I highly recommend Benold's if you're looking for a jeweler to do repairs. I just picked up three items (ring, necklace, and charm) that I dropped off for repairs, and I am SO pleased with the quality of work. Everything came back looking brand new and exactly like they promised! For the ring, I needed to add some gold back to strengthen the base, shorten my necklace chain, and a clasp on the charm fixed. I had asked for quotes from several local jewelers with good reviews and ultimately picked Benold's. They weren't the cheapest but all of these items had strong sentimental value to me, so I was more focused on the work being done right, and Benold's gave me that confidence by how they carefully looked at each item, explained what was wrong and how the materials would influence the fix, and gave me different options to choose from. The staff were all so knowledgeable, nice, and patient. The work was done exactly when they said it would be, and everything turned out looking perfect! Hopefully nothing else of mine will break but if so, I know where I'll be going for a fix! On an unrelated note, during my first visit when I was waiting for someone to help me, I heard one of the staff members help a couple shopping for an engagement ring. She was giving them detailed information on how to find the right diamond for the their taste and price. She wasn't pushy at all, didn't judge their preferences, and was purely focused on making sure they found what was best for them. We can't say enough good things about our experience working with Rachel at Benold's! We came in to get my engagement ring resized, plus a wedding band for myself and my (now) husband. Rachel worked patiently with us to find exactly what we wanted. My husband was unsure what type of ring he wanted, but was interested in signet rings, and Rachel was able to find a flat hexagonal design that he is absolutely thrilled with. I just picked up my custom wedding band and the jeweler did an amazing job. He used diamonds I brought in and made the band to fit around my engagement ring. The saleswoman also had him try to match the detailing on the engagement ring band. The staff was great, I had a lovely chat with the ladies there. Benold's jeweler is hands down, my favorite jeweler! I love that it's a local Austin business that's been around for over 85 years. That in itself, says a lot. Before my husband and I got married; we looked for awhile all over Austin and Houston. I like to compare Apple's to apples: My requirements was cut (1st), clarity, color and carat. I was obsessed with researching about diamonds, that I learned about the Lazare diamonds and other brands. I felt we got more bang for our bucks with the lazare. Although it was a few $K over other diamonds, my heart was set on the lazare bc the cut met the requirements that I wanted. Diamonds direct tried to compete but their GIA diamond was not in the parameters of an ideal cut but they assured me it was an ideal cut. I'm going by my research which I will post a chart of what I was looking for in a diamond. They also said GIA is better than AGS. However, I'm going to do my own research and decide for myself. Nothing against GIA, but I felt AGS was stricter on cut. Milton was so awesome that we came back to see him to purchase my lazare. Sad to see him retired but happy for him. Maria is awesome as well. She spent extra time with me today to convert my single earrings (tendency to lose them) into necklaces that I can layer with my other pieces. The converted earing looks great with my dainty vintage diamond earings that my husband purchased from Benold's as well. I brought in all my jewelry, costume jewelry as well and she gave me advice and ideas on how to layer with what I already had and how to switch up pieces to change the look. Maria is very honest about what worked for me; no b.s. sales pitch like many others that I've met. I'll post a few pictures and have the captions so that you know what to look for. Around 7-8 years ago, I had another local jeweler do some work on my wedding ring to try to get it back to its former glory but they didn't do a very good job of it. Recently I became concerned the diamond might fall out if I didn't take some action. I'd been impressed with the friendly folks at Benold's in the past when having watch batteries replaced and a ring resized so I thought perhaps they could re-work my wedding ring. I was given a very reasonable estimate and was told not to expect my almost 40yr old ring to be like new. The work was done in the time promised and frankly, I think they underpromised. I am recently engaged and the fine folks at Benold's have been wonderful helping to resize my engagement ring. They did a great job initially resizing it before the surprise proposal and a perfect job doing a secondary resizing after we realized I have extremely tiny fingers (size 4.25)! We appreciated her patience with us (I tried on a million rings) and that she was knowledgeable. Had the absolute BEST experience at Benold's. All of the employees are a class act and utmost professionals. I came in upset after another (big name diamond retailer in the Domain) had scraped up my platinum band on my new engagement ring while trying to haphazardly install a spacer as a quick fix since they had a 2 week wait for resizing. I brought it into Benold's and they assured me they could take care of the scratches and advised that we get it resized that DAY. They were able to resize my ring within 2 hours and now it feels secure, polished and gorgeous-- just in time for holiday travels!! Fourteen years ago, after many years of watching my wrist turn green from wearing $10 "Cucci" watches I'd bought on the street, my parents gifted me with the real deal. I wear it every day and after all these years, all the maintenance it has ever needed was a battery. I used to be able to get a battery for my watch from pretty much any jewelry or battery store, but in recent years, I've noticed that everyone is suddenly afraid to touch it. "We can't change THAT battery," they'd say, shaking their heads solemnly when they saw the maker on the face. Last time around, I ended up at a certain clock store in Austin that charged me a totally offensive fee for changing my battery. I paid it because the watch has so much sentimental value, and I couldn't find anyone else to do it. So when my battery started to slow down recently, I was determined to find someone else who could make my beloved watch go again for a more reasonable price. I called jeweler after jeweler, and finally lighted on Benold's. Not only were they willing to change my watch battery, but they charged me a measly $10 and it took less than five minutes. The gentleman who assisted me told me they were a family-owned business and that they have five employees who have been working for the store for at least thirty years EACH. People, if you want to keep it local, this is the way to do it. Excellent service from a company that obviously treats their employees well. My fiancée and I went to look for wedding bands and chose Benold's as our first stop. We were greeted warmly and enthusiastically, which for a same-sex couple is hugely important. Shannon, our salesperson, was a marvel. Because we felt we should, we shopped around some more and looked online as well. But we didn't find as good a selection anywhere else, nor did we get the reception we enjoyed at Benold's, so we went back. We took our kids with us this time and Milton, the owner, cheerfully showed our daughter some colorful jewelry (just for fun) while Shannon helped us with our final decision and rang us up. We had previously taken my wife's wedding/engagement ring in to get a quote for a resizing at another jeweler in the mall. We were certainly shocked when they came back with a quote of $750 for going up 2 sizes, and they wanted to replace the head for the stone at another $500. They did not get our business as we wanted to weigh our options including replacement. We went into Benold's on a whim since we were already in the area. Upon entering a very kind older gentleman named David started to help us. We explained our situation and he took a look at the ring, and offered to give us a quote. Upon examining the ring, he stated that the head was in good shape with just a coupe of bent prongs and it had 5 to 10 more good years of use before needing replacement. He then took the ring to the back to get pricing on the resize after getting my wife's ring size. He asked us not to tell him our previous quote until he could price it for us. We were absolutely shocked when he came back out and quoted us $145. We were stunned, but without hesitation gave him the ring so that they could resize it. He spent a lot of time with us and shared the story of how Benold's came to be and was absolutely a pleasure to do business with. Getting engaged and married is stressful enough, but purchasing the jewelry for it was highly disconcerting to me. My future fiancee visited the store and felt very well treated. I still feel the same way about my previous review of Benold's (please read for more details), but after working with Maria for quite some time creating the perfect engagement ring out of a regretful purchase I made a Samuel's, I had to bump up the stars to 5. While it took some time to get exactly what I was looking for, there is no other place I will EVER buy fine jewelry than from Maria at Benold's. I am REALLY particular and had something in mind that was hard to express because I am not experienced with the jewelry lingo and also had a limited budget to work with. With a lot of back and forth trying to modify my ring into what I was envisioning, I thought for sure Maria was going to get sick of me not being satisfied, yet her patience never faltered and she always helped come up with another idea for how to make it right. She never judged or made me feel like I was unreasonable or "too particular", and she genuinely wanted to be sure we were 100% happy before we gave her one single penny. Unlike Samuel's where they made a bunch of promises, pressured us to buy right away, had us pay up front before the ring was done and then refused to deliver on their promises. Bottom line: Maria always kept our best interest in mind (not hers), never pressured us to like, buy or settle for something we weren't completely sure about, and went totally above and beyond in customer service with a consistently warm and genuine demeanor.
