I DO NOT recommend this place unless you like spending your entire day waiting for food with crappy service. We had plans for 10:45am so we arrive at Bensons at 9am on a Monday. Thinking almost 2 hours would be adequate time to sit, be served and eat was highly miscalculated. Upon arriving we were told the wait time was 20 mins, however it took only 12-15 minutes, brownie points there (thumbs up) We sat and ordered right away within 5 minutes of sitting. Now, let the waiting game begin... we waited.... and waited some more. After quite a bit of time pasted our sever came over and said "it's only going to be a few minutes longer" (brownie points there for keeping us in the know... since it was taking an obscene amount of time). I checked my phone for the time and the clock said 10:12am. I was thinking "okay, if it comes out in the next couple minutes we can eat quickly and still make our appointment at 10:45am"... we continue to wait, my husband after waiting another 15 minutes asked the server "how much long, you said a few minutes awhile ago" she responded extremely rudely with attitude in her tone of voice and replied "I said it's gonna be a few minutes I can show you the ticket" and walks away. We wait about 5 more minutes.... it's now 10:30/10:35 and we still don't have our food... So we walked out without our food and will NEVER go to this place again. If you enjoy having someone waste your time and being spoken to very rudely then this is the place for you. Absolutely give these guys a try. It's a really homey down to earth place. You walk in and the breakfast goodness just invites you right in. I'm picky about pancakes and knew this is the place you get a pancake. I got eggs, bacon, hash browns and a pancake. My husband got biscuits and gravy. Both meals were rad. My eggs were fluffy, bacon crispy and chewy, hash browns were crispy and not greasy, my pancake was perfection fluffy, spongey, and golden brown. They serve it up with butter, and your choice of maple or marionberry syrup! I thought that was really cool. My husbands biscuits and gravy...OHLAWD. HUGE light fluffy biscuits and rich savory gravy with big chunks of bacon. They were AWESOME. The coffee was hot and my cup never sat empty. Really reasonable prices. It was a busy morning for them, but you'd never know it. A limited menu, but with all the favorites you'd expect for a breakfast place. We each had a wonderful omelet (her veggie, he cheese only), with hash browns, which was perfect. The missus enjoyed a tasty biscuit of jalapeños and bacon with her omelet and he dived into thick rye bread... yummy on both accounts. BTW, we loved this odd plant just outside the window and took a picture of it to ask our favorite nurseryman at home... only to find there was a print out all about the plant right behind me! read more

Went in for breakfast since it was within walking distance from our motel. The first thing that hits us is the smell. It should smell like coffee and bacon, but instead smelled like a wet, abandoned old building. That old moldy wood smell. It over powered the meal. The hostess was abrupt almost to rude, but the waitress (Zoe?) was sweet and attentive and did a great job. I ordered biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were huge and tasty, but the gravy was cold and from a can. Very unappetizing. My husband got 1 pancake and an egg. The egg was good and the pancake was massive. Eggs were ok, asked for the bacon to be crispy but when it came it was well done , almost blackened but limpy and luke warm. the menu said 2 pieces of bread so i was expecting 2 slices of bread which was not the case...it was one slice cut in two. didn't have the potatoes but no consideration off the bill for that. Also, the bacon had clearly been cooked prior and reheated. But their biggest mistake? CLEAN YOUR GRILL! Very clean was my first impression. Friendly server. We can tell this is a locals place as the waitress knows everyone by name. I have the oysters breakfast. Oysters were cooked perfectly and seasoned just right. Husband had the sausage and biscuits. He said the gravy could have been thicker. One small thing. We both had hot tea. We had a family vacation here in Long Beach. As we departed this morning we wanted a sit down breakfast. A quick yelp search gave us Bensons by the beach. I called ask asked if they could accommodate a large family of 15 and I was told yes. We waited approximately 10 min and they were able to seat us all. This place is family owned and we were treated like family. They have a sign up that says "please be patient with us as we have a small kitchen and take pride in making your meal". Even with 15 of us, they promptly brought out our drinks and took our food order. Food arrived about 15 minutes later. There was nothing disappointing about the food and serving portions were perfect. If your looking for a 5 star Ritz Carlton keep moving on! But if your looking for 5 star delicious home cooking, this is the place for you. I will be returning and enjoying another breakfast here. read more

I ate here twice on our trip as the omelets are that good. I had the seafood and crab omelet and it was worth the high price. Packed with more ingredients than you need. Everything in Long Beach is expensive as this is a tourist economy. If you want a good non-fast food meal, paying the price is very much worth it. It is a small family place, and they tell you it's a small kitchen, so sit and relax, your on vacation, remember? Having said that there is no relaxing by the staff as everyone hustles and is as pleasant as the weather here. The pancakes and French toast is large and tasty. There are very few places for breakfast in town, so they could have skimped, but no: You get a large breakfast that will fill you for a while. They are only open for breakfast and lunch so don't miss this gem. On one day we had a huge party of 11, and they couldn't have been more accommodating and friendly. I came here twice this week with my two kids, ages 2 and 6. They had games, puzzles, and books to keep the kids entertained while waiting at the table. Not just cheap paper things, we're talking Melissa and Doug puzzles that my kids were actually engaged with for a long time. The staff was super friendly, helpful and accommodating. Stopped in to this restaurant in the early morning on a Monday with the family. We were the only ones in the place so far and were seated promptly by our server who let our young girls pick their table choice much to their delight. Service was friendly and quick- I went with an omelette, my husband chose bacon and eggs, both our kids went with the egg hash browns & toast option (bacon or sausage is just over a dollar more which they both did want). Food came quickly and all was really tasty! Hashbrowns were especially so- not greasy and just the right ratio of crispy to soft . We were camping so our friends saved us a table. By the time we arrived our friends had already had their breakfast but recommended the eggs and bacon. Said the bacon was the thick kind and the hash browns were crispy. Our breakfast came out in lightening speed but when our waitress put the plate in front of me I noticed the hash browns not only weren't crispy but they were barely brown. I asked that they bring them to me the way our friends had them. Then she reached down to take my plate away. I said just bring me new ones I want to start eating my breakfast since my boyfriend had his and our friends were done. She snarled at me and I said just bring me new ones. I will pay. Not thinking they would actually charge me. Then they moved us to a smaller table so they could seat a larger party. We were happy to comply. After about 15 minutes and my breakfast was eaten. I inquired as to where my hash browns were. I got a snippy answer from the waitress who said its busy back there and they will come out on the order received. I said this should have been put in front of all the existing orders as it was a correction order. She informed me that she was just a waitress. So I asked for the manager. The hash browns arrived and crispy they were. There was no sign of white. Then the owner arrived too and I explained what happened. She said because I was late our friends hash browns were cooked longer. And that's why they were crispy. I said I didn't care why but you should never try to remove a plate to fix one item. Just bring out the new item so the person can continue eating with their party. She then said "that's just how we do it here". To add insult to injury. They charged me for the hash browns.
