One of the few restaurants of its kind in the area-- its casual, its bright and sunny, the menu has a lot of delicious options, and its all really really really good. The soups are all homemade, and change daily. Some of my favorite things to order are a very lean and delicious hot corned beef sandwhich (with macaroni salad), the chicken cheesesteak, the regular cheesesteak, the tuna melt, the salads, and if you can, stop by for breakfast and have the best french toast and sausage ever served in a restaurant. This restaurant is a staple of local eating. They have an extensive menu and I have enjoyed everything I have tried there. Personally I love their chicken pot pie and osso buco dishes. This place has a little bit of a weird vibe, thanks to the way it is set-up. There menu is also a little weird; sometimes it feels like they can't decide what the vision for the restaurant is...a diner/breakfast/lunch type place? Or a family restaurant dinner place? It may not matter in the end, because whatever you order is fantastic, which is why I am giving them 4 stars. There are old stand-bys as well as creative offerings on the menu, and they do both shockingly well. A lot of the more hoydy toydy establishments in town could learn something from these folks about consistent quality. Chicken Platter with balsamic- BEST BEST BEST BEST in the world. Okay this is basically a high protein salad, it has more meat and less salad, which is definitely my type of dish. It has lots of grilled chicken, its pretty good and still juicy. Comes with red onions, tomatos and sliced eggs. The balsamic marries everything perfectly, it is some home made sauce its thick and definitely laced with crack cause it is sooo good, I can't even describe how awesome it is. The combination of all those ingredients is outrageous, I only order this there because my mouth waters at the thought and I can't seem to order anything else when I go there cause it just gets stuck in my mind. Been twice. Both times stunk!! Omelet was not normal. Cant even explain it. The potatoes were like frozen in the bag deep fried. Nasty The corn beef and hash came with a hard over fried egg in top instead of poached. The worst was by toast came out burnt and ice cold. And not buttered. We picked up an order and oh boy was their antipasto delicious. I don't usually order salads but I had already eaten a small snack so I figured I'd give it a try. The presentation was beautiful, everything tasted very fresh, and they really packed it in there to get your money's worth. Although as usually happens with takeout salads, there was not enough dressing for even half of this salad, and I forgot to order extra. Luckily Italian dressing is easy to come by so I'll enjoy the rest of my salad tomorrow! Their menu looked so great and unique I certainly would like to try this place again. The menu here is EXTENSIVE (we're talking like.... multiple pages of food). With so many menu options, it's hard to believe that they can produce quality food, but they do! I've had everything from Burgers to omelette's to wraps and sandwiches and everything is a consistently high quality. I recommend the California BLT- typical BLT but with thick pieces of bacon on deliciously toasted bread- sliced avocado make it 'Californian'. Yum yum yum. Diner food - service leaves a lot to be desired. Seems to get pretty crowded, honestly I'm not sure why, there are better diners in the area, although this place doesn't seem to advertise itself as a diner. I had the portobello panini with roasted turkey and my friend got the prosciutto panini - both were heavy on the salt. Also, there was very little turkey on the panini I ordered, probably a slice. The waitress was trying - good at refilling our drinks, but she seemed a little frazzled and would come out often just to turn around because she forgot something.. slowed down getting stuff out to the tables. I really want to love the Bernard's Cafe. It really could be great. The food tends to always be between acceptable and good. It shows that they have multiple chefs with little to no recipes for them to work from. I have ordered the same wrap a few times now and most recently found bacon on it, another time hot peppers. The soup is hit and miss too, the gazpacho was so bad I ask them to take it away after a few bites, but the chicken tortilla is good. Eggs Benedict was cooked perfectly but had very little holendaise sauce and there English muffin was very hard (needed a steak knife to cut it). Like I said I really want to love this place. It has great potential and will keep me as a customer, but it could be so much better. The copper kettle is not far from here and I find it to be more consistent but with smaller portions (when getting a wrap). read more

My kids love cafe breakfast places and this is one that stacks up well to many we have visited. My sister had her rehearsal dinner here. The place was small but friendly. They didn't have the right amount of seats requested so were waiting for a bit. That was annoying. The food? Well I got the portabella mushroom salad and it was good. But it seems like I was the only one that liked my food. My husband's chicken parm was bland and tasteless. My moms rice pilaf was undercooked. Yes, you read that right. I guess their breakfast is good but maybe our large party threw them off that night? Not sure but food was just good I guess. Tried this place out for breakfast on a Sunday, a little later in the day, after 11. My western omelette was fantastic, perfectly cooked. Home fries were good too. Ate late breakfast today and 3 omlettes took 45 minutes. Waitress completely unengaged with how long our food was taking. Once the food came the quality was very good, however 45 minutes is far too long. Yes, it was Mother's Day but we were seated at the end of their rush and the restaurant was 1/2 empty 10 minutes after we ordered our food. Place is fairly decent. Nice alternative to a diner. What bothers me though is that if you order deliver they hit you with a ton of surcharges. I had a delivery charge, packaging charge, and an online order charge. It totaled an additional $5-$7. Then I had to tip the kid. I would go there for eating in, but the delivery costs are inconsistent with standard delivery practices and completely arbitrary. read more

Rude and slow service. It took us 30 min to get eggs, pancakes and oatmeal at 8:30am and there was only one other table that came in after us.Then when they brought my Dad his oatmeal he realized it was made with milk, he's lactose intolerant, when this was explained to the server she said you should've asked first like other people because they don't make oatmeal with water. It then took another 15 min to get him eggs and toast at which point everyone else was finished with their food. RUDE service. I won't be back. I stopped in for a quick cup of coffee on a frigid morning with my son. I told the hostess I wasn't eating, just having coffee, and asked if it was ok. She seated me and when the waitress came she was clearly disgusted that I wasn't ordering. I intended to stay a short time to get out of the cold and intended to leave a good tip. The place was mostly empty so I wasnt taking up a table they needed. I mentioned to her that I had told the hostess I wasn't ordering food, just coffee. She walked away in a huff and said "Then why'd you come HERE". I paid (with tip) and left immediately. I won't make the same mistake again. read more

Great neighborhood cafe, with a solid menu and fair prices. We mostly come here for breakfast--decent pancakes (surprisingly a challenge for many restaurants), few interesting vegetarian options, and hot coffee that keeps coming. Spouse is a meat eater and loves the Jersey Jammer, which is Taylor Ham, egg and cheese with a fried hash brown patty on a roll. Kids love the French toast and pancakes equally so we get an order of each and share them. Service is friendly, too! read more

We visited Bernards Cafe for the first time and were so impressed. The menu was extensive and had a great variety of food. I ordered crab cakes which came with wild rice and vegetables. As I do not eat rice, I requested vegetables instead. They had no problem substituting and brought me sautéed spinach and grilled asparagus which was fabulous!! Everyone in my family loved their entrees. The portions are on the larger side. Everyone, except me, brought home leftovers. The service is outstanding. I am a long time customer and place quite a few lunch deliveries with people in my office. Today will be the last. I ordered a wrap -- with the delivery charge and the tip it came to $13 - FOR A WRAP! I was told 40 minutes, it came after 1.5 hours -- soggy , cold and with the wrong side. As this has not been even close to the first issue I have had with them (one time they brought my delivery to the wrong address and left it there - not realizing after I called). This time-- I called to ask for some sort of credit, or a partial refund.. their response was they would bring me my money back but take the wrap back. I just don't have two hours of my work day to waste on lunch , nor do I have patience for disgraceful customer service. So they've lost my business for good... read more

Well, it seems that depending on the server you get, what your experience is. Today I had Miriam. One of the most expressionless, cold, servers I have ever worked with. No hello, just "what do you want?". When she brought me my sandwich, she brought it on a square plate with the corner broken off. When I was finished she came back said "all done?" and picked up my plate and walked away. She then returned with the check, without even asking me if I wanted dessert, which I did, and walked away. I just paid the check and left. I'm a new business operator in the area, and this does not bode well for me giving recommendations to any of my customers. Walked in around mid day Sunday and it was understandably busy. We were told it would be a ten minute wait for our table of 5+ a high chair. This seemed perfectly reasonable. After only 5 or so minutes a busboy took us to a table for four and pulled a chair and high chair to the end which was clearly in the walking path. We hesitantly were sitting down when a waitress walked up, threw her arms in the air, and very loudly said, "Are you kidding me?" She then walked off presumably to confront the busboy for how we were seated. She came back and said, "Just so you know it's a long wait for food this morning." That was the entirety of her greeting to us. Somebody I was with said calmly, "are you trying to discourage us from eating here?" She retorted with attitude, "No, but those people (pointing over her shoulder at a couple watching with seeming disgust) have been waiting like 45 minutes, so . . ." Waiting for a table that could comfortably sit us without putting us in everybody elses way would have been much preferable, but that wouldn't have mattered given the complete lack of self awareness and professionalism exhibited by our would be server. We quietly and quickly left the diner not wanting to be any more of a disturbance than we had already been made to be by the staff. No tact, no class, and no concern. Will not be back. read more

This place used to be good back around 5-7 years ago. Went here a few times visiting the east coast back for holiday's and it really sucks. The server was nasty, they messed up our orders, and it wasn't cheap. This is sad because it used to be fairly decent - maybe it needs new management. read more
