I don't know if it's a race issue or just poor customer service, but in my experience Bering's fails to provide customer service to blacks. My friend, a black professional who lives in West U told me what she had been experiencing at Bering's, failure to get help from white salesmen. So we did our own test. My black friend walked into Bering's and a group of 3 white salesmen standing around talking looked at her and turned away as she walked by. I walked in after watching what happened from outside, and one of the white salesmen walked up to me and asked if I needed help. I looked at him, grabbed my friend and walked out. My black friend ended up going to Westheimer Plumbing and Hardware, and she told me they were very pleasant and helpful. I won't be shopping at Bering's again. read more

If you're planning to give a wedding gift card, look elsewhere. There are no "wedding" or special event gift cards--just one design that makes a $200 gift look like a $20 gift. Not attractive. read more

Wide variety of home items. It's like a mixture of Ace Hardware and Bed, Bath, and Beyond. The items are mostly mid-range as far as quality and a little on the pricey side. If you need a one-stop shop for home furnishings and hardware this place is very accommodating and the staff are very affable. I was a loyal shopper at the Westheimer store for many years. I worked for a law firm nearby, and I would shop there on my lunch hour. Everyone was always polite and helpful and treated me with respect. After I retired, I started shopping at the Bissonnet store because it was closer to my home, but the staff there was entirely different. They were haughty and snobbish, and there were times when I felt I was being watched as if I were going to steal something. At first I thought it was just because of the different location, but then it occurred to me that it might be because of the way I was dressed. When I was working and shopping on my lunch hour, I was always wearing a dress or a suit along with high heels, and I suppose I looked like a working person. After I retired, I didn't feel the need to dress up to go shopping, so I sometimes went in jeans and t-shirts. Maybe that made the difference. In any event, I went there for the last time today. I was looking for an item that I had bought there before and couldn't find anywhere else. After looking for it myself without success, I finally spotted someone to ask. She grudgingly answered me by simply shaking her head negatively, didn't say a word to me, and didn't look pleased at all at my approaching her. I am finished with Bering's. read more

This is a nice little hardware store. It appears clean each time I go in there. It is a little pricey, but it is a smaller chain so that is to be expected. Most of the time they do try to greet the customer as they walk in, but not always. As opposed to the big stores, there is usually someone e to talk to within minutes if you need some help finding items or just a little advise. On top of being a hardware store, they also sell coffee and snacks. They even have tamales that are pretty good from time to time. There is a giftstore there as well. The store is a little on the small side, so they don't carry everything under the sun, but they have a good selection of most things. They do not sell lumber though. So go elsewhere if that is what you need. Overall, its a good place to go if you need to get in and get out instead of walking all over for just a few items. I know I will continue to go there unless the girlfriend is with me. She likes to stop and look at EVERYTHING! Great place to shop. read more

I had my wedding invitations made in the Berings stationary department and it was a great/ affordable experience. I do a lot of graphic design work of my own and wanted to help design my invitations- not a problem for Berings! Also, if you register at there, you receive an additional 30% off stationary...also super helpful for wedding invites. We got some of our most favorite wedding gifts from Berings- a grill, outdoor cooler, popcorn maker, etc.- we love this store! read more

I've shopped at Bering's for many years, in spite of the markup, because the customer service has always been on point...until yesterday. After having an incredibly pleasant interaction with a gentleman that cut a key for me, I moved along to checkout and was extremely underwhelmed by the cashier. She was rude and argumentative. She snatched the credit card machine after I mistakenly chose VISA debit (which apparently means credit but still says debit...another conversation for another day) and continued on about how I should've known that VISA debit meant credit. I'll admit that I entertained the conversation at first until I relented due to her aggressiveness. I'll also add that her voice was hoarse which may have signaled an illness to which I'll share my disappointment with management for allowing a sick employee to work in a customer facing position. With the outbreak of flu and meningitis, I'd expect more from all employers but certainly ones that welcome hundreds of daily visitors. I recently visited my sister in Houston and mentioned that I needed new knobs/pulls for my kitchen cabinets. Having grown up in Houston, I knew Bering's was a top quality store, so when my sister mentioned going to Bering's to look for the knobs I was all for it. We quickly found what we liked and I placed a special order. We worked out shipping to Memphis (where I live), and they shipped them to me. When they arrived, they looked great, but were the wrong finish. I checked my order and indeed the wrong color was on the receipt. I called Bering's and a very helpful gentleman told me not to worry and they were going to reorder the knobs and would re-ship once I sent back the original knobs. Today my new knobs arrived and they look fantastic! I've already changed out my 42 knobs on my cabinets, and my husband came home and saw them and was pleasantly surprised to see the new look! I would highly recommend Bering's based upon a great product selection and superb customer service! read more

Great selections. This place has the hard to find hardware & great kitchen gadets. They even had the Vera Bradley items my wife requested for her birthday (the clerks were very helpful.) Now only if I could keep my wife away from the children department....she buys lots of clothing for our children. read more
