The Berkeley Eye Center in The Shops Downtown has been truly a wonderful find! It all starts with the front office staff - Karen, Victoria, Jada & Sabrina. Their professionalism, kindness, & efficiency is wonderful. You can tell that these ladies each love what they do and are good at it! From setting your appointment, fitting your glasses, helping with insurance, getting you checked out so you can head home--each one of them does their job with care! Dr. Hallas is such a great doctor. On my last visit, I was having a rather scary (to me) medical issue with my eye. He answered all of my questions thoroughly & patiently. His assistant, Christina was great with my initial questions as well. I learned a lot from both of them. It is a bit of a drive for me but worth it. This is a great place and they know their stuff. Customer service is my thing and they get an A+! Dr. Hollas is the bees knees!! He's so funny and nice. However, I am little disappointed, because I thought I needed glasses. I had the frames already picked out and everything. I was wrong...no glasses needed. I moved to Houston a little over one year ago. New to the city, I do not have a network of people who can direct me to the best medical providers. Therefore, I read online reviews to decide where to go for my yearly eye exam. Based on the stellar reviews, I chose Berkeley Eye Center (Downtown) and Dr Hollas. The 5Star reviews were accurate. From making the appointment to checking in on day of appointment, to the exam, and checkout. ALL aspects of my visit were 5 Star. I have worn contact lens for nearsightedness for over 3 decades. I see great with my contacts at distance. Unfortunately, age has now distorted my near field vision and I am a prisoner to reading glasses. I hate them. It had been suggested a few years ago that I only wear one contact so I could see both near and far. I hated it. Made me feel off balance and very uncomfortable. Dr Hollas explained a better way which involved wearing contacts in both eyes but wearing a lower power in the less dominant eye (he can show you how to determine which eye is dominant). So I tried it. This is not an exaggeration - it has changed my life. Since trying it 4 days ago - I have not worn reading glasses. I can work at my computer, read a book, use my phone, and see my dashboard while driving - without glasses. I am so happy to have shed the need to "find my glasses" every time I need to do anything up close to mid distance. Everyone at their office was so friendly and helpful. Ciara was a life saver! I went in to get readers because one of my contacts had come out. Ciara showed me the readers but then suggested that if I could get my prescription from my doctor's office that maybe they could give me a contact. After receiving the prescription Ciara checked with the doctor and was able to give me a couple of contacts that matched my prescription! I could see again! The doctor is great but they dropped the ball from day one.The order for my glasses was never placed. When I called for an update, no one returned my call. I had to actually go there to get someone to look into it. It was very frustrating having to deal with the office manager. Will not be returning. read more

This is my go to spot for eye exams and glasses. I went in after recently losing my glasses. The front desk staff is always very nice and efficient. The lady who took me back and ran me through some tests was very kind and efficient as well. Dr. Hollas was out (I usually see him) and so I saw a visiting doctor. She was super nice, knew her stuff and talked to me about all of my options. I then moved on to Kim, the eyeglass tech. She was very helpful for picking out my new glasses and some sunglasses. I have been a Berkeley patient for over 25 years, I have been seeing Dr Hollas at least 10 years, not really sure. I work downtown, so the convenience is why I started seeing him. The front office team is professional, efficient, and helpful. They'll work with your schedule and help with your vision insurance questions and have never steered me wrong. The back office medical team are incredibly proficient; even with difficult prescriptions and wish lists. After first crafting a contacts system for near and far and astigmatism issues that worked great, I tried some place more 'convenient' the next year/scrip. Wrong move. I visited last week as a new patient and could not have been happier with the whole experience. The appointment setting was easy and the ordering of the contacts was especially easy. The biggest difference was Dr. Palumbo changing the eye that I put my ONE contact in for my near vision. Was having some trouble with my right eye while I was out of town on business. Having recently moved I didn't have a Dr. Googled and found Berkeley Eye Center. They have many convenient locations, one of which was close to me, so I called to get an appointment for when I got back to town. They were able to fit me in that Monday! The entire office staff is amazing.. very helpful, and very caring from Victoria and Samantha to Monique and Dr. Hollas. I felt like everyone wanted to make sure I was getting the best care possible. Stopped in earlier this week for help determining if my new prescription glasses (bought elsewhere) were as off-balance as I thought they were. Not only did the Optician gentleman spend the time with me to review my records and the glasses, he helped me understand there were other items that were not quite right with the lenses that I would never have been able to determine on my own. In the process, he reviewed an optical promotion with me that I could benefit from with my remaining insurance coverage. The offer was exceptional and now I will have top of the line glasses and backup glasses through Berkeley. I would have wasted the benefits had he not taken the time to review my benefits. Many times people will answer your questions but not go beyond what you ask. I'm so glad he was proactive and willing to take the time not only to address my concerns with existing glasses I bought elsewhere, but put me into two new frames with all the extras! read more

I'm pretty disappointed with Berkeley. I think the doctors are top-notch but the front office staff needs a bit of work. I went there twice for a standard eye exam and contact fitting and both times they failed to code the procedure correctly to the insurance company. I ended up having to call BCBS and go through that awful process each time to clear it up. You can call it bad luck if you will, but I have talked to other people in my office who experienced the same inconvenience. I changed eye doctors and have not had the same problem. It might be better now, but I do not want to try again. read more

Absolutely terrible. I cannot see out of one of the contacts when I'm working on my computer. I apparently angered the blonde woman who works at the front desk because now the doctor will not even call me back to see about changing the prescription in my left contact. We never got past the fitting stage. read more

This us the best place to go in Downtown Houston for an amazing eye care experience. I work downtown and Berkeley Eye Center is so convenient. Located in The Shops, it is easily accessible from the Tunnel System or ground level. The staff is very caring & knowledgeable and I got appointments the same day if needed. If you wear glasses, you know how important that is. I bought a pair of glasses from another distributor and was getting headaches daily. They were too far to go back to during the week so I searched for an eye doctor and found this Berkeley close by. I will never go anywhere else. Dr Kokel diagnosed that my glasses needed remade and I'm free of headaches. Elia the Optician took the time to explain about the special polorized magnetic clip I could have made when I order my lenses for instant sunglasses! She also provided me wih nose pads to keep my plastic frames from slipping. Truly exceptional customer service here and I'm a satisfied customer :) read more

The Berkeley Eye Center at the Shops has a very warming atmosphere. The ladies at the reception are very attentive and friendly; they greeted me as if I were an old friend. The doctor's assistant who checked my eyes was very nice and ensured the equipment was sanitized before and after my face touch anything. Awesome since the crud is going around.
