I usually only go to the barber's if I have no time to cut my own hair but sometimes it's nice to get a proper cut from a professional. BB was within walking distance of my house so I decided to give it a shot. The inside feels a lot bigger than it looks like from Santa Monica Blvd and there is a waiting area in the back, past the barber chairs. It was a Saturday and I actually got a seat faster than others who did have appointments (I guess since most of the guys there have a single barber they prefer). I had a great experience working with Tracy B!. It sounded like she was a newcomer to the shop but I really liked what she did for me (I brought in my tablet to show her a couple of sample pictures of what I wanted)! The pricing was fair at $21 for a haircut without tip so I walked out happy and looking better than I did walking in =). read more

So I came in for a haircut and I specifically asked for 2 on the top and zero on the sides. I didn't get what I told the barber to do. He didn't clean up the back of my hair. I understand that someone else had an appointment but if you're going to take me on at least do a good job. I am never coming back to this place again and they did a terrible job. Stay away! Also. They charged me 35 dollars for a haircut and a rinse they didn't give me a rinse either and basically stole money from me. If you can't do the job right don't do it at all. Not worth the money, especially after they have raised the price. They totally messed up my boyfriend's hair. It's choppy and uneven in the front, and in the back, they can't even do the basic tapered cut. This was his second time there, the first time a different barber cut his hair and it was ok. Yep. This is my barber. I had been looking around for one in the area. I tried the Floyd's, I tried the Tel's, I tried just about every shop with a generic barber-sounding guy's name attached to it and finally I was like "Ugh...Berkeley." But I've had two great cuts here and I keep coming back. I tried Leslie, like a lot of people suggested, then accidentally tried Mike. Honestly, Mike was much better for my hair (I'm a dude, short inconceivably straight hair) and gave me a cut that looked good even 2 months down the road. I recommend him, but you have to get his number specifically because he's too cool for the rest of the shop. The place itself is nice, low-key, nothing fancy. Stumbled upon this place after all the reviews I read about BRENDA. I've had long hair below my shoulders for the past 5-10 years cutting it ever couple of years or so. I came in with heavy, flat hair looking for a trim/cut. I've always been nervous about haircuts because most barbers/stylists end up cutting my hair too short. I showed Brenda a few reference photos of how I wanted my hair to look. She shampooed and cut my hair within 45 minutes with good conversation. I walked out feeling good and my hair feeling lighter and styled. She added that if I wanted it cut any shorter I could come back at anytime within the next seven days. She also accepts Venmo! Anyways, the shop itself has the old barber shop vibe to it, which is always cool (for me at least). 5 stars for Brenda! Brenda is the way to go! I was a bit nervous going to a barber shop to get a haircut, but my Yelp buddies said Leslie was a-ok. I had to make a drastic change and cut off my long locks for a new look. 11 inches and $35 later, I donated my hair and feel great. Thank you, I shall return. And ladies, fear not! You will be treated well and not ripped off like sooo many other places I've been to in the past. Found this place on Yelp and took my bf here due to the amazing reviews. Called on the day of to make an appointment, and was in and out within 20 minutes for the cut. The gentleman who cut my bf's hair did an amazing job! The price is also super reasonable ($28 for his hair) and there's parking too. Only downside is cash only. read more

I usually go for a higher-end cut. I came in last minute and the result was average. My main complaint is that I didn't see the blades soaking in disinfectant before they were used, so I'm assuming they don't clean their straight blade and scissors etc between cuts. That's something I've become accustom to, but I've noticed that not every shop does it. With that said, the man who cut my hair was nice and responsive, and the cut was relatively less expensive. read more

I've been going to Berkeley Barbers for many, many years, old location, new location old owner, new owners, at least a dozen different barbers - but I think Tom was there when I first walked in years ago and he's still there now, always done the best job for me. OK I have less hair now, LOL, but even so, when I get home and look in the mirror with a new cut I do "the Fonz", and say hey, can't really improve on that! My barber left and I just wanted a decent hair cut. Unbeknownst to me, I would walk into the best hair cut I've ever had. NICK is an older gentleman that knows how to do a comb over and blended fade. I always get compliments after getting a hair cut from him. The price is moderate. $25 for a cut and shampoo. Nick is worth more. He also does a straight razor to clean up your edges. This review is strictly for Valerie as I have not tried the other barbers there , but I probably wont try after my experience with valerie. I went in with no appointment and valerie was the only one available. So I read a few reviews on here about how good she was and was sort of excited. So let me to you about my experience. The haircut lasted 5 mins. I always ask for a faux hawk with a one on the side. So valerie gave me a one on the side super fast. Then she use scissors to cut the top. The top was so choppy it was horrible. I mean if you are going be fast on a haircut I have no problem with, but at least look at the hair after you cut it. read more

my husband likes this place, so we go there every month or 2. Valerie is the one that my husband relies on. She is really nice and does the work quickly. I am a woman with very short hair and I've had my hair cut here five or six times. To date I have never had less than a stellar experience! The barbers are all very professional and the price can't be beat ($21 for a cut and shampoo). I was surprised to see someone's less-than-polite review of Valerie. I always have a great time when she does my hair - she is so sweet and she does a great job, and she's tons of fun to chat with! If you ask for her you won't be disappointed. As with all the other barbers she's professional and has years of experience. Free parking is available behind the building (turn on Harvard). I followed Leslie here from Don's, just FYI that I have a more detailed review on their page. Leslie is a great stylist and she knows what kind of cut I like. Been her customer for over a year and have been to numerous different stylists. I admit it, I've even cheated on her when I wasn't in the area and needed a cut. MY BAD! The other cuts were not as good and the cutting process was horrible (think hair pulling and a girl that put too much pressure on scalp while combing). I will be loyal to good ole' Leslie as long as I have hair... which might have an end date that's near (thanks to my genes!). Berkeley overall has an old school feel to it, but plenty of entertainment around. TV's, magazine, heck even toys for the kids to pass the time. I dig the decor and reminds me of being in an mix between an old mechanic's shop and a diner. They have a shoe shiner and a lady who does nails, if you need some extra pampering. They also have FREE PARKING in the back. Key aspect in this part of LA. Overall just a good ole' fashioned 1950's feel where customer service is king. As others have pointed out, this barber shop has a very nostalgic feel with the decor. While the outside is modern, the inside takes you back to a time... Well... Before I was a gleam in my pappy's eye. ;) So what about the hair cut? I've been getting my hair cut by Leslie for a couple years now, and she is great! She is very personable and does a great job cutting my hair each time I go in to see her. Her hair cuts are very consistent, so I'm never worried about having it come out differently each time (my gripe about Supercuts, Fantastic Sams, etc.). Highly recommended! read more

Judging by all the other reviews it seems that my experience was not typical, but I am definitely not coming back here for a while. The barber who cut my hair was pretty rude, and seemed pretty unwilling to cut my hair. He kept on talking about a bunch of money he lost gambling. That's still fine, what you do with your money is fine, everyone can't be cheery all the time. What's not so fine, however, is when I asked to have my hair cut a little shorter since he had left it too long after he hurried through it, he made a big fuss and made it seem like it was all my fault. "Boy, you're really making me work today!" Work?! Of course I am! This is your job! Cut my hair! Also, I'm pretty sure I got charged $24, and I did not get any fancy neck massage like everyone else seems to have gotten. Other than that, the decor did seem kind of cool, and I think I'd give this another go if I can avoid that one guy who cut my hair last time. read more

I like Berkeley Barbers. All of the barbers are friendly, but once we get the initial chit-chat out of the way, they don't talk too much... I have a strange thing about that; I get entirely too anxious during a haircut to be talking to people. One time Bill said, "Hey, are you looking at my girlfriend!?" when I was eyeing his pasted-up pictures of Halle Berry, but that was cool because it was funny. Anyway, they do a pretty good job of my extremely simple haircut: A 1.5 blade buzz cut, all around. Plus the neck massage at the end is pretty nice.
