My autistic daughter is a longtime customer of Berkshire, with an expensive plan. Her Lennox gas furnace needed a new fan motor at a Berkshire quote of $2400. There was no negotiating on that price, even mentioning the price of gas to travel to Springfield,MA from West Springfield! Seriously! We sought out a separate quote with a local company, and the job was done quickly for $1600 including the new fan ordered from Lennox. I see a big problem with Berkshire 'abusing' the trust of longtime customers who expect they are in good hands. We paid extra to be a "Premier Customer" which supposedly would put us ahead of regular customers. A Tech (Jose) was here yesterday for a seasonal checkup. We had had no problems with the heat. He said we needed a capacitor so we paid an extra $110. He left and didn't flip the switch to turn the furnace back on. We didn't realize it until the heat didn't come on this morning. I called at 6:30 AM and got a call back at 7:45 AM. The heat didn't come on after flipping the switch. The best they could do was to send the same guy out between 2:00 - 3:00. I heard nothing by 3:30 so I called the office. I was told a different Tech would be out, who had two customers IN FRONT OF US! I called back at 4:00 because I hadn't heard anything. I was told he should be here by 4:30. We then called at 5:00 and was told he was on his next to last call and he would be here when that was finished. Jimmy came and took care of the problem. Jose had not only left the switch off, but he didn't turn the gas back on. Overall, except for Jimmy, it was less than a great experience the last 30 hours. All of the technicians that come out to tune up my furnace and air conditioner are reliable, efficient, knowledgeable experts that keep my system running up to par...but Jason is very special to me because I remember when he first came out almost 20 years ago. I think I was one of his first service calls. He was conscientious and thorough. I remember how he flushed out my air conditioning unit and made sure to keep the runoff from going into my pool by surrounding it with old towels. I trust Berkshire Air. When it was time to replace my system after 20 years I went with them and it has run well since it was replaced in 2013. STAY AWAY!!! We paid them to diagnose the heating issue in a home we just finished remodeling because the heat was not working. They did a diagnosis of the system, gave a quote to repair and upon completion said there was a small leak in the basement that they would quote and need to come back and fix in two days. Well despite paying them to diagnose the system they missed the leak in the upstairs of the home, set the thermostat to 85 and left. Our real estate agent found our home flooded a few days later. They will not work with us to help fix the issue they misdiagnosed and aren't taking our phone calls. We have had to pull the house off of the market while we remediate the water and repair the extensive damage they caused. read more

The night of heavy winds--I heard a pop, went downstairs, and found the service door open. I left a call. I had concerns and talked to their on call technician who reassured me. They called me on Monday and a set a time for the visit. Called me the day before as well as emailed me. The day of the service they sent an email with the picture of the tech. He was personable and stated all I needed for the damper was screws and the bolt needed to be tightened on door. My furnace is old, and I asked him about the condition of it. He was honest said it was cracked and when it does go not to waste money on a major repair. He explained the process and gave me an idea of what it could cost. When I hire a company, I expect them to be on time, honest, and to be highly qualified. This is what I received. They have a client for life. read more

We had a terrible experience with Berkshire Heating. We were without heat for the coldest week of the winter. They were late to order a part - a part that we later discovered was quite common and they should have had available. One worker took his mask off while talking with me and another wore his improperly (under the nose). Technician came on time and was very nice. I was very disappointed that after tech cleaned furnace and left, the same dirty filter was left in furnace. No new air filter replacement was put in. I had this new furnace installed 1 year ago by Berkshire Heating. I also had a them Install new central air conditioner as well this summer. Berkshire knew what size furnace filter I would need. I had an issue with my heat at the start of the season. I called Berkshire in need of a service call. The service tech showed up 3 hours late. He did not disassemble any part of the furnace to diagnose the issue. He told us that it was a sensor and would be $660 just for the part, no installation. We discussed this quote with another HVAC person and found that the part actually cost $170. We changed the part out but the furnace still did not work. The actual issue was a clogged gas line.......NO $$$. I suggest staying away!! read more

Our good choice was confirmed today with our semi-annual system tuneup by technician Tony Hall. His checkup was thorough and complete. He walked us through the entire process with courtesy, professionalism, and good humor. And he completely followed Covid protocol with a mask and social distancing. I am so torn on these guys. The first time I called I received reasonably timely and reasonably accurate service for my oil furnace. That would probably get them a solid 3 stars. Then, more recently, I called and explained that I wished to receive an estimate on installing zone valves to change our single zone system to a two zone system. They sent a "comfort advisor" out that immediately told me that he couldn't help me because he was told by the office that he would be providing an estimate on an oil to gas conversion and he would have no idea on plumbing costs. Thus, this first miscommunication was both a waste of my time and theirs. Soon thereafter, I received a call from the office to schedule a plumber to provide a plumbing estimate. Importantly, at no time was I advised that there would be a charge for this visit. The plumber came out and, after a short visit, expressed to me that there would be a charge of $69. I called the office to object. The manager immediately got very defensive and abrasive. Despite the fact that their office staff had now made two errors in communication, the manager insisted that the staff had told me of the charge and that the charge should stand. In the end, she told me that I was to be put on a "Do Not Service" list. That makes my decision not to do business with them again pretty easy. I can only hope that people read this review and opt to go with a different company for their heating needs. read more

My father owns the multi family that I live in. Called Berkshire to come out because my heat wasn't turning on automatically, he kept having to go down there and light the pilot. They sent a kid about a year out of school. after half an hour down there he came upstairs and told my dad that the boiler was cracked and the water was leaking all over my basement floor. Told me it was one thing, which it wasn't and weren't willing to come back out for a second opinion without another $125 fee. Of course, I would have gladly paid the repair when the correct issue was diagnosed but they couldn't get past the $125. I call that penny wise and pound foolish. Chris from Berkshire just left my house and everything was great. He came on time as scheduled, introduced himself, and was very friendly. My furnace is practically brand new but seemed to be running a bit loud for the past few days. I was hoping it wasn't anything major, and fortunately it was a quick fix. Chris explained the issue and was able to resolve the problem within a matter of minutes. I've seen previous reviews, and I myself wasn't very happy when I was told by another company back in the summer of 2014 that I needed a new furnace either, so that may have played a part in their negative reviews; no one wants to hear that kind of news. However, I have no complaints with the service I received. The rep who answered the phone was polite, the appointment that they set up was convenient for me, and the tech that came was great. We scheduled a repair of our furnace this Monday and had a technician stop by from Berkshire Heating and Cooling to perform the repair based on their good reviews. Tim who assisted us was polite, courteous, knowledgeable and took measures against Covid-19. However the deceptive business practices we experienced has made us completely regret using them, we should have shopped around more. After our technician diagnosed that our furnace igniter wasn't working which is what we suspected when we called, we were quoted a price of $350 plus the $99 diagnostic fee which was a bit over the higher end but what came afterwards was way worse. After we agreed to this repair (had to sign an invoice digitally before each repair) he followed up with more necessary repairs which was the control board (replacement) and quoted us a price of $850 for our 27 year old Goodman furnace which was ridiculous after comparing prices online for OEM parts and average repair costs. The parts are pretty common and easily obtainable, we understand the overhead and labor costs but it shouldn't be $1300 to repair an Igniter and control board for this brand of furnace. After he performed the first repair and recommended the second repair he demanded payment immediately through check/credit/cash for the first repair even before the furnace was fully functional (stated the igniter would burn out possibly in a day without the control board). He did not accept any discussion regarding price as the company has set prices. The invoices also don't have labor costs or original part price (or their set part price) just the total cost of each part repair which I feel is deceptive. The replacement of both parts were completed in less than 35 minutes give or take. I wouldn't consider Berkshire H&C full service as no one should use them for repairs, installations of new furnaces they're intent on selling you on, maybe but I'm not hopeful on that either. read more

Terrible Terrible company. A tech came out for a furnace cleaning, said he couldn't do the job because the system was old. (Which I was fine with.) He made a verbal note in his iPad and called the main office. He filled up the water in the slight glass because it was low before he left. A few days later the furnace had way too much water in it and I woke up to a freezing house. When I called for help, they said he never touched anything and refused to help like I would call and make this up. The least they could of done was offer for someone to take a look at it. He was not aware the debris was a nest of white eggs of Clover mites. Our expense for pest control for infestation exterior-interior windows and sidings. I've had 3 experiences with Berkshire Heating. One was horrible. One was perfectly fine. One was superb. First, the horrible. It was a couple of years ago. Heat went out late at night on a very cold weekend. I have a Guardian Care contract with Columbia Home Services and I called them. Turns out their computer was down; it was the weekend crew and they couldn't give me an authorization number to call Berkshire Heating, with whom they contract. My wife has serious medical problems and I called Berkshire directly. They were totally unresponsive. They wouldn't come without an authorization ('company policy") and would not connect me with someone with more authority - even after I explained the medical situation. It was a long scary cold night and I cursed them the whole night. In the morning, the regular crew at Guardian Care got in, the computer problem got fixed, and we found another contractor who fixed the problem. Last Summer I called them to clean and tune my gas furnace. Routine work, not covered by Guardian Care, and my regular guy doesn't do cleaning. Guy from Berkshire came out, did some testing and pronounced it ok. That's all I needed. I think they charged me around $65 or so and it was fine. Recently, we had a problem with accumulated air in the heating lines. I know the system hadn't been purged in a long time and the noisy baseboard radiators were starting to be a problem. I called Berkshire again. They sent out Chris the same day. All I can say to anyone reading this, is that you should ask for him if you call this company. Nice guy. Young guy, but with an old school commitment to doing it right. He quoted me $213 to purge the air. I wondered where they got that odd number and thought it was pretty high, but decided to go for it. Once I saw what he did, I was convinced that it was a good value. He literally spent hours working on the system. Apparently purging air in heating lines is not a trivial matter. Our furnace stopped working and I called Berkshire HVAC. Benny worked for a long time and finally got it working but while he was still there it stopped again.This happened several times and each time he was able to get it running again. Before he left we realized that our thermostat was also not working. When he left the heat was on and he recommended we get a new thermostat because ours wasn't making the connection to turn on the furnace. He wasn't gone very long before it stopped again and we had no way of turning it on. I called the office and scheduled a service call. Brandon arrived in the pouring rain and I don't think he was very happy to be here (and I wish he had put on booties over his shoes) . He installed a new thermostat and worked on the furnace some more. When he left everything was working. The next day (Sunday) it wasn't working again so I called once more. I hated to ruin a tech's Sunday but it was cold in the house. Brandon came back and this time he definitely wasn't happy to be here. (I guess he had several service calls that day) After he got it working he decided to get into it deeper to see if he could find the solution to our problem. When he came back upstairs he showed us pictures of the working parts of the furnace and he said who ever serviced our furnace in the past neglected to do proper maintenance and replacement of certain parts. If I could leave negative stars, I would. Stay as far away from Berkshire as you can, unless you love getting crap equipment and even worse service for your hard earned dollars. We mistakenly had them replace both our heat & cooling systems- worst mistake I've made as a homeowner!!! No way either of these systems should need to be replaced within 7 years of installation. The "method" they used to check the refrigerant levels in our brand new unit depleted the refrigerant levels every time they did it. Result was them telling us we had to pay them to throw parts at it which may or may not fix the issue. Had another company come in and tell us the damage Berkshire did and we had to recharge the coolant- 2 years later we're being told to replace the entire AC because of the damage Berkshire did. The heating unit is rusting in the heat exchanger (old unit was in place over 30 years with no rust so this isn't environmentally caused by conditions inside our house) and now we need to spend about $2k to replace the heat exchanger or spend more to get this piece of crap out of our house completely. Nine years ago our nightmare began when Berkshire installed a Buderus Logamax Plus GB 142 boiler. They couldn't get it to work properly and had no technician knowledgeable about the product. In the first month of installation, Berkshire was here 4 times. The following month, we lost our heat at 6 different times. Over the years, we have had numerous problems costing us various repair fees. Berkshire sold us the most expensive product on the market (over $11,000) when our former boiler had a meltdown and we were without heat during the late fall and early winter. I did not do my due diligence to research this product and relied on Berkshire to advise me. In the beginning, we relied on Berkshire to service the boiler but had no confidence in their skill although all their technicians were very polite. We did find an independent company who successfully serviced the boiler when it broke down. Again, we lost heat this past week. The technician we now have, pointed out all the areas that are in obvious failure and need to be replaced. He also pointed out problems that were due to poor installation. The cost: over $2000 with no guarantee that the unit will not fail in the future. (Check the reviews on this product. It is a known lemon. I tried to contact Buderus to no avail.) Berkshire should have known about the problems with this unit: it came out in 2008 and we bought it at the end of 2010. Let the buyer beware. read more

Prior to purchasing our home, the owners used Berkshire for servicing and annual tune ups of their AC unit for several year - so we continued when we purchased. We've had no issues (knock on wood) with our AC unit since moving in and with keeping up on the annual tune ups. In fact, the techs are always impressed with how awesome it still runs and cools being an older unit. We are well aware we will need a new unit in the future but the techs always suggest to just keep trucking until we need to since it operates so well. We've always been satisfied with this. "If it's not broke, don't fix it" Today they came out for our annual tune up. All the same info. "Wow! This cools amazing for an older unit however in the future you may have to replace a part xyz xyz " we had the same conversation and decided that we wouldn't mess with it as the part that may need to be replaced he said was bigger than what was in there and he didn't know if it could fit. So same story as every year. It works well, so let's ride it out. The tech was super! Super kind. Efficient and polite. He took his time and seemed thorough which we appreciate. He leaves and we notice within the next half hour that the air blowing was warm and the temperature was rising fairly quickly. We wait it out thinking maybe it will take a minute to cool down and the house is already reaching 80 degrees. We call about an hour later and say that the AC suddenly doesn't work. To which the woman kerri on the phone immediately says that there would be a $99 diagnostic fee. I obviously got upset! We have had no issues whatsoever with our unit and immediately after your tech leaves our AC doesn't work and you're telling me now I have to pay $99? I told her I absolutely will not pay a fee. She says it's "only if" it's nothing the tech did. Wait a minute! The AC WORKED FINE BEFORE HE ARRIVED AND FOR THE PAST 4 YEARS!!! She says they will be out after 2pm. She calls me back and says she spoke to the tech and he explained to me that we may eventually need to change a part. YES!! He did!! But she said it could "go at any minute!" How ironic that it would go right after our tune up?! Come on now! She said we wouldn't pay diagnostic fee but WOULD have to pay for the part. I reluctantly agree. Whatever. We would've had to replace in the future regardless of whether the tech broke it or not. The second tech comes out and finds that the first tech didn't turn the switch on the AC unit back on. Easy as that ... TECH ERROR. my 3 stars is because of the immediate assumption that our AC shit the bed 30 seconds after the tech left our house!! They couldn't fathom that it was human error and were only concerned with getting us to pay more fees to have someone come out to fix our working-forever AC unit. It was so infuriating! We're pretty reasonable people and we will pay for good service but it felt super money hungry given the circumstances. We will eventually need a new unit and we're going to absolutely use berkshire however this has us second guessing using them in the future. The techs are wonderful and I love the confirmation of appts and the emails declaring their arrival since we have crazy dogs but this situation has left a really bad taste in our mouthes. These people are awful. They offer a furnace inspection, which seemed really cheap. I now know the reason they offer it so cheap. The guy came and start inspecting my furnace. After awhile he went into his prepared speech. He recited how he "visually" found some problems with the heat exchanger and by law he immediately would have to shut my furnace down and before I could even comment he started trying to setup an appointment with " a comfort specialist" i.e. the technician from his company who would sell me a brand new furnace. He starts telling me how the carbon monoxide can kill my whole family. I felt like the whole thing was a con. In my opinion that is why there price is so low. They make their money out of promoting fear and telling people that they are endangering their family unless they get their technician to put something new in. I called another technician from a differnet company. My technician said that it is impossible to tell there is a crack unless they take off the heat exchanger which it was clear he didn't do. He said there is no way you can do that by eye and that he has seen that going around. So if you call them I predict they will just look at how old your furnace is and if they think they can get away with it they will tell you by law they have to shut you down and start trying to sell you the replacement read more

The company installed a new Central A/C and home humidifier unit for my home. After installing the compressor a/c unit, they left my lawn littered with discarded debris and chemicals (freon?). The furnace humidifier didn't work very well and in just two short years, stopped working at all and the company refused my requests to replace or repair it. I had a service contract with this company to regularly service my heating and AC system. After my second service appointment I was told by the service tech that I had a Freon leak and would have to replace the entire system for $7400.00. Now I knew this price was ridiculous so I had a service tech from the commercial HVAC company that I work for come out and check the system and there is no Freon leak at all. the system was full on pressure and there was a 20 degree temp swing from inside air to air out of the duct. I have never received worse customer service from a company. I woke up to no heat in my house because of a busted circulating pump. It was on a Sunday and I knew I would have a difficult time finding the part and likely would have to pay a higher fee to have someone come out and help me. Christina answered the phone and I am not positive they could have had a worse person answering the phone. She immediately started fighting with me when I inquired whether or not the service man would have a pump that would work. With it being January, if someone was going to come out, I wanted to ensure it was going to get fixed, otherwise, I would use someone else. I had spent my day volunteering with kids and all I wanted was to work with a company that was willing to help me and be able to get a solution in place for the night. I can't even begin to explain how nasty of an individual Christina was to me. The attitude was worse than the attitude of a rebellious teenager. I am embarrassed for this company to have an individual like that representing them. All I heard was what Berkshire could not do for me and how much they were going to charge me. There was nothing about what they could do for me and what kind of solution we could come up with. I have no problem paying for service for my boiler, but I want to know there will be some sort of solution, not that I will be without heat for days on end. I wish I had thought to look here before I contacted them. Seeing the other awful reviews would have caused me to not bother with them in the first place. I contacted David and Hurley instead. They were amazing to work with and had someone out to my house within the hour. Don't waste your time with Christina and Berkshire Heating.
