I stopped by here on a business trip. My colleagues and I went on the recommendation of our local counterparts, and we couldn't have been happier. Get there around 130pm, and half the lunch items are gone. The menu outside of that for lunch is very sparse. I had my sandwich, the included potato chips, after waiting some 10min+ minutes of no service.. Paid my bill and left. Perhaps Dinner is better? But for lunch, go elsewhere. read more

I REALLY wanted to enjoy my lunch here. I tried their Southwest Chicken Panini which, by their description, I was very excited about. Unfortunately it was super dry and not particularly tasty. I had trouble getting past the unbelievably dry bread... The promised sauces within the sandwich were minimal and did little to help make the meal a bit more moist. I felt like I was gulping down water just to choke down the sandwich. I would have sent back the meal, but the server never asked how my meal was until it was far too late (and I hate to be THAT guy). Nice staff though. :-/ read more

My husband and I stopped in Helena for the night and checked out this cute and very tasty restaurant. I had the Thai curry bowl and my husband had the bison burger. Both were delicious. We started with the fresh homemade tomato rosemary soup again a real winner. Then we shared the chocolate tart which finished the meal off in a very superior way. And just a note of atmosphere, off in the distance was the lovely sounds of the solo guitar man playing his soft and romantic music to finish the evening off. Would truly return to this great place. Benny's is one of my favorite restaurants in this little town. They have a great variety of good foods and wine to choose from, and the quality is consistently spot on! Moving from a city is a hard transition to somewhere with limited dining options, and Benny's is definitely a date night favorite with their excellent menu. The tapas plates tend to be my favorite. I love lunch and dinner at Benny's. Always jazzy and delicious. They change up their dinner menu pretty often so the cooks can try new things and so the diners can enjoy a different part of the world. Once I went and it was a 'Night in Germany,' the next time it was a southern dish, all wonderful! It's a little pricey but everything is local so it's worth the extra bucks. I took my husband and daughter out to dinner and it was SO good! The menu has a good variety with gluten free options easily labeled. My daughter is picky and she ate almost all of her chicken. We ate here today after a visit to Gates of the Mountain. It was really good. It's a farm-to-table establishment with a vintage jazzy vibe. Big band music from the 1930's and 40's was playing. I had the Thai Green Curry. It was delicious. It came with a bed of Basmati rice that had orange zest and little lentils. Lovely. They also provide a slice of their bread of the day and a madeleine. My brother ordered the Greek Salad. Mom ordered the Big Sky Burger. My SIL ordered the Light Lunch (soup & salad). We all loved our food and tasted each other's. It was a wonderful lunch. Would love to go back sometime and try the cobbler. read more

This place caught my eye with the name. The Asparagus root veggie soup was terrific. Fresh slices of chicken on my green salad and home made breads, plus rhubarb pie. Wow. Just visiting Helena, and this is my favorite meal. read more

We came here unsure whether it was casual, fine dining, or maybe a quick Denny's type of place. I'm sorry but I still can't clear that up. The food quality and price leans towards fine dining, not so much the ambiance. We did get to listen to a guitarist playing some quiet tunes by the window, which was nice, but the chairs, walls, tables, the decor in general - its a little dated. On to the food.. We ordered crab cakes that were excellent, followed by bread with olive oil and vinegar. The issue we had - our main courses literally took 40 minutes to get to our table. So if you have a good two to two and a half hours for dinner, you're good. I had the buffalo burger, it was the first time for me tasting buffalo meat. I will say that buffalo mear is very very lean, and I could tell that because of that fact, it is almost impossible to cook it to the right done-ness. (lean meat cooks faaaast so to get a nice pink buffalo meat patty, I can tell seems very challenging) Overall, it was good, not great, and it just took way too long to get our food. read more

Not great. Tapas are a bit of a joke--they're just mini portions of entrees. All of tapas we ordered lacked flavor, except for the shrimp and grits, which were excellent. Waited 10 minutes to get menus, even though the restaurant was close to empty. Also, they were out of potatoes!!! How is that even possible for a restaurant? read more

My friend and I were hanging around in Helena for a few hours waiting to catch a flight, so we checked out the lunch options on Yelp. Benny's looked like the best shot, and I'm REALLY pleased we went here. Really fresh, locally-grown food -- nothing pretentious, just delicious. Very friendly service, too! I had the macaroni and cheese (with locally-made goat cheese), which was awesome, and my friend's frittata was delicious as well. Overall, highly recommended. Hands down the best place to eat in Helena. Never had a bad meal here but I love love love the Chicken Pot Pie and the Chicken Wellington. They may not be available since there menu is always local and ever-changing but you are guaranteed to find SOMETHING you will love! read more

Benny's is just consistently good. For lunch, there may not be a better restaurant in town. For example, my favorite day for lunch is Thursday because they feature a gourmet burger that is always quite creative. For dinner, the salmon bowl is always nicely done and the beef stroganoff is also excellent. The wines-by-the-glass menu has some nice choices. Make sure you order their sour cream cookie for dessert. read more

The Applebee's folk won't like this place at all, but if you like good, fresh food that is more than the processed food from a chain, you will like it here. Great ruebens and other sandwiches. The soups are always creative and special. I love their salads, which are fresh and explodes with taste. When you get a chicken sandwich, it is carved off of freshly cooked chickens. The service is friendly and good, but gets a little overwhelmed when the place fills up quickly. My guess is out-of-towners will rate this place high. read more

My waiter at Benny's was thoughtful and helpful but the food is just not that great. This is my favorite lunch spot, bar none. If you are thinking of having lunch here, stop reading here and just do it. Get a sandwich with a side salad or tomato soup! 5 stars for lunch! Oh and the iced tea is fantastic. Dinner....is a slightly different story. I've never had dinner here until recently. The ambiance was nice, not very busy. We were seated by the kitchen. I told the waiter about my dairy allergy, and he basically told me nothing I was looking at had dairy. Red flag. The waiter should check, not assume, since they aren't making the food. I was nervous after that. I ordered the pork and beans dinner, my husband ordered the fish Special. The intro focaccia and salad was good. My entree came and while the pork was good, the veggie side had butter in it. I spit it out to avoid problems, and told the waiter. He apologized, offered no remedy, then I could hear him go back and all the chef (after the fact) if it had dairy. The chef was like "ooh yeah, lots of butter." The waiter should have asked before the food was made, not assume. The bean thing on the side was bland, tasted like canned beans on lettuce with no dressing. Towards the end of the meal, I was actually done, the waiter brought out a veggie side just cooked in oil. It was good, and I appreciated it, but super late and could have been avoided by asking the chef in the first place. The whole time we were eating some other staff members were just sitting around eating and gossiping and flirting right next to us at the kitchen bar. It wasn't very professional. So, the service was disappointing, the food was pretty good and a bit overpriced for what it was, I give it 3 stars for dinner. Given the dairy issue, I doubt I'd come back for dinner. read more

Always a wonderful choice for either lunch or dinner. Prices are fair for the quality (almost everything is local!) and the portion size. Both the waitstaff and the kitchen staff are knowledgeable and helpful with any questions you might have - not to mention always friendly and welcoming. Meals are always fantastic (especially the beef stroganoff!) and just how you want it. Owner takes pride in his restaurant and it definitely reflects when you step in the door! I returned to Benny's with a group of colleagues to sample their lunch fare, but soon discovered that this restaurant has a Dr. Jekyll and Mister Hyde personality disorder. Gone were the knowledgeable and friendly wait staff, replaced by a group that was harried, inattentive, and sloppy (Spilling our drinks on the table). The restaurant was admittedly much busier at lunch than dinner the night before, but that does not explain the cold food our table received, stale bread, and generally unappetizing menu items we received. Surely this food could not have been prepared by the deft hand who crafted my delightful dining experience a mere eighteen hours earlier? I left half of my dish on the plate, as did most of my dining companions and the server did not even ask if we wanted a box to take the food with us. Maybe she knew more than I gave her credit for. read more

I recently moved here from Seattle and I just don't get what all the hype is about this place. It's stuffy and feels snobby but even worse, their food! And it's so expensive for what little you get! I ordered some bean soup to go. It tasted like old dishwater. It had little to no flavor, was watered down and dried up bits of ham hock that were disgusting! It was a bowl serving size but it was like $9! They added some dried up bread to go with it and thank god they did or I would have starved! If I hadn't ordered it to go, I would definitely said something. Oh, and it took like over 15 minutes to serve me. Ugh! Funny thing is, I work right around the corner from them and I'll order all over town but not from them again! I've also dined inside as well, again, snobby, stuffy, non-impressive and lacking flavor! Never again!!! read more

I've eaten here three times and the food has been very good each time. The effort to use local and in-season ingredients when possible comes out in the fresh taste of the food. I would call some of the dishes "fusion", but not in the cliche'd sense- for example, the curry dishes I had could not be nailed down as an indian or thai-style or whatever, but had fresh ingredients and an excellent balance of flavors. read more

I ordered some food for take out and I was extremely disappointed. I had eaten there in the past and it was decent but nothing I ordered this time around tasted good at all. I ordered the beef stroganoff and the beef was extremely tough - could barely cut it with a knife and the sauce lacked any flavor or salt. I also ordered the shrimp and grits and all I tasted was butter. I decided to order the market vegetable which was asparagus and they literally gave me 4 little "sticks" of asparagus. It's too bad - I was really looking forward to a good meal and it's so disappointing paying almost $30 worth of food and having nothing taste good. Maybe it was just an off night...I'll give it one more try before I write them off completely. read more
