This is a family owned and operated barbershop located in the Santa Monica area. And when I say family operated, I mean generational dating back to 1955. I came in for a haircut and the grandson of the original owner cut my hair. The price here is pretty reasonable considering how expensive haircuts are these days. there's an old-school vibe here because it doesn't feel like there was a lot of renovations that took place over the years - e.g. that barbershop pole out front. Jimmy, who was cutting my hair was great. He provided some suggestions based on the shape of my previous cut and my head. I really appreciate that because sometimes I'm not sure what's best for me lol. I do definitely value suggestions if it makes my hair look better. All in all, just a great place for haircuts. Definitely coming back. Also know that they're either cash only or they take Venmo and another payment option which I can't remember off the top of my head. Tel's is a fourth generation family run barber shop that I've looked at for years. It was recommended by an old friend who I am no longer in contact with. I went today and had a great experience. Both barbers are the great grandsons of the founder and extremely welcoming. The shop is clean, the men warm, skilled, and efficient. They even knew my old pal and said he was just there on Saturday. The shop has an old school vibe and the family father and son's barbers are cute. They kind of have a soprano's/jersey thing going on. I'm still sitting here trying to find the $55 "haircut" and beard trim I paid for. I asked for a low fade and I have no idea what I got! I probably didn't hear the part where I was told they don't use shavers otherwise trust me I would've walked out before getting robbed, they want to charge like if they do a full service. I've been to many shops in LA, and this is hands down the best! The most accommodating and most welcoming. There is always a standoffish vibe at most shops that you walk into as a "new comer" but never here. I see new clients come in a get welcomed as though they were veterans. It's run tightly by a solid family of father and 2 sons, they each have their own style and own character which makes it easy for people to figure what works best for them. Jimmy is my Barber and I've been coming to him for about 5 years. I have a pretty complicated hairline and many cowlicks, but he has been able to understand my hair and has never failed. They examine and understand how clients hair behaves and they all kill it!! Drew, grandson of the owner, was my barber down the street at Tel's for a couple years before the pandemic hit. While I stayed home and cut my own hair until I was vaccinated, I was very glad to return and find that, not only were they still around, but Drew was now running the place, and I've been going back to him for a touch-up every couple of weeks again ever since. Drew always thanks me for coming back, and is easy to communicate with, which I find very important in a barber; asking what I would like done, but also making recommendations, to always walk away "looking fresh". The other guys who cut there have always been friendly as well. Since coming back, they now accept Venmo as well as cash, which is a welcome change, and have simplified the pricing structure to a flat $30 per cut. Between the hand-off in ownership and dealing with COVID protocols, the shop itself feels like it's in a bit of a transitory place, but Drew has talked about making updates, so I look forward to seeing what improvements come as things return to a new normal. They are walk-in only, and I would love for them to implement a system which allows regulars to set appointments rather than having to wait to be seen.
