise you can end up waiting a little while. But it's worth the wait...shoes that normally retail for $55 or so will often be listed around $40 in here, and sometimes less. The discounts from retail price typically range 20-30% and occasionally more. I also really like the selection here. I don't know how to describe it other than that there's a lot of the stuff I like and a lot of the stuff I don't like. What do I like? In men's, they have a lot of casual sneakers like Saucony Jazz and New Balance Classics, in a variety of colors, and there are few of the highly-cushioned running shoes that I avoid (and that hurt my feet). There are also a lot of solid-color dress shoes, black and brown, classic looks, and well-built, robust shoes. And there are moccassins and such. In women's, they also have a lot of cute, casual slip-on shoes that are really cheap. I really recommend this store. And although the staff gets pretty busy, they are very friendly and I really like the people who work here! read more

This store is my go-to spot for shoes in Philly - and to trek all the way to University City for one shop is saying something. They have a really cute (albeit limited) selection, and the prices are perfect. Think Payless, but much higher quality. Definitely try and avoid the after-school crowds if you can. They sell women's, men's and kid's shoes, and since the place is tiny it can get cramped pretty quickly. The associates are super knowledgeable and always willing to help. If you're looking for cute, cheap shoes around Center City, definitely stop here! read more

Let me say - I discovered this place when I was in college over 20 years ago and I lived in the area. This is my go-to place for cool sneakers and Dansko, Born or Merrell shoes. The store is small and the service is adequate considering they don't usually have many staff person to service the many people that frequent this GEM of a place. I stepped on a piece of glass that went through the bottom of my dress shoe and straight up into my insert. Today is nasty outside (freezing rain, slush, puddles, etc). By the time I got to work my shoe was filled with water. I was in a pinch and needed new dress shoes quick. I found this place with Google maps and decided to check them out. The majority of the stores inventory is kept in a backroom. You get the style you want, take it to the sales person and ask if they have it in your size. If they do, they will go to the back room and try to locate it for you. I got a really nice pair of Italian dress shoes, that came complete with a shoe horn, two cotton storage bags and a cotton cloth for polishing them...the damage?.....$28.95! Awesome! They have a TON of different styles, but that doesn't mean they will have the shoe you want in your size. The pair I walked out of the store with was the 3rd pair I inquired about. I got a good deal, but only because I was willing to settle. The shoes are great and the price was even better. If you need shoes definitely give this place a chance. I could have bought 4 pairs of the same shoe for what it would have cost me to get 1 pair somewhere else. From what I noticed, most of the inventory was between $14 and $135 dollars. read more

I've shopped here for a very long time-- close to a decade. Good shoes but one star for blatant RACISM in the new employee they hired recently. When I walked in yesterday I was one of two customers in the store. The other woman asked why pairs of shoes weren't displayed, and this was the employee's response: "Well, we have this problem with people stealing shoes, so we keep one in the back....I mean, I KNOW WHITE PEOPLE DON'T USUALLY STEAL SHOES but...." EXCUSE ME?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I was livid.She is officially the most awful retail employee I have ever met and this business should be ashamed to employ someone with such a wretched attitude towards the neighborhood's diverse customer base. Racism aside, she seems like she's an awful employee and will be bad for their business. She sits in the customer chairs as if she's exhausted and is really slow and reluctant to help. She's completely unpleasant (no smiles or greetings) and acts as if she'd rather you not ask questions. I sure hope the owners wise up. I'd love to shop there again but will not if she is in the store. read more

I wanted to become a regular customer at this store, the selection is nice and prices reasonable. Unfortunately I had a bad experience today when I brought a pair of shoes back purchased 7 days ago that were worn once. I explained how the shoes gave me cuts on both feet and swelling under my toes. Something I would have only discovered by actually walking in them. They told me no returns even for store credit. I was patiently explaining the circumstance and they began ignoring me while I was talking. Since they damaged my feet they are unusable to me. I will donate them to a good cause and not patronize this store again. I recommend they revamp their return policy especially when shoes are worn once and have been in a customer's possession for one week. read more

This place has some nice shoes and the prices reflect it. I really didn't expect some of the prices from this tiny little store but I understand why. They do have some cheaper stuff, and by cheaper I mean $30, which for me is still a little salty but then again I live off hot dogs and water. My friend Thomas tried to get some really cute sneakers there but they didn't have any twelves. All in all not a bad place. read more

This is a very nice store. A bit crowded with selections to view and customers can be over whelming. I go to this store all of the time and have to wait a bit. If what I am looking for is not available, It can be ordered for me and I can pick up when the shoe arrives. Lots of varieties and brands to choose from, be patient enough to wait. I just wish it was a bigger store. Back to school time for college and others schools is not a time to shop. It is over crowded and the patience is very thin with parents and their kids/students. I had a bad experience here. I'm a grad student at Drexel and staff at HUP. I stopped here on my way to a jazz show at the tail end of summer 2016 because the shoes I was wearing were uncomfortable. I saw huge markdows for summer sandals on the outside shoe racks, so I walked in to buy at least one pair to wear right away and potentially others that were onsale. Immediately the older man's (co-owner) tone was rude when I asked him if he had a few pairs in my size. I turned over the shoes to check sizes, but a few were in european nomenclature with respect to size. The male owner could barely contain his smugness when letting me know that no, the available sizes would not fit my size 9s. OK, I thought, maybe he's tired of folks asking him about size conversions. Whipped out my phone and did the conversions myself. I settled on a few pairs and asked to try those on. Once I'd selected THREE!!! discounted pairs to buy (the total was maybe $45), I handed him my credit card. I never sign my credit cards and instead write "ask for ID" on all of my cards myself as a foil to thieves, so I had my driver's license ready to give to him as authentication as well. When I gave him my license, he studies it for an inordinate amount of time. He kept looking at my license and looking back up a me suspiciously. Now, the name on my license is exactly what is on my credit card. My license picture is a current one and I look exactly like that picture in person including having the same hairstyle.. I finally asked him what the problem was with my $45 or less purchase and he says suspiciously "where are the glasses like in the picture?" Are you kidding me??!!! How many people wear both contacts and prescription eye wear. He was serious about there being a problem because I wasn't wearing glasses like in my license pic. I asked him if he wanted to see my PENN CARD as well. He became flustered then because, I guess, he didn't realize I was a member of the PENN community. it shouldn't have mattered. I presented proper ID with my credit card purchase. I doubt he would have given a paler person a hard time about missing prescription glasses while using a credit card for a purchase. read more

This place is great!! It's a small shoe store on Penn's campus. It has a great selection of sneakers. One day after class I accidentally stumbled upon this gem. I went inside and they had a great selection of sneakers, among other styles of shoes for men and women at great prices. I picked up a pair of Nikes, you can't beat the prices. read more
